Death Battle Predictions: Leon S. Kennedy VS Frank West

Call those things whatever you want: the living dead, ankle biters, ghouls, Walkers, infected, or just “them” - the first sight of a zombie means that the end of the world is near and all hell is about to break loose. With society ready to crumble in the blink of an eye, the time must come where the wheat is separated from the chaff; there are those who fall victim to the plague or otherwise meet their ends due to ignorance, there are others who manage to survive by the skin of their teeth, and then there’s the top 1% of the crop who rise up to the challenge and make rescuing survivors and destroying these undead nightmares a goddamn art form.

Leon S. Kennedy, Resident Evil’s battle-tested B.O.W. specialist. Frank West, Dead Rising’s intrepid freelance photojournalist. Don’t let appearances deceive you; while they may look like ordinary people on the outside, their instincts and massive arsenals have served them well in battling hordes of the damned and the corrupt corporations which hope to harness them for their own ends. With the Death Battle stage primed and filled with grotesque abominations looking for their next meal, which one of these two zombie-killing Capcom all-stars prove that they are the absolute best at what they do and live to fight another day?

Before we begin, we would like to thank Celldweller. No, he isn’t secretly sponsoring our blog. We just really like his music. Also, while they haven’t contributed verdicts this time, we’d like to thank MeyJaX, Meddadius and Psychic Savior for still helping out with research and stuff.

Background

Leon S. Kennedy

On September 21, 1998, the industrial Midwestern town of Raccoon City was submerged in mass hysteria. Zombies and other terrifying creatures littered the streets as various isolated incidents through the town led to the spread of the t-Virus, a biological agent created by the Umbrella Corporation. For the past several decades, this multi-million dollar conglomerate dabbled in ethically questionable practices to create Bio-Organic Weapons (B.O.W.s), which its founders believed would be the next step of human evolution.

In the midst of all the chaos emerged a confused and probably drunk 21-year old police academy graduate named Leon Scott Kennedy, who eagerly requested a position in Raccoon City to investigate a series of murders in the nearby Arklay Mountains. Having spent the previous day with too much to drink over a bad break-up, Leon turned up late to his first day on the job and stumbled upon the destroyed Raccoon City, where he met a survivor named Claire Redfield. Together, the two began investigating the truth behind the outbreak, eventually realizing Umbrella’s complicity in the whole thing and managed to escape with the aid of the mysterious Ada Wong before the city was decimated in a nuclear attack.

As he now possessed the skills needed to combat similar threats with the rise of B.O.W.s, the United States Strategic Command recruited Leon to prevent more outbreaks and eliminate the organizations who seek to use these new weapons in their schemes. Since then, Leon played an integral role in several high-profile operations in later assignments, such as rescuing the President's daughter Ashley Graham from the Los Illuminados cult in Spain, apprehending arms deal Javier Hidalgo and stopping the reformed Umbrella’s terror strike in China. He also became one of the founding members of the Division of Security Operations, a counter-terrorist unit under the federal government tasked with neutralizing bioterror threats to the country.

Frank West

In 2006, the Willamette Parkview Mall - a shopping complex which serves the aforementioned small Colorado town - was sealed off by the National Guard for reasons unknown. Finding an opportunity to make a name for himself, photojournalist Frank West snuck into the mall to see if the quarantine had any cases for him to break to the public. To his surprise, he found that it was the site of an unknown viral outbreak which transformed nearly all of the town’s residents and more into zombies. With his ride out not returning for another three days, Frank was pressured to find the truth behind the outbreak quickly to ensure his escape and the release of any information he gathered to the general public.

While trapped inside the mall, Frank juggled multiple tasks; not only did he work with Homeland Security agents to discover the truth, but he began rescuing abandoned survivors and occasionally needing to defend them against others who went psychopathic due to the outbreak. Soon, he pinpointed the attack on siblings Carlito and Isabella Keyes, whose hometown in Central America was also destroyed in a similar attack, caused by an American research facility which bred wasps that zombify their hosts. Frank later teamed up with a remorseful Isabella to prevent a larger outbreak, and escaped after fending off Special Forces assigned to cover up the Willamette Incident.

Armed with proof, Frank exposed the truth behind Willamette to the rest of the world, becoming a minor celebrity and a respected authority on zombie killing. While appreciative of the glory he gained and wanted, his duties as a photojournalist brought him back into the fold multiple times to continue exposing the truths behind corporations who profit from these viral attacks. When not uncovering the latest zombie craze, he can be found teaching photojournalism classes in a local college to make ends meet and inspire similar thinking in his students.

Abilities

Leon

Spec Ops Training

Leon was initially nothing more with a rookie cop, lacking any experience on the field - much less in dealing with a zombie outbreak. His time served in Raccoon City at the very least displayed flashes of his future expertise in battling B.O.W.s, capable of fighting off monsters like Hunters, Lickers and Tyrants despite being a relative newcomer to actual combat. That all changed when Leon was recruited by USSTRATCOM, and from that point onwards, he spent the rest of his adult life developing the skills needed to make him one of the best to fend off attacks from similar mutant monstrosities. His skills pertaining to marksmanship, unarmed close-quarters combat and knife fighting all served him well on the field thus far.

In terms of weapons handling, Leon is accustomed to the use of any firearm he can get his hands on. Resident Evil: Vendetta in particular shows that he has adopted the use of the Center Axis Relock (C.A.R.) system, a form of gun combat which allows the use of lightweight weapons like handguns in a close-quarters battle scenario, combining the use of grapples and quick strikes with close-range shots to vital areas in order to quickly suppress groups of hostiles. Leon’s gunplay also extends to long-range gunfights, even in high-pressure situations. He can hit distant targets with nothing but a pistol or a throwing knife, and can easily wield heavy weapons like rocket launchers and turret emplacements to take on larger threats normal weapons may be ineffective against.

In hand-to-hand combat, Leon’s training has shown that he is capable of trumping those with relatively little CQC training and disarming them of their weapons. At best, he can match the likes of other well-trained combatants such as Chris Redfield, Ada Wong and Svetlana Belikova, and even apply those maneuvers to infected enemies; he can perform roundhouse kicks and suplexes powerful enough to destroy hostiles’ heads or otherwise send them flying a good distance and restrain Lickers in rest holds. With a knife, Leon can wield it ambidextrously with little to no effort, capable of beating ex-comrade Jack Krauser in a knife fight.

Leon’s preview also identifies his overall fighting style as Systema, a Russian martial art utilized by high-tier KGB and Spetsnaz counter terrorist operatives. While it has no specific attacks or techniques as a normal martial art would, Systema’s well-rounded self-defense orientation requires users to be aware of their surroundings, making the most out of the environment to maximize movement options and being well-versed in striking, grappling and weapons-based combat.

While it is accurate to say that Leon has achieved peak physical prowess given his training and missions, his feats indicate near-superhuman levels of performance. He can parkour around environments in mere seconds, take hits from massive B.O.W.s with no debilitating injuries, evade attacks and environmental hazards easily and use his knowledge and experience in fighting monsters to take down any threat he encounters, making him one of the deadliest individuals in the Resident Evil universe.

Frank

Survival Techniques

Despite not having any known form of formal combat training and being nothing more than a literal “average Joe” at first sight, Frank’s uncanny ability to persevere in extreme conditions have made him arguably the most qualified zombie slayer in the Dead Rising universe, having successfully exposed the first major outbreak in American history by surviving for three days inside a mall filled to the brink with the undead.

While time spent covering wars has taught him how to use guns, Frank’s main fighting style revolves around using anything and everything around him as weapons. Ordinary items like baseball bats, kitchen utensils, brooms, plates, park benches all become tools which he uses to cave zombie skulls in like no tomorrow, and he has no qualms using the same tactics against other humans, whether they may be other desperate survivors, insane Psychopaths or corrupt Special Forces operatives. Frank’s ingenuity and resourcefulness shine the most by crafting Combo Weapons with certain items. With nothing more than what appears to be duct tape and an innovative mind, he can repurpose those same mundane items into even more deadly tools to increase his effectiveness as a combatant.

Even without weapons, Frank is naturally tough, and can use his large frame to toss around opponents like ragdolls, perform devastating wrestling maneuvers powerful enough to destroy zombie skulls, and straight up disembowel anyone who gets in his way. He proved his fighting prowess by defeating Brock Mason (a highly trained special forces leader) in unarmed combat. Having to sneak around zombies and special forces troops, he’s become adept at stealth to take them by surprise and deal with them quickly. If he is caught, Frank can adapt thanks to ability to escape from holds and grapples (be them from zombies or soldiers) and his ability to remove and escape from restraints such as handcuffs.

Exo Zombie

At the end of Dead Rising 4, Frank is left near-dead and devoured by zombies after a sacrifice play to ensure the truth behind the second Willamette outbreak is released to the public. However, exposure to a special parasite had saved him from death, leaving him as a zombie - one who had not completely succumbed to his natural instincts.

While this form could show up in the actual episode, it should be noted that Frank is cured of his zombie state at the end of Frank Rising, thus causing him to lose these powers. We ourselves are unsure of whether Death Battle will consider Zombie Frank in the fight, but the information is here regardless to cover the possibility.

Enhanced Leaping: Frank now possesses the ability to leap great distances, capable of leaping up to 10 or so meters at a time. During these leaps, he is able to leap onto people knocking them to the ground and leaving them at his mercy.
Increased dashing and launching speed: With reanimating as an Evo, he has gained the ability to leap forward with quite impressive speed and distances. Frank is able to launch himself forward onto people at speeds that render the person helpless and after which that person is subject to getting devoured by him.

Enhanced howl: An ability that Frank gained that is not common in most Evos is the ability to let out a piercing and booming roar that is strong enough that it can disorientate any humans in the nearby vicinity, as well as knock over any zombies in the vicinity, allowing him to be able to knock crowds of zombies all at once.

Acid spit: Like most evos, Frank is able to let out a wave acid from his mouth which will burn anything or anyone that it comes in contact with. This is useful to give slow agonizing pain or can be used to incapacitate people for Frank to feed on.

Immunity to pain: As with many of the zombies, Frank has shown to have no signs of pain when hurt, something like getting shot multiple times would normally kill a man, however, as a zombie, Frank is shown shrugging this off and being able to move around as normal.

Equipment

Leon

Survival Knife

Leon’s trusty knife that he usually carries with him in case he needs to get up-close and personal. While he has no issue using it to cut zombies open, he shows his expertise in wielding it in a straight knife fight during his encounter with Krauser. With the right timing, he can use it to knock incoming throwing weapons away before they hit him.

Handguns

Small and compact firearms which can be wielded with one hand. These are the closest Leon has to a default weapon, as he starts out every game and movie he’s ever been in with one, and always has them taken out in a cutscene despite having much more powerful and effective weapons at his disposal.
  • Heckler & Koch VP70M: Wielded by Leon in 2. Has an 18-shot magazine. Can be upgraded with Handgun Parts to form the VP70M Burst “Matilda”. Appears in 4 as the Matilda and in 6 as the “Wing Shooters”, which Leon can dual wield.
  • “Silver Ghost”: Used in 4 and Degeneration. Custom-made by gunsmith Joe Kendo. Upgrades increase the chance to destroy a target’s head with a critical shot. Magazine can carry up to 25 rounds. Can also be equipped with a silencer.
  • Springfield Armory XD “Blacktail”: Used by Leon in 4’s Mercenaries Mode. Boasts superior handling and a well-rounded stat spread. Carries 35 shots in a magazine.
  • FN Five-seveN “Punisher”: Can be acquired from the Merchant in 4. It can shoot through multiple targets, including shields and armor. Magazine carries up to 28 shots.
  • Mauser C96 “Red 9”: A German-made pistol which can be bought from the Merchant, who describes it as the choice of an avid gun collector. The detachable stock can help stabilize aiming. Powerful, has a high rate of fire, and has a 22-round clip.
  • Springfield Armory TRP Operator: Leon’s sidearm in Damnation.
  • SIG-Sauer P226 E2 "Sentinel Nine": Leon’s primary weapon in Vendetta. He extensively uses the Center Axis Relock system when fighting with this gun.

Machine Guns

Designation for the fully-automatic weapons Leon acquires, which include submachine guns and assault rifles.
  • Ingram MAC-11: Found in the Raccoon Police Department armory. Has a large ammo capacity and full-auto firing.
  • Steyr TMP: Owned by the Merchant. Can be outfitted by a stock to shoulder the weapon while firing, absorbing 80% of the recoil. When fully-upgraded, it can carry up to 250 rounds in a magazine.
  • AKMSU: Carbine variant of the AKM assault rifle. Leon uses a customized version as his long arm weapon in Damnation.
  • AEK-971: Found buried inside a coffin in the crypts under the Tall Oaks Cathedral. Favors stopping power over rate-of-fire. Has a bayonet attached under the barrel which can be used as a melee weapon.

Shotguns

Firearms in this group are effective at close ranges thanks to their wide spread of pellets and devastating stopping power, making them ideal for facing off against groups of enemies and tougher opponents.
  • Remington M1100-p: Pump-action shotgun with a cut barrel; has a five-round capacity. Used by Leon in 2. Powerful enough to split a zombie in half. Custom parts can restore the full-length barrel, providing an increase to recoil, shot spread, ammo capacity and stopping power - point-blank shots can destroy zombie torsos.
  • Franchi SPAS-12: Pump-action; has a slow-rate of fire but has excellent stopping power.
  • Remington 870: 12-gauge pump-action shotgun. Tuning from the Merchant can increase its power over long ranges. Carries up to 18 shots.
  • Benelli M3 Super 90: Pump-action. Has a tighter spread of pellets. Carries up to 17 shots.
  • Armsel Protecta “Striker”: Semi-automatic shotgun with a revolver-style drum magazine that can carry up to 100 rounds with full upgrades. Has a stock in the front to steady aiming.
  • Ithaca 37 “Stakeout”: Pump-action. Has a red-dot sight attached. Can store 8 rounds.

Sniper Rifles

While usually having slow firing rates and are not ideal at close ranges, sniper rifles excel in shooting enemies from long distances, and usually have scopes that allow the user to aim at specific vital areas.
  • Springfield M1930A4: Bolt-action sniper rifle which boasts greater stopping power than its modern counterparts at the expense of firing and reloading speeds. A custom scope can be attached to increase zoom distance. Can also support a thermal-imaging scope to trace heat signatures. Has a storage of 18 rounds when fully upgraded.
  • Heckler & Koch SL8: A semi-auto sniper rifle with a decent rate-of-fire. Can also use the same scopes as the former weapon. Max magazine count is 24 rounds.
  • Mk.14 Mod 0: Acquired in 6. While lacking in firepower, it has quick firing and reloading speeds and can take out enemies from mid-range. Can carry 5 shots in each clip.
  • SIG-Sauer SSG 3000: Bolt-action sniper rifle which Leon can use in 4’s Mercenaries mode.

Magnums

While ammunition for these weapons are rare, their stopping power and accuracy are unmatched, making them ideal for boss encounters.
  • IMI Desert Eagle Mark XIX “Lightning Hawk”: Used in 2, 6 and Vendetta. Main heavy weapon of choice used by the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance. Holds 8 powerful rounds.
  • “Broken Butterfly”: A revolver-type magnum found in Salazar’s Castle. Upgrades with the Merchant can boost its ammo capacity to 12 and allow it to exceed its already devastating power.
  • Colt M1911 “Killer7”: Modified pistol-type magnum. While less powerful than the Broken Butterfly, it can shoot and reload faster.

Explosives

Weapons in this category have more limited ammo, but they create large area-of-effect explosions which put them among the most powerful firearms Leon can wield.
  • RPG-7: Standard issue rocket launcher, mainly used by every Resident Evil protagonist to kill their games’ final bosses. Shots are usually enough to kill large enemies in a single hit. A specialized red-colored variant was used by Leon to defeat Osmund Saddler.
  • Mine Thrower: Fires mines shaped as darts that can stick to any person or surface. Upgrades allow its darts to home in on heat signatures and attach themselves more readily to hostiles.
  • Frag Grenades: Creates an explosion, good for clearing groups of enemies.
  • Incendiary Grenades: Grenades which contain substances like thermite or white phosphorus that cause flames to spread upon explosion.
  • Flash Grenades: Grenades which stun and disorient those in a nearby range.
  • C4: Remote-controlled bomb which can be planted as a trap.

Special Weapons

Weapons in this category are post-game rewards which Leon can use in New Game Plus runs. Given the absurdity of such weapons, it’s unlikely that they’ll actually show up in the episode, but we’ll leave them here for the sake of completion.
  • Infinite Rocket Launcher: An RPG-7 with infinite ammo.
  • Smith & Wesson Model 500 “Handcannon”: The most powerful magnum Leon wields in the series, which can also have infinite ammo through Merchant upgrades.
  • P.R.L. 412: A directed energy weapon which fires a flash of light that can blind and stun enemies. With ample charging, it fires a beam (possibly composed of UV light) that destroys Las Plagas parasites while supposedly leaving the human host intact. Due to its unique nature, it is not effective against those who are not infected with the Plagas.
  • M1A1 Thompson “Chicago Typewriter”: A submachine gun best known for its use by 1930s criminals and the US Army during World War II. The one used by Leon in 4 has infinite ammo and never needs to be reloaded.

Body Armor

A set of kevlar armor which reduces the amount of damage Leon takes by 30%.

First Aid Spray

For most missions, Leon may need medical attention out on the field for injuries sustained in combat, and these cans have enough healing potential to heal almost any wound he takes in mere seconds, restoring him to peak physical condition. Leon can also scavenge herbs to recreate similar sprays, or other healing items with lesser efficiency.

Frank

Normal Weapons

Frank has used many, many different weapons in the Dead Rising series. These are not all the weapons he has used, just some of the most significant ones.

Note: most of these weapons/items aren't available on hand and need to be found/located and Frank can only hold up to 12 items at a time (excluding his camera).

As of Dead Rising 4, Frank has four item slot categories: Health (Food/items that restore health), Melee (Items used for melee combat such as bats or knives), Thrown (Items that need to be thrown like grenades or baseballs) and Firearms (Guns) which have a total of 7 each when fully upgraded (Bringing the total amount of items he can use up to 28)
  • Camera: Frank being a photographer always carries a camera with him. It has a bright flash that can make enemies flinch or momentarily blinded. It was later upgraded so that it it has night vision and thermal vision so Frank can look through it to see enemies in the dark. He can also execute a execute a "Snapshot", in which Frank grabs an enemy/zombie and takes a selfie with them
  • Baseball Bat: Frank’s main melee weapon is a wooden baseball. Frank mostly uses it as a bludgeon weapon. It can also be combined with nails to create a spiked bat.
  • Real Mega Buster: Based on the Mega Man Franchise, it is mounted on Frank’s Arms and it fires energy projectiles that can blow enemies to bits. It can fire 300 times before breaking down.
  • Queen: A genetically-modified queen wasp that is responsible for the zombie outbreak. It can cause any human to become zombified. Jars of Queens can also be used as stun grenades after been thrown/shattered
  • Impact Hammer: One of Frank’s most powerful weapons in his arsenal. It creates a huge shockwave when Frank smashes it on the ground. Its shockwave is capable of killing a small group of zombies that are around Frank. It can also blow individual zombies to bits.
  • Chainsaw: Frank has used a chainsaw in battle numerous times. It is a two-handed weapon that can be used to chop an enemy zombie in half.
  • Small Chainsaw: This is a one-handed variant to the chainsaw.
  • Molotov Cocktail: Frank throws this to create a fiery explosion, setting zombies ablaze
  • Sledge Hammer: Frank uses this to bash zombies heads in
  • Servbot Helmet: Based off a "Servbot" from the Megaman franchise, it can be placed over an opponent's head to disorient/blind them. Frank also can also wear it on his forehead to give himself protection and to improve his headbutting attacks. Wearing it doesn’t seem to hinder his vision like it does for others, as he can get around just fine with it on.
  • Small Mixer: A small portable cordless blender that Frank West can use to make juices anytime anywhere he wants without use of a blender, provided he can find the ingredients first (Note: Small Mixer DOES NOT take up inventory space)
  • Fire Extinguisher: A standard fire extinguisher that not only puts out fires, but can spray and cool down zombies until they freeze up and stay that way for 30 seconds so they can be shattered. If it doesn’t freeze enemies, it can certainly make them erupt into a coughing fit or be used as a harsh bludgeoning weapon once it runs out.
  • Explosives: Frank can make use of explosives such as hand grenades, rocket fireworks, and sticks of dynamite. He can combine them with other objects to make combo weapons such as “Dynameat”, “Blambow” and “Hail Mary”. He can also throw a propane tank at a group of zombies and shoot it to make it blow up from a distance.
  • Swords: Frank has used swords in combat, throughout the Dead Rising franchise he has used broad swords, katanas and ritualistic swords. He can also use a laser sword.
  • Cleaning Equipment: Believe it or not, Frank has used cleaning equipment in battle such as push brooms, vacuum cleaners, and floor buffers
  • Construction Tools: Frank has used equipment that is mostly used for construction such as hammers, saws, and wrenches
  • Knives: Frank has occasionally used knives such as combat knives and kitchen knives.
  • Historic Weapons: Frank’s not afraid to get his inner historian on and has used bows and arrows, battle axes, lances and spears.
  • Power Tools: Frank has used drills and combined various weapons with them to make special weapons, like a bucket of death or a drill spear
  • Sports Equipment: Soccer balls, grenades taped to footballs, the aforementioned baseball bat, along with a metallic baseball bat that comes with 20 balls and can be used as a ranged attack, same with the golf club and hockey puck, with both come with their own “ammo”. The golf club and hockey stick can both shoot their ammo from behind cover as well. Man sports are great for bludgeoning people, aren’t they?
  • Gardening/Farming Tools: Frank has used equipment that is used for farming such as shovels, hoes, rakes, hedge clippers, pitch forks, sickles.
  • Kitchenware: Frank has used things that are usually kept in the kitchen such as chef knives, butcher knives, and meat cleavers as well as pots, pans, silverware, plates, and kitchen knives.
  • Furniture: Frank has used Furniture in combat such as tables, chairs, benches, stools, potted plants, lamps, and shelves/racks.
  • Weapon Cart: A shop items with sharp items protruding from it that could be pushed from behind to ram into enemies to stab/skewer them.
  • Exercise Equipment: Things normally found at the gym such as dumbells, barbells, boxing gloves, and MMA gloves.
  • Toys: Children’s play things stuffed animals, water guns, foam dart guns, skate boards, inflatable hammers, plastic swords, remote controlled helicopters, and stick horses can be picked up as weapons against the undead. While most of them seem useless, bags of marbles can be used to trip people, forcing a mask on someone’s head can blind them, and some of these toys can be used to make some deadly combo weapons.
  • Hunting Weapons: Can make use of not just hunting firearms, but also things such as spears, boomerangs, and bow and arrow sets (which can also be combined for combo weapons), crossbows, ect
  • Food: Frank West will throw pies into the faces of his foes, toss some cans of soda or beans at them hard enough to knock them down, spray some ketchup and mustard all over them, or just have a food fight and throw whatever food or drink he can. Of course, he’s better off eating most of it for health or using it to make mixed juices. He can also spray cooking oil on the floor to trip up zombies.
  • Home electronics: Frank can make use of televisions, lamps, flash lights, and computers as bludgeoning weapons or as as pieces for his combo weapons.
  • Music instruments: Frank can use various guitars weapons, as well as other pieces of music gear such as mic stands or CD’s.
  • Store Items: Being that Frank first fought zombies in a shopping mall, he’s used to using things commonly found in stores such as display racks, shelves, large novelty store props, cash registers, steel racks, and mannequins

Firearms

“Covering wars” isn’t just the most meme-able thing to come out of Frank’s mouth; it’s also the basis behind his ability to handle almost any firearm he can get his hands on. Although guns mainly take a backseat to many of his improvised and unconventional weapons, he is at least familiar enough to pick one up and take enemies down from a distance.

  • Blacktail: Frank’s initial hand gun at the start of the game. Holds 15 bullets.
  • Handgun: Second firearm Frank gets in the game. Doesn't have much stopping power, and it has 30 shots. Often found on zombie police officers (So it’s likely Colt M1911) Can instantly kill any zombie with a head shot.
  • Silver Ghost: Another handgun that holds 15 bullets. Slightly weaker fire power than the Blacktail
  • Red9: Also called a Mauser C96 or a ‘Broom Handle’. Better firepower than the blacktail with excellent fire and reloading speed. Holds up to 9 bullets.
  • .50 Caliber Pistol: A high powered handgun and possibly the strongest of all his hand guns. Holds 10 to 15 bullets.
  • Shotgun: Modeled after a Remington Model 870 police with a magazine extension tube. The shot leaves the barrel in a cone shape, hitting multiple targets in a single blast, though is weaker shooting enemies from afar. Can be fired about 20 times before needing to be discarded.
  • Semi-Auto Shotgun: A shot gun that fires at a faster rate. Has a magazine size of 12.
  • Riot Gun: A Benelli M4 Super 90. More powerful than the shotgun and Semi-Auto Shotgun. Has a magazine Size of 7 with a faster firing speed.
  • Sniper Rifle: Ideal for shooting long distances. Has about 30 shots in it (has a magazine size of 8 in “Chop till you drop”)
  • Semi-Auto Rifle: A faster more efficient rifle with faster firing speed, faster reload speed, and a magazine that holds 10 bullets.
  • Magnum: Also known as a "Broken Butterfly" and based on a Schofield M3. It is one of Frank’s strongest guns. Able to hold 6 bullets; ammo for it (and other magnums) is very scarce.
  • Killer7: Modeled after an AMT Hardballer. Just as strong as a Magnum, only instead it holds 7 bullets and has a much faster reload speed.
  • Machine Gun: A modified M4A1. A fully automatic rifle capable of firing 150 shots before running out. Is one of Frank's best firearms and better weapons over all.
  • Submachine gun: Resembles a Micro Uzi. While it has only a medium amount of power,it kills easily at a very fast rate. Has a magazine of 100 shots.
  • Light Machine Gun: An American variant of the Belgian FN Minimi (namely the M249 PARA) Can fire up to 200 rounds before running out of ammunition. With its power, fire rate, and ammo count, it is capable of clearing large crowds of zombies with ease.
  • Chicago Typewriter: Also called a 'Tommy gun'. Franks most powerful sub-machine gun with a magazine size of 100.
  • Stun Gun: A small self defense weapon that looks to be based on a taser gun. It’s a useful weapon since even psychopaths hit by it will remain stationary after the first jolt. Starts off with a 100% charge before gradually decreasing with use.
  • Blasts Frequency Gun: Shoots a blast of high-frequency sound waves that explode the heads of gas zombies with a plasma discharge surrounds by an electrical current to make a gas zombie's head explode. However, it barely does damage to humans or even regular zombies. If used on a human however, it can induce spontaneous vomiting, which can make the target drop their weapons and leave them open. Can be combined with a "Laser Sword" to create a "Laser Gun"
  • Syringe Gun: A weapon used in "Case West" which fires syringes. Can be used 20 times before being discarded, though they do little to no damage
  • Heavy Machine Gun: An M2 Browning machine gun that's often mounted on the back of a military Humvee (stolen by escaped convicts). Contains 200 rounds and it one of the strongest weapons that Frank can get his hands on, though carrying it around does slow him down.
  • RPG: A rocket propelled grenade launcher (used in Dead Rising 4) that can blow up cars and small crowds of zombies. Can fire five times before being discarded.

Vehicles

Regular Vehicles

  • Convertible: A red convertible car. Is the fastest, but has the lowest durability of all of them.
  • White Sedan: Is one of his more balanced cars; has reasonable speed and durability.
  • Delivery Truck: A large white trunk. It is the slowest of all Frank's regular vehicles, but it also has the highest durability.
  • Jeep: Originally used by the convicts in Dead Rising 1 (which can be hijacked by Frank if he kills all of them) A green jeep that has a mounted heavy machine gun attached to it (Which Frank can detach and carry around himself)
  • Motorcycle: A motorcycle that while fast, has the lowest durability of any of Frank’s vehicles.
  • Dirt Bike: A motorbike used for sporting events. Very fast, but not very durable. It can also be used to create various combo bikes.

Combo Bikes

Frank West is capable of modifying dirt bikes/motorcycles. All of them explode when they break down, so he needs to make sure he can get off of them before they do.
  • Bazooka Bike: A dirt bike combined with a “Rocket Launcher” Combo weapon (Which is a series of lead pipes combined with rocket fireworks). Can fire up to 150 rockets before running out of ammo.
  • Machine Gun Bike:A Dirt Bike with two light machine guns attached to the sides. Can shoot 200 rounds before running out of ammunition
  • Rabbit Bike:A dirt bike with stuffed large stuffed animals attached to it. The soft padding can actually bound away enemies who touch it/get too close while also protecting it from taking too much damage while crashing.
  • Slicycle:A dirt bike combined with chainsaws on the sides. It is stronger, more durable, and lasts much longer than a regular dirt bike. Is also the strongest of the modified bikes. It can drive around slicing through crowds of zombies with ease.
  • Wheelchair Bike: A dirt bike with a wheelchair attached to it made for the purpose of transporting survivors quicker. Though the wheelchair’s extra weight makes the bike slightly slower and harder to control.

Combo Vehicles

Made when Frank combines different kinds of much larger vehicles. While they are slow, they offer a lot of protection and can last a while before breaking down and are made specifically for mowing down/driving through entire crowds of zombies.
  • Bogey Monster: A modified Gold Kart combined with a balancer (A type of high tech segway) that fires out golf balls as projectiles, can deploy propeller blades from underneath that spin around slicing the legs off zombies who get close, and a laser grid that slices near by zombies into cubes.
  • Creep Fryer: A bike with food stand and cooking machines attached to it. Can fire out streams of hot burning grease that immediately sets enemies on fire, as well as flaming cooking grills in front for cooking alive any enemies who jump in front of it. It can also drive in circles pelting enemies with foot items that knock them down.
  • Cryonic Commando: An antique car combined with a snowmobile. A larger bulkier vehicle that shoots large blasts of icy cold air that freeze enemies and encase them in ice. It can also shoot large icy snowballs at zombies to knock them down and freeze the area around it, releasing a blast of cold air so potent it not only freezes, but shatters the zombies around it.
  • Kill-O-Watt: A small modified go kart that can electrocute enemies who touch it, shoots electric pulses to hit shock a group of enemies from a distance, and can send an electric current through the ground to electrocute nearby zombies with such intensity that it makes them go flying back.
  • MowerHawg: A lawn mower combined with a kid’s bike. A red bicycle modified with large lawn mower blades in front that grinds up zombies before it. It also has a built in flame thrower to torch enemies in front of it and can launch flaming molotov cocktails.
  • Sling Rot: A modified tow truck combined with a hearse with a catapult on the back. It can suck up zombies from the front and store them in the back, using them as living projectiles to fling at other zombies. It can also shoot large streams of fire from both sides.
  • Tread Maker: A wheelchair modified with large Tractor wheels on the sides and weapons on top. It can fire explosive missiles from the top, run over zombies with its giant bulky wheels, and go faster with a booster that disperses a fiery blast.
  • Warmonger: A modified ATV combined with a military ORV with a large minigun mounted on top that can turn and shoot a full 360 degrees in a circle. Also has a built in grenade launcher to blow up small groups of enemies as well.

Combo Weapons

Frank is able to combine two weapons together in order to make more powerful weapons in a matter of seconds. They are usually made through duct tape and are much stronger than normal weapons. Frank has made over 50 different combination weapons so we are going to list the ones we feel are the most significant as well as interesting.
  • Paddle Saw: The most common combination weapon in the series. It is created by combining a chainsaw with a Kayak Paddle. It is a slow but powerful weapon with good range and can be used to slice through zombies like butter.
  • Defiler: Created by combining a sledgehammer with an axe, it is slow but does a fair amount of damage when swung.
  • Super Slicer: Created by combining a servbot mask with lawnmower blades. Frank can use this weapon to charge in head first, slicing anything near its blades, though it also makes Frank move very slowly.
  • Equalizer: A baseball bat with tons of blades from knives sticking out of that not only harshly bludgeons, but also stabs and even slices enemies
  • Freedom Bear: The bear that was made with “AMERICA FUCK YEAH” in mind. The Freedom Bear combines a robotic teddy bear with a machine gun to create a turret of doom.
  • Gandelf: Made after combining a lawn elf ornament with a spear weapon. It is a long pole weapon with an elf ornament on the top. It can fire off said ornament (with another immediately taking its place) like a missile, which triggers a confetti-filled explosion upon impact that blows zombies into pieces. When slammed onto the ground, it can summon a small platoon of explosive wind up Christmas elves that walk away a short distance before blowing up all at once.
  • Pegasus: Used after combing a stick pony (yes) and rocket fireworks. It is mostly used as an impaling weapon. Afterwards, the fireworks go off which makes the enemy zombie take flight into the air before exploding.
  • Spiked Bat: One of Frank’s most used common weapon, combining nails with a baseball bat, it can be swung to bring out your inner Negan. With a strong enough strike, the nails can be dug into a zombie’s head.
  • Boomstick: May be named after the Death Battle host himself, the Boomstick combines a shotgun with a pitchfork and can be used to skewer zombies.
  • Electric Crusher: Made after combining a sledge hammer with a car battery. It can be swung to deliver electric damage to an enemy zombie.
  • Air Horn: Made after combining a pylon with a spray paint can. It basically acts like an extremely loud air horn that can be sounded off by a zombie's head, making it explode.
  • Auger: Made after combining a pitchfork with a drill motor. It basically acts like a large drill that spins a pitchfork at 100 RPM to mangle zombies.
  • Beer Hat: Made after combining a beer with construction hat. It’s like those cool/dumb hats with straws you see people wear at football games that Frank can sip from to recover his health little by little. If he drinks it up too fast, he will get sick.
  • Fire/Ice Sword: Frank can give different elements to a sword through the use of gasoline for the fire sword and liquid nitrogen for the ice sword. For the fire sword, Frank adds a gas canister to a large sword so that the blade is always covered in flames. Can not only cut enemies, but also administrate a large blast of smoke and flames between strikes. For the ice sword, it can freeze anything that it touches as well as can freeze a bunch of enemies when Frank does a horizontal slash.
  • Deck the Halls: Made after combing metal gauntlets with Christmas lights. When they hit, they let out a loud soundwave of a bell ringing knocking enemies away. When slammed together, make a loud visible shockwave that sends enemies flying away. It also happens to be a terrible movie.
  • Hail Mary: Made combining a grenade with a football, Frank is able to to score the winning goal by kicking this football into a zombie’s face.
  • Shopping Cart of Doom: Combining an ordinary shopping cart with a bunch of weapons. The Shopping Cart of Doom mows down any zombies in its path and you don’t even have to pay £1 to get it.
  • Impact Blaster: One of his strongest weapons, capable of not only one-shotting zombies, but even psychopaths, combining the Impact Hammer and the Blast Frequency Gun, the force of the hammer combined with the sonic boost and electric power of the Blast Frequency Gun sends the target flying through the air and knock small groups of zombies. It not only deals heavy damage, but also stuns a target for a few seconds. It can also be used to perform a vertical strike to the ground which sends out a massive shockwave to knock back enemies who are close to the blast.
  • Super BFG: Perhaps his most powerful weapon. Also known as the "Mystery Super Weapon". Made when Frank combines a Blast Frequency gun with a sound amplifier. This gun unleashes massive shockwaves that can destroy massive amounts of zombies in one shot.
  • Blambow: A bow that utilizes arrows with sticks of dynamite attached to them for explosive results. Can be used 10 times before being discarded. Another variation includes a crossbow that fires rocket fireworks at enemies with similar fire power.
  • Dynameat: A piece of human flesh combat with a stick of dynamite. Used to distract zombies as they crowd around it wanting to take a bite before it detonates, killing a small group of them.
  • Super Massager: A modified leaf blower that shoots out lubed slippery dil-erm… ‘massagers’ that knock enemies flat on their backs upon impact.
  • Magic Wand: A toy wand combined with any chemicals, this weapon fires literal magic, transforming whatever is caught in its blast into various Christmas things, like gingerbread men or candy canes.
There are far, FAR more combo weapons than this, and these are just an example of not just a larger amount of whacky combo weapons, but also of Frank’s creativity

Exo Suit

Exo Suits are armor that Frank can wear in Dead Rising 4. In normal gameplay, Exo Suits have roughly 2 minutes of energy for Frank to use them before they stop working, but during specific story moments, his suits have no such restriction, so for the purposes of this blog, we’re treating the Exosuit as something that Frank can use indefinitely.

It’s strong enough to punch giant military vehicles out of the way with ease, He can also combine with things around the environment to give it elemental attacks, such as ice cream machines (With a icicle turret on the back), vacuums (for blasting tons of air), becoming Zero from Megaman X, arcade machines (for electric attacks), or lots of guns/military weapons.

Juice

Frank can create, drink different kinds of juices which gives different kinds of effects. While he does often need to find a blender, he does have a small mixer to make juices wherever and whenever he wants (provided he can find ingredients)
  • Mixed Juice: Combinations of ingredients that give Frank an assortment of powers and abilities. All also come with a 50% heal. The variants are as below.
  • Energizer: Ten seconds of invincibility. (Green)
  • Untouchable: Makes Frank unable to be grabbed, but still able to be hit and shot normally. (Red)
  • Nectar: Attracts zombies carrying Queen Bees, which in his universe kills zombies in a large radius when killed. (Yellow)
  • Quick Step: Triples speed for a minute, though this speed increase doesn’t apply to combat. (White)
  • Randomizer: Has a chance of activating a random effect from other juices, but has more of a chance of making Frank vomit three times. (Grey)
  • Spitfire: Allows Frank to use his spit as a projectile flame weapon. (Blue) (In Chop Till You Drop, drinking two Blue Juices in a row has a chance to make him don a Megaman costume and an unlimited real Mega Buster for 2 minutes)
  • Zombait: Zombies become more aggressive to Frank for a short time. (Pink)
  • Repulse: Zombies ignore Frank when drank. Looks identical to Zombait, which is bad when both have opposite effects. (Pink)
  • White Juice: Fully heals Frank and increases maximum health. (White) (Exclusive to Chop till you Drop)

Unarmed Moves and Upgrades

Leon

Melee Attacks

Leon often performs these moves as finishers when his enemies are stunned, distracted, weakened, or on the ground. Most of them can smash open the heads of his enemies, knock them back, or leave them stumbling for a follow up.
  • Roundhouse Kick: Leon gives a swift roundhouse kick to a stunned enemy that sends them back, as well as any within the attack radius. This is most commonly performed on an enemy that has been stunned by a headshot.
  • Back Kick: Leon will deliver a Back Kick to a stunned enemy that will knock them onto their back, also knock enemies behind to stumble.
  • Suplex: Leon grabs an enemy and falls backwards, causing the enemies head to hit the ground and be crushed under the enemies bodyweight.
  • Reverse Roundhouse Kick: Leon jumps up and performs a powerful Reverse Roundhouse Kick to knock an enemy further away from him. (It is also the only melee attack that does not require the enemy to be stunned with a gunshot or be allowed to Grapple Leon. The enemy only needs to come within a certain range.)
  • Jump Kick (Grapple Breaker): Leon will jump and kick an enemy in the face. This is done on an enemy that is grappling Leon from the Front.
  • Elbow (Grapple Breaker): Leon will swing his elbow into the face of an enemy. This is done to an enemy that is grappling Leon From behind.
  • Left Kick: Leon performs a straight kick directly into the enemy's face.
  • Left Kick to Right Kick: Leon attacks the enemy with his Left Kick followed by a second kick, thus leaving him vulnerable for a finishing attack
  • Tackle: Leon sprints into an enemy and performs a shoulder tackle, hitting him in the torso and leaving the enemy vulnerable for a finishing attack.
  • Reverse Roundhouse Kick (Light stun): A common attack, Leon gives a swift roundhouse kick to a stunned enemy that sends them back, as well as any within the attack radius. This is most commonly performed on a lightly stunned enemy from any direction.
  • Armlock Throw (Front heavy stun): Leon grabs the enemy's arm and pushes him while he ducks, throwing the enemy to the ground. This is most commonly performed on a heavily stunned enemy from the front.
  • Bulldog (Back heavy stun): From behind an enemy, Leon jumps at the enemy's back and falls, using his body weight to smash the enemy's face to the ground. This is most commonly performed on a heavily stunned enemy from behind.
  • Back Kick (Coup de Grace): Leon hits the enemy's torso with a spinning kick, sending him flying. This is most commonly performed on heavily stunned, kneeling or blinded enemy.
  • Low Kick (Counter): A simple counterattack, Leon ducks under an attacking enemy and swiftly kicks them in the torso.
  • Weapon Bash (Elbow) (Counter): A counterattack, Leon evades an incoming attack and elbows the enemy in the back of the head before taking their weapon away and using it to cave in their head. This is performed as a counter-attack to an enemy attacking with a melee weapon such as an iron pipe or axe.

Skills

Buyable skills used during the events of Resident Evil 6 that upgrade his weaponry. Some are used only in the main campaign and others are used in the “Mercenaries” mode. Most of these skills give benefits based on gameplay, buff partners, or give in-game bonuses that wouldn't be applicable for a Death Battle, but some stand out:

(Note that all these are chosen by players in-game since Leon can only have a limited amount of skills at a time.)

Campaign Skills

  • Defense: Reduces damage from enemy fire arms anywhere from 10 to 20 to 50%
  • Lock-On: Steadies Leon's hands when shooting
  • Rock Steady: Reduces recoil after shooting
  • Piercing: Increases chance of piercing through multiple enemies with firearms
  • Eagle Eye: Adds an extra level of magnification to a sniper rifle scope (or any weapons with a scope)
  • Quick Reload: Reloads weapons 20% faster
  • Last Shot: Greatly increases the strength of Leon's final remaining shot from a firearm.
  • Second Wind: Increases damage (both from his firearms and melee attacks) by 10% when his health is low and when he's close to dying.

Frank

Fighting Moves

During the course of Dead Rising, Frank West gains many fighting moves from leveling up, allowing him to better defend himself even without a weapon. These moves include:
  • Disembowel: Quickly thrusts his hand inside of an enemy's body and rips out their entrails.
  • Double Lariat: A move famously used by Final Fight’s very own Mike Haggar (from another beloved Capcom franchise). Frank spins around with arms outstretched to knock enemies away. While useful for knocking away enemies crowding him, it can make him dizzy if overused.
  • Face Crusher: Grabs an enemy by the scruff of the neck and smashes their face into the ground.
  • Flying Dodge/Dodge Roll: Performs a dodge roll to the side to quick avoid attacks (also his main method for avoiding gun fire including automatic gunfire) and can help put out flames on his body if he's been set on fire.
  • Football Tackle: Rams into opponents and tackles them down.
  • Front Kick: Delivers a powerful kick which can knock away zombies.
  • Giant Swing: Grab a target by the ankles and spins them around before throwing them.
  • Hammer Throw: Grabs an enemy and shoves them, making them stumble into a wall or the line of danger.
  • Judo Throw: Grabs and throws an enemy over his shoulder (can rip off zombie arms in the process).
  • Jump Kick: Jumps into the air and delivers a kick.
  • Karate Chop: Delivers a Karate Chop that's strong enough to decapitate several zombies at once (including ones attacking from behind).
  • Kick Back: If Frank is grabbed from behind, he can deliver a powerful backward kick to the enemy to free himself.
  • Knee Drop: Comes crashing town on targets knee first delivering a powerful blow (some how protects Frank from taking falling damage).
  • Lift Up: Picks up an opponent and lifts them over head before throwing them. Can also carry them around for a bit.
  • Neck Twist: Gets on top of a downed Zombie and twists their head off with his bare hands.
  • Roundhouse Kick: Unleashes a powerful roundhouse kick upon landing. Can also be used to counter and trip them up during a fight like a sweep kick.
  • Sleeper Hold: A choke hold that strangles the victim that if applied long enough, and make them lose consciousness. In “Chop Till You Drop”, Frank’s sleeper hold is so intense that he can also snap a convict's neck in the process. In Dead Rising 4, it’s frequently used to take down enemies via sneak attacks.
  • Somersault Kick: A reference to another Capcom game, this time being Guile’s famous kick (also known as his flash kick). Frank does a backward flip while kicking upward, delivering a kick strong enough to take off a zombie’s head.
  • Suplex: Grabs the opponent from behind and slams them onto their back. Strong enough to crush zombie heads upon impact.
  • Two Hand Smash: Jumps up into the air and comes down performing Double axe handle onto the opponent's head/back.
  • Wall Kick: Kicks off a wall before kicking delivering a brutal kick to the opponent's chest.
  • Zombie Ride: Climbs onto Zombies and jumps on their heads to get around. Used for getting through zombie crowds.
  • Zombie Walk: Perfectly mimics zombie body language and sounds to blend in with a crowd of zombies without them being the wiser.

Skills

Skill02 by DoctorMooDB
In Dead Rising 4, Frank has many abilities and upgrades that may be unlocked via Skill Tree. While many of them are just boosts in attack power, health, or the potency of items/weapons, there are some that actually give him some notable abilities. (Note that these are all optional in game; based on what the player chooses to upgrade)

  • Marathoner: Frank gains unlimited Stamina and can sprint without tiring out or slowing down
  • Enemy Sense: Allows him to spot enemies from a greater distance than usual
  • Damage Resistance (Elemental): Gives Frank better resistance to explosive and elemental attacks. Elemental attacks includes fire, electricity, ice, and acid-based attacks (while they still hurt him, he's able to endure/power through them better and they don't damage him as much)
  • Healing: The ability to slowly regenerate health over time as long as he's standing still/not fighting.
  • Combat Healing: Is able to regenerate from damage even while in the middle of a fight (though it's still a slow process, it's halted momentarily if he takes another blow, and he can still be damaged at a faster rate than he can heal with non-stop relentless attacks)
  • Near Death Focus: Frank has a better chance of scoring a "critical hit" when his health is dangerously low and he's about to die.

Weaknesses

Leon

Leon may have defeated his fair share of superpowered monsters and taken more abuse than any normal person, but at the end of the day - and as many a game over scene in Resident Evil can attest to - he’s still just human and is subject to the same weaknesses a human has.

Case in point: he can only carry a set amount of ammunition for his guns before they run out, and he’s nearly helpless against more powerful opponents if he can’t retaliate.

Frank

As with his opponent, Frank is also human and thus subject to similar weaknesses. In his case, much of it has to do with his improvised weapons; Frank’s ability to use almost anything as a weapon makes him heavily reliant on the environment to fight, and trying to craft Combo Weapons in the open leaves him open to interruptions.

Every weapon he has is only temporary, as enough uses will wear down their durability and eventually destroy them. He can only carry up to a set amount on his person as well. Despite the years between his games taking place, he also has a lot less experience than you’d think. In fact, it’s implied that for the most part, his games are really a majority of the combat experience he has.

Summary

Leon

Advantages:
  • Faster.
  • Better experience and skill.
  • Has defeated monsters and enemies far more powerful than what Frank has fought in Dead Rising.
  • Firearms can keep Frank and his better melee weapons away.
  • Was in Project X Zone 2.
  • This.
Disadvantages:
  • Has no counter to Frank’s combo weapons, especially against the more hax weapons he can build.
  • If both are given healing items, Frank’s juices provide buffs which Leon’s herbs or First Aid Sprays lack.
  • Was an assist in Project X Zone 2.

Frank

Advantages:
  • Has the better melee and ranged arsenal with his Combo Weapons. More powerful ones could be used to net a possible win.
  • Exosuit and zombie powers close the stat gap a bit more than his base form.
  • Can combine things into the Exosuit to give it elemental abilities.
  • Juices heal and buff him, making them a superior healing option over Leon’s First Aid Spray or herb combinations.
  • Has fought more human opponents than Leon.
  • He was in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
Disadvantages:
  • Slower.
  • Less experienced.
  • No direct counter to Leon’s range advantage.
  • Has yet to fight monsters as powerful as anything seen in the Resident Evil series.
  • He was in Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite.
  • Normally, I’d say that being in Project X Zone was an advantage, but Leon was in the much better sequel.

Verdicts

RocketTrashPanda

Before I begin, I bear glad tidings from our Guildmaster (and the guy who posts these to Blogger), Grand Blazer. He bids you all a blessed day, but if you were to inquire about the problematic state of our bulletpoints, he states that he did the best he could and would recommend that you consume a certain part of his anatomy should you find them to be too unsightly.

What a nice guy. Anyway, verdict time, fuckheads!

In the continuation of “this lazy trash panda rabbit thing binge watching things that have been around for god knows how long”, I finally got off my ass and watched RWBY. Excellent show. Also, Ash vs. Evil Dead, although at that point I feel like I might have been better off watching the first two movies and Army of Darkness five times over.

Speaking of Evil Dead, we just lost Ash vs. Frank.

.

Unsure if I should be interpreting that as Ash laughing that he doesn’t die or him laughing at Frank. Maybe I shouldn’t interpret it at all.

If there’s one thing though that this match has over Ash vs. Frank, it’s probably a reason why Leon and Frank end up fighting each other. A random city falls victim to yet another zombie outbreak; Leon gets sent in by the government to suppress the threat while Frank sneaks in to get another scoop. They run into each other, and shit breaks down.

Frank starts wanting answers and pesters Leon, who’ll at least try to “nicely” get him to leave. Frank then thinks that Leon has to clean up the truth -- which to be fair, most Dead Rising soldiers have tried doing before -- and attacks him, Leon misunderstands it as Frank being related to whoever caused the outbreak because of Resident Evil logic, and…

Well, time to put my undying loyalty to our lord and savior Capcom to the test.

The main point of this entire debate all depends on whether or not you side with Leon and his better stats, or Frank with his better arsenal. This fight is hilariously close given that if you really get down to studying both of them in-depth, it’d be tough to call who wins. Trust me when I say that reaching a verdict on this episode wasn’t easy, but I’m confident enough that my pick should come out of this with a win.

First: stats - Leon has them, Frank not so much. Don’t get me wrong -- for the most part they seem to be equals on the surface, but you’d be ignoring the outright batshit crazy antics Resident Evil media post-RE4 have gone into, and how much Dead Rising… doesn’t have that, in comparison. That might seem silly when you look at the heat Frank’s packing, but let’s gloss over that for now and look at what both men have accomplished; the biggest issue you’ll see here is that, when it comes down to it, Frank’s feats can’t hold a candle to Leon’s.

Speed is something that’s solidly Leon’s for dodging fully automatic gunfire on multiple occasions, even from multiple shooters and B.O.W.s armed with miniguns. Frank has feats which seem similar, but the issue there is the volume; as far as we’ve researched, his best feat involving dodging full-auto fire was against Carlito in DR1, and that was a single man. Leon on the other hand avoided being shot by 10+ spec ops soldiers; this is all without mentioning similar QTE feats involving him dodging swipes and attacks from B.O.W.s.

Strength and durability are a lot closer, but still within an area Leon can manage. Frank’s best dura feat is taking a beating from Calder without wearing an Exosuit, and we’ve established that suit-wearers can move cars easy. Wearing one boosts Frank’s stats a bit, and the best strength feat we’ve gotten from him in that state is pulling out a parking meter from the ground and using it as a weapon; there’s also being able to move military humvees, so that helps. Impressive…

...but the issue is that Leon has dealt with far, far worse. Leon routinely takes hits from monsters a lot more varied than Frank’s baddies and comes out no worse for wear. He can escape from the grip of El Gigante - a B.O.W. that is strong enough to toss boulders and survive having one obliterated by having it dropped on him - by stabbing its hand with enough force to let him go. He took a punch that sent him flying across a chasm and quickly parkour-ed his way through a bunch of obstacles while showing no major injuries, and did the same thing when a Tyrant - another B.O.W. which can hold up a tank to prevent being run over - tossed him around like a ragdoll.

Then, there’s doing this:

...to this:

...and that thing did this:

...just to be clear, that’s Leon holding back the mutated Derek Simmons from biting him. Simmons can toss up trains. Yeah.

This also brings me to my next point: experience and skill. Both are experts in fighting monsters in their own universes, but you’d be hard-pressed to believe that anything Frank fights is on the same level as anything in Resident Evil. Leon has fought a lot more varied B.O.W.s in his career, including monsters which, quite frankly, make most Dead Rising enemies look pretty weak in comparison. Even points made about how Frank has had experience fighting spec ops soldiers - which technically, Leon is - and how that should help him take this fight would be ignoring Leon’s fights against other soldiers like Krauser and Chris.

The biggest thing that sort of solidifies how hilariously more experienced Leon is comes when you lay out every single major canonical event both have partaken in:
  • Leon: The Raccoon City outbreak (RE2) takes place on Leon’s first day as a R.P.D. officer in 1998. After recruitment, he participates in the following events - Operation Javier in 2002 (Darkside Chronicles), the Los Illuminados incident in 2004 (RE4), the Harvardville outbreak in 2005 (Degeneration), the end of the Eastern Slav Republic Civil War in 2011 (Damnation), Neo-Umbrella attacks at Tall Oaks and Lanshiang in 2013 (RE6) and Glenn Arias’ assault on New York sometime after that (Vendetta), If you assume Vendetta takes place in 2013 as well, that’s 7 major bioterror attacks Leon has participated in over the course of a 15 year career.
  • Frank: The Willamette outbreak (DR1) occurs in 2006, which begins Frank’s involvement with the zombie threat. He only participates in Chuck’s break in of Phenotrans in 2011 (DR2: Case West) and the second Willamette outbreak in 2021 (DR4). Here, Frank has 15 years of experience, but has only participated in 3 major incidents.
While spin-off material like Road to Fortune and Watchtower shows Frank being involved in other incidents, those never depict him as an active combatant, and considering that Leon has at this point has more canonical installments where he is a major player, has training and defeated monsters never seen before in the Dead Rising universe, and to a much lesser extent being in a profession where he has to deal with fighting a lot more than the normal person, it’s safe to say that Frank loses another category.

The only way Frank can survive this all lies in his arsenal, and that really depends on what you give him to start off the fight, especially if you intend to give him haxy weapons like the Ice Sword. Here, we find the opposite of our previous dilemma: Frank may have not fought any crazy B.O.W.s nor does he have Leon’s stats, but Leon doesn’t really have much experience dealing with the outright bullshit-level of shenanigans Frank’s Combo Weapons afford him.

There are two things though that help Leon’s case here: we’ve established that he’s much faster than Frank, and so trying to dodge the latter’s attacks in melee range should be easy, and while his guns are pretty boring in comparison, they do give him an advantage in a long-range battle. Again, Leon’s speed and more prominent bullet-timing feats should help him here, especially in the event that Frank has ranged weapons of his own.

There’s also one thing you have to be aware of as well when talking about arsenals in that both Leon’s and Frank’s are sort of limited. Leon can only carry so much ammo, and Frank can only carry a finite amount of weapons which all have their durability limits. Now, it’s possible both can scavenge things from the environment, but therein lies a few problems.

Assuming that the environment is neutral and should not favor either side, then Leon isn’t likely to suddenly find ammo in the middle of the fight. On the other hand, Frank thrives in re-using anything as a weapon, but when you consider some of the materials that go into making Combo Weapons, it’s unlikely he’ll be able to make those on the fly too and might just be stuck making do with using raw items.

In my opinion, this all leads to Leon and Frank clashing in what’s likely to be a pure-melee fight with a few side weapons but no access to anything major, and given that Leon already has the majority of the advantages in this fight, it’s his to win.

TL;DR: Frank may have the arsenal advantage, but when none of it is trumping Leon’s superior stats and experience… I hate to say it, but Mr. West:

Oh boy, my first one of these. Let’s hope I don’t fuck it up. I was pretty excited when I first heard this fight announced, as I really like both series. Even better, it’s in this weird space for a match where it’s actually debateable. It’s actually the closest fight of this season so far, and it’s actually close enough that as long as Screwattack explains themselves well enough, they can’t really be considered wrong.

That may seem a bit much to some people, but let’s break it down a little. First we start off where all good vs debates should. The stats. We’ll start with the speed. Leon is definitely faster than Frank. He has more speed feats, as well as his being a bit better than Frank’s even if not calculable, such as avoiding gunfire from simply more people.

Next, strength. I believe Frank definitely holds the advantage here, should his exosuit be included. First thing that would need to be addressed is Leon’s best strength feat, which many would point towards holding back the head of Simmons for a couple seconds, when Simmons can flip a friggin train! Damn, Leon scales! …. Nah, sorry, it… Really doesn’t work that way. Leon dodged the initial lunge, and only held back Simmons’ head as it tried to munch at him. I think it goes without saying that holding back his head is NOT equivalent to holding back the force needed to flip a train. To give an example, it’s like a bull standing totally still, but trying to gore you using only it’s neck muscles. Sure, you could still get hurt by it, but is the force it’s hitting you with ANYWHERE close to what it would have coming your way with a full sprinting charge? Certainly not. As well, the train flipping feat is later in the boss fight, after Simmons undergoes a mutation to gain the blade-like appendage he uses hit hit the train. And keep in mind, a good portion of how Leon beats anything above his weight class is usually through liberal abuse to weak spots. Meanwhile, the Exosuits have quite prominent feats of ripping up traffic sections with boulders of concrete, and knocking around military vehicles like humvees, which weigh over 10000 pounds! I really do think Frank in the exo suit holds a solid advantage here.

Next comes durability. Now THIS is a pretty good toss up. Frank has his feat of taking a complete thrashing from Calder, and Leon survives trees being swung at him, boulders hitting him, getting whacked large distances, and the like. Honestly, Leon’s unlucky that in the games he always seems to JUST dodge being hit by anything crazy big, or else this category would be his in spades. As an example, Simmons does another charge later in the boss fight, and it knocks Leon back. But it didn’t actually HIT Leon, only the impact of Simmons landing on the ground made him tumble back. If only he took a few more straight on attacks in the games, and didn’t get one-shot so often by failing quick time events. As it stands though, this one might be a tie for Durability.

Skill and Experience? Let’s not even pretend there’s a debate here. Leon. The guy with 15 years of active experience and seven known major incidents vs about three incidents over the same amount of time, and a major implication that he did absolutely nothing in that time between in combat. Leon is so much more experienced it’s not even funny.

Intelligence is a bit of a tough story though. One would be inclined to say Leon has a more traditionally smart mindset, and remains strategic and calm in battle, but there’s something to be said for the sheer mad scientist-ing Frank can do. In addition, in battle, Frank is much more inclined to use trap setting and planning than Leon usually is. In fact, in Dead Rising 4, Frank even has a full inventory slot dedicated to traps. So I’m inclined to say Frank, but I’ll put it as a tie because the two use very different kinds of intellect in combat.

As it stands, Leon would probably flatten Frank without much issue, but then we come to the whole reason a debate even exists here, the very focus of Dead Rising itself. Weapons. Let’s be frank here, Leon doesn’t have much in terms of Weaponry. He has quite a few, yes, but basically any weapon Leon has, Frank has the exact same one, and then a crazy stupid version of it. In honesty, I don’t think the paddlesaw, defiler, anything like that is REALLY worth mentioning right now, because Frank has several weapons that bring out that secret fourth part of the stat trinity. Hax.

Frank has a massive number of weapons that are exceptionally powerful, wacky, unpredictable, and most of all, game ending. The Magic Wand is literal transmutation, the ice sword freezes enemies solid, as well as tons of other ice weapons like grenades and trap santas. The Suckmaster 9000 makes a tornado that sucks enemies off their feet into the grinding turbine. The Electric Axe is a massive electrical AoE, and the Umbrella gun is a literal death ray (Would certainly fitting if Leon died to an umbrella gun). Going further into this, the exo suit with some of the powers like the ice one can make a literal tornado of icy winds that freeze foes solid. Add in the various juices for effects like ten seconds of invulnerability, and it’s even more major. In all, Frank destroys in this category.

So we come to the end, and… I’m left Humming and Hah-ing a little. To be honest, if you gave Frank say… The magic wand, Ice Sword, invulnerability juice, a suckmaster 9000, umbrella gun, and the ice Exo suit, I would say Frank crushes Leon here. But…. I doubt we’re really going to see that. Frank can bring 12 items to the fight, and I highly doubt that they’re going to actually GIVE Frank all of his best stuff. In honesty, I’m not sure how I feel about that, as it feels like gimping the character. Most of this fight for me really comes down to what they give Frank, and if they give him the goods, he should be able to pull out a win against the relatively mundane kit Leon has. The idea that Leon crushes in melee, or at long range, are a bit weird when Frank has numerous weapons for just such purposes. The umbrella gun is a literal beam, and unlike the beam hallway, they aren’t being sent at him in a predictable manner, and Frank can swing it how he likes, or he can just throw in a suckmaster 9000. Then comes melee range. Yes, Leon’s speed advantage means he’ll be able to evade Frank’s blows, but really, Leon’s experience advantage means quite little when Frank can wave a wand a little and you’re suddenly a gingerbread man. Or perhaps he just swings a sword. Leon has faced swords, he can certainly dodge that attack. But what Leon simply would not know is that the sword just sent liquid nitrogen through the air, and he’s now a Leon Ice-cream Sandwich. Part of what keeps Frank in this fight is the sheer unpredictability of his potential kit. But I say exactly that. Potential. If they send in Frank with a baseball bat and a camera, he’s boned. I think then, in the spirit of representing a character with their maximum, I think Frank has this. How funny is it that both of their best showings are from Dead Rising 4 and Resident Evil 6?

Either way, it looks like depending on what Frank’s given, Leon’s Willa-Met his match. I’m predicting the underdog victory of Frank West.

(I’m just dropping in from my own little world…)

As a HUGE fan of Frank West with some entries in the Dead Rising series being some of my favorites, it was an honor to be part of this prediction blog and it was great to research Frank West again to discover that he’s only tougher than I remembered.  It was also interesting to go back and revisit Resident Evil, another franchise with entries that are also some of my favorite games as well (Especially 4, which just happens to star Frank’s opponent here) so without further adieu, here’s how I think it’ll go down:
Right off the bat, it’s clear that Leon is a better trained and much more experienced fighter. Yes, Frank has defeated a fully trained special forces leader himself as proven when he overpowered Brock Mason unarmed at the end of the first game (and how often he’s able to easily take down/over power soldiers) but Leon is on a different league from any of them considering all his other advantages.

Leon has the speed advantage, but I argue that Frank has experience fighting enemies who more agile than he is. That said, those more agile psychopaths are also very mentally unhinged and erratic compared to Leon. While I feel Frank can keep up, Leon’s speed, honed skills, and focus will keep him from getting hurt too much.

In terms of strength and durability; while both fighters can take tons of abuse and have some crazy strength feats, I argue that Leon being able to hurt/hold back and take beatings from Simmons (Who’s monster form was able to flip a freaking train off the tracks) is more impressive than Frank taking a beating from Calder (Who at best could likely only flip a truck with his strikes) who he needed an Exosuit to compete with. Even if Frank’s Exosuit can somewhat close the strength gap, it can only do so temporarily.

Heck, most of the creatures within the Resident Evil Franchise are more dangerous than most of the kinds of threats Mr. West has taken down. Sure you have things like Gas Zombies and Evo Zombies who are stronger and faster than regular zombies, but they’re nowhere near big or strong as what Leon has faced.

So far, things don’t look so good for Frank… BUT he does have a few things going for him; his weapons. Frank’s arsenal and fighting style are much more creative and unpredictable compared to Leon’s, and a lot of them can do serious damage to if not outright kill Leon if given the chance. Frank also has infinite stamina and a light healing factor thanks to his skill tree, which can definitely help him last longer in this fight.

That said, Leon’s arsenal, while more predictable, is much more practical. Being that it’s primarily made of guns (combined with Leon’s impressive gunmanship skills) means he has the long range advantage. Even if Frank can overpower Leon up close with his combo weapons or exosuit, Leon can always fall back on fighting from a distance.

Yes, Frank’s arsenal is WAY more diverse and Leon has likely never fought anyone with some of Frank’s wackier weapons and tactics, but it’s also dependant on what’s in his environment and what he can get his hands on. Considering that it’s completely circumstantial and random what he’ll find, I’d argue that the chances of him being able to find exactly what ht needs to put together some of his most powerful weapons (or mix together any drinks that give him the proper buffs he needs) to take down Leon is low. I’m sure Frank could win if he had immediate access to all his best weapons from the start, but it’s doubtful that he would.

Yes, Frank’s infinite stamina and light healing factor can help him last long enough to get what he needs, (Assuming that those are even factored into this fight since those are based on player input) but infinite stamina =/= infinite vitality. Plus not only is his healing factor slow, but it stops the moment he starts taking damage again. Considering Leon has many bullets and explosives, he could likely damage Frank at a faster rate than he could heal.

In a scenario where the two had no weapons and it was a bare handed brawl, Frank would be able to keep up but Leon would be the victor. With weapons thrown into the mix, Frank will undoubtedly catch Leon off guard here and there, but ultimately I feel that Leon’s speed, skills, experience, strength, durability, and overall more practical arsenal/fighting style will be too much for my favorite photo journalist. In the very least I hope Frank can go down fighting and give Leon a VERY hard time before going down.

Unfortunately, Frank is DEAD, and I doubt he’ll be RISING any time soon.

Ok, so Pit v Sora was great. Time to see what’s next…

…...ok, I’m ok with this.

First off, why is this not Frank VS Ash? Not to say this is a bad matchup, but I just feel Ash would’ve made for a better fight. Ah, oh well.

Next, I should note that I haven’t played a single game in either series and contributed essentially nothing to this blog. So if I screw up on info, now you know why.

Alright, so Leon VS Frank. Interesting pick, and looking into them a bit, I understand why these two were paired together. And the match itself is actually really close, by far the closest match this season yet. However, while it’s not a stomp regardless, it’s pretty clear who wins regardless of the situation.

What I mean by that is how this goes depends on one thing: Can Frank keep Leon away with his vast array of weapons long enough?

If yes, Frank wins. If no, Leon wins. Let’s break down why.

Let’s start with physical strength/durability. Frank can swing a chainsaw with one hand, lift zombies over his head and throw them, and beat down people with his bare hands. Decently strong, reaching around Small Building Level. However, Leon can match Chris Redfield’s boulder punching/ moving strength, can move his own boulders by himself, and also beat down people with his bare hands, ranging from Small-Large Building Level.

Winner: Leon

Now for speed. Both can dodge bullets from close-range, but Leon can dodge a room full of lasers, and keep up with other High Supersonic-Low Hypersonic characters in Resident Evil.

Winner: Leon

Now for training/experience. Leon is professionally trained martial artist, and is a master of disarming people of their weaponry. Frank was mostly self taught, and doesn’t have any professional training in specific martial arts. Pretty basic, if you ask me.

Winner: Leo-

“WAIT!! Frank has fought professionally trained soldiers before. Why is Leon any different?” -Most people on team Frank I’ve debated this with

Well, fine. I guess this is true, but here’s the thing:

One, he doesn’t fight people like Leon often. He’s probably not used to it at the moment.

Two, the people Frank fought most likely are trained in different martial art than Leon is.

Three, Frank probably beat them because he’s physically superior to them, which he’s not against Leon.

Four, if I remember right, this experience didn’t help Nathan Drake win his Death Battle, now did it?

As you see, this argument, while not invalid by any means, doesn’t really mean much in the long run.

As I was saying before I was rudely interrupted, Winner: Leon

Finally, weaponry, and this is why this is such a debate. To be blunt, Leon is completely outclassed in every way, shape, and form. Frank has essentially any weapon imaginable. He’s so versatile, he can make use stuffed animals as weaponry. This guy is probably the most adaptive person I’ve seen in fiction yet minus maybe Bullseye from Marvel.

Winner: Frank

Essentially, Leon is stronger, faster, tougher, more experienced, and is better in H2H, whereas Frank has pretty much every weapon Leon has and more. So basically, Frank just needs to stay away long enough to use as many weapons as possible and overwhelm Leon, but if Leon can get in close enough to resort to CQC, then Frank’s fate is sealed. So what’s more likely here? Well, as much as I want Frank to win, and as close as this is, I feel that Leon’s physicality and experience tip the scales.

Yes, Frank has fought people similar to Leon before, but we don’t know how strong those people were, and from what we’ve seen both of these two do, Leon seems to be physically superior, by both direct feats and scaling. Plus, it’s not like Frank has anything that’s both A.) fatal and B.) a surprise to Leon at all. Leon’s dealt with quite a few things to be that surprised by what weapons Frank possesses. If anything, Leon will be more surprised by how many he has.

So while it’s possible for Frank to win and even though I do want him to win, I just feel that Leon’s advantages outweigh Frank’s, and have yet to be proven otherwise.

Sorry Frank, but you can’t rise to the challenge this time(I’m gonna see myself out now)

MarioGMan25

Given I’m predisposed to root for Frank because I’ve played more Dead Rising games. But I shall give the benefit of the doubt. Leon has a bunch of speed and durability feats that challenge or even outright surpass Frank’s. But Frank’s arsenal is ginaourmous, and doesn’t require ammo most of the time, like Leon’s. But I will say this, the only way for Frank to beat Leon is if he’s given the best of the best of his weapons. Exo suit definitely gives him an edge here. If Frank isn’t given his best stuff and has to either craft or find it, he’ll have a hard time fending off Leon’s assault and may fall because of it. So it’s another what if thing for me: If Frank’s got his best stuff for a fight, then yeah he’ll win, if not, then he’s defeated by Leon’s superior speed and fighting style. Though I will say this, Frank has more experience fighting humans than Leon does, who mostly fights shambling corpses and giant hulking beasts with highly televised attacks.

Frank seems to have more Chainsaw defence than Leon does, as Frank has been slashed a lot by a crazed chainsaw clown while Leon goes down in one hit by a crazed chainsaw doctor. Jury is still our on how well Leon takes bullets, but Frank can tank a LOT of hits via bullets. There’s also the matter of their healing items.

I know Death Battle doesn’t like using healing items, I wonder if there’s sort of rule about whether how common healing items are compared to the other. Because I’ll say this: Food is a lot more common than those herbs, and Frank can combine those foods for some amazing boosts if he finds the right ones. But this is all conjecture on whether they’ll include food and herbs or not, and whether Frank still has to find his best stuff. Over all though…

I hope Frank can rise to the challenge, but he’s as good as dead if he ain’t prepared.
