ROUND 2! Or 4? 42? Who’s counting anyways? Nobody, that’s who!

Mario, the superstar savior of the Mushroom Kingdom. Sonic the Hedgehog, the fastest thing alive. You may recall that some several odd years ago, Death Battle actually did this match-up already. Well, what’s all this if that fight was over and done with, you may ask? Much like Goku vs. Superman, it’s the runback that can never ever seem to die. Ever since the legendary console wars of the early 1990s onwards waged by Nintendo and Sega, these two all-time great gaming icons have had their legacies linked in a rivalry that has since outlasted the very conflict it was born out from. With that rivalry came an endless torrent of schoolyard arguments and online debates about which mascot and series was ultimately better than the other, including - and most importantly - who would kick the other’s butt in a one-on-one fight to the bitter end.

Despite the outcome of their previous go-around, the portly Italian plumber and his speedy, spike-y nemesis are set to clash one more time for the show’s milestone 100th episode, helmed by an animation studio that made a cartoon bear and dog fight each other last year which we TOTALLY covered. All kidding aside, it’s been over half a decade since Mario and Sonic’s initial encounter with lots of changes occurring on both sides of the equation thanks to the tons of new material each of them have amassed in the interim. Given such an influx, it seemed fitting that these long-opposing forces make one more odyssey into the stage of history to settle this feud once and for all. Will Mr. Video Game Himself finally get his chance to shine in the spotlight, or is the Blue Blur going to prove without a doubt that his rival is always going to just be too slow?

A Heads-Up From Ya Bois

While we would’ve normally gone batshit insane and thrown everything Mario and Sonic had at the wall to see what sticks for this -- that was actually how most of the early discussion for this went down, that… isn’t going to be the case here. There’s a very specific set of rules Death Battle’s going to heavily enforce here, so this means that we have to cut out certain sources for analysis like the Archie comics for Sonic or the old Mario cartoons - mostly, anything that doesn’t fall within the canon presented by the actual games isn’t going to show up here. Now, why exactly this is the case despite the fact that Death Battle has used them before is something you may ask yourselves, and to be honest, we’re doing that too.

To help y’all try and understand where we’re coming from, assume that this is a brand-new match-up with no ties to the original 2011 episode. I guess you could maybe pretend that the first one didn’t exist to begin with if it helps.

Side note: This blog is likely going to be longer than our Sora vs. Pit or Naruto vs. Ichigo blogs. We consider that to be somewhat sad for unknown reasons.

Background

Mario

In the far-off world full of fantastical creatures and varied landscapes called the Mushroom Kingdom, its ruler Princess Peach governs her subjects with a gentle heart and presides over the land with much respect and adoration directed towards her. However, not all share this disposition towards her as Bowser, the King of the Koopas, can attest to. Since time immemorial, the ill-tempered despot has tried to kidnap Peach in many a hair-brained scheme to take over the Mushroom Kingdom and in certain other cases, the universe itself. However, his plans have been foiled repeatedly by the Princess’ resident knight in shining armor: a humble handyman clad in red named Mario, one of the seven destined Star Children long been considered to be one of the greatest heroes the Kingdom has ever seen.

The sight of his trademark red cap, stuffy mustache and blue overalls is enough for even non-gamers to recognize Mario for his role as Nintendo’s one true mascot, and like his supposed occupation implies, his origins have very humble beginnings. Mario was created by student developer Shigeru Miyamoto near the turn of the 1980s as Nintendo began to move away from making hanafuda playing cards and other small-time businesses and settled into the young video game industry. Originally intending to develop a video game based on characters from the Popeye comic series, the company’s subsequent failure to acquire the license forced Miyamoto to create new ones; the end result became known as Donkey Kong, released for arcades in 1981 and helped launch Nintendo into mainstream popularity at the time.

Once previously known as “Jumpman” during his first year, the newly-renamed Mario quickly established his own niche in the years after clashes against his overgrown primate arch-nemesis, with 1985’s Super Mario Bros. being a revolutionary title that not only laid the groundwork for future platformers but for the massive franchise that saw him assume the role of his parent company’s public figurehead. Hundreds of releases in the coming years not only refined the formula it had laid out, but also introduced the world to other members of his growing supporting cast, including his lanky twin Luigi, the villainous doppelgangers Wario and Waluigi, the cheerful dinosaur Yoshi, the peppy tomboy princess Daisy and even the original Donkey Kong’s grandson, who had also evolved into another popular mascot in his own right.

Even in the modern gaming landscape, Mario remains relatively uncontested in his status as one of the greatest pop culture mascots of all time. His series holds the record as the best-selling video game franchise in history, spawning installments in nearly every major gaming genre, almost all of whom have been critically received by gamers both casual and hardcore, journalists and industry figureheads alike. Whether he’s off jumping his way through an endless amount of death traps to save Peach and the world from Bowser’s clutches, speeding his way to meet the checkered flag at the end of Rainbow Road, teaming up with his twin to defeat the resident monster of the week, very few true industry icons have matched the massive influence Mario has had for the last near-40 years, making him a truly one-of-a-kind superstar.

Sonic

On one random day, a maniacal mustachioed scientist named Doctor Eggman - or in some circles, Dr. Ivo Robotnik - decided that he wanted to conquer the world and establish his Empire as the most dominant force in existence by harnessing anything and everything he could get his hands on to fuel his chaotic campaign, whether it involved roboticizing the local wildlife, awakening ancient spirits and building the biggest and baddest war machines ever. Despite his incredible intellect and massive amount of resources, several freedom fighters have taken it upon themselves to counter the would-be ruler’s threat time after time and ensure his mad plans never reach fruition. Chief among these heroes is Eggman’s rival and the biggest thorn in his side to date, the fun-loving and self-professed fastest thing alive: Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sonic’s devil-may-care and daring disposition as a world-faring drifter who craves adventure may have its basis in the circumstances Sega found themselves in when the 1990s swung around. The company sought to replace their former mascot Alex Kidd in an attempt to compete with the rising force of Nintendo, and out of the multiple designs initially pitched to higher-ups, one which resembled the azure hedgehog that would become their future symbol won out. With further refinement from artist Naoto Ohshima and programmer Yuji Naka, the former “Mr. Needlemouse” was introduced to the world on his self-titled game released in 1991, bringing lots high-octane thrills very few titles had at the time. At long last, Sega came across their speedy savior and staked their claim as one of the best studios in gaming’s growing history.

As his name implies, Sonic’s claim to fame is his speed; quick reflexes and fast movements defined him during his debut, and still continue to shape who he is to this day along with a cool and playful attitude that made him stand out among his contemporaries thanks to how much of a personality he showed. Taunting finger wags, irritation at no progression and the later implementation of snarky voice acting near the mark of the millennium that showcased his seemingly endless ability to make fun of anyone he crossed paths with endeared him to audiences. This is all still without mentioning his quirky set of friends and enemies, including his gadgeteer best friend Miles “Tails” Prower, on-and-off romantic “interest” Amy Rose, the punch happy Knuckles, resident dark anti-hero rival Shadow and loads more over his near 30-year run.

With their leap to the third dimension, Sonic and his motley crew of misfits helped define a new generation of gamers drawn to their worldwide escapades against Eggman and an increasingly larger rogue’s gallery, all while commanding the attention of one of the most passionate fan bases seen in gaming history. Through various spin-offs and crossovers, several animated projects, a long-running comic line from Archie Comics (rest in peace, sweet prince), the Blue Blur has continued to stay true to his credo of seeking thrills and kicking the butts of evildoers everywhere with nothing but his quick wit and unparalleled speed. Even in the darkest of hours when all hope can seem lost, Sonic can always be counted on to face whatever perils he has to deal with, ever confident that he will conquer any obstacle that gets in his way no matter what.

Power-Ups

Mario

Super Mushroom

A multi-purpose mushroom that can increase Mario’s height, restore his health, and increase his movement speed.

Mega Mushroom

Turns Mario into an invincible giant that can crash through just about anything. This is one of his few power-ups that has a time limit.

Mini Mushroom

Turns Mario really small so he can fit into tiny tunnels or run on water.

Bee Mushroom

Gives Mario a Bee suit that allows him to fly for a limited time and stick to honey covered surfaces.

Big Mushroom

SMM-SMB-Mushroom.pngSMM-SMB-30th-Anniversery-Amiibo-ModernMushroom.png
Placed into the world by some ungodly force, it turns the world into a trippy CRT television universe and makes Mario even bigger than last time, able to barge through bricks with… some ease.

Boo Shroom

Gives Mario the powers of a Boo, turning intangible, invincible and flying, all without the debuff of incredible shyness. The effect stops instantly if Mario is touched by direct sunlight.

Rock Mushroom

Allows Mario to roll into a giant boulder and act like a bowling ball.

Spring Mushroom

Sticks Mario in a giant spring and he bounces around. Unremarkable, wouldn't recommend using it.

Fire Flower

Allows Mario to rapidly throw fast moving fireballs at enemies with a chance to set them on fire if they don’t outright die from it.

Ice Flower

Allows Mario to throw balls of ice that bounce along the ground similarly to fire balls but a bit slower. First appearing in Partners in Time, it applies random debuffs to enemies. In Galaxy, they turn Mario into solid ice, which allows him to walk on water and ice skate anywhere. In their latest appearance in the New Super Mario Bros games, they allow Mario to freeze enemies in large blocks of ice that he can then pick up and throw into walls, killing the enemy instantly.

The Cat Bell

Gives Mario a cat fursuit… but the suit itself also gives him razor sharp claws that let him climb vertical surfaces (even slippery ones like the flagpole) and do dive attacks against enemies in sight… it also makes him meow a lot for some reason. There’s also the Lucky Cat Bell which allows Mario to turn into a Solid Gold Cat Statue with a ground pound which makes him invincible for about 12 seconds.

The Double Cherry

The Double Cherry can be consumed to create a perfect clone, and multiple can be used at a time (limits on usage are unclear), each being an exact copy of Mario at that point in time and no matter which order they die, the last one is just the regular character and won’t die in one hit. They also copy your exact movements in gameplay, though Bowser’s use of them shows this to just be a game mechanic.

Penguin Suit

Puts Mario in a suit that gives him better mobility in water, better traction on ice, and the option to slide on his belly. Also has the power to throw ice balls like the Ice Flower.

Boomerang Flower

Gives Mario the ability to toss boomerangs to damage foes or collect items.

Cloud Flower

Allows Mario to generate 3 cloud platforms to stand on and gain a bit of high ground. Also makes his jumps floatier.

Gold Flower

A flower that turns Mario pure gold (though with no effect on his movement) and allows him to throw golden fireballs that explode on contact with a small radius, anything hit grants him more coins. Mario really likes gold in New Super Mario Bros 2.

Acorns

Gives Mario a flying squirrel outfit that let’s him double jump, along with a special P-Acorn that gives him infinite jumps.

Leafs

Super Leafs give Mario a Tanooki suit that lets him transform into a stature and fall slowly

There’s also Mario’s various clothing items you can just find lying around.

Metal Hat

The Metal Cap is from Mario 64, which turns Mario solid steel(?) and ups his speed and power for a tradeoff in gravity being stronger on him.

Vanish Cap

Allows Mario intangibility and he can walk through enemies, mirrors, and everything but solid walls.

Wing Cap

The Wing Cap which can have Mario fly if he has the proper loft and momentum from either a triple jump or a cannon (which there is something called the Cannonballer which is a pocket-sized cannon Mario can pull out that launches him into the air to land on an enemy)

The Blue Shell

The Blue Shell is a koopa shell he can wear himself, but since he’s not as cowardly as a basic koopa, he can stop spinning whenever he wants. (Look up the koopas stats for how strong that damn thing is)

Buzzy Beetle Shell

A Buzzy Beetle Shell is the hollowed out body of one of Mario’s enemies that he can put on his head that allows attacks from aboves to be bounced off by the sheer defence of the shell (Thwomps bounce on contact with it if they land on Mario’s head while he’s wearing it)
There’s also a Spiny Shell Helmet which acts the same but kills enemies instead of bouncing them (being one of the few things ever to kill Thwomps).

The Cannon Box

A wearable Cannon that fires chargeable cannonballs. The longer the charge, the farther the cannonballs fly.

Cape Feather

See the source image
A feather that gives Mario a cape that he can whack things with (which spins them in the other direction for a second, keeping their momentum) and can use it to fly indefinitely. The cape it provides can even be used to reflect any and all projectiles through magical means.

Frog Suit

A Suit that makes him jump around on land but he swims faster. It also allows him greater jumping height

Goomba Shoes

SMM-SMB3-Goomba'sShoe.pngSMM-SMB-Goomba'sShoe.pngSMM-SMB-HighHeel-Goomba.pngSMM-SMB3-HighHeel-Goomba.png
(Fabulous)
Finding a Goomba with an oversized shoe is always funny. Now you too can wear them, bouncing across spikes at an increased speed.

The Hammer Suit

Turns Mario into a Hammer Brother but with actual full movement of his body instead of the occasional shimmy or jump.

Light Box

A giant flashlight Mario wears that’s so bright it can actually defeat ghosts.

Propeller Box/Propeller Mushroom

Allows Mario to spin high into the air and control how slowly he descends

P-Wing

Gives Mario infinite flight or straight up just warps him to the end of a level.

Power Star

Temporarily make Mario rainbow colored and invincible, merely touching him like this can kill you. They’re known for granting increased strength and speed, as well as extra abilities for those who know how to use it.

Red Star

Grants Mario free flight through the air for a limited time while kickass music plays in the background.

Blue Spiny Shell

MKWii Blue Shell
This bomb is not just the bane of every Mario Kart player’s existence, but a homing target for whoever is definitively in first place during a competition. If Smash Bros is any indication, it can still be used during fights, and if the user is in first place, it’ll settle for whoever is in second.

Plunder Chest

The Plunder Chest can take any item from an enemy of Mario’s choosing, but it randomly selects what item it takes.

Mini Mega Hammer

This hammer can randomly grow or shrink your opponent. So basically, it’s a hit or miss.

Capsules

Hammer Bro Capsule

Hammer Bro. Capsule
Acts as a magic landmine. Whoever lands on it will have summoned a Hammer Bro, who will proceed to attack them. This also steals currency and gives it to Mario.

Mr Blizzard Capsule

Mr. Blizzard Capsule
Acts as a magic landmine. Whoever lands on it will have a Mr. Blizzard dropped on them. This will also steal currency and gives it to Mario.

Bob-omb Capsule

Bob-omb Capsule
Acts as a magic landmine. Whoever triggers it for the third time will have a Bob-omb blow up on them. This will also steal currency and gives it to Mario.

Chain Chomp Capsule

Chain Chomp Capsule
For a 15 coin fee, you can send it to attack any enemy of your choosing and basically mug them for cash. For 30 coins, when he attacks the enemy, he’ll steal a star off them. Whether or not it can be convinced to steal something else is unknown.

Piranha Plant Capsule

Piranha plant capsule
Acts as yet another magic landmine. Any enemy who lands on it will be attacked from under by a Piranha Plant and will have half of their currency stolen and given to Mario after a good chew and spit.

Candy

Cashzap Candy

Cashzap Candy
Covers Mario in electricity and allows him to shoot real lightning straight down from the sky to hit his enemy. This also steals half of their currency.

Bloway Candy

Bloway Candy
Turns Mario into a living tornado. Any person he runs into is blown away a significant distance.

Bowlo Candy

Bowlo Candy
Shapeshifts Mario into a ball shape. If he runs his enemy over in this state he steals 10 units of the enemy’s currency.

RPG Items

Healing Items (Elixirs, Mushrooms, Nuts, Froggie Drink)

Basic healing items that restore health.

Syrup

Sweet syrup that is capable of restoring Mario’s FP/SP/BP.

Able Juice/Refreshing Herbs

Cures all status effects from one character.

Bad Mushroom

Poisons an enemy.

Boo Biscuit

Grants Mario complete immunity but prevents him from dealing damage.

Bracer

Boosts defense by 100%.

Some sweets that restore health and SP points.

Earlier Times

Restarts a battle.

Energizer

Increases offense by 100%

Fire Bomb

Deals fire damage to all enemies.

Ice Bomb

Deals ice damage to all enemies.

Kerokero Cola

Fully restores health and Flower Points.

Muku Cookie

Restores health and cures status effects.

Peppers

Some spicy peppers capable of boosting defense (green), offense, (red), or speed (blue) when consumed.

Pure Water

Defeats all ghost enemies.

Red Essence

Temporarily makes one ally invincible and cures all status effects.

Retry Clock

Automatically restarts the battle if Mario is defeated.

Rock Candy

Deals neutral damage to all enemies.

Secret Box

Performs a random badge effect.

Sheep Attack

Transforms enemies into sheep.

Shock Bomb

A bomb that might make enemies dizzy.

Sleepy Bomb

Puts all enemies to sleep.

Star Egg

Summons a bird to damage all enemies, weaker than Rock Candy but cannot be used up.

Yoshi-Ade

Increases offense and defense 100%.

Yoshi Cookie

Summons Yoshi to eat an enemy.

Bros Attack Items

A set of items Mario obtains in the M&L games starting at Partners in Time that he typically uses with Luigi’s assistance (though there is no reason why he can’t use some of them on his own but lol game mechanics)

Green Shell / Red Shell

A shell Mario kicks at the enemy with support from Luigi. Later one he can obtain a Red Shell which is more durable than their green counterparts and have the ability to home in on enemies.

Cannonballer

A small pocket sized cannon that can launch you high into the air and you land on the the enemy

Smash Egg

Without Luigi to help with this, it will only hit the enemy once but if he’s lucky he can get an item from it

Pocket Chomp

A Chain chomp in a small gacha ball that you can release and, either it will chase after you, or go right after the enemy. But you can lead it into the enemy if it chases you. And if it catches you it doesn’t even damage you.

Trampoline

Exactly what it sounds like, it’s a trampoline that you can bounce off of as many times as possible until you land on it wrong and it just bounces away.

Copy Flower

Like the Double Cherries times 100, spawning a near infinite amount of Marios & Co. and attack so fast until one of them is tripped or, presumably, damaged.

The Mix Flower

Oddly only appears in Mario & Luigi Partners in Time despite it being AWESOME, is a flower that summons a GIANT deadly fireball into the sky that Mario (& co.) throw smaller fireballs into to keep it aloft and make it bigger until it finally falls onto the enemy. Though since only Mario is in the fight, the fireball itself will do a little more than minimal damage, but still, it’s a giant ass fireball that explodes when it hits the ground, lots of damage anyway.

Jump Helmet

Kind of requires Luigi to be useful unless Mario can somehow use it defensively and block Sonic from jumping on his head

Yoohoo Cannon

8 Cannons appear on the ground with 8 clones of Mario (& Luigi) and must launch them in the right order by remembering who’s in which cannon. Unsure if it works with 1 person.

Super Bouncer

A Big ol’ Damaging Beach ball. Doesn’t really do much damage without Luigi attached to the ball.

Spin Pipe

Mario & Luigi jump into a pipe and must remember who’s on the bottom so that pipe so they do not fail the attack.

Mighty Meteor

Send a giant meteor into the air and Mario must whack the meteor at the enemy until he misses.

Snack Basket

Mostly obsolete as Luigi is the one who eats all the food and Mario lifts & throws him to belly flop the enemy

Magic Window

The window keeps appearing and disappearing as Mario keeps jumping out of one, onto the enemy, and into another. It keeps going until he misses.

Falling Star

Summons a star that floats around in the sky before flying high into the air and crashing into the unlucky target of Mario’s choosing. While the star is floating Mario can throw smaller stars (if the big star’s color is currently red) that follow the big star in its crash landing.

Bye Bye Cannon

Similar to the Cannonballer but with more horizontal distance than vertical distance.

Bomb Derby

Unsure how it works without Luigi, but Mario summons a bunch of bombs and hammers them into the enemy.

Jet-Board Bash

Deals minimal damage without Luigi to increase the engine speed. Mario rides a rocket skateboard where he then whacks the enemy with his hammer at fast speeds.

Zee Egg

Summons a giant bird that launches a giant rainbow fireball that mario must whack with his hammer to increase the fireball’s speed. Ends in a rainbow explosion.

Rocket Blast

Summons a rocket that Mario rides into the air, falls onto the enemy with it, then guides back into the enemy again for an explosion.

Cannonball Chuck

Pulls a giant cannonball out of nowhere and swings it around (a la Bowser from 64) and tosses it at the enemy. Luigi would be guiding the ball mid air but it will not have that advantage due to rules.

Battle Cards

A dual deck Mario obtains during his trip to ancient Egypt. By placing these cards on his dual disc they can perform a variety of effects similar to badges in the games prior. Though since some are very specific in how they work (like ones that increase EXP gained or only damage paper enemies) they won’t be listed.

Restores a percentage of health or BP to the user.

Raises the user’s power/defense/speed for a limited time.

Raises damage the bros and enemies deal for a limited time.

Temporarily lowers power / defense / speed of the enemy

Transforms enemies into a Goomba or Mushroom, although it has a chance of failing.

Temporarily heals all damage done to the user.

Hits all enemies one or multiple times with fixed damage.

Nullifies damage a few times when using Emergency Block/

Greatly reduces damage received when using Emergency Block.

Thing Cards

Thing cards are like summons from Final Fantasy, where it pulls the victims and user into an alternate realm where the subject of the card will proceed to attack them.

Fan Card

See the source image
This card pulls the victim into outer space above a copy of the real bonafide Earth. A fan that eclipses the Earth in size proceeds to blow extreme winds onto the enemies and the Earth itself. The sheer power of the wind even causes the Earth to spin so fast it ablates. (That’s science for catch fire via speed)

Lemon Card

See the source image
This one is kind of weird, but makes sense if you really think about it. Basically, a giant sized lemon is cut into multiple pieces and automatically squeezes itself over the enemy. Of course you can imagine that this is extreme torture. Inhuman amounts of lemon juice are being squeezed into your eyes (and any cuts your body may have).

Sonic

Flame Shield

The Flame Shield is a shield that completely protects Sonic from all forms of heat and flames. As an addition to that, it also allows Sonic to perform an aerial dash attack to rocket towards enemies.

Bubble Shield

The Bubble Shield allows Sonic to breathe underwater indefinitely. Along with that, it gives him the ability to bounce off of the ground like a ball.

Thunder Shield

The Thunder Shield gives Sonic protection against electrical based attacks. Along with this ability, he can attract metal objects (usually rings) towards him, and he gains an extra jump with this equipped.

Wisps

Since the 7 year gap between rematches, Sonic has also had his own journey to Space, and there he met (and saved) a friendly alien race known as Wisps, which has been appearing on Sonic’s world ever since as a bunch of them immigrated there because they liked it… though it seems Eggman keeps sticking them in capsules for Sonic to find, so they’re basically powerups now.

White

Adds to Sonic’s overall boost power, allowing him to boost for longer times. Powers Eggman’s robots sometimes

Cyan Laser

Turns Sonic into a Lightspeed laser that bounces across surfaces like that one lightspeed pinball episode of Magic School Bus.

Yellow Drill

Turns Sonic into a living drill that can drill through dirt like a shark or move through water like a bird. Though if it does run out of power underground, Sonic dies.

Blue Cube

Turns blue rings into blue cube platforms and vice versa, and also does a ground pound move that hurts all enemies on screen.

Green Hover

Makes Sonic a little green UFO that flies around. Not much offensive capability and not very fast.

Pink Spikes

Gives Sonic even more spikes than usual, making him a pink glowing ball of spikes that can roll around on walls, ceilings, and the ground. Not as fast as the spindash but gravity doesn’t affect him if he’s touching a surface until the power runs out.

Purple Frenzy

Turns Sonic into a giant thrashing beast that eats everything in his way and grows larger as a result. *Do not insert Deviantart Joke Here* He transforms back to normal once the wisp power runs out, no worse for wear.

Violet Void

Similar to the Purple Frenzy, he turns into a sort of black hole and absorbs everything in his path, growing larger.

Orange Rocket

Fly high and far real quick, though he can only travel in one direction the whole way.

Red Burst

Indigo Asteroid

Similar to the Purple Frenzy and Violet Void, Sonic gains his own gravity and various junk and enemies become his own ring, damaging others and clearing a path for him. The More junk he absorbs, the larger his gravity.

Crimson Eagle

Like the Red Star from Galaxy, it lets Sonic fly around for a limited time and mid air dash.

Magenta Rhythm

Incredibly odd wisp where Sonic bounces around to the rhythm, following a set path.

Ivory Lightning

Charge through enemies and obstacles leaving a trail of chain lightning behind him

Gray Quake

Seems like an odd fusion of Pink Spikes and Blue Cube, with the ability to scale walls and ground pounds.

Black Bomb

Turn into a giant rolling ball that explodes whenever you want or when it runs out of power.

RPG items

Shit from Sonic Chronicles that Sonic uses to restore health and other typical RPG stuff.

Health Plants

Plant products that Sonic smokes to restore his health.

POW Products

Some refreshing products that restore PP.

Antidote & Cure All Spray

Status ailment curing items.

Immunity Booster

A vaccine that greatly increases resistance to status effects for a short period of time.

Bug Spray

A pesticide that weakens insects.

Clover Juice

A magical extract capable of boosting luck temporarily.

Iron Tonic

Medicine that toughens the skin temporarily.

Prune Juice

Juice made with an extract that improves combat skills temporarily.

Psychic Water

A rare concoction capable of providing heightened premonition for a little bit.

Rock Salt

Rare earth extract capable of raising raw strength for a short period of time.

Speed Bar

A sports bar that contains medicine capable of boosting one’s reflexes for a short while.

Equipment

Mario

The Hammer

Mario’s ever present hammer ever since his first fight with Donkey Kong. Large and in charge, it breaks wood and even… living fire spirits with ease. In the Mario and Luigi Series - the traditional hammer gets quite a few variants including:

  • Iron ball Hammer DX: Hammer that occasionally causes an iron ball to fall from the sky
  • Soft Hammer DX: Hammer that lowers the defense of attacking enemies
  • Slap Hammer DX: Hammer that lowers the offensive power of enemies when used on them.
  • Blunt Hammer DX: Hammer that deals 150% damage to spiked enemies
  • Flame Hammer DX: Hammer that can potentially cause a burning effect to opponents
  • Spin Hammer: Hammer that occasionally make opponents dizzy
  • Golden Hammer: A hammer that increases in power based on the coins Mario has.

Spin Drill

The Spin-Drill is a giant Drill that Mario is able to pick up. With it he can drill through the earth with ease. It is more used for exploration than combat but he can use it to attack enemies.

F.L.U.D.D

The FLUDD aka  “Flash Liquidizer Ultra-Dousing Device” that was created by Professor E Gadd and was mostly used in Super Mario Sunshine. It is basically a water backpack that is able to spray water over long distances. It needs water in order to function well and is customizable with different nozzles and attachment that can aid Mario during his adventures on Delfino Island:

Squirt Nozzle: Mario’s main nozzle for FLUDD - it allows Mario to shoot out water from FLUDD’s nozzle. It is mostly used for cleaning up Delfino Island.

Hover Nozzle: This nozzle allows Mario to fire pressurised water below him in order to hover for a short period of time.

Rocket Nozzle: This nozzle allows Mario to send himself upwards into the air like a rocket.

Turbo Nozzle: This nozzle attachment propels Mario forward with water at an extremely fast rate. It also gets him greater jump speed and can be used to maneuver more quickly in the water

Cappy

In Mario’s adventure around the Earth (and moon) to stop Bowser and Peach’s forced marriage, Mario gained a semi-permanent companion in Cappy, an adventure-loving, timid Bonneter who can possess the living shit out of you and anyone you love, forcing them to wear your ridiculous mustache. The exact details on how Cappy works are weird, as with some enemies, Mario can self-inflict damage with no repercussions while others getting damaged can directly hurt the actual Mario as well (though in some cases this is realistically just game mechanics). Also, if the victim is too big (like a T Rex) Cappy can only possess them for a short period of time. He can also possess various non-living objects, and Mario can still fully control the functions of them.

Lazy Shell

A giant shell Mario kicks at enemies.

Blaster

In Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle (Icryeverytiem), Mario’s main weapon in the game are Blasters which are an all around type of gun. Currently there are 25 different Blasters Mario can use in the game and the ones listed will be the most notable (like first one he gets, the strongest of the bunch, yada yada) - you can find a full list of them here

Lighting Shark

The Standard Blaster you get at the opening of the game. It does 25-35 damage at the start of the game and gives no additional effects.

Bwah Blaster

Named after the infernal Rabbids - this blaster deals good damage and is able to to bouche enemies which can be used to send enemies off cliffs.

Honey Blaster

The Honey Blaster deals a good amount of damage but can also be used to apply Honey which renders them unable to move.

Sons of Bwhanarchy

The Sons of Bwhanarchy (named after the TV show Sons of Anarchy) is able to deal an excellent amount of damage and is able to deal honey to an enemy (but it has a much higher chance of doing so then the Honey Blaster).

The Anvil

The Anvil is able to deal an excellent amount of damage and is able to bounce enemies off tall areas and cliffs (it has a higher chance of doing this then the Bwah Blaster)

Flannel Phenom

This is the best Blaster in the game and does excellent amounts of damage and is able to stick Honey to enemies making them unable to move (but this has more chance of happening then even the Sons of Bwahanarchy)

Super Scope

The Super Scope is able to fire small energy blasts at an opponent which don’t do that much damage but it is also able to fire a charged up energy shot that does a lot more damage but requires time to charge.

Armor & Accessories

Super Suit

A FABULOUS suit Mario obtains after performing 100 consecutive Super Jumps. This armor increases Mario’s offense, defense, and speed while also granting him resistance to a variety of status ailments (transmutation, getting muted, poison, sleep, fear) and elemental attacks.

Quartz Charm

A charm Mario forges after stealing Culex’s elemental crystals. Wearing this charm grants increased power and defense, protection from instant death attacks, and increased damage from the Rock Candy and Star Egg.

Clothing

Basically a M&L term for armor. I hope you lads are ready because Mario has a FUCK LOAD of shit from those games, of course we won’t list all of them because why the hell would we make you read all of that?

Overalls

Ironclad Wear: Not the best of armor in terms of raw stats but it has the ability to boost Mario’s defense whenever he takes damage.

King Wear: Sometimes makes Mario’s attacker receive the damage they deal.

Angel Wear: Doubles Mario’s defense when he is low on health.

Golden Wear: Increases Mario defense based on the amount of coins he is carrying. And given a certain bland platformer was all about getting a million coins….that is a loooot of defense.

Gloves

Bye Bye Gloves: Gives Mario’s solo hammer attacks a chance to instantly KO an enemy

Delicious Gloves: Doubles the effects of healing items.

Item Gloves: Enemies hit by Mario’s hammer may randomly drop items or gear.

Mushroom Gloves: Mario occasionally uses a random Mushroom before he acts. In Dream Team the Mushroom Gloves instead make Mario instantly use a healing item whenever his health gets low.

Bottomless Gloves: Quite possibly the most broken set of gloves in Dream Team as they allow Mario to use items without ever consuming them.

Mini Gloves: Quadruple Mario’s power whenever he is Mini.

Rookie / Master Gloves: Returns Mario’s BP / SP / whatever the fuck the game calls it if his rank is Great or less (Rookie Gloves) or Perfect (Master Gloves).

Socks

Gumption Socks: Revives Mario if he gets KO’ed

No Touch Socks: Socks that grant Mario immunity to various status ailments (burned, Defense down, Dizzy, Speed down, Mini, Trip, etc.)

Boots

Daredevil Boots: A risky set of boots that doubles Mario’s power but makes any attack instantly KO him

Dizzy Boots: Gives Mario’s jumps a chance to make the enemy dizzy.

Shroob Boots: Gives Mario’s jumps a chance to half the opponent’s power.

Special Boots: Restores health with jump attacks.

Iron Ball Boots DX: Occasionally drops an iron ball on the enemy.

Anti-air Boots DX: Deals 150% damage to flying enemies.

Star Boots: Restores health whenever Mario deals damage.

Mini Boots: Makes all of Mario’s attacks Lucky Hits when Mini.

Accessories

Guard Shell: Negates damage six times over the course of battle.

DEF/POW Mush Jam: Increase Mario’s defense and power whenever he eats a mushroom.

Giant Shell: Blocks all hits that would deal less than 20% of the wearer’s health in damage.

Lazy Scarf: Triples defense when health is low.

Lucky Charm: Doubles rate of lucky hits.

Tight Belt: Reduces SP cost by half.

Rally Belt: Increases Mario’s power whenever he takes damage.

Mushroom Amulet: Throws away Mushrooms to compensate for damage taken (Bottomless Gloves don’t protect against this).

Angel Bangle: A blessed bangle that restores Mario’s health and BP/SP/whatever.

Badges

Cash-Back Badge: Using items yields coins equal to half the price of the item used.

Risk Badge: The fewer Mushrooms Mario has, the more damage he deals.

Rough Badge: Greatly increases damage dealt and received.

Safety Badge: Greatly decreases damage dealt and received.

Simple Badge: The less Bros Items Mario has, the more damage they deal.

Sonic

Sonic Chronicles Gear

Angel Amulet

A mystical amulet with the inexhaustible power to put the fallen back on their feet (even though it only works once per battle but lol RPGs).

Economizer

A wrist device that reduces the amount of PP needed to perform POW moves.

Elemental Rings

A set ring rings imbued with elemental energy. Equipping them gives Sonic’s normal elemental power.

Immunity Idol

A mystical charm that makes the wearer immune to various status ailments (curses, weakened, sluggish, vulnerable, distracted, poisoned, sleep, stunned).

Kron Hammer

A hammer that makes Sonic’s punches stronger. How? Who knows.

Refresher

A medical kit that recovers one POW point each turn.

Replenisher

A wrist device that is able to regenerate the wearer’s health over time.

Spooky Charm

A charm that induces fear into its foes which causes them to run away more frequently.

Abilities

Mario

Pyrokinesis

See the source image
Granted this by both extended use of Fire Flower exposure and a fire god in the tropics of the BeanBean Kingdom. This runs on Mario’s limited pool of magic but in return allows for more rapid and powerful firing.

Roll

See the source image
Pretty straightforward, Mario can roll, and keep on rolling. If he times each roll right he can gain momentum with each roll.

Ground Pound

See the source image
By observing the Yoshi’s during infancy, Mario and Luigi have learned their infamous ground pound, where a person adds more speed and force to their downfall, by falling ass first.

Mario Cyclone

See the source image
By spinning around at high speeds with his arms sticking out to the side, Mario can jump higher than he normally does and lower his falling speed. This can also double as an offensive ability as anyone caught in it is going to have a hard time getting out until the move is over. It can also triple as a defensive maneuver, as when he uses this technique he can hop on and immediately off of things that would otherwise damage him to do so, like spiked enemies. He’s used many variations throughout history.

Dive

See the source image
Mario can dive forward towards the ground to gain more forward momentum. This can defy physics and be done even in mid-air.

Long Jump

See the source image
By effectively crouching and immediately jumping during running, Mario and jump in a way that, while not high, takes him a very long distance forward.

Color Depletion

See the source image
Though this is an ability known only to the Paper version of Mario, who has been classified as an alternate universe from the normal one, Paper feats and weapons are still being used, so why not abilities too after all?

Anyway, color depletion is a technique where Mario can literally knock the color out of his enemies, causing them to turn into motionless husks. More or less, color depletion is like killing someone without fully completing the job. Pretty messed up.

Hero Abilities/Special Moves

In Mario and Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, Mario has three Hero Abilities that he can do that are exclusive to him. These abilities are:
  • Hero Sight: A skill that allows Mario to automatically fire at a foe during the enemy’s turn if they move within his line of sight.
  • M-Power: This one boosts the attack strength of all allies within range.
  • Stomp Jump: Mario is able to jump on top of an enemy’s head and damage them after a team jump.

Sonic

Spin Dash

The Spin Dash is one of Sonic’s most iconic moves, where he curls up into a ball and rolls quickly, using the spikes on his head to slice and dice up enemies. This move is potent enough to slice through Badniks and harm machines created by Eggman.

Spiral Spin

Spiral Spin is a variant of the Spin Dash in which Sonic spins in circles using the Spin Dash. He can perform feints with this move to catch an enemy by surprise.

Homing Attack

The Homing Attack is a move in which Sonic homes in onto an opponent and slams into them in his iconic ball form.

Super Peel Out

The Super Peel Out is a move in which Sonic winds up his legs in a figure-8 fashion before dashing off at super speeds.

Light Speed Dash

The Light Speed Dash is a technique where Sonic moves in seemingly an instant, usually done across lines of rings. This move is, as the name implies, often described as lightspeed.

Drop Dash

The Drop Dash is a technique in which Sonic curls up into a ball while in the air, before landing on the ground for an immediate dash forward.

Blue Tornado

The Blue Tornado is a move in which Sonic spins around the opponent, moving fast enough to create a tornado. This can be used to disorient or throw opponents off, or to affect the area around him with wind. In the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon, Sonic uses a move called the Sonic Tornado that is functionally the exact same.

Sonic Wind

The Sonic Wind is a move Sonic preforms in which he sends a gust of wind towards the enemy to attack. This seems to be of use from any range, but also seems to require the use of rings.

Other Moves

Rush Spin is a combo move in which Sonic punches 4 times before using his spin dash to slide under the opponent and knock them up into the air.

Punch-Spin is a technique in which Sonic punches the opponent before spinning around them before they can react. Can punch twice for the Twin Punch-Spin.

Spin Rocket is an attack where Sonic bounces off a wall and slams into the opponent with his ball form.

Head Spin is a grapple-esque attack where Sonic curls into a ball onto the opponent’s head before knocking them backwards.

Weapon Grab is a straightforward attack, really. Using a weapon from the opponent against them.

Dizzy Spin is an attack where Sonic spins around the opponent to make them dizzy.

Super Sonic

With the seven Chaos Emeralds at his side, Sonic can use their incredible power to transform into Super Sonic. In this form, Sonic is nearly invulnerable, gains a 1000% power increase, gains the ability to fly. And after it’s time limit runs out, Sonic returns back into his base form’s peak physical condition.

Weaknesses

Mario

Mario has little in the way of very obvious exploitable weaknesses, owing to his very well-rounded powerset. However, he isn’t exactly invincible. Most of his powers are tied into his pickups, which all run on certain limitations, like being discarded if he were to take damage or otherwise running on time limits.

Sonic

With the title of being the fastest thing alive, Sonic has developed a rather cocky and laidback attitude, and won’t always take a fight super seriously if he doesn’t think he has to, only kicking things into high gear for Final Boss material. This can leave him vulnerable to underestimating his opponent if he gets too comfortable with his competition. And with that title of being the fastest thing alive, he hates to see anyone try and beat him at his own game, making him reckless in a fight if he sees his opponent starting to rip off his style. Super Sonic has a time limit, but the exact limit is inconsistent. In some cases, he needs rings to maintain the form. In other cases, he can maintain it for extended periods of time with no rings needed. And finally, he’s got some serious aquaphobia and tends to keep as far away from water as he can due to his inability to swim.

Summary

Mario

Advantages:

  • Statstomps Sonic in base form
  • Faster than both forms of Sonic exponentially
  • More technical experience (has fought Bowser since he could make baby steps)
  • Has a lot more power-ups and items to pull out for an extended period of time
  • Much more items that can boost his stats up in better ratios
  • Can resist most of Sonic’s haxes
  • Arsenal can outlast Sonic’s
  • Can harm intangible beings
  • Can stockpile a hundred of every power up potentially
  • More healing options
  • Self revival method provides more health
  • Has a larger and more effective hax-based arsenal
  • Immune against many status ailments with No-Touch Socks and Super Suit
  • Items Glove can potentially knock away any gear Sonic has in his possession
  • Plunder Chest can take any item Sonic has and give it to Mario
  • Can use all power-ups indefinitely thanks to the Bottomless Gloves
  • Cappy can act on his own, and potentially force Mario into possessing something if he feels he’s in a bind
  • Can possess non living things and still control them (likely even Sonic’s weapons or items)
  • Blunt Hammer is going to add 50% damage to all hits against Sonic because he has quills
  • Has vampiric abilities thanks to Star Boots
  • Can clone himself by the hundreds virtually as much as he wants through two different items
  • Can summon many creatures, including Yoshi, to his aid, who has so much shit on his own that it would require its own blog
  • Is going to constantly be getting stronger through the course of battle, as whenever he uses an item he’s going to gain money which makes him stronger thanks to Cash-Back Badge, and thanks to the Bottomless Gloves he can use these with no limit. Also any damage he takes is going to make him stronger thanks to the Rally Belt. This continues even further as if he goes mini, all his attacks will be quadrupled in damage thanks to the Mini Gloves, and all his attacks will be critical if he wears the Mini Boots
  • Due to all the aforementioned stat boosts and damage boosts, can potentially close off the strength gap between him and Super Sonic
  • Better dancer (Entirety of DDR)
  • Also knows how to roll in a ball
  • Has nipples

Disadvantages:

  • Weaker than Super Sonic
  • Less general techniques
  • One of his most common powers (fire) can possibly be nullified by the flame shield
  • Most of his haxes can be resisted
  • His music isn’t made by Crush 40
  • SEGA does what Nintendon’t
  • Don’t play Super Mario 3D World with friends for more than couple hours

Sonic

Advantages:

  • Stronger in Super form
  • Can resist most of Mario’s haxes
  • Shields can make him virtually intangible to fire or electricity
  • Has more general techniques
  • Intangibility hax is more straightforward and easily usable than Mario’s
  • Can add fire, water, wind, ice, or electricity to all his standard attacks
  • Immunity idol can protect Sonic from various status effects
  • Wisps can act on their own to attack
  • Also knows how to jump
  • Twitter game is infinitely more godlike to the point that he basically wins the moral victory regardless of whatever happens. (This will not be contested.)
  • Series has spawned some of the best memes in existence & Knuckles

Disadvantages:

Verdicts

Grand Blazer

It is a fucking crime that we didn’t use His World anywhere in this blog yet, so enjoy the six variants of it I have just hyperlinked.

And yes the joke here is that that Sonic lives in a society. The initial theme of the avatars for this match was gonna be whatever images we found googling “[name] the hedgehog”, but I’m gonna throw these guys under the bus and say that they just didn’t do it. Ruin a kid’s dream, they will. So instead I’m just going with Epic Gamer the Hedgehog even though the meme will be outdated soon enough, probably.

Anyways. Guess we’re back to this matchup, eh? How about that. Mario VS Sonic was the first Death Battle I ever watched after years of trying to find pretty much every video I could for the matchup. And by that I of course mean the olden days of the mid to late-2000s spent exploring the wild west of online video animations known as Newgrounds. That was waaay back in season one when the most recent episode at the time was Thor VS Raiden. Never guessed in those early teen years of mine that this far down the line I’d have come full circle and wind up this deep into the fandom writing a verdict for a decently popular blog on that same match that got me stuck in this world. Funny the places life will take you, isn’t it?

Oh and full disclosure, and I’ll take all the shit taste comments I know are coming, but I want Sonic to win this really badly, primarily because from my point of view this is like the last thing he has going over Mario. Within my lifetime I’ve seen one of the biggest pieces of my childhood lose the console wars entirely and get thrown into being a third-party game for other consoles (even Nintendo’s), he’s losing in games a lot too (last year’s Odyssey VS Forces in particular stung a lot, even with Mania around), Sega sells him off to basically anything, the IDW Comics are good but still kind of a sad reminder of what we used to have before that bastard you-know-who went to town, Sonic Boom Season 3 is nowhere in sight despite being a pretty successful and very well-received cartoon, his movie probably isn’t gonna do too well (and I say that as someone who’s genuinely excited for it) which will result in his rep getting dragged down even further for a bit more mainstream of an audience, and he’s just the laughing stock of the gaming community. So yeah, it kiiiind of feels like winning in a fight is the last (and ultimately a lot smaller) thing he has left over Mario, so I really hope he can keep a hold on to that fact. Do I think the hedgehog can defend his crown?

Yes. I do.

...But I’m probably just in denial.

Whether it’s due to ignorance or that I prooobably purposefully avoid it because I hear it’s a bitchfest, I generally have a lot more solid of a grasp on Sonic’s feats than Mario’s, and what I do and don’t accept tends to be more concrete for the hedgehog than the plumber. So I’m not exactly the best guy to ask how they compare on that front. I keep to the city level Sonic and planet Super Sonic, and then I guess Mario is either city or solar system level? So he’s either gonna complete destroy Sonic, or Super Sonic is gonna be ripping him apart again.

But I’m not really gonna bother debating those feats myself, because I think even if Mario was only city level, he just has way too much other shit on the go for Sonic to win. And I don’t mean in that “ded b4 soup” way that I really don’t like, but Sonic really can’t compete with Mario on their base levels. Sure DC may be the same, but then speed is an issue, which actually makes me kind of sad to say. Cuz you either think Mario has waaaaaaaaay more of it even compared to Super Sonic, so he could probably still manage to outlast the time limit based with his crazy arsenal, or or you think Sonic is probably just barely inching past him, but then Mario again just has more than enough in those deep pockets of his to change the tide of battle in his favour.

Seriously, have you been reading this stuff? Self-revival, healing options out the ass, every element you can think of for an attack, possession, status immunity, status infliction, item theft, cloning, constantly increasing his stats, invisibility, invincibility, size manipulation, flight, and who knows what else I’m forgetting. Sonic’s options of shields, Wisps and misc. RPG items - many of which are either obsolete due to other powers or are just game mechanic things that we won’t be seeing in this context - just can’t compete with all of that.

Now maybe if you give every benefit of a doubt that Super Sonic is MFTL and universal and the time limit isn’t limited to a single minute and maybe if you take out every single high end Mario feat, he has a shot. But the likelihood of that happening just strikes me as really low.

So I guess I need a pun to finish this off…? I dunno. Mario is gonna kick Sonic into the Green Hills and I’ll probably be a little bummed out about it.

ramonzer0

Just want to get this out there: on whatever anti-honor I have as someone who mains every third-party character in Smash (as of this writing and it might be subject to change - will still tell Minecraft Man to politely piss off if he does get in) and Shulk (play the first Xenoblade, you cowards), I hope Mr. Needlemouse wins again. Yes, throw those same “shit taste” comments my way too, but I’m in more or less the same boat as GB. Hell, I don’t even like Sonic that much in comparison to a bunch of other video game characters I can name off the top of my head, but at his best I still think he’s still a lot cooler than Mario is, personal attachment to the characters and all.

Honestly though, having the announcement made sorta took me back a bit. I didn’t know Death Battle was a thing when the first match dropped and wouldn’t hear about the show until some 2 years later, which then kick-started my journey down the rabbit hole of VS debating; side warning: if you value your life, do not follow us down here...  please still read our stuff though and send us presents. We secretly crave love, attention and other possible sources of revenue. (I’ll take plane tickets to Japan and a seat at the Tokyo Dome for January 4 every year please.)

Now back to the main issue - is DB going to give Mario the biggest (and if the fanbase is to be believed, the saltiest) runback they could possibly do and hand him a win lots of my colleagues believe that he should’ve had 7 years ago? As much as I hate to admit it, it’s looking like a possibility. My biases aside, this is a hard match to call, mainly due to their feats and how exactly both of their powers, stats and hax are going to play off each other. Most of it is based off interpretations that are going to wildly vary depending on who you ask, and what’s even harder about this go-around is that the more restricted scope of information the show is pulling from means that we can’t fall back on looking at how older Mario and Sonic fights were done.

For ease of understanding to folks who still have the 2011 fight fresh in their minds, I’ll be using the three main talking points behind the original verdict as a way to frame my own for this one. This isn’t going to be as in-depth as the others on this list, so I’ll have to redirect you to my companions here if you’re looking for something of that flavor. With that out of the way, let’s begin with:

A. Do their power-ups counter each other?

I mean this more in a general sense, but barring a specific few items of note, pickups aren’t going to do much here. We’ll get into stats later, but for now, let’s work under the assumption that both of them are equalized for the time being.

The reason why I’m going about this sorta boils down to how much they can likely counter whatever the other side has, and it can vary. On the basic level, it’d be easy to give them their many healing options, both have ways of defending against elemental attacks and different RPG-style status effects so those won’t be issues in terms of having to protect themselves from harm and most of their lower-to-mid tier power-ups aren’t exactly going to catch the other off-guard or anything like that. Chalk that up to experience.

I don’t see any of their higher-end power-ups making a difference either. Mario could toss Cappy to possess Sonic and make him commit suicide that way, but the latter’s resistance to Dark Gaia could throw a wrench in those plans. The Wisps are versatile, but barring stuff like turning into a black hole, nothing they do shouldn’t really faze Mario either. Mario’s time stop with his watch and Sonic’s Chaos Control could theoretically counter each other, but they’re both mainly one-off techniques or items that don’t really play a recurring role in either’s adventures.

The biggest drawback I see when it comes down to discussing their power-ups is that they’re all limited by quantity or time, and as neither of them really have anything truly game-breaking and not overly reliant on game mechanics like their abilities to come back from the dead, I’m of the opinion that this fight has to be settled with stats, plain and simple.

B. Is Sonic really faster than Mario?

For further context, lemme say outright that if Sonic doesn’t get the Chaos Emeralds for any reason whatsoever, Mario will eat him alive. It’d be stomp-level territory. Let me leave a possible reaction image for the one you might have upon reading that some fucko on the internet thinks that Mario is faster than Sonic the Hedgehog.

Anyway, to elaborate: I’ve said above that this fight is interpretation-heavy and whoever has better high-end feats is going to depend on who you’re talking to. That doesn’t apply in the scenario Sonic doesn’t get to become a Super Saiyan, which is his biggest saving grace. Mario simply has him beat in most of the stat trinity, and even if you could concoct an argument that says that Sonic could still be faster, most of it would have to deal with movement and running speed, which is countered by the fact that Mario’s reflexes and reactions have dealt with things faster than Sonic. No amount of power-ups or more varied techniques can save him from a dude who can punt castles like footballs, and that’s being a bit conservative with Mario’s power.

When the Chaos Emeralds come into play though, this is where things get a bit dicier because of those aforementioned interpretations. Mario will definitely have to work a lot harder for a win when Super Sonic’s active, but trying to compare who is supposed to outstat the other will be tricky to explain. It boils down to what you’re personally willing to accept between either of their major feats: Mario’s reliant on showings from Galaxy, Odyssey and Party whereas Sonic would have to fall back on most of his 3D-era stuff like the Adventure duology, the 2006 game, Generations, etc. There’s multiple outcomes for this depending on your level of tolerance, and this mainly impacts Sonic: if you’re willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on these cases, then he’s more likely to outstat Mario and take the win from there.

For the sake of context, here goes: Mario should hover around Solar System level thanks to a multitude of Galaxy feats involving black holes and what not, while Sonic by himself is way below that at around Multi-Continental at best. Sonic’s multiple laser-dodging feats can bring up to moving at FTL speeds, but Mario’s reactions to stuff like Bowser attacking the Starship Mario actually beat them out; again, it’s likely that Sonic could still move faster, but Mario’s reaction speeds should trump that. When Sonic goes Super, he could go all the way up to Universal if you consider his defeat of Solaris in Sonic ‘06, but those who oppose it can likely top him off at Star level. Speed becomes a lot closer since by then, he’ll have enough to match Mario’s own.

I’m going out on a limb here and give Super Sonic the benefit of the doubt here by saying he should outstat Mario based on the other threats he’s beaten, but the latter does have one out from this: if Super Sonic’s time limit ran out, then Sonic says goodbye to the stat advantage and becomes a walking target, even if reverting back to base fully heals him. This is where we get into the last claim DB previously made:

C. Can Mario outlast Super Sonic’s time limit?

...and therein lies the kicker.

The 2011 episode made the claim that a mix of Mario’s highest-end power-ups at the time could prevent Super Sonic from landing a fatal hit and up to the point where the form would run out and lead him to an easy win. That’s probably not going to happen.

Taking aside the claim of “Mario can easily kill Sonic before the Chaos Emeralds come into play!”, Super Sonic’s time limits are never really consistently shown to be too long or short. Shows like Sonic X at least depict him able to hold it for 10+ minutes, which should be longer than the time limits held by most of Mario’s other major trump cards like Starman. He can certainly fight on par with Super Sonic for a bit, but ultimately I see him falling before Sonic is forced to revert back to base.

D. What can we do? When will this crime wave end? How will we defeat the EVIL? Why am I asking you all these questions?

...because I needed to make a Spongebob reference here. Duh. Oh, and if you want to try and defeat the EVIL, then good luck.

For context, this is a Japanese pro wrestler literally named EVIL. Everybody calls him the “King of Darkness.” He walks to the ring dressed as the Grim Reaper. His finishing move is called EVIL. That above is his catchphrase. Everything I’ve described is all just surface level stuff; he is one of the living embodiments of edge that exists in this world right now. It’s absolutely brilliant. You cannot truly defeat the EVIL. Because everything is EVIL.

Watch puroresu. Oh, and…

E. Is Sonic still going to beat Mario?

Least I’m prepared to eat as much crow and shit for this given the circumstances, but yeah: I’m going with Sonic on this with all of (whatever the opposite of confidence is) in the world.

Anyway, to get a few things out of the way: stuff like training and experience shouldn’t matter here given how long both Mario and Sonic have been around defeating opponents from almost every part of the spectrum and have thus mastered the ancient martial art of “hit the other guy in their obvious weak spot over and over again.” Their power-ups should mostly counter each other, but by and large, this comes down to an advantage on stats which I feel should probably go to Sonic via Super form shenanigans that Mario just can’t fully work around.

This isn’t a decision I’m making with full rationality, I’ll admit that much. Most commonly accepted verdicts often go with a Mario victory with some combination of either being very lenient of his feats and equipment while critiquing Sonic’s own, which puts me in the minority that thinks the hedgehog should take this. I can’t shake the feeling that Mario could come out of this with the win, especially since a lot of my colleagues here seem to be going for him, but eh -- I’ve decided that I’m going with my gut and heart over whatever’s left of my brain here.

Also, I don’t really have much in terms of witty endings here so enjoy outdated memes:

Malcolm Belmont

Oh boy oh boy i can’t wait for for Episode 100 - Mickey vs Bugs is going to be sweet with all their different powers and history i can’t wait for this fight

“Sees that it’s Mario vs Sonic Remake”

So yeah i was a fair bit salty when it was announced that the next fight would be Mario vs Sonic 2. Here is the thing - Mario vs Sonic 2 is not a bad idea - i would have been completely fine if it wasn’t Episode 100 but sadly it is - honestly i think this fight is pretty underwhelming for an 100th Episode and i am not sure if i entirely like the fact that it’s going to be hand drawn (honestly Sprites,3D Models would have fit better) but since this fight is happening - i might as well give my thoughts and opinions on this fight.

I am not going to go really into the stats part of this matchup because there are other verdicts that are done a way better job than i at covering that topic so i thought to respond to certain question and queries people have about this matchup as well as give my final thoughts at the very end

Question 1 - Are there ways of Mario countering Sonic’s Speed?

Oh absolutely, even disregarding the fact that based on stats - Mario should be faster than Sonic - Mario has multiple ways of countering/stopping Sonic in his Tracks..in fact

2 Ways Mario can stop Sonic’s Speed

Number 5:

Honey Blaster/Any Blaster that inflicts Honey from Mario and Rabbids: Kingdom Battle

Yes there is no reason why weapons from Mario and Rabbids shouldn’t be included. The reason why i am putting any Honey Blasters on this list is for a very simple reason and that being because of the Honey effect - now i know what you may be asking. What does the Honey Effect do? Well when Honey is applied to an enemy target then it makes them impossible to move as it coats them in Honey which means Honey will absolutely stop Sonic in his tracks as it will render him unable to move.

Ice Flower/Penguin Suit
Ice is very good at taking out Speedsters - i mean look at Captain Cold and the same principle should apply hill, The Ice Flower and the Penguin Suit give Mario Cyrokinetic Abilities which will freeze Sonic in his tracks thus making him unable to move.

Honey and Freeze are easily the best two ways i can see Mario stopping Sonic from attacking him through speedy attacks (though Mario should be faster). These weapons/powerups are easily enough to stop Sonic from any speedy antics.

Can Mario survive and outlast Super Sonic?

Yes, don’t get me wrong - Super Sonic is easily one of Sonic’s biggest helpers in this fight as it gives him a significant power increase and effectively make him completely invincible- it does not last forever as it has a time-limit and will eventually run out so the question remains - does Mario have ways in order to last Super - Powerstar

Not only does it give Mario increased Speed and Strength but it also makes him completely invincible meaning that Mario can use the Power Star in order to be completely unaffected by Super Sonic’s attacks basically making this fight a stalemate until one runs out - even if Mario runs out of Power Stars of use - his durability should be more than enough to survive Super Sonic’s barrage. He also has other power-ups that could be more than helpful against the ever powerful Super Sonic - such as:

Ghost Mario
Ghost Mushroom allows him to become completely intangible and invisible of attacks - however it’s main weaknesses is sun-light meaning Mario can’t really use this when he is out in the sun but he has another powerup that makes him intangible - that being the

Vanish Cap
The Vanish Cap has the same effect as the Ghost Mushroom in terms of that it makes him completely intangible making it difficult for Sonic to hit him.

So yeah not only does Mario have the durability - making it difficult for Super Sonic to get any real damage on Mario but he also has several items that will counter/negate Super Sonic’s attacks and all Mario has to do is wait for Super Sonic to wait out - since Mario has the much superior stats to Sonic in base. So yeah Mario can survive the power of Super Sonic

Which Character Has the Superior Power Ups?

“Looks at the Massive List of Mario’s Powers when compared to Sonic’s”. Welp Mario wins. In all seriousness - Mario does easily have the edge in terms of power-ups (with the expect of Super Sonic which is honestly Sonic’s best bet). While Sonic does have some useful powerups in terms of the Wisps and the Shields - they are nothing when compared to Mario’s vast aresensel. We have powers such as the Power Star which make him completely invincible to attacks as well as increase his speed and strength, the Double Cherry which allows him to create clones of himself, The Cat Bell which makes him into every furry’s wet dream as well as many many more and a lot of these power ups such as the Starman and the Vanish Cap counter a lot of Sonic’s best abilities (and that’s not even going into the RPG Games which would even more tip the favor into Mario’s Power). Super Sonic may be Sonic’s ace in the hole but besides that - i feel Mario definitely has the edge in terms of Power-Ups.

Thoughts on the Fight:

Ultimately this comes down to stats and i believe that Mario definitely has the edge in that category though i will freely admit - this fight is a lot closer when considering Super Sonic. If Sonic had Super Sonic and could use it without the time limit then i could see this fight being extremely close - however due to the fact that it does have a time limit - the question remains - will Mario be able to survive/outlast sonic which i have demonstrated is a clear and concise yes. Mario has the durability edge as well as several power-ups to outlast Super Sonic as well as numerous ways of getting around Sonic’s Speeding Fighting Style with his Honey Gun and his Ice Powers - ultimately this will come down to a 1 on 1 fight with no Super Sonic as Mario will simply outlast it and in this area Mario remains king as a lot of his power-ups are very well suited to beating Sonic and he simply has the Strength edge and is more durable than Sonic and Mario has several power-ups that could end this fight clearly and concisely. So overall Mario’s Power-ups,Superior Strength,Destructive Capability,Speed,Better Powerups and having ways of Countering Sonic’s best attributes give Mario the definite win in my eyes. Looks like Mario will be the superior platformer icon in this fight.

So...if we end up getting another fight animated by BlindFerret..can it be

Anyone who knows me what stock I have in this fight. I love Mario (and Sonic, just Mario moreso). I’ve grown up with both and care about them on an unhealthy level, like they’re real. It’s why I’ve tried distancing myself from shows like this which kind of end up preying on my obsessive tendencies. Nevertheless I still brought myself back in by choice because I felt if I didn’t then not enough people would be in here saying the right things about Mario as a series.

With that being said, Mario has this in the bag.

For starters, there’s literally nothing holding Mario back from flicking Sonic into red paste before he could ever think to go Super. This is the same argument that gave Mewtwo a win so I don’t see why Mario has to sit back long enough for Sonic to somehow figure out his enemy is going to kill him in one hit. It doesn’t help that Mario is far faster than the Blue Blur himself could even react.

For the sake of comparison, a fully composited Mario is multi galaxy+ and quadrillions of times faster than light, since he now scales to Rosalina, who can tank and block the big bang multiple times and steer her Comet Observatory across the universe in a short timespan. A fully composited Sonic is multi continent in base with scaling to the final boss of, and at least 8 times FTL via running around the world multiple times in Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.

But sure, let’s give Sonic all benefit of the doubt and say he does somehow get to go Super. What then? Well, Super Sonic is definitely a large step up and will definitely help. Composite Super Sonic could be considered universal due to fighting the final boss of Sonic Rush Adventure who was going to merge Sonic and Blaze’s dimensions together, as well as Solaris who was going to consume all timelines one by one.

Thing is however, I don't agree with this. Solaris was only consuming timelines indirectly by consuming time, which is a hax that isn't applied to regular destructive capacity. Also, the Jeweled Scepter wasn't being used by Egg Wizard to merge the multiverse. It was a byproduct of using the Jeweled Scepter to steal the Power of the Stars, which set off the equilibrium between the two universes, causing one of have a magnetic attraction to the other.

So assuming those don't work out, Super Sonic is large planet level, which is still a very long way from Mario’s multi galaxy+ level. Assuming you still did believe these feats for whatever reason, Super Sonic is still only about one step higher on the tier ladder than Mario, while Mario still remains billions of times faster than even Super Sonic.

This isn’t even accounting for the fact that Mario has multiple stat multipliers/boosters that could boost his strength up to Super Sonic’s level. He can quadruple his strength by shrinking, get stronger with every item or damage he takes, use any power up indefinitely with the Bottomless Gloves, get stronger the more coins he has (and Mario can carry ten million on hand), and even has a hammer that deals 150% damage on spiked enemies with the Blunt Hammer.

I literally cannot see a single scenario where Mario doesn’t win.

On the bright side, Sonic will probably always have the better soundtracks, but Mario is the Superstar in this Death Battle.

The Black Shulk

Well here we are. Episode 100 is the expected but unwanted Mehraio vs Sanquick 2: Electric Boogaloo. Honestly I feel like I’d be more optimistic about the fight if it was a proper sprite fight rather than flash animated since people like Jetz could really do this fight justice. Guess that leaves Goku vs whoever because I doubt Saitama is fighting him, Rouge SQUAD UP against Star Fox, and Spidey vs Bats milky milky edition (please no but also yes for all the lewds).

Oh yeah the fight.

Anyhow to keep it straight (and for those who don’t want to read all this shite below) Mario should take this more often than naught due to the massive stat disparity between him and Sonic. He has a much wider arsenal in terms of equipment and powers, some of which more or less break the fight and make Sonic’s struggle even more difficult of a hill to climb. Even in the more mundane factors like experience and intellect I’d argue Mario has the upper hand in both regards.

K so if you’re reading this you probably want a more in depth verdict.Prepare your anus because it's going to be a doozy.

To kick things off Mario’s stats at the bare minimum should be Multi-Solar System level via black hole feat from SMG2, Power Stars in Mario Party 4 wiping out all the stars in the sky and recreating them, and various other star to solar system feats like Raphel the Raven, Power Stars making realms with stars in them in SM64, etc. You can argue higher for Mario with things such as Rosalina scaling via 3D World, Paper Mario surviving the destruction of Sammer’s Kingdom to which Mario is equal to his paper counterpart thanks to Paper Jam, and the Grand Stars arguably being the key to keeping Bowser’s galaxy from exploding and destroying the universe. Sonic meanwhile in base at the bare minimum get MCB via hill smashing in Sonic CD+Chaos city flood. You can argue he gets Multi-Continent assuming you accept the bio-energy feat from Lost World. Attack Potency gap is pretty bad already but the speed gap is arguably even worse. Bare minimum Mario should be billions FTL thanks to him sticking the landing of the galaxy flight in SMG2. I’d argue he should be higher considering he can keep pace with Bowser’s ships post SMG1 which moved in tandem with Rosa’s Comet Observatory (said Observatory flew to the center of the universe in a couple of seconds making it quadrillions ftl). Sonic’s bare minimum is Hypersonic thanks to Metal Sonic’s flight in Sonic 4 Episode 2 getting Mach 30. The feat could possibly be higher and there are other feats going for quad mach base Sonic. At the highest there are cases for FTL. Regardless the gap is massive between the two in attack potency and speed (durability is more or less the same as AP). Realistically Mario would one shot Sonic before super forms are even considered.

Super Sonic is going to be factored into this fight regardless so touching on that is required. I personally disagree with the feats that seemingly make Super Sonic Universal. Time Eater eating time (and space I think?) doesn’t equal to timeline destruction as a whole, Solaris eating timelines appears far more of an overtime feat considering Sonic’s world was still in tact long enough for the gang to gather the emeralds and stop Solaris (mind you this was right after Solaris awoke and fucked the entire planet up with a timey whimey blast), and Egg Wizard is never implied to use the full power of the Power of the Stars considering the dialogue never mentions the universes coming together (which would occur if the Power of the Stars was fully absorbed considering its role as a barrier) and its most powerful attack being a planet buster. Super Sonic should be planet at the very least imo, which lines up with numerous feats such as the moon busting cannon in SA2, the Egg Wizard’s aforementioned planet busting attack, and Dark Gaia in Unleashed. Even if we were to give Sonic the Universal stats I’d still say he doesn’t have the means to beat Mario. Giving Mario his Universal stats just makes the fight a stalemate in AP and Dura, to which Mario still speed blitzes him into oblivion. If you don’t give Mario the universal stats, pure speed will allow him to avoid Super Sonic’s attacks, long enough for Super Sonic to run out and allow Mario to land the finishing blow.

In terms of equipment and abilities Mario has a muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuch more to work with compared to Sonic. Beyond the basic line of main series powerups he has Mario can pull from all sorts of material that give him much more variety in powers. The M&L games especially give him shitloads of ways to amp and boost his abilities such as doubling the effect of healing items, regenerative health through attacks, increasing defense through how many coins he has, or being able to drop enemy items while fighting. The two most notable ones are the Retry Clock and Bottomless Gloves. Retry Clock essentially allows Mario to restart an entire battle over again with seemingly the same amount of knowledge from the defeat. If Sonic were to KO Mario in some fashion, Retry Clock essentially starts everything back to square one, with Mario now knowing of the Chaos Emeralds and being able to stop him from transforming. It can be argued that this is purely gameplay though so it's not unreasonable as to why this wouldn’t be accepted. Bottomless Gloves however are arguably a bigger game breaker, as they basically allow Mario to have an infinite supply of power ups to his liking. Any of the more broken powers he can continuously use without any repercussions.

Lastly if we want to touch on mundane stuff like experience or intellect I’d say the plumber still has a decent advantage.Intellect is not a big ap considering both have proven to be proven quite cunning in their various adventures. Experience would be the more greater of the two gap wise, as Mario has been adventuring since he was a baby, has participated in a variety of sports both in adult and baby (guess I should throw in Mario is immune to whole spatial time fuckery shit considering anything that happens to his past self straight up doesn’t affect him) and has fought a variety of enemies with a bigger range of abilities and powers compared to the enemies Sonic tends to face.

To wrap this up, Mario absolutely stomps Sonic in his base form and would realistically end the fight before super forms are even a factor. On the off brand chance Sonic gets access to his super forms, Mario in my eyes would still have the stat advantage to beat Super Sonic. Even if Sonic gets the Universal stuff, he still cannot touch Mario, nor harm him to a great degree if he gets his respective universal stats. Mario’s arsenal is far larger and contains more broken abilities to work with, most notably the Bottomless Gloves which give him an infinite supply of power ups to wallop on Sonic. Lastly, his experience outclasses Sonic’s thanks to being exposed to various types of enemies as a baby, and having a much more diverse lineup of opponents to combat against in the series as a whole.

In the end, plumber boy Mario would be my go to pick for this DB.

Oh and be sure to play Spiderman PS4.

Call Me Knuckles

100 episodes and it’s all lead to this. This match has got a lot of history with me. When I first discovered DB as a young tadpole, a lot of episodes struck a bit of a chord with me, but none like the OG Mario VS Sonic. I’ve always been a really big Mario fan ever since I was really really young, but I don’t actually have that big a history with Sonic. I got pretty bummed seeing Mario
get his face spun off, but I accepted that it was the right outcome.

Now I’m not a naive child anymore, and I can say with full confidence that Sonic ain’t winning this. Well, he shouldn’t, anyway.

I’m gonna go through this fairly fast because I know other people are probably gonna go into a lot more detail and I’m a lazy sob and a bad debater and yadda yadda. Sonic has a pretty sizeable arsenal, but it’s nothing compared to the expansive repertoire that the plumber has gathered over the years, and none of Sonic’s abilities should really be able to counter many of Mario’s more diverse abilities. Mario also has a crazy large boost in stats (yes even speed) - well, at first. You have to take into consideration Super Sonic too, and that tightens the verdict a fair bit. But is it enough to give Sonic the win? Not really, considering Super Sonic’s time limit. Mario really just has to outlast Super Sonic long enough for the Chaos Emeralds’ power to run out - which, considering he’s survived black holes and is comparable to Rosalina durability-wise, shouldn’t be too impossible for old Mari to do. Hell, he doesn’t even have to outlast Sonic at all. All he really has to do is defeat Sonic before even the emeralds come into play, which shouldn’t be too much of a challenge considering the huge gap in stats between Mario and Sonic in his base form.

So, uh.. yeah, that’s pretty much all there is to it. The Blue Blur might be quick on his feet, but he can’t run from his fate, and I think that’s a pretty good moral for this edition of the G1 Death Battle Blog. So tldr Bubsy beats both of them ez.

Unserious Sam

(Aw yeah. This is Happenin’”.)

First and foremost.
I wanna slap this meme that I stole here before someone takes it.

There we go.
My other childhood dream match can wait.

Anyway, bobbady boop, we got a big ass matchup to look at. That’s pretty nice. I’d normally go about some tangent about what character I like more and what not, but that adds nothing and is just a way to make yourself not biased. Anyway, let’s do this shit, because I’m ready.
(Well, not before thanking the people who allowed me on the blog to do this in the first place. Thanks guys!)

Mario
Alrighty, AP is pretty easy ATM. Normally Mario is attributed for stuff like breaking bricks, tossing Bowser, etc. However, we got stuff way beyond that.

Mario punting a castle goes to City level (because the castles aren’t fully captured in SNES glory and are way bigger on the inside), Dark Bowser creating a storm across the Mushroom Kingdom gets to Island level (Mario > Bowser > Dark Bowser, plus Mario and Luigi fought the Dark Fawful virus, and after beating it Dark Bowser lost a lot of his power), Yoshi and Mario as a literal infant can endure the destruction of a Castle visible from the world map alongside mountains, as well as being launched to the moon, can compare to Donkey Kong’s Country (hue) level feat, and Wario tanking the Dispersion of clouds after defeating the Shake King (Moon level). Oh also, Bowser and some minions take this City Block level explosion. I only bring this up because I'll get to these minions later.

But anyway, there’s more!

The first big feat here is from Yoshi’s Island here, where Yoshi beats up Raphael the Raven. Upon his defeat, Raphael takes flight across the sky, eventually turning into a constellation in the back. So yeah, Big Raven boi becoming a star is definitely good to note (and the flight itself is 47 Million times the speed of light BTW, but we’ll get there). Now, I’d like to point out how this was because of Kamek’s magic more than likely, but if a casual backfire upon defeat is the result of this, it should honestly scale regardless (he literally amps both himself and Bowser with this magic, so not much room for arguing there unless you wanna assume he cares about this fodder more than he does himself or Bowser). This is Star level, as one would guess, possibly higher but I’m not sure if how much higher it can be quantified.

Power Stars can turn into Black Holes as seen here (Large Star level) and create massive shines that can be seen from galaxies away it seems (also Large Star level). The stars from Mario Party 4 also turn into constellations. The former two apply because Bowser amps himself up with powers way above that, and the latter is more something worth noting (as it’s a power source they gather throughout the game to give the player a birthday present….alrighty then)

Now, Bowser, who Mario definitely compares to (Mario can hurt Bowser even when amped up by stuff, Yoshi and Baby Mario defeat Bowser after he goes back in time to kill Mario as a baby, etc.)  Bowser, being the tank he is, has a bunch of big feats too. He is able to resist the pull of this vortex, which as you can tell in the background is sucking in a bunch of space stuff in the back (the calc for this got Large Planet). And the big feat, Bowser endures this black hole. (Solar System level). Mario beats Bowser both amped and unamped, Bowser does survive the black hole as shown in the game’s credits, and the dialogue heavily implies that the power of the Grand Star was draining from him before and/or during this feat so he probably endured this while weakened. No arguments here. Also, Mario survives another black hole in one of the Mario Party games, which also got about Large Star.

Now, this is consistent Solar System stuff that’s pretty clear for Mario….but, I honestly think we can go further beyond.

People are probably bringing it up before and after, so I’ll just say it. I think Mario should be Multi-Galaxy to Universal+. I believe this because of two characters.
Rosalina
And Paper Mario
Let’s get this out of the way.
Rosalina is a playable character within Super Mario 3D World, and compares to all of the cast, and can be harmed by both Bowser, the minibosses, and even the fodder enemies (stay with me here I already know what you’re gonna say).

First of all, there is no reason to argue that this isn’t canon, when Mario itself has a pretty loose/inconsistent canon outside of a few specific things, and applying a narrative like that for stuff isn’t going to get you anywhere (which, I honestly think applies to Sonic as well, but I’ll get to him in a bit). Hell, in previous games, bonus worlds literally do continue the story (I.E 3D Land has Luigi get kidnapped by Bowser after the events of the main game). So I got the small thing out of the way here, let’s go to the big thing.

You can argue that this is nothing more than gameplay mechanics, and that similar stuff can be applied to other series (I.E Pokemon, Kirby, Castlevania etc.), and normally that’d be a very good point, but there’s a clear difference to that in which the fodder enemies prove to be more comparable to the main cast than one would think. Remember when I mentioned the Minion’s Quest from the Superstar Saga remake earlier for that bit feat? Well that’s because there’s some notes regarding minions we can take from that. First is that the intro directly mentions how random ass Goombas do survive getting stomped on and attacks from Mario (this Goomba is the tutorial Goomba from the original game's opening, and the dialogue between the Koopalings and Goombas establish this). Now, yes, it is very possible that Mario was holding back or something (even though him not giving a single bit of effort against every Goomba imaginable is not the most cohesive thing, but it’s something I wouldn’t be able to really have any evidence against so whatever). But thankfully, these minions also fight all of the Koopalings and Fawful. The Koopalings and Fawful consistently act as comparable to Mario and fight on even ground time and time again, before and after the events of Superstar Saga. Now what does that have to do with my point again? Well, it basically serves as evidence how fodder can compare to Mario/enemies that can harm Mario, and honestly shows that even random fodder enemies do compare to the main cast in some way, and Rosalina being able to take them on (as well as the minibosses, Bosses, and Bowser, who are all more easily comparable), it honestly does seem fair at this point to say that Rosa compares. Rosalina was capable of blocking and enduring the universe reset at the end of Mario Galaxy (it is worth noting how the Mario cast was going to be killed by this feat initially, but I suppose events after the reset of the universe allowed Mario and crew to be more comparable to Rosalina. This is a mostly baseless theory that shouldn’t be taken seriously, but hey, Sonic had something similar happen to him even without a universal reset.)

Joking and speculation aside, let’s get to the other main reason I would argue this.

Paper Mario.
Paper Mario endures the collapse of the Sammer Kingdom, which is an established Universal feat. The main argument I see against this is the assumption that Tippi teleports them out. I’ll play Devil’s Advocate and say that this isn’t the most implausible thing ever (Tippi has seemingly teleported people unconsciously, as seen when she teleports Mario out of space seemingly involuntarily). However, the main issue with this is that….watching the scene, there is literally nothing that implies that happened.

> Tippi herself doesn’t seem to be completely aware of what happened
> Mario fainted, heavily implying that even if he was teleported out, he was still affected to some extent.

Occam’s Razor is our term of the day. It means that usually the easiest answer to a situation is likely the correct one, and since there is no indication that Tippi or anyone else teleported them out there that doesn’t make stretches or more unlikely assumptions, it seems more likely that Paper Mario himself had been affected by this collapse. Especially because, if Tippi did teleport them out, the game likely would have emphasised this more.

And yes, Paper Mario and regular Mario are established as separate continuities in Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam, but in that same game Mario and Luigi literally fight on par, so they’d scale (unless you want to argue some Tifa Lockhart not scaling to her party BS). Also, the final boss is literally Bowser using Paper Bowser as armor. Paper Bowser compares to Paper Mario for obvious reasons.

So yeah, I think Mario should be Universal+ because of consistent scaling that makes sense the more you look at it, and even without it Mario should still be Solar System at least.

In speed, Mario is one surprisingly fast boi. He can react to abolating bullet bills, and dodge lightning, and Cappy flies from the Mushroom Kingdom to the Cap Kingdom in a short time (got MHS+) but it gets a big crazier than that. He dodges laser beams (that do show properties of light, mind you), and outswims black holes. But anyway, here’s some big stuff.

I already mentioned Raphael’s flight earlier, which got well into the millions of c. But we also have Mario reacting while flying at MFTL speeds (348 Billionc), Mario fighting something comparable to the Millenium Star (16 TrillionsC), and Bowser being able to tag the Starship Mario (76 Trillionc. Keep in mind that while Bowser did attack it off screen, he had to have compared to the ship in someway, unless he somehow sneaked up to this ship while Lubba is sleeping. And if the ship was exponentially faster than Bowser, it’d be gone way before the King of the Koopas could ever threaten it. Occam’s back to shave your ass). Rosalina’s Comet Observatory has also shown feats that are 131 Quadrillionc. Bowser’s airships have compared to it in speed before, and Rosalina can properly pilot it, so it probably could be applied to Mario as well.

Anyway, onto.

Sonic
Sonic’s AP is a fuuuuuun ride. For starters, Sonic smashes a Hilltop in CD’s Opening, and Chaos floods parts of Station Square, which both should be about MCB-Town. All fine and dandy, but we also have Black Doom summoning storms in the opening of Shadow the Hedgehog, and some cloud parting from Blaze and Iblis after they leave in 06, which should definitely be in the Town-City level range. This is more what is often seen, but I’d like to note some things here. Since we are including X most likely, Base Sonic does go up to Island as Knuckles fails to pull a DK while making a decently sized boom boom regardless.

But some other Misc. Notes.

* Eggman’s machine in Lost World threatened to suck the energy from Earth, which is used to argue Multi-Continental.This is often contested, but it IS worth noting that the climate does seem to be affected, as Amy is shivering when talking to Sonic about it (albeit in the context in which stuff is changed, it'd likely yield around Island, but hey consistency there at least)
* At the end of CD, Sonic breaks the chains to Little Planet. This chain was what kept Little Planet from going back into orbit. While the planet is consistently shown as small in CD, the levels themselves imply Little Planet is decently big, and even in Sonic 4, the planet is notably bigger.
*Base Sonic fights Emerl with the seven emeralds, who threatened to destroy the planet.
*Both Sonic Colors and Free Riders have some Black Hole-esque stuff. These have often been contested, however there are also calcs that put them at Large Planet and Small Star respectively it seems.

So I can get behind Multi-Continental or even beyond that for Base Sonic, but this doesn’t matter too much at the moment.

Speed is surprisingly simple. He is often put at High Hypersonic for Metal Sonic’s flight in Sonic 4, or Knuckles decking Sonic high into the sky, but I think Sonic should be FTL in base.

First for dodging the Hotarus' beam at such close range (mmmmmm I love Sonic CD's animations)
Second is the Light Speed Dash, which is not Sonic’s top speed. If one uses Sonic Unleashed’s meter, you can get about 9c for Sonic from there.
In Sonic Shuffle, Sonic and crew also outrun a black hole, so something else to note from there. Not sure how quantifiable that is, but definitely FTL nonetheless.

I honestly used to contest FTL Base Sonic but, I think it’s pretty clear now. Archie has some pretty good MFTL stuff too, but lol at Archie not being used for whatever reason.

Anyway, we should also talk about-
Super Sonic

Yeah that thing.
While contested, there is some things to note about Super Sonic. The Perfect Dark Gaia stuff and Space Colony Ark are used to put him at Large Planet level within this state (former broke apart the Earth and the latter was going to collide with the Earth to destroy it). However, one could also Universal because of Solaris fucking up Universes, Time Eater distorting time and space, Power of the Stars’ potential to merge dimensions, etc. From this, you can’t exactly call Universal Super Sonic an outlier really. I’ve seen these feats contested, but as of right now I don’t have too many striking issues with them.

In terms of speed, I’ve seen it kinda go all over, but Iblis does chuck the emeralds across the universe in which it's manipulating, and the super forms fly to the center here to stop Solaris. I have seen these calced as 6.8 Quadrillionc and 227 Trillionc respectively, so let's just use these numbers, as they are the highest I’ve seen.
So uh, let’s tally this one up.

Mario:
AP and Dura: Universal+
Speed: MFTL+ (131 Quadrillionc)

Base Sonic:
AP and Dura: At least Town to City, potentially Multi-Continent- Small Star (????)
Speed: FTL (9c)

Super Sonic:
AP and Dura: Universal+
Speed: MFTL+ (6.8 Quadrillionc)

So uh
Yeah

Seems like Mario has the stats edge here, especially against Base Sonic. But uh, we aren’t done yet folks. We have a LOT of arsenal to cover, and to put it lightly…..Sonic is even more screwed when looking at it here.

The original episode argues that their arsenal counters each other when it really….doesn’t.

OK well, in some ways it kinda does.

Sonic has power rings that can resist transmutation, and Mario can also resist transmutation thanks to the Safety Ring and surviving some blasts from Kamek that transmutate.

Sonic can resist Electrical and Fire attacks from Mario thanks to the Flame and Electric Shield, so that will help him against Mario’s attacks to some extent.

Sonic can summon the emeralds back should Mario take them with the Plunder Chest or make Sonic drop them with one of his hammers.

Both have time stops.

Both have instant revival and healing. Etc. Etc.

But the issue is that Mario’s sheer variety in power ups is staggering, meaning that whatever Sonic has, Mario just has but better. Mario has more healing options than Sonic, he has a greater variety of elemental abilities (and I think it could be argued that Mario giving a few physical blows can destroy Sonic’s shields easily but I digress), Mario’s instant revival is just better overall (Sonic’s leaves him barely alive, while Mario can literally rewind the clock and get a do over should he be done in), and hell, even though Sonic can summon the emeralds, Mario can just take them again and destroy them (The Super Emeralds are cracked in Mania, and Base Knuckles can destroy the Master Emerald. There isn’t any reason to believe Mario couldn’t do the same to something weaker than both.)

And beyond that, Mario just has more and more shit.

> Has hammers specifically more dangerous to spiked enemies
> Has hammers that do more damage should he be shrunk
> Has hammers that do more damage the more coins he has (and after NSMB2, he arguably has a lot of coins)
> Cappy, who acts as an aid to not only fight back, but can also possess Sonic (It’s been argued that Sonic has resisted Possession, but Dark Gaia specifically targets the sin in someone's heart, or darkness a la some Kingdom Hearts BS, and Sonic resists it because he is le good guy with strong will against the dark. This is such a vague and specific method of possession that comparing it to Cappy, someone who completely assimilates Mario to what he possesses is a stretch at best)
> Can make endless clones of himself, just as strong as he is, with the Double Cherry
> A variety of ways to traverse different areas, whether air, the ground, or the sea
> A variety of summons and traps he can place
> Can turn into a variety of destructive forces (tornados, giant bowling balls, if you wanna give Mario PM gear for whatever reason the Fan Cards alone)
> Several methods of invincibility to boost his defense
> Much more armor
> Cartoony guns (which, are admittedly not bad amazing as the Omochao Gun but that's Shadow's so GG)
Etc.

And the worst part is? While Sonic’s arsenal can theoretically counter a lot of Mario’s, there is one thing that ruins it. And that’s the Bottomless Gloves. Essentially, they allow Mario to use items without consuming them, basically meaning that with them, he can never run out of items. So, even if you want to argue that Sonic can somehow keep up with the sheer power and variety of Mario’s arsenal with his own, that won’t stop the fact that Sonic’s items WILL run out, and that Mario’s won’t, meaning that all Sonic can do against Mario arsenal wise is stall the inevitable.

And finally, Super Sonic.
While Super Sonic VS Mario is a lot more debatable, the issue is that Sonic would honestly be defeated before he’d ever think to use the Emeralds (and no, he would not use them immediately given his personality, especially against someone like Mario. He only ever used the emeralds on threats he KNOWS he needs them for, outside of when he literally just got them after Sonic 2 and tried testing them. He wouldn't immediately see Mario as a threat he should use the form for). Mario not only has ways to disarm the emeralds from him or make him drop them with one of the emeralds before disposing of them (as I mentioned above), but the sheer gap between Mario and Base Sonic is just so staggering that Sonic just won’t ever get the chance. There is his instant revival, but as I said it leaves him weak upon use and his items are more finite than Mario’s. Even if you want to argue that Sonic can get to Super, Mario is still notably faster, and with his insane variety of power ups, weapons, methods of stat boosting, hax, etc., Mario could honestly keep up with or stall Super Sonic until it's done (bosses have been able to use physical force to wear Super Sonic's power down, I.E the Egg Reviere from Sonic Mania). It is worth noting that Sonic was seen in Super a few days after transforming in the ending of one of the Advanced Games, but since there is nothing Sonic could have been doing in between this timeframe, it can be contested whether or not Sonic was Super for several days straight.

There’s also experience and intelligence, but while Mario has a slight edge in the former, neither really matter enough to mean anything in terms of the verdict here.

Overall, while Super Sonic can arguably take on Mario for a bit, Mario’s strength, speed, durability, endless arsenal, and slight experience edge just overwhelm Sonic from the very start of the fight.

Mario will be doing the Odyssey while Sonic Forces himself to make a good game again.

Just hope for a good fight that reflects that absolutely amazing track, and a next time that won’t part the seas. And for anyone who actually cares after reading so much, I don’t have a preference between Mario and Sonic as characters. Mario is more consistently great while Sonic has his highs and lows. Chuckster is still God himself and solos both, BTW.

See ya again whenever Mickey VS Bugs happens, maybe there’s some other fights I could help with but, I dunno, we’ll see.

Ciao (or, meow, I guess)

Brobuscus

Oh, ho ho, here we go.

It’s the big 100th episode, so of course they’d go back and redo a matchup they did 7 years ago, instead of doing something fresh or whatever.

Real talk, I understand why they’re redoing this, but I’m a little let down that this is what we got for episode 100. Especially since A.) Optimus VS Gundam & Nightwing VS Daredevil were announced roughly 2 months ago(as I’m writing this) at RTX, and B.) The last rematch they did wasn’t exactly the most beloved episode they’ve done. Oh well, at least it’s not something that completely messes up the scheduling, which is what would’ve happened if something like Galactus VS Unicron happened. Anyways, where were we?

Mario VS Sonic is a classic matchup that every VS debater has looked into at least a little bit to determine who wins, and is one that school kids and even working adults(I’m dead serious) have talked about, debating on which game is superior. Death Battle has done it in the past (duh), One Minute Melee tackled it, Battle Mode tackled it (btw, shout out to Duo Dreamer, go watch his videos #shamelessplug), Cartoon Fight Club/Rewind Rumble has tackled it several times (but who really cares about that at this point?), and YouTube is full of videos regarding the topic. Whether it be simple fan animations or people having discussions about it. It’s talked about THAT much. It’s the Video Game version of Goku VS Superman. With that said, I fear that one day, this matchup will become the new Goku VS Superman, and will be discussed by literally everyone, regardless of their…...well, reliability or sanity.

With that out of the way, time for me to discuss my thoughts on this crazy matchup, because unlike Optimus VS Gundam and Nightwing VS Daredevil, this matchup can actually be discussed by a lot of people in unique ways, regardless of how many people agree with each other. Thankfully (at least hopefully), this matchup isn’t another Carnage VS Lucy where some people who have different opinions on who wins and why are at each other’s throats about it (that was a painful 3 weeks in 90% of the Discord servers I’m in).

Well, first things first, since this is apparently a theme for this blog, let’s discuss my personal preferences first.

I want Sonic to win this pretty badly.

And this is actually for a variety of reasons.

  1. I like Sonic more, plain and simple
  2. Sonic’s an underdog and I feel bad for him
  3. I prefer playing Sonic games over Mario games, regardless of both of their quality
  4. Daredevil losing to Nightwing puts an upsetting taste in my mouth, and Sonic winning will cleanse that (hopefully)
  5. The good Sonic games get ignored by a lot of people whenever a mediocre-bad game comes out, whereas the opposite is said for Mario (usually)
  6. Sega has more of a social sense of humor and personality than Nintendo(don’t believe me? Well, Sega goes along with the memes spawned from their games, regardless of the meme’s actual quality, whereas Nintendo has copyrighted YouTube videos that simply show their love for their games)
There’s probably other reasons, but I don’t remember them, nor do I care to actually try to remember them.

Before I go into detail about who wins this, I’d like to take the time to talk about arguments I’ve seen for why both of these guys are a certain tier, and try my hardest to explain why I don’t believe these arguments to be legitimate. There’s arguments for both characters, so I’m not trying to shoot down just one person here.

“Mario scales to Rosalina because he can hurt and catch the same enemies she can in Super Mario 3D World.”

There’s an argument for Sonic that I disagree with just as much as I do this one (if not more), but we’ll get to that later.

So, as Strunton below me says (I’ll try to keep this brief so I don’t steal his thunder), in Super Mario 3D World, after you beat the game, you unlock Rosalina, and she becomes playable throughout the game, if you were to replay it. When I first heard this was a thing, I remembered how she was in Super Mario Galaxy, and while I don’t have anything against Rosalina as a character, I thought that was a terrible idea, given how freaking broken she is. And now that it’s a thing and I’ve heard people legitimately arguing that Mario scales, both the gamer side of me and the VS debater side was really annoyed.

The argument here is that Rosalina is able to take down the same enemies Mario can (which is blatantly obvious), and vice versa. It’s the vice versa that throws me off here. Mario taking down the same enemies Rosalina can with the same difficulty is a result of Rosalina being nerfed to high heaven in order for her to be playable. Saying that Mario can take down the same threats Rosalina can in SM3DW is the equivalent of saying a freaking Goomba can kill Rosalina. It just doesn’t work. And yes, I know that Goombas killing Mario is because of gameplay mechanics, but that’s exactly my point. Mario & Rosalina having the same effort put into defeating the exact same enemy is a result of gameplay mechanics and nothing more.

If you’re still accepting this scaling, then let me remind you that in the Pokémon games, any Pokémon has the potential to beat each other down. Which means we’d get freaking Magikarp scaling to Arceus, Darkrai, Giratina, the Bird Trio, and any other Legendary Pokémon. If that and everything else that Strunt lists below me aren’t enough to convince you, I don’t know what will.

“Bowser survived a black hole that destroyed the universe.”

So, in the official guidebook to the first Super Mario Galaxy game, it claims that the black hole at the end of the game destroyed the entire universe and Rosalina reset it.

I can poke so many holes in this argument.

First off, whether or not Bowser actually survived that black hole was never really revealed. Yes, he shows up at the Mushroom Kingdom again, and in the next game continues his repeated cycle of kidnapping Peach and losing to Mario again(which describes every Mario game ever), but the thing is that Rosalina basically reset everything after the black hole, and in the time that she was doing that, there is no sign or mention of Bowser’s fate. We literally have no idea what happened to him. Did he die? Was he protected? Did he survive via sheer durability alone? We don’t know, because the game never brought it up. But the guidebook did, and that leads into my next counter argument.

The guidebook claims that Bowser “paid the price.” Blatantly telling you that the supernova or black hole did actually kill him.

Next up, like the curiosity of what actually happened to Bowser, how much destruction the black hole actually caused is also a little dubious. We see the black hole, then Mario & Peach get sucked into it, the Lumas fly into the black hole, Rosalina talks to Mario for a bit, and then everyone is back on the Mushroom Kingdom as if nothing in the entire game actually happened. You’d think the game would give us at least something regarding the destruction caused or the lives it took, but no. It explains literally nothing about what happened at the end. So we don’t actually know if it destroyed the entire universe. And even if it did, and Bowser did survive without any protection, that kind of power or durability has never been seen anywhere else by Bowser, Mario, or anyone who they scale to. So it can easily be considered an outlier.

Also, guidebooks are written by people who don’t give a flying crap about VS debating, and write that stuff to make things sound cool or really really powerful. Word of God, if you will. This kinda crap is what gives us Solar System Level Cell, even though that kinda power came into Dragon Ball after Cell had already died. It has to be proven in canon in order to count, and while sometimes it has, it hasn’t other times, and this is an example of the latter.

“Mario is Universal because of this feat he did in Paper Mario.”

This one’s easy to shoot down.

Basically, when people argue that Mario is Universal, they usually provide a feat from the Paper Mario games in order to prove this. And this isn’t Mario scaling to his Paper counterpart, but they’re saying this as if Mario & Paper Mario are the same character. This is an easy one to counter.

Mario & Paper Mario aren’t the same character. Plain and simple.

Don’t believe me? Well, Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam shows this to be true, as they’re depicted as two separate characters. So there ya go.

That’s pretty much it for Mario, now it’s Sonic’s turn(this is gonna hurt me)

“Sonic helped defeat Solaris, who existed in every point of time, making him Universal.”

I mean, yeah?

Solaris is definitely a Universal threat, and Sonic, Shadow, and Silver were able to take it down. It sounds pretty straight forward, but there’s one eetzy beetzy but ever so crucial inscy wincy detail(I probably spelled 90% of that wrong and I apologize):

It’s a massive outlier

This kind of strength is something the Sonic games have never shown anywhere else. Now, while yes, the Time Eater exists, there’s no way that thing is Universal. It just uses a buttload of hax. It’s the TIME Eater, not the UNIVERSE Eater.

“Sonic in his base form has been stated by several sources, including several characters, to be faster than light.”

Remember that argument I brought up before when talking about Mario scaling to Rosalina? Yeah, here we are.

Ok, so in one of the Sonic games(I believe it was Sonic Rivals, but I could be wrong), Omega scans Sonic and determines that he can run at light speed, and Sonic responds saying that light speed is no problem for him. And several guidebooks have joined in on that theory as well.

Here’s the issue: Sonic has several light speed abilities in his base form, including the Light Speed Shoes and the Cyan Wisp. They allow Sonic to dash away at speeds at least the speed of light. They’re all cool and everything, but that begs the question: If he can truly run at FTL speeds on his own, then why does he need that stuff in the first place? The answer: He can’t run that fast without them. And like Wiz said in Metal Sonic VS Zero, Sonic has yet to prove this claim without the use of outside equipment.

“Super Sonic can take down Universal threats in the comics.”

In the comics, maybe, but not in the games.

Besides, the Archie comics have been debunked by a lot of people before, including Ultraguy, a member of the official DB research team. There’s too much stuff misunderstood from them that lead to several contentions for them.

I don’t know if I covered every argument that I have issues with, but if I missed one, it’s probably one that people who have an IQ above 3 can contend.

Alright, now that we’ve gotten the debunks out of the way, let’s finally get into the nitty gritty here. And to start, we of course have to go over the stat trinity: Strength, Speed, and Durability.
STRENGTH

To some, this may be a tough decision, but when you look into it, it’s pretty straight forward. First of all, it should be pretty obvious that Mario COMPLETELY outmuscles base Sonic. In his base form, Sonic can match the strength of Eggman’s giant mechs, including E-18, who weighs 550 tons. And with Knuckles, Sonic created an explosion that took out the 750 thousand ton Egg Makan. All these and more can reach a maximum of Large Town-City Level. This sounds better than anything Mario has done on paper, but even Mario’s weaker feats are as powerful as that at the very least. Punting castles, outmuscling Bowser, harming Wario, Donkey Kong, Bowser, etc., feats that range from City-Star-Solar System Level. Far greater than Sonic. Even in his Super form, while it has impressive and consistent Planet Level feats, he still pails in comparison to Mario.

Obviously, I’m not expecting this to be an arm wrestling contest, but whether it is or isn’t, Mario has the edge in the strength category by a massive margin.

SPEED

This can be split up into 2 separate ways. Who can win a track race, and who can dodge a bullet faster. To be blunt, it’s travel speed VS reaction speed. If we’re talking travel speed, Mario can sprint fast enough to cause a sonic boom. Impressive, but Sonic can do that and more at a casual speed, and as Super Sonic, he can travel at least the speed of light.

Basically, if this were a race, Sonic would have this fight in the bag.

But then we get into reaction speed. While Sonic’s reaction speed should be at least as good as his travel speed, Mario has shown better reaction speeds than not only his own travel speed, but also Sonic’s. With feats ranging from millions to trillions of times faster than light, Mario’s reaction time goes SEVERAL steps behind Sonic’s.

Travel Speed - Sonic wins
Reaction Speed - Mario wins

DURABILITY

While I don’t agree with Mario scaling to Rosalina, I do agree with him scaling to Bowser. And if you guys don’t remember from the feats we listed, Bowser survived a black hole on numerous occasions. Solidly Solar System Level. Meanwhile, Sonic can survive the impact of his own kinetic energy(thank you Isaac Newton), once again bringing up the Dark Gaia thing, putting Sonic in his Super form at Planet Level durability.

So Mario can hit harder, react faster, and take a harder hit, whereas Sonic can run/fly faster. So far, it seems like Mario’s got this in the bag, and from a physical standpoint, he does. But before we call it here, let’s look deeper.

Now, I’m aware that this episode is gonna be a reexamination from the ground up, basically meaning the old episode 7 years ago is basically irrelevant, but the main argument used in their verdict of that episode is being brought up again by some people, so let’s go over this:

Do Mario & Sonic’s power-ups counter each other?

The answer: No, at least not completely.

But while that’s the case, there are plenty of power-ups that Mario & Sonic have that do actually counter each other. So let’s go over the list of power-ups and equipment these two have that the other has an answer to.

Mario’s crazy strength and reactions can counter Super Sonic without any sort of power-ups, his Stop Watch can counter Sonic’s Chaos Control, and Mario’s experience certainly helps him out. Honestly, Mario’s strength and speed alone counter at least 90% of Sonic’s power-ups and abilities.

As for Sonic, his Fire Shield pretty much cancels out the Fire Flower in any way, his resistance to possession makes Cappy completely useless, Sonic’s danger-sensing quills can counter Mario’s invisibility, and Super Sonic can cancel out quite a bit of Mario’s equipment.

As for counters they share, they both have methods of stopping time and countering the other’s methods of stopping time, both can resist transmutation, ruling out the Gold Flower and Ring Time, both can become invincible for a short time, both can make their shrinking abilities useless, the idea that either of them can use power-ups and equipment stolen off of each other wouldn’t apply, both can send each other’s projectiles back at them, and both seem pretty equal in intelligence.

There’s probably too many things being ruled out here to go over how useful the remaining powers are, so let’s just go over how this works even if they did completely counter each other.

It’s as I said earlier, Sonic may be able to run faster than Mario, but Mario can react to things way faster than Sonic, can hit harder than anything Sonic’s taken hits from, and can take hits from things way stronger than Sonic.

The added on power-ups that don’t get counted out don’t add much, but they do add a range of versatility to both characters, and unfortunately, this only helps out Mario even more.

Regardless of how many of their abilities would actually be useful against each other, Mario’s sheer variety and numbers overwhelm Sonic’s. I guess it doesn’t help that Mario has almost every ability and power-up usage as Sonic does and more.

So Sonic’s outmatched in strength, reactions, durability, versatility, and experience, whereas Mario’s outclassed in physical running speed.

At least Sonic’s games have better music(this will not be contested).

All in all, Sonic’s endgame approaches once again, just as it did 20 years ago during the Console Wars. The winner is Mario.

Although if Sonic does BS himself a win, I’ll sing it’s praises

Strunton

Weeeeeeeeeew boy. This match. Goku vs Superman: Video Game Edition. If you know me very well, you’d know I’m a fan of this match and I’m looking forward to seeing how DB analyzes both this time around.

Alright. Time for me to start some slight controversy.

I’m not going to beat around the bush. Don’t get me wrong, both characters have a lot of feats that I question, but I just can’t get behind Mario being universal level (or at least at the moment) for scaling to Rosalina in 3D World and Paper Mario’s feat of “surviving” Sammer’s Kingdom being consumed (though admittedly, I do believe this a stronger case to try and use).

Let me start with the Rosalina scaling. As you know, Rosalina was blatantly above everyone in the end of Mario Galaxy but in 3D World, after you beat Bowser and some levels in a bonus world, you unlock Rosalina and can choose to play as her throughout the rest of game. In the game, Rosalina can get hurt by the same things that hurts Mario (Goombas, Koopa Troopas, etc.), and Mario can hurt the things that hurts Rosalina. And technically, you can play through the entire game as Rosalina and replay through stages where Bowser can hurt you.

Why do I have a hard time getting behind this? Is it because I’m stubborn? Eh, probably, but nah. The main reason I have a hard time getting behind this is because I don’t really see it being anything more than just gameplay mechanics. Of course they’re gonna hurt Rosalina during gameplay. That’s how levels in video games are designed. Gameplay, for the most part, will deliberately adjust someone’s stats and power to make gameplay more fair. Injustice wouldn’t be a fun game if every street leveler realistically shattered their hands when striking Superman’s pecks, would it? Honestly, I feel like I can use this same logic to try and justify a lot of things that are blatantly not true.

*Fodder Heartless can hurt Sora in gameplay.
*Shinra Soldiers can hurt Cloud in gameplay.
*Every enemy in Majora’s Mask can harm Fierce Deity Link in gameplay.
*Dan Hibiki can hurt Oni Akuma in gameplay.
*Hard Hats can hurt Mega Man in gameplay.
*Cut Man can hurt Mega Man X in gameplay.
*Bats can hurt Castelvania characters in gameplay.
*Nappa can hurt Broly and Cell in gameplay.
*Birds can hurt Ryu Hayabusa in gameplay.
*Fodder enemies can hurt Kratos in gameplay.
*Fodder demons can hurt Dante in gameplay.
*Apples are a threat to Kirby in gameplay.
*Shadow eats bullets in Shadow the Hedgehog’s opening cutscene, but they hurt in gameplay
*Fodder Badniks can hurt Sonic in gameplay.
*The boss of Metallic Madness Zone Act 1 can kill Super Sonic via crushing him in gameplay.
*Freaking Magikarps can harm Arceus in gameplay.

Have I beaten this dead horse yet? Yeah, the horse is decomposing, so I’ll stop right here. You get the point. I’m not comfortable with scaling Mario to Rosalina if the SOLE reason is just because some enemies can hurt her during gameplay, because that feels like a gameplay mechanic. You can go back through the story and fight Bowser after you unlock her? Well if she’s only playable after you beat him then it’s pretty blatant she wasn’t apart of that story and Bowser didn’t threaten her.

Heck, if they had a cutscene of Bowser being a threat to Rosalina, then I could see it more. Hecker, if there was a quick time event in the gameplay that backed it up, that would help too. Or even heckest, most heck, if Mario took a hit with no damage and that same attack made Rosalina faint, then I’ll buy. But as for now, in my honest opinion, I’m just not comfortable with the scaling.

I also don’t think that using Mario Party or any of his Sport Games because she’s “giving it her all” is a strong case to try and back up the scaling either. That honestly feels like the equivalent of using Arcade mode to justify Dan Hibiki scaling to Akuma and Oro. It’s gameplay mechanics.

I should note that some of the Party/Sports games have story modes and intros in them, and as far as I know, Rosalina is not in a single one of them. If there was a cutscene in story mode where Mario has to complete the mission of boxing the lumas out of Rosalina, then I could see it, but there’s not. Also, and being real for a second...I doubt when Rosalina is playing tennis, she’s striking the ball with a force equivalent to the big bang. And also, if we’re gonna use that kind of logic, then I guess all the base characters who can win a race against Super Sonic in any of the racing games or can play tennis with him in his sports games makes them on par with Super Sonic then, since he’s clearly “giving it his all when competing.”

As for Paper Mario surviving the destruction of Sammer’s Kingdom, admittedly I can see how this one could possibly be legit. However, there’s one thing about the feat that bothers me greatly and makes me doubt the characters tanked the destruction of the universe.

How exactly did Paper Mario and friends get back to Flipside? If they were taking the destruction of the universe, they should have stayed in that world along with everything else, like the Pure Heart. How did they manage to do that? I think Tippi just simply teleported them out of world before it could be fully destroyed. Tippi has the ability to teleport Mario back to Flipside, so it’s not that far fetched that she just easily brought them back. What other explanation is there? The Pure Hearts protected them? Possible but I doubt it. They’ve never shown they could do that. And I know some people will argue that Tippi made it sound like she herself had no clue how they made it back to Flipside, but she could have just easily activated it out of panic and didn’t understand what was happening. In fact, that has happened in the game itself, and Tippi didn’t know how she got Mario out of space, even though it was very clear she teleported them out of the world.

“I don’t really know how I got us all out of there...It just sort of happened…”
-Tippi 2007

So why is it so far fetched to believe that Tippi just simply teleported them out of Sammer’s Kingdom before it got destroyed and didn’t understand what was happening because she activated it out of panic? She did it before in another panic situation, and it is the only explanation as to how they got back to Flipside. And while people would say that the cast being knocked out means they have to have taken the destruction, people can faint/pass out during intense situations, and I’m pretty sure thinking you’re about to die and be consumed with the universe is a pretty intense panic situation. Plus, in context with the story, it makes no sense for any of the characters to survive the void consuming the universe when it was made clear through the game that the void would consume all of existence, Mario included, but that’s just me.

So as for now, I honestly can’t get behind Mario being universal at the moment. As neat as Mario going up against Dragon Ball Super characters would be, I think it’s kind of meh to me tbh.

Also, it doesn’t help me that Mario is a very inconsistent series, but that’s just a minor nitpick that doesn’t really mean much in the end.

But hey, just because I’m not comfortable with the reasons that people use to say Mario is universal means doesn’t mean I’m comfortable with the reasons to say Super Sonic is universal to low multiversal, or at least Video Game Sonic that is. There’s a reason why I never really pushed for Sonic being at such a high level. Why? Because I really can’t decide if the “universal level” bad guys should be universal via physicality or hax.

Time Eater was only considered to be as strong as he is through the ability to erase timelines, but I’m not quite sure the same thing as surviving a universe busting attack at point blank range, right?

The Egg Wizard? It had the ability to merge universes together, and technically Sonic can take hits from the thing so...I guess? I know some will claim he never directly said anything about merging the universes, but it’s pretty clear that was his plan to achieve with the Power of the Stars. I mean, Eggman outright said the thing is more powerful than the Chaos Emeralds and the Sol Emeralds, so that kind of makes me question the scaling a little bit.

Eh, I don’t know. Like Mario, I get the reasoning behind it, but I’m just not too comfortable in saying I believe Super Sonic is anywhere near universal to low multiversal level. Plus, like Mario, doesn’t help me that Sonic is pretty inconsistent. But eh, doesn’t matter tbh. I’m still gonna take them into consideration anyway in the verdict.

Wew. That one section was much longer than it needed to be. Huh, well let’s go ahead and wrap this up because I’m far from done.

Okay, I’ll be honest. I definitely don’t think DEATH BATTLE was right when they said Mario and Sonic power-ups could counter each other perfectly, but I do think they were on to something, because both do counter A LOT of what the other can throw at them.

*Mario can’t really burn, freeze, or electrocute Sonic because he has shields that nullifies fire and electric based attacks and has already endured extreme cold before.
*Using fear most likely wouldn’t work thanks to Sonic’s resistance to mental manipulation
*Sonic may have multiple ways of stopping time, but that doesn’t really matter because Mario can do the exact same thing with the Stop Watch.  Maybe they’ll pull a Metal Sonic vs Zero and point out how Sonic has many more ways of doing it, but I honestly don’t see this mattering in the long run as some Sonic supporters make it out to be.
*Sonic can’t turn Mario into rings with Ring Time because he’s resisted transmutation with Safety Ring before and Mario can’t turn Sonic into coins because Sonic’s ring has let him resist transmutation as well in the Satam cartoon’s finale. He did kind of also break of petrification in Sonic and the Secret Rings, but that’s a little more iffy.
*Mario and Sonic both have ways of resetting a fight, whether it be with the Retry Clock or Chaos Control (it has been mentioned that Silver time traveled via Chaos Control), etc. Besides, I’m also pretty sure the time travel stuff Mario possesses isn’t any more or less obscure than the Time Stones.
*Mario and Sonic have items that make them invincible for a short period of time.
*Both can’t really use negative status ailments on each other because both carry items that prevents those kind of ailments
*Mario going invisible doesn’t help because Sonic has used his senses to locate invisible enemies. Plus, Sonic’s quills can sense danger...for some reason.
*Mario using intangibility wouldn’t work either. Sonic characters hit ghosts all the time.
*Both have multiple methods of healing themselves and reviving themselves.
*Both have items that amp up their strength, speed, and defense
*Mario can’t shrink Sonic, because Sonic can already do that with Scale
*Plunder Chest could probably help Mario steal some items (most would argue the Chaos Emeralds), but Mario doesn’t know to utilize Chaos Emeralds, and the last time someone took the emeralds away from Sonic in close proximity, he just outright summoned them right back to his location. Plus, I’m sure you can make the same argument for Sonic doing the same to some of Mario’s weapons with Enerbeam and Magnet.
*Both have ways of sending projectiles right back at their opponent.
*Mario has more experience, but him and Sonic have fought pretty much the same type of enemies.
*Both are about even in intelligence.
*In my opinion, Cappy’s not possessing Sonic. Dark Gaia’s evil energy possesses those it taints, and Sonic, who was the only person tainted that resisted the possession btw, was powered by that possessive energy every time he was a werehog. Chip himself even said it was more through willpower than anything as to why Sonic could fight it. And, while Archie isn’t going to be used (or at least no contradictory elements from it? I don’t know), it should be noted that during the time he was a werehog, he wasn’t fully immune to the possession because he was such a goody two shoes, because if he did, he wouldn’t have almost succumbed to the possession multiple times. He actually had to resist the possession itself. It feels very tomato tamato tbh.
*Everything else is either for getting around the environment or just easily doesn’t factor.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that EVERY single ability/item both possess is outright useless. I would assume the Blunt Hammer DX would be effective towards Sonic due to him having spikes (unless you would consider quills to not be spikes), and Bottomless Gloves would guarantee that he’s not running out of items (though I doubt that really matters in the long run cuz it doesn’t mean he still only use each item one at a time, but it does help). And of course, Super Sonic increases Sonic’s stats by a lot (said to be by 1000x in more than one source of media...which is kind of funny tbh), so that helps.

And as I’ve already said, I doubt experience matters in this match. Mario is technically more experienced, but Sonic has fought similar types of enemies that Mario has. I also do not think intelligence matters. Neither are master tacticians that are whipping out the most off the wall strategy to get the drop on the other. I would give Sonic a slight edge in intelligence, as he’s had more situations where he has had to think on his feet quickly, but in the end, both are pretty straightforward and would rather just charge straight in without giving it much thought.

I also do think some arguments are a bit of a stretch. I seriously doubt Sonic is just gonna up and teleport Mario to some alternate dimension or to the sun, considering that Sonic has never used that tactic in any form of media I’m aware of. I also think Mario taking away the emeralds and trying to break them is also very unlikely as well. Sure, WE know what the emeralds do and how they operate...but Mario doesn’t, and I doubt it’s gonna cross his mind to be like “Those-a emeralds will give-a him the powah to rip off-a Goku. Better stop him,” especially when he just kinda...lets people transform all the time. Plus, I seriously doubt Plunder Chest, the nonstandard item that only exists when playing a game board in the Party games, is going to be given to him.

So if it doesn’t come down to items, experience, or intelligence, then what would this fight come down to? Strength, speed, and endurance. And this is why this debate is kind of a nightmare to discuss, in my opinion at least, because both characters’ stats aren’t universally agreed upon, especially with all these new “upgrades” people are trying to push on both sides since the announcement of this fight.

Anyway, no matter what you accept for both, I do think it is fairly clear Mario, for the most part, should beat Sonic in his base form. I won’t lie, for a very long time, I had a hard time accepting Mario’s black hole feats, because I didn’t think they operated like one and felt the only thing they had in common were the names. Granted, while I do still kinda shrug my shoulders at it, I do at least find myself a little more accepting towards it now. Do I still really accept most black hole feats in general? Eh. I also have issues with saying Mario was star level via star in dimensions and the Raven turning into a star thing from Yoshi’s Island as well with some speed feats I still can’t bring myself to accepting because they don’t sit well with me (looking at you Bowser tagging what wasn’t even Starship Mario off screen). But even without that and holding those same restrictions towards Base Sonic, I always felt Base Mario, at minimum, was still stronger and had the reactions to keep up with and surpass the Blue Blur.

But of course, this fight doesn’t come down to Mario vs Base Sonic. It comes down to Mario vs Super Sonic. I know some will argue that “Mario beats Sonic before he goes Super Sonic,” but, personal beliefs aside, we know DEATH BATTLE is not using this logic to determine the fight. Plus, Ovus and the Angel Amulet can revive Sonic if he falls in battle anyway. There’s also Ring of Life and the Revival Ring, but I’ve yet to find if that revives anyone equipped with it in general or does it require someone else equipped with it to revive a fallen comrade. Technically, the Chaos Emeralds did resurrect him in 06, though some could argue Elise’s kiss (ew) could’ve played a role in that as well. At bare minimum though, Ovus revives him at least.

Anywho, Mario vs Super Sonic.

Alright, one thing I do wanna address real quick. I do not think outlasting Super Sonic is really an option for Mario. Yes, Super Sonic does not last forever, and the time limit can get inconsistent, but it has been shown that it can last for a good amount of time on average. In my opinion, rings are gameplay mechanics. It doesn’t have a time limit in Sonic R or Sonic Unleashed, Sonic X has Sonic holding the form for over 10 minutes (Episode 77 and 78) cutscenes like Sonic Advance, Adventure 2, Rush, Rush Adventure, and Unleashed shows that it clearly lasts longer than 50 seconds, and the thought of Super Sonic beating every final boss in under 50 seconds is a bit silly to me. Plus, if there’s no rings in any of the cutscenes (look at Sonic Unleashed) then that makes me feel that the thought of Super Sonic running on rings is just a gameplay mechanic.

So, as to who I think DEATH BATTLE will probably choose to be the winner of this rematch? Heck if I know. Just depends on whatever they accept for their feats and scaling. And tbh, it’s pretty unclear what exactly they believe on both ends. So here’s what I’ll do. I’ll list every scenario I can think of as to how determining the winner of this fight could go.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scenario #1: Let Mario achieve the highest form of scaling possible and only let Sonic to reach a level of scaling most usually can get behind. Let Mario be universal level via scaling him to Rosalina blocking the big bang, and let Sonic be large planet level via scaling him to Perfect Dark Gaia. If this is the case, Mario would win, because universal level >>>>>> large planet level.

Scenario #2: Take Scenario #1 and reverse it. Let Sonic reach the highest form of scaling possible and only let Mario reach a level of scaling most people usually get behind. In this case, Sonic would be low multiversal via scaling to Solaris, Time Eater, and Egg Wizard. Mario would be star to solar system level via Bowser falling into what’s presumably a real black hole, I guess. If this is the case, Sonic would win, because low multiversal level >>> solar system level.

Scenario #3:.Let’s have both characters achieve a level I tend to see gets accepted often without much debate. Mario would be solar system level via scaling to Bowser falling into what’s presumably a real black hole, and Sonic would only be around large planet level via scaling to Dark Gaia. If this is the case, Mario would win, because solar system >>> large planet level.

Scenario #4: Let both characters achieve the highest form of scaling possible for both series. Mario would be universal via scaling to Rosalina and Super Sonic would be low multiversal via scaling to Solaris, Time Eater, and Egg Wizard. If this is the case, Sonic would win, as being low multiversal level > universal level.

Scenario #5: Avoid using scaling all together. Don’t scale Mario and Sonic to anybody. Don’t scale Mario to Bowser, Rosalina, or any power source that exists in the Mario universe, and don’t scale Sonic to Solaris, Dark Gaia, or anything else that’s empowered by Chaos Emeralds. If this was the case, Sonic would win. Mario would have the reactions to keep up with Sonic, but he’d come short in everything else. Not only would Sonic have an answer to nearly everything Mario could throw at him, but Super Sonic would be too much. Mario’s best feat would be him kicking the castle, which is still technically better than anything base Sonic has shown he can physically do, but Super Sonic’s best feat would be him destroying Planet Mova, which is much better than anything Mario has done. And yes, while Sonic did have help from Super Shadow, dividing the results by 2 would still be higher than what Mario has shown. Not to mention, he survived the explosion without a scratch. And if one were to use Mario outswimming and falling into a black hole in Mario Party to support he’d be above Sonic in this section, you can use Sonic Shuffle, which has Sonic characters falling into and outrunning black holes to counter. And considering Super Sonic drastically increases his power to be far superior to his base form, Sonic wins this scenario.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Of all the scenarios I listed, I see DEATH BATTLE most likely operating under scenario #5. While I personally believe using scaling is fine, I don’t think DEATH BATTLE will rely on it that much when it comes to this fight.

And of course, of all the scenarios I can think of, Sonic wins the majority of them, thanks to having a counter for nearly everything Mario can throw at him and for having much better possible scaling options with Super Sonic, as well as better strength and durability without scaling.

But in the end, it doesn’t even matter. I’m sure that no matter who wins, I doubt there’ll be universal agreement. I can see it now. Either people will bring up some kind of feat DB missed or didn’t believe and use that to justify either winning, or someone i going to try and make an “upgrade” and try to push it for either character so they can win this fight. There’s a reason why I referred to this fight as the video game version of Goku vs Superman. It’s that controversial. But either way, all I really want is just a good fight and just wanna see how DEATH BATTLE will handle the fight overall.

Anyway, if I were force to place a bet on who would win the next DEATH BATTLE, I think the Blue Blur should win due to having a counter for nearly everything Mario can throw at him, as well as having a super form that would let him win more scenarios overall. And hey, no matter who wins, if you disagree, you can always settle it in Smash...or the Olympics.

Okay. That’s all from me. Sonic FTW.

Let me just start off by saying that this match has always been something I’ve wanted to see redone, and I’m so happy to see the direction the fight is going with it being animated and voice acted very well, surprisingly.

Here’s the deal with both of these characters-

Party games? Mario party and sonic shuffle.

Sports games? Tennis, Go-kart racing, even crossover Olympics games.

Countless feats that are constantly contested all the time? They both have that in spades. That’s the kind of mentality I want people to have when looking at this episode, there’s a lot the two have that require somewhat of an open mind to accept. I was never one for Mario’s black hole feats, but given how generally accepted it is, I have no reason to deny what is generally the rule of thumb for Mario. Sonic has various blackhole feats as well, from sonic riders to sonic shuffle.

Now when looking at this I’m gonna put it bluntly (and simply because some of these verdicts are crazy long and totally worth a read btw!)-

Mario whomps Base Sonic, hard. Sonic is without a doubt going to have to attain his super form in order to even stand up to Mario, but here’s the issue with that. The fact that Sonic even has to go super in the first place is a bad sign. And while I don’t think the fight will be resolved without Super Sonic, it’s an option.

This is where I bring up the open mind mentality. Super Sonic does have savings grace - his fight with Solaris. The feat itself is uncontestedly universal+, but the reason for it generally not being accepted is because it’s arguably an outlier.

With that in mind, a win for Sonic is reachable when considering that, but the issue with that is, Mario is barely that much weaker than Super Sonic.

Mario without a doubt has:

Experience
Power ups
Durability
And arguably speed thanks to his fight with he millennium star.

So for me, my heart says Sonic, because he’s essentially an underdog when it comes to Mario, in games and quality, and there is a chance he can win.

But my head says Mario, because the argument is a lot less hard to make for him.

I predict Mario will be this matches Super Star.

(Sonics got better music tho)

Sonic, Sonic, Sonic. Even with the 7 year gap filled with all sorts of new powers for him, this time, he will lose this time. Mario’s experience and his power ups usually lasting until he gets hit (or trips, in the case of most of the bros. items), while Sonics can only last a very limited amount of time unless he can find more wisps. Mario’s space adventures have proven his durability than Sonic’s own space adventures, and it seems bullet bills are faster than what the screen usually shows considering some of them are actually so fast they light the air on fire. Then there’s the actual power ups, which now offer Mario a lot of options that sonic doesn’t have, like the Rock Shroom, Boo Shroom, and Ice Flower. These new factors can very well make Mario borderline invisible or stop Sonic in his tracks. Sonic still has an advantage over speed and Super Sonic, but as covered before, Super Sonic can be countered by Mario’s various other power ups that make him invincible, and hell, he has a couple more ways of being invincible now. Some of Sonics whisps are too situational to be very useful, such as the Blue Cube or Rhythm Whisps, and while the Blue Cube can damage everyone on screen, Mario is more than likely able to tank that damage considering what he’s able to get through. Other whisps such as the Laser can potentially hurt but if Sonic misses he’s going to fling himself somewhere real far away. Drill and Spikes seem like the kind that would be most useful here, as they help him traverse areas Mario actually does not have perfect access to normally: Underground and walls. There is also Cappy, who is able to possess nearly anything with an open space on their head, hell not even if they have a head, considering he can take over electricity itself and a goddamn T-REX, though the T-Rex only has a limited time because of its size, though exiting the T-Rex seems to cause it to get knocked out for a bit.

From what I can see, Mario’s RPG equipment can also far outclass him in terms of how it can be used, while Sonic’s RPG equipment does not really counter anything Mario can throw at him. Mario has a much higher advantage in attack and defense against Sonic’s speed now. And with all these new powerups, Mario takes the cake and Sonic is left in the dust. But I’m willing to see the possibility of Sonic perhaps winning this if he attacks are all accurate enough to hit Mario and knock his power ups out of him.
