Death Battle Predictions: Dragonzord VS Mechagodzilla

Legends in both the East and West revered the dragon as a mythical creature capable of power far greater than what humans could imagine harnessing. While such strength seemed to be out of reach, advances in technology and mechanical engineering have allowed mankind to ultimately wield it in the most awesome way possible: giant mechas with which they can court chaos, save the world, or in most cases, both.

The Dragonzord, the mighty green Dinozord. Mechagodzilla, the Anti-G Special Weapon. Under the respective commands of Green Ranger Tommy Oliver and JSDF pilot Akane Yashiro, these behemoths have hunted down foul beasts all across the Earth to prevent the bloodshed of innocents, truly embodying the ferocious nature of their iconography and much more. Which one of these mechanical monstrosities will remain standing in the next episode of Death Battle?

In Case You’re Wondering...

It should be noted that there are three main versions of MechaGodzilla: Showa, Heisei and Millennium. For this prediction blog, we won’t be compositing feats together from all three versions. Rather, we will be looking at the one that Death Battle has confirmed they are using, which is the Millennium version (A.K.A Kiryu). The reason why we are doing so is we feel that they are too different from each other to be composited (they have widely different backstories and powersets from each other).

So unlike our usual modus operandi, we won’t be compositing MechaGodzilla in terms of using all three versions… though we will be using comic feats for both Dragonzord and Mechagodzilla (as long as it’s the Kiryu version).

Backstory

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

The year was 1993. The evil witch Rita Repulsa had decided to conquer Earth in the name of the United Alliance of Evil, and she was all set to do so with an army at her beck and call. However, as is the case with many villains, there was one small, but still very annoying wrench in her gears: her long time nemesis Zordon had recruited five teenagers with attitude as warriors for his cause. These were the Power Rangers, and they had kept Rita from victory on numerous occasions. So, how do you stop five spandex superheroes with their giant robots? Why with a spandex supervillain and his own giant robot, both more powerful than anything they had encountered before. Enter the Green Ranger and his own zord: the Dragonzord.

Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla & Tokyo S.O.S.

In 1999, a new Godzilla attacked the city of Tateyama. This was 45 years after the original Godzilla attacked Japan. Four years later, the Japanese government decided to build a giant robot to combat Godzilla and prevent further destruction from the kaiju. It also helped that the robot was built from the bones of the original Godzilla. Dubbed “Kiryu”, this version of Mechagodzilla was inducted into the Japan Self-Defenses Forces along with its pilots, the Kiryu Squadron. The leader of the Kiryu Squadron is Lieutenant Akane Yashiro. Under her command, Kiryu was able to hold its own against Godzilla and fight him in battle. And while Akane wouldn’t stay as Kiryu’s main pilot, Kiryu would still be sent to battlefield whenever Godzilla or another kaiju attacks Japan.

Pilots

Dragonzord

Tommy Oliver

The first ever sixth ranger, Tommy was born to a Native American tribe out in the California desert alongside his twin brother Sam. However, he was separated from his family as a baby and was adopted by the Oliver family. Tommy grew up while studying martial arts and moved to Angel Grove, California at the age of 14. After his first day of school, where he warded off local bullies Bulk and Skull, and having held his own against Red Ranger Jason Lee Scott in a martial arts tournament, he caught the attention of Rita. After sending a squad of putties to test Tommy, which he beat on his own, Rita kidnapped him. While under Rita’s mind control, he easily helped beat the other Power Rangers. But soon after, the Rangers destroyed the Sword of Darkness that was corrupting him and made him their best weapon.

As the pilot for the Dragonzord (as well as several other zords later on in Power Rangers history), Tommy can control its every move, make it mirror his actions, and even have it go wild while he fights on his own. Tommy also possesses the Dragon Dagger, a knife that can function as a remote for the Dragonzord by… playing it like a flute. Said flute can also generate electricity, so it can also be used as an attacking option if Tommy’s on his own.

MechaGodzilla

Akane Yashiro

Akane Yashiro didn’t grow up in the most ideal of circumstances, having lost both of her parents at a very young age. This event caused major psychological damage to her, causing her to lack any sort of self-worth and believe herself to be a mistake that should not exist. She eventually grew up to become a Japanese Self-Defense Forces Technician, though in 1999, her life changed drastically. On a mission against Godzilla, Akane accidentally killed upwards of eight members of the Japanese Def. by accidentally bumping them into the path of Godzilla’s foot. Afterwards she retired from technician work to be a librarian in the J.S.D.F. archives. Three years after this incident, she was recruited by the Japanese Self-Defense Forces to be part of the Kiryu Team, and eventually, when Kiryu was damaged, she became its pilot and operator due to her previous technician work.

As Kiryu’s pilot, she is easily able to maneuver and fight Godzilla, though due to her lack of self worth, she will often employ a reckless attitude while in combat, not caring if her own life is forfeit as long as Godzilla dies. Eventually however, she regained her self-worth and formed an extremely close bond to Kiryu, as well as Tokumitsu Yuhara and Sara Yuhara. She eventually found the redemption she was looking for.

Mechs

Dragonzord

The original sixth Zord in Power Rangers, the Dragonzord is under the control of whoever possesses its power coin and the Dragon Dagger. When not in use, the Dragonzord is stored under the ocean. Standing at 62 meters (203 feet, 4.94 inches) and weighing 170 tons (340,000 lbs.), the Dragonzord is always a big help whenever the Power Rangers need him.

MechaGodzilla

Built from the skeletal remains of the original 1954 Godzilla, this mechanical titan serves as Japan's ultimate defense against the new Godzilla and any other Kaiju that threatens to attack Japan. It stands at a height of 60 meters and weighs 36,000 metric tons (40,000 metric tons with its battle gear). When all else fails, Japan can count on Kiryu to take on the Big G himself.

Weapons

Dragonzord

Mechanised Tail

One of the main weapons that Dragonzord uses while in combat is his mechanical tail, which he can use to bash enemies, as shown during his fight with the Tyrannosaurus Rex Zord.

Tail Drill

Upon command, the Dragonzord is capable of activating its tail to make it a powerful drill, a weapon capable of hurting the red Dinozord and drilling into all kinds of enemy robots.

Finger Rockets

One of the Dragonzord’s main attacks is that it can missiles from its fingertips. These missiles can be used as a projectile attack, such as in its fight against the Tyrannosaurus Rex Zord, or break free from an attack, as shown during the fight against Spidertron.

Power Staff

The Power Staff is the main weapon of the Dragonzord Battle Mode. It can be used as a melee weapon, hitting the enemy monster with the drill, but it is most commonly used in the series as a finishing attack, charging up energy into the drill and then finishing the monster off by thrusting the Power Staff through them, making them explode.

Energy Fin

The Dragonzord has a fin on its head which can be used for close-quarters combat. While in Battle Mode, the Dragonzord is able to turn it into pure energy and launch it as a projectile at the enemy, though this can be reflected back.

Energy Shockwaves

When it stomps, the Dragonzord is capable of creating green energy shockwaves that push back any opponent in front of it.

Projectile Reflector

In the SNES Mighty Morphin Game, the Dragonzord is able to create an energy reflector to reflect projectiles back at the opponent. It is unknown if it is able to do this in main Power Rangers continuity.

MechaGodzilla

Oral-Mounted Maser Cannon

Also known as the Type-99 Double Maser Cannon (or Twin Maser Cannon), this weapon is a mason cannon mounted inside Kiryu's mouth. Despite a relatively low output, the Twin Maser beams possess 240% of the Type-90 Master Cannon's destructive power. It's strong enough to make Godzilla flinch and back away in pain, and even matched the Atomic Breath in terms of raw power.

Rocket Punch

In the 2003 GBA Game, Godzilla Domination, Kiryu can use a rocket-powered punch that will fly out and then come back to Kiryu. It is unknown if Kiryu can do this in the movies.

Red Shield

Also in Godzilla Domination, Kiryu is able to create a Red Shield that protects him from attacks. Like the Rocket Punch, it is unknown if Kiryu can do this in the movies.

Dual Laser Cannons

Another part of Kiryu’s arsenal are his wrist-mounted laser cannons.

Wire

If Kiryu ever needs to restrain its opponents or keep them close to him, its body can deploy  metal wire from its back to tie them up and keep them in place. This wire is strong enough to restrain Godzilla and in the comics both Anguirus and Baragon. It's typically used so that Kiryu can carry kaiju across large distances.

Railguns

In Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, Kiryu is equipped with the dual wrist-mounted high-speed Type-0 Railguns. In Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S., they were upgraded to the Type-4 Railguns. Both versions are relatively low-powered compared to the rest of Kiryu's arsenal and are normally used as preemptive strikes and in-conjunction with other weapons. However, they're strong enough to destroy multiple city blocks with the Type-4 Railguns being able to gain a reaction from Godzilla.

Missiles & Rockets

What would a giant robot be without some big guns, right? Well, Kiryu is loaded with them, and they are usually on its back unit. These can be fired either from its sides or through its twin front cannons. In Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, they were Type-95 270mm Multi-Purpose Guided Missiles for the sides and Type-87 680mm Multiple Interlocking Rockets for the main cannons. In Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S., they were upgraded to Type-98 320mm Multi-Purpose Guided Missiles and Type-4 Multiple Interlocking Rockets respectively. If that wasn’t enough, the second version of the backunit was capable of launching each individual cannon as a missile, creating explosions massive enough to damage Godzilla. They usually serve as opening fire or pre-emptive strikes in conjunction with the railguns. They are powerful enough to push back Godzilla, and can easily destroy multiple-story buildings.

Maser Blade

The Maser Blade is a small electrical blade stored inside Kiryu's Type-0 railgun gauntlets that can also act like a taser. Kiryu uses this weapon to stab Godzilla (drawing blood) and deliver a strong electrical surge directly into his body.

Flight Pack

With its flight pack, Kiryu is able to fly at supersonic speeds. Furthermore, the flight pack can be detached and used as a projectile to push its opponent away before being detonated from a safe distance.

Anti-Beast Drilling Device (Spiral Claws)

In Tokyo S.O.S., Kiryu's arsenal was upgraded to allow its right hand to collapse into a revolving drill. It did so by rapidly spinning until every finger merged together. It has shown to be very effective against Godzilla, causing extreme pain and piercing his skin with ease.

Triple Hyper Maser Cannon

After being heavily damaged in Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, the Absolute Zero Cannon was deemed too expensive to repair and was replaced by a Triple Hyper Maser Cannon in Tokyo S.O.S. The Triple Hyper Maser Cannon could be fired simultaneously with Kiryu's mouth cannon, which would cause Godzilla agonizing pain.

Absolute Zero Cannon

Kiryu’s most deadly weapon is the ‘Absolute Zero Cannon’, which is located in its chest. After charging for about 10 seconds, the cannon is capable of firing a -273.15°C ball of energy that flash-freezes its target to Absolute Zero, thereby causing it to disintegrate under the weight of its own mass at the molecular level. In order to use this powerful weapon, however, 40% of Kiryu’s energy is required. It is powered by an enormous synthetic diamond, which was damaged beyond repair after Kiryu’s second battle with Godzilla.

Upgrades/Forms

Dragonzord Battle Mode

The Dragonzord is able to combine with the Mastodon, Triceratops, and Sabertooth Tiger Dinozords to create the Dragonzord Battle Mode (Rangers can have access to other zords so the Dragonzord Battle Mode is allowed). Unlike the Dragonzord, which uses its hands, feet and tail for combat, Dragonzord Battle Mode uses the Dragonzord’s detached tail, which is combined with its chest piece to form the Power Staff. It has a height of 43 meters and weighs 560 tons.

Modified Type-3 Kiryu

After the final fight of Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla, Kiryu underwent heavy repairs and alterations to his design in order to make him even more capable of beating Godzilla. Due to the amount of power that the Absolute Zero Cannon uses, it was replaced with a triple Hyper Maser Cannon. Other modifications were made to the Modified Type-3 Kiryu as well, including a collapsible drill installed in his hand. After a year of modifications, the Modified Type-3 Kiryu was completed, and would subsequently prove to be the more deadly version of the original Kiryu. It stands at 60 meters and weighs 36000 tons.

Dragonzord

The Dragonzord is a powerful machine, but like all Zords, it’s dependant on both solar power and its connection to the Morphin’ Grid. Enough raw power will end up severing this connection to the Morphin’ Grid or flat out destroying it, though the Dragonzord itself has never canonically been destroyed.

Besides that, the Dragonzord still needs Tommy’s input in order to properly use it, like all Zords. It can function without him, but it will usually just end up flailing around as a result. Speaking of Tommy, enough damage to him can also sever his connection to the Morphin’ Grid and leave him as just a man. Tommy himself actually lost his Green Ranger powers twice in canon, once due to the Green Candle which Rita had made specifically for that purpose, and again after he had lost the power boost given to him by Zordon and his fellow rangers.

MechaGodzilla

Whenever the second Godzilla roared out in pain, there were instances where Kiryu’s Godzilla side would take over and override all external control, causing it to go berserk until it ran out of power, so there is no denying the possibility of Kiryu going berserk if the chips are not in its favour.

Due to its limited power reserves, Kiryu can only be in action for about two hours, depending on its level of activity or when the use of the Absolute Zero Cannon is involved. Furthermore, the few seconds needed for Kiryu to charge up the Absolute Zero Cannon might leave it open to an attack from its opponent unless Kiryu grabs them and fires it point-blank. If it is unable to finish off its adversary in time, it will be left open and vulnerable.

Summary

Dragonzord

  • Anime MechaGodzilla exists

Verdicts

Malcolm Belmont

Sooo before we get started here i have one thing to say:

Seriously, it's easily one of the best anime this year by Studio WIT. Trust me you won’t be disappointed. With that Shilling out of the way, hey it’s ya boy MalcolmBelmont here, what’s up in this schindizzle “cough” not doing that again. Anyway, while I am not as excited for this matchup as some of my compatriots but considering Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was my jam along with the holy trinity of Pokemon,Yugioh and Beyblade. I would say that I have quite a history with MMPR though not as much for Godzilla but i did watch the Kiryu trilogy and enjoy them very much. Enough rambling though, let’s get into the bangers and mash of this verdict - who wins between MMPR’s Dragonzord and Godzilla’s Mechagodzilla. The Battle of the Giant Dragon Robots..

Before i go over stats there is something i need to address, using Boom Comics in a Power Rangers fight. Don’t get me wrong here - the Boom Comics are great (Beyond the Grid was kinda meh though) and I fully recommend you read them...however, i am not fully on board with using them on a Power Rangers DEATH BATTLE. The reason why is that the Boom Comics while based on the show are clearly a different continuity from the sure. It’s likely the 1969 Rangers never existed, Shattered Grid likely never happened in the main show continuity. Boom Comics’s Lore as well as the events that play out in it completely contradict Power Rangers the tv show (though to be fair to Boom Comics - PR has never been able to keep their lore all that straight leither). While for this blog we will be compositing - aka using comic book feats i still think it’s extremely dubious that Boom Comics and one certain feat that we will be getting into later being the deciding factor of this fight. Personally speaking, I treat Boom Comics PR as the same as Archie Sonic - fun read and great stories but also a completely different continuity to the show and thus shouldn’t be focused on in a DEATH BATTLE. I doubt everyone is going to agree with me on this but this is just my thoughts and opinions.

In terms of Dragonzord, this is a bit tricky - I have seen some people argue that the Dragonzord should scale to Serpentera which is established in the show to be a Planet Buster. However, I find that dubious at best for a couple of reasons - the first being that Dragonzord has never actually fought or really interacted much with Serpentera in canon or not at all. Secondly, yes while at Sepentera’s maximum - it could definitely destroy a planet, it’s usually not that powerful. During its fight with the Thunder Megazord - Serpentra was barley at its peak strength yet was still able to defeat the Thunder Megazord easily. Considering the Dinozords and the Dragonzord have been stated to be inferior to the Thunder Megazord in show is why i would not scale the Dragonzord to Serperentera.

Anyway with that out of the way, how about we take a look at feats from the comics and the Boom Comics - yes I said I wasn't 100% okay with DEATH BATTLE focusing on using Boom Comics but we might as well mention it. Dragonzord at the very least should be mountain level considering it’s fight against the Megazord, it was easily able to destroy a major part of a Mountain after getting thrown into it though depending on how high the Mountain is - you could make an argument that this feat would only come out to Town but let’s give him the benefit of the doubt and say that the Dragonzord is Mountain Level (he should at least be stronger then City level considering he wrecked a City). Now let’s talk Boom Comics - well the Dragonzord fought the Black Dragon whom it’s implied by the comics that the Black Dragon destroys the rest of the Dinozords single handedly. Though it should be noted that the Dragonzord barely managed to keep up with the Black Dragon and eventually then Dragonzord was defeated. Considering it’s implied in the comics that the Black Dragon is a custom made Dragonzord - I would put it at Mountain Level as well. As for the second feat, oh boy this is the big feat - Dragonzord has fought the Megazord and should scale to the Megazord’s Tank Mode, which dealt significant damage to Alpha-1 in the comics. Alpha-1 managed to barely survive a moon-busting explosion. To me, this feat is one of the potential deciding factors of the fight and could lead to this fight going to the Dragonzord depending on how they interpret it. I could be completely wrong on this but i do not think Alpha 01 was in the middle of the explosion, seems to me like he noticed what was going to happen and escaping but the explosion has too wide a radius which let to him barely surviving. I do not thing he tanked the full blast of the Moon Busting explosion. Even if we give him the benefit of the doubt and say he did - we do not know how large the Prillon 12 Moon was which could lead to very different results depending on how large it actually is. Anyway, if we accept this feat then the Megazord should be Moon Level considering it hurt Alpha 1 who survived a moon busting explosion and thus the Dragonzord should also be Moon level (it should be noted that Billy states Alpha survived a Planetary Supernova and if we take Billy’s word for it - it should put Alpha at Planet Level but that’s dubious). So overall for the Dragonzord - if we go by the TV Show then he would like be City to Mountain Level and in the comics he would likely be Moon Level.

Now, let’s talk about MegaGodzilla aka Kiryu. Well in terms of destructive feats. We know that it's rockets & missiles can destroy multi-storey buildings quite easily. As well as one of it’s most powerful weapons - Absolute zero cannon was capable of flash freezing multiple skyscrapers into shattered rubble. Thanks to the people at VS Battle Wiki - this feat came out at  546.22 TeraTons - this would put MechaGodzilla on the high level of Large Country Level since in order for a character to reach Large Country - the attack potency would have to be between 100 Teratons to 760 Teratons. This Large Country feat puts MechaGodzilla higher then anything that Dragonzord has currently demonstrated in the show, even with scaling to the Megazord. So in the movies - Kiryu/Dragonzord is at the very least Large Country level - so what about the comics? Yes we are using them. Considering while the Comics certainly do their own things - they also has several characters from different parts of the Godzilla franchise (as well as different Timelines) come into. In the comics - MechaGodzilla was able to kill Gigan who matched Final Wars Godzilla. Considering Final Wars Godzilla was able to defeat Monster Zero’s Meteor Form who was able to do Island Levels of Damage. Which means that MechaGodzilla in the comics should at least be Island level from scaling to Gigan. But that’s not even the two biggest things. In the comics - MechaGodzilla was able to match SpaceGodzilla and significantly hurt him with the Absolute Zero Cannon. Space-Godzilla is clearly established in the movies to be a Planet Buster. He was stated by the Cosmos twins to have destroyed planets in his journey to Earth in the manga adaptation of the film and in the movies, was shown to be able to destroy Earth by them again in the movie. While MechaGodzilla didn’t defeat SpaceGodzilla in the comics - he certainly scales to him which puts him at Large Planet Level. This is backed up by the fact in the comics with Jet Jaguar as the pilot. He was able to destroy  Destoryah who could damage a Planet level Burning Godzilla (aka the strongest version of Heisei Godzilla) as he approached critical point, indicating that he is Heisei Godzilla’s most powerful opponent, beyond the likes of even SpaceGodzilla. So in the end, if we go by the movies, then MechaGodzilla is Large Country Level and in the comics, he is Planet Level.

So at the end of the day, I think MechaGodzilla has this in the Show/Movies and the Comics in terms of Destructive Capability. Of course there are also other factors to consider - which i am going to go into.

Speed, unlike Destructive Capability is extremely easy to determine. For Dragonzord we know that Dragonzord is at the very least 140 km/h but it’s likely much faster then that considering it flew to the moon in the Boom Comics: (). For MechaGodzilla, we can easily find out his reaction speed based on the fact that he dodged a blast from Godzilla. One of the Atomic Breaths that Godzilla was calculated at Mach 9.64 or Hypersonic. In order to dodge that blast from that range - it came out to Mach 4 - we can scale his reaction speed to his combat speed which puts him about Mach 4 or Supersonic+. Not bad..Overall i would say that Dragonzord has the slight edge when it comes to speed so point to Dragonzord.

Durability is fairly easy to figure out as well since we can scale their Destructive Capability to their Durability but for the sake of expansion - let’s go into detail about which one has the better durability. Dinozord survived getting picked up and thrown through a mountain by the Megazord (this feat should put both Dinozord and the Megazord at Mountain Level) and has straight up tanked hits from the Megazord. Though it has its limits in terms of durability - see when the Black Dragon was easily able to rip it’s cockpit.  In the Boom Comics - you could also scale the Dragonzord, who has tanked attacks from the Megazord who defeated a Moon Busting Alpha 5. This puts comic Dragonzord about moon level. As for MechaGodzilla, he has tanked a few atomic breaths from Godzilla which would put his durability at Large Country level in the movies as well as in the comics tanked attacks from Ghidorah's gravity beams and Gigan’s charge slashes. He has has also tanked attacks from Heisei Godzilla and Space-Godzilla in the comics with Space-Godzilla being a confirmed planet buster. All in all, I would say that in terms of durability - Megazord is Mountain Level in the show and Moon Level in the Comics while MechaGodzilla is Large Country level in the movies and in the comics he is planet. So point goes to MechaGodzilla.

So Dragonzord has speed while MechaGodzilla has Destructive Capability so what about their Weapons and Arsenal. Well you might have already figured out based on reading the blog but MechaGodzilla easily has the best Weapons and general aresenel. One of the main weaknesses of the Dragonzord is frankly his pitiful arsenal - there’s his finger missiles, drill tail, energy fin and the Power Staff for the Dragonzord Battle Mode and that’s pretty much yeah. A lot of the classic Power Ranger Zords really didn’t have much to them in terms of arnesels and Dragonzord is sadly no exception to this. It really lacks variety and anything uber powerful - compared to the MechaGodzilla who has a much larger arsenal for days.

First we of course we have the Absolute Zero Cannon which is an instant KO on Dragonzord if it hits (due to the fact that it instantly freezes them). But that’s far from the only thing that MechaGodzilla has against Dragonzord. MechaGodzilla has the Triple Hyper Master Cannon that is strong enough to hurt Millennium Godzilla and caused him significant pain, there’s the flight pack that allows him unlimited flight in the air, the Master Blade which is an electrified blade which is strong enough to hurt Godzilla, many many different rockets and missiles, drill fingers that can drill into an enemy target, laser cannons, wire, rocket powered punches, a red shield, etc. Basically MechaGodzilla has a much more destructive arsenal then Dragonzord and have many things that could specifically counter the Dragonzord - for example the wire that can be used to tie up the Dragonzord. MechaGodzilla just has many, many more options in close range and long range combat so it terms of weapons - MechaGodzilla easily surpasses the Dragonzord.

Now let’s talk about their pilots - Tommy Oliver and Akane Yasuhiro and which one has the more training, experience, intelligence and overall fighting capability. It terms of actual experience - Tommy Oliver is superior to Akane in many areas - Akane has EXTREMELY limited experience in the MechaGodzilla as it’s pilots while Tommy Oliver fought several giant monsters summoned by Rita. He should have more experience when it comes to outside of their cockpits considering Tommy’s main battles over the years as the Green Ranger and even further on (he is the character with the most appearances on the show). However, if we are just talking about formal training experience then Akane is superior to Tommy. Tommy is a great martial artist don’t get me wrong but he has never had any formal training to the extent that Akane has who was indeed a soldier. I would argue that Akane is more intelligent then Green Ranger Tommy (maybe not Black Dino Thunder Ranger Tommy) considering how formal training and throughout Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla she shows great insight and knowledge in how to maneuver through Godzilla’s attacks and counter them and there’s another aspect of Akane to consider - her reckless and often suicidal tendies. Akane as a person doesn’t have a lot of confidence in herself and due to the guilt of having caused her teamates’s deaths - she has no fear in killing herself in order to get the win - as shown when Akane uses the Absolute Zero Cannon on Godzilla in close range - likely knowing that the blast would mostly likely kill. While this reckless and often suicidal nature is not good for Akane mentally - in terms of her fight, her absolute drive to win at all costs even if it costs her own life means she will be much more willing to end the fight as quickly as possible (especially considering MechaGodzilla runs on a time limit). So she’s likely going to go straight in and try to overpower Tommy as quickly as possible. So i think as pilots they are fairly equal with Tommy eclipsing Akane when it comes to experience but Akane’s formal training experience and reckless attitude could help MechaGodzilla out more than Tommy’s experience.

So in conclusion if I haven't made it clear already - I think MechaGodzilla has this. While Dragonzord likely has superior speed and Tommy has better experience. MechaGodzilla has the strength, durability and the superior weapons and arsenal to defeat Dragonzord - Dragonzord really doesn’t have the means to finish off MechaGodzilla before MechaGodzilla uses its Absolute Zero Cannon to destroy the Dragonzord in one hit. I do think this fight is close and I could see DEATH BATTLE going either way depending on how they use Boom Power Rangers and interpret certain feats but for my money I am leaning towards the team of Akane and MechaGodzilla. Looks like the Dragonzord is about to go extinct.

VampyreNVRmore

Once again, I’m happy to be back on the blog. And here, we have a matchup between two franchises that I’m fond of. While I’m not a hardcore fan, I have watched old seasons of Power Rangers when I was younger. When it comes to the Godzilla franchise, I love the original 1954 movie as well as movies from the Heisei, Millennium, and Reiwa eras. As a result, I joined when the fight was announced on Rooster Teeth’s upload of Ghost Rider vs Lobo.

Speaking of Ghost Rider vs Lobo, if you thought that matchup was difficult in deciding a winner, then you’re not prepared for Dragonzord vs Mechagodzilla. Correction: Dragonzord vs Kiryu. Now on paper, it does seem to look that Kiryu has the edge in power and durability while the Dragonzord has the edge in speed. However, the matchup is more than meets the eye when you examine the full details.

When it comes to strength, Kiryu has fought Godzilla multiple times over the course of two movies. As for the Dragonzord, it fought the Megazord and monsters constantly sent by Lord Zedd and Rita Repulsa. Sounds simple, right? Nope. Enter the comics. Not only has Kiryu fought Godzilla in the comics, it also fought other planet-busting Kaiju such as Gigan, Space Godzilla, King Ghidorah, and Destoroyah. As a result, Kiryu scales to those monsters. For the Dragonzord, it’s portrayed as the Megazord’s equal. The Megazord was able to significantly damage Alpha-1, a robot that survived a moon-busting explosion.

For speed, Kiryu could move at supersonic as he was able to tag fighter jets and dodge Godzilla’s Atomic Breath. When it comes to the Dragonzord, its speed requires a bit more explanation. In Season 2 of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Lord Zedd would drop grenades from the Moon to the Earth. Some of his monsters would catch them, putting them at having relativistic speeds. The Dragonzord is able to fight these monsters and land hits on them, putting it at the same speed as Zedd’s monsters. What do the comics bring? Well, as I mentioned before, Kiryu has fought King Ghidorah and Gigan. Both of these kaiju flew from Jupiter to Earth in a span of a few years. In the Power Ranger comics, the Dragonzord flew to the Moon in a short amount of time. This feat is supported by the fact that the Megazord had a similar speed feat in an MMPR game.

Finally, there’s durability. When it comes to this category, the two combatants get their feats from mostly how well they tanked their opponents. In the two movies that it has appeared in, Kiryu was able to take hits from Godzilla. In the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers TV show, the Dragonzord take hits from the Megazord. In the Godzilla comics, Kiryu was able to tank attacks from other kaiju such as King Ghidorah and Gigan. In the Power Ranger comics, the Dragonzord tanked being launched into lunar orbit.

Now, you may be realizing that this matchup is a lot closer than before. That’s true, and you can thank the comics of both franchises for that. However, what truly makes this matchup difficult to decide a winner on is whether or not to include these comic feats. For Kiryu’s comic feats, they took place in various Godzilla comics with each having a different continuity. For Dragonzord’s comic feats, they took place in the Boom Comics (which some people think is similar to Archie Sonic, but it’s actually not).

One can simply say that to decide the winner, all you need to do is just focus only on the source materials since that’s how Death Battle does research nowadays. However, other media is included as long as it doesn’t contradict the source material. And that’s the case with the comics of both franchises. Neither contradicts their source materials. The characters possess the same personality and abilities as their original counterparts. Therefore, I don’t think the comics should be disregarded, but I can understand why some people believe otherwise.

Now you may have noticed that I haven’t talked about their arsenal. Both have a variety of weapons at their disposal, but Kiryu’s weapons have a lot more destructive capability than the Dragonzord’s weapons. It really comes down to two things: Kiryu’s Absolute Zero Cannon and the Dragonzord’s Projectile Reflector. As explained above, the Absolute Zero Cannon can one-shot the Dragonzord and finish the match quickly. However, it requires 40% of Kiryu’s energy and is used as a last resort weapon.

This leads to something else that’s also unfortunate for Millennium’s Mechagodzilla. It can only operate up to 2 hours before it runs out of power and shuts down. Since it doesn’t have such a limit due to being solar powered, the Dragonzord can simply use its superior speed to dodge Kiryu’s attacks until the Mechagodzilla runs out of power. And using the Absolute Zero Cannon would just drain Kiryu’s power quicker. Now I mentioned the Dragonzord’s Projectile Reflector above. While I’m not sure if Death Battle will actually add it as part of the Dragonzord’s arsenal, I do believe it could help Dragonzord win this matchup. Should Kiryu use the Absolute Zero Cannon, the Dragonzord can simply use the Projectile Reflector to send it back towards the Mechagodzilla and destroy it as a result.

Despite everything I said, I do find it difficult in choosing a winner. However, after some careful thinking, I’ll have to go with the Dragonzord. I believe that the Dragonzord’s superior speed will allow it to take less damage from Kiryu and drag out the fight. This will cause Kiryu to continuously lose power and force Akane to use the Absolute Zero Cannon as a last ditch attempt to finish the match before Kiryu runs out of power. However, the Dragonzord will be fast enough to react to the attack and will activate the Projectile Reflector, sending the deadly attack back towards Kiryu and giving Tommy Oliver the victory. It looks like Kiryu’s chances at winning dropped to Absolute Zero.

Firstly, I would like to thank the team for giving me the opportunity to help with another one of their blogs. Haven’t done one of these since 2017 when Megazord VS Voltron was a thing. Secondly, it was interesting doing the research for this fight. I’m sure most of us were not expecting this fight to be as debatable as it turned out to be.

Regardless, here’s my take on it. While the Dragonzord has the speed and experience department, Kiryu has the clear advantage in weaponry, strength and durability. Furthermore, Kiryu is OVER 250 TIMES heavier than the Dragonzord. Kiryu definitely takes in in the power department and has shown much greater durability and destructive feats than the Dragonzord. While an argument can be made that the Dragonzord could just blitz or wear down Kiryu until it runs out of energy, I don’t think that’s gonna happen for a few reasons:

1. Tommy has no idea about Kiryu’s limited energy reserves. He would fight Kiryu like how he does every other monster a.k.a try to end the fight fast
2. The fights which the Dragonzord has had always ended up being close range or hand-to-hand. Sure, Dragonzord could play keep away for a while but its ranged weapons wouldn’t do much damage to Kiryu. Tommy would then be forced to take the fight to close range if he wanted to actually win like most of his fights with other giant monsters.
3. Akane is not an idiot. If she sees that Kiryu is running out of energy, she would want to end the fight fast and not drag it any longer like what she did against Godzilla. Akane has two AZC shots max. She might miss the first shot and then come up with a strategy to make sure she lands the second (similar to how her fight with Godzilla played out). When it eventually comes down to a melee fight, Kiryu could simply grab the Dragonzord and fire the AZC point blank to win the fight or trap the Dragonzord with one of its cables to immobilize it, giving Kiryu time to charge the cannon. Either way, Akane has quite a few options when it comes to landing that important one-hit kill.

However, it ultimately depends on the feats and media that Death Battle chooses for this fight. If the Dragonzord gets the benefit of high end comic feats and scaling while Kiryu does not, I could see the fight going in the Dragonzord’s favour. If they decided to consider every media the two have been in or purely just look at feats from the show and films, I think the fight would go in Kiryu’s favour. In the end though, my vote goes to Kiryu. Its massive strength, durability and arsenal advantage should give it the win pretty convincingly. Looks like the Dragonzord is about to be KirOed.

Not gonna lie, never expected that I’d ever be on one of these blogs, and I really never would have guessed this would be the matchup I’d help with if I did. Huge thanks to the G1DBFB guys for having me on though! Here’s hoping I don’t sound stupid!
Anyway, Dragonzord vs MechaGodzilla! Quality matchup, first of all. Gonna be cool. But who wins it?
Well, let’s start with the meat and potatoes of any vs debate: stats. Now, Power Rangers stats are pretty widely disagreed upon, with many different interpretations ranging from city to planet, so it should be no surprise that there’s been a lot of disagreements on where exactly the Dragonzord lands. But what did come as kind of a surprise is that there are also a number of complications regarding Kiryu’s stats, to the point where, in my opinion, Dragonzord is actually more clear-cut.
So, let’s start with Dragonzord.
Right off the bat, it’s easy to say that it’s on par with the Dino Megazord. They fight alongside one another all the time, and while there may be some minor differences between the two of them, they generally fare similarly against the enemies they face. Additionally, as Death Battle has already noted in Dragonzord’s preview, it has even proven itself capable of destroying a cocoon that the Megazord could not. This means that the Dragonzord should easily be comparable to the Megazord and far superior to its individual components, including the Pterodactyl Zord, which lives inside an active volcano. While volcanic activity tends to vary in energy output, eruptions usually at least fall somewhere in the megatons (city level), so it’s safe to say Dragonzord scales well above that.
How far above? Well, in the show, the best feat that I feel comfortable scaling it to is Rita destroying the Island of Illusion, which was calculated at 93 teratons based on the fact that the mountains on the island were large enough to have snow caps.  Dragonzord should likely scale to Rita’s magical power, as it has proven capable of physically muscling through magic restraints that she conjured to try and keep it out of commission. During our prior debates, I’ve seen this scaling contended on the grounds that it requires the assumption that Rita was applying equal levels of magical power in both instances, but I ultimately don’t think I agree with that stance. Rita had no reason to hold back when restraining the Dragonzord, since her plan’s success hinged on it remaining out of commission, and it’s not like she had to put in an immense amount of effort to bust the island. So, 93 teratons, in my opinion, is relatively fair.
Well, for the show that is. In the comics (which we know are being included), Dragonzord should scale to the Megazord, which was able to cause severe damage to Alpha-1, who, in the past, was able to (barely) survive a moon-busting explosion. Now, this feat has yet to be calc’d, and moon busting feats often vary a lot (essentially it depends on how fast the matter was blown apart), but it’s reasonable to say that the explosion must have at least been greater than our moon’s gravitational binding energy: 1.2 x 10^29 Joules, or nearly 30 exatons of TNT. That’s - surprise, surprise - moon level.
Speedwise, Dragonzord can fly to the moon in an unknown timeframe, requiring at least mach 33 flight speed (escape velocity), and potentially scales to season 2 monsters-of-the-week, many of whom can catch the grenade that Lord Zedd throws from the moon to the Earth in seconds (16:00). Even estimating conservatively, this would come out to a respectable fraction of the speed of light. I’ve seen it postulated that Zedd could have teleported it offscreen, but that seems pretty dubious. Nothing indicates that, for one, and if he could just teleport the grenade, then why would he even bother throwing it to begin with? All-in-all, I feel pretty comfortable rating Dragonzord’s reaction speed at relativistic.
Regarding some notable feats that I’m less agreeable on: Rita has a feat of causing a solar eclipse, which some consider to be large planet level. However, it was never actually specified that she did it by moving the moon, and assuming such a thing would place it FAR above any other feat in the show, so it’s likely an outlier anyway. I’ve seen some try to support it by scaling to feats from other Rangers eras, but I’m pretty lukewarm on that idea. 93 teratons is more believable, and relatively consistent with another feat that got 666 gigatons. There are also a handful of feats that are seen as MFTL+ on some sites, but most of them don’t really hold water in my opinion. A bunch of mooks being shown fighting as a MFTL wave washes over them shouldn’t count as moving in tandem with it, for instance.
Alright, on to Kiryu.
Starting with AP and durability, considering his performance against Godzilla, the fact that he can withstand his atomic breath, etc., Kiryu should easily scale to the original Godzilla, who has a feat of vaporizing 150 million tons of salt water. This requires energy output equal to 11 megatons of TNT, and Kiryu can take these attacks and keep on going.
But that’s small stuff compared to what he can do with the Absolute Zero Cannon, his strongest weapon. With it, he once atomized multiple large skyscrapers. Blasting apart that much matter on an atomic level requires an absurd amount of energy, equaling 546.22 teratons of TNT. Since both Kiryu and Godzilla survived the cannon going off point blank when they were sandwiched together, albeit with damage, their physical durability should scale to around that level (as should their respective attack potencies, as they’re capable of damaging one another).
Personally, however, I am somewhat unsure that the cannon should scale to physical capability, as it came across more as hax than power to me. After having a couple of discussions about it, I can generally understand the idea that the fact that they were able to tank it could mean that it can apply to durability, and thus justify the scaling, but I’m still skeptical on it. However, for the sake of this prediction, I’m going to go along with it and assume movie Kiryu is large country level.
However, the comics may or may not be a different and more impressive story. At the end of Godzilla: Half-Century War, in the battle between Kiryu, Godzilla, King Ghidorah, and Gigan, the military fires off the Dimension Tide, essentially dropping a black hole on top of the four of them. Ghidorah and Gigan are caught in it, and while Godzilla is not immediately sucked in, Kiryu pushes him into it, sacrificing itself to destroy him. But while Kiryu is destroyed by it, it’s revealed at the end of the comic that Godzilla actually survived.
Based on the size of the black hole, its energy output is potentially in the solar system level range. Since Kiryu was fighting Godzilla before the Dimension Tide went off, and was even strong enough to force him into it, he should scale to the black hole’s energy, right? Welllll…honestly, I don’t know about that. Even setting aside the fact that we’re talking about scaling Kiryu to something that literally killed him, a serious issue in its own right, Godzilla was the ONLY one of the four who was revealed to be alive at the end of the comic. Not even Ghidorah survived, and he’s pretty on par with Big G. Considering this, I find it far more likely that Godzilla was able to survive due to his healing factor, not his durability. As far as I know, there aren’t really any other solar system level feats in that continuity to make that level of power believable, either. However, it is possible to argue that he would scale.
I’ve also seen the argument that he scales to planet/large planet level feats from other movie continuities due to harming SpaceGodzilla and Destoroyah in the comics, but I’m pretty skeptical on that. It requires the assumption that SG and Destoroyah are just as strong in the comics as they are in the movies, which isn’t an assumption you can just make. If they have planet level feats in that comic continuity, then yeah it would probably be legit, but I have yet to see evidence of that.
Speedwise, Kiryu surprisingly doesn’t have any super ridiculous speed feats. His best feat in the movies is dodging Godzilla’s heat breath, which was calculated here to be mach 4. (Btw, the calc in question is stacked, but any small distinction I could make there would be ultimately meaningless.) The comics could possibly bump him up by a bit, scaling off of an interplanetary flight feat from Ghidorah and Gigan that took place over the course of several years. At best, this got around mach 30 when I calc’d it (though I did highball a bit), nothing crazy.
So now that I’ve written a fat essay on how strong these two fictional metal lizards are, how do these stats compare?
Let’s start by comparing show Dragonzord to movie Kiryu.
Giving Kiryu the benefit of the doubt and applying its Absolute Zero Cannon to its physical strength and durability, Kiryu would be 5.87 times stronger and more durable than Dragonzord (546.22 teratons vs 93 teratons), while Dragonzord would be roughly 46700 times faster (0.21c vs mach 4). Both have their advantages, but I would say that’s a pretty solid win for Dragonzord. Kiryu would pretty much never be able to land a hit with that level of a speed gap, and a 6-ish times strength difference is hardly insurmountable, especially with Kiryu’s very limited power. In my opinion, Dragonzord would be able to wear him down and score a victory with moderate difficulty.
But then comics come in and make everything more complicated. Dragonzord shoots up to being solidly at least moon level, scaling from the Megazord busting up Alpha-1, but Kiryu is FAR less easy to scale. Comics vs comics essentially entirely comes down to how you interpret the black hole feat. If Kiryu gets it, he wins by a ton. If not, he loses by a ton. And we know DB is using comics for both, so it’s not like I can just ignore it.
Essentially, I believe that the fight could easily go either way depending on what you believe. At both fighters’ highest interpretation, Kiryu would definitely take the victory. However, Dragonzord’s feats and scaling are far more straightforward and have far fewer potential caveats than Kiryu’s do (AZC might be hax, black hole feat might not scale, etc.).
Because of this, while I’m not confident at all, I ultimately feel much more comfortable siding with Dragonzord to win. Kiryu stands a fantastic chance, but the debatable nature of his feats leaves him feeling like a much riskier pick to me. The AZC could oneshot regardless of what you believe for Dragonzord (since IMO it’s hax), but with the speed difference and its substantial charge-up time, there’s little chance that Kiryu could land it.
Which kinda brings me to the final part of this: peripheral advantages outside of stats.
Kiryu has way more versatile weaponry. This is blatantly obvious; all you have to do is count how many toys each of them has. Issue is, it doesn’t matter much if he can’t land them.
Kiryu is much heavier, but a weight advantage doesn’t make his feats any better or worse than they are. His AP, dura, and speed would be just as high as his feats indicate regardless of how heavy he is, and the same goes for Dragonzord.
Tommy is a much more experienced pilot than Akane. Even limiting his experience to his tenure as the Green Ranger, he’s still fought in dozens of battles, whereas Akane has literally only piloted Kiryu twice, for a couple hours each time. I’ve seen it argued that Akane is more well-trained than Tommy is, but while that’s probably technically true, the fact that she was retired from being Kiryu’s pilot because she got sent away for tactical instruction leaves me wondering how thorough her military training really was. Her tendency for recklessness doesn’t help her much either.
Kiryu’s limited energy reserves are going to be a major weakness. He can only use the AZC twice, and even outside of it, his other weapons burn through his reserves at a rapid pace. Since it’s pretty unlikely that the military’s gonna be there to reroute the entire city of Tokyo to recharge him like they did in his first movie, he’s in a pretty bad position.
Tl;dr: If you scale Kiryu to the black hole in the comics, he wins. If not, which I think is safer, the Dragonzord should likely take the W.
So I think that about wraps things up! Hopefully I can help with another one of these in the future, this was super fun to do.
Here’s hoping I didn’t sound stupid.

First I’d like to thank the crew for inviting me on here to give an unofficial official opinion. I’m absolutely down for Galactus versus Unicron by the way.

I’m not going to pretend to be an expert on Mechagodzilla 3 as Millennium is my least favorite era of the Godzilla franchise. Nothing against it, just remember the prior gens more fondly as I stayed up late into the morning to watch bad Godzilla dubs on SciFi. It was also the same time of my life Power Rangers was king on tv and in the toy store.

I’m going to start by saying Power Rangers weights make no sense for their size and this is perfectly demonstrated by the fact that Goldar goes from 250 lbs normally at 6’ to... 12,000 lb or 6 tons at 280’???

Anyway I give MG credit for having a varied arsenal, having a more classically trainee military pilot and even scaling from the original 50’s Godzilla a casual city-busting level of power. I am not an expert on the comics beyond Dark Horse but I don’t know how to interpret a millennium era Mechagodzilla interacting with Hessei era villains outside of their original cabins and timelines. That’s also why I primarily would prefer to limit my discussion of Power Rangers to original content from the 90’s. That being said, if comics aren’t a factor there is scaling to put MMPR Zords above Mechagodzilla.
“After Lord Zedd froze Trini’s Saber Tooth Tiger Dinozord, Zordon gave her the even strong Griffin Thunderzord. The legendary creature, with the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion, is swift and accurate like Trini. In battle, it can shoot a tremendous energy blast from its mouth capable of disintegrating an entire mountain!”

If we cross reference the numbers of the power ratings for the Zordon era zords we see that the Dragonzord has an output of 39,000 megavolts, the Megazord 50,000, the Tigerzord 75,000, and the Thunder Megazord 100,000 megavolts making the Thunder Megazord exactly twice as powerful as the original and the Tigerzord slightly less than twice as powerful than Dragonzord.

The Thunderzords are thus twice as powerful as their Dinozord counterparts.  Is it conceivable that the Dragonzord is not at least twice as powerful than the Sabertooth Tiger? If so then the Dragonzord should be on par with the Sabertooth’s successor the Griffin Thunderzord which can vaporize entire mountains with energy blasts. And keep in mind that the Griffin is shown in combat to fire several of these blasts concurrently meaning that the Griffin and by scaling the Dragonzord has this mountain-busting power casually.
This is not an outlier. In their first fight the Megazord literally threw the Dragonzord through a mountain. Not only did the Dragonzord tank this physical attack but it endured a severe beating from the Megazord. Dragonzord was fine after the Green Ranger called to it with the Dragon Dagger.

We also know that the Dinozords individually are more durable and tough than their odd weight ratings would lead us to believe. The Pterodactyl resides within a volcano. The Tyrannosaurus resides within the earth and breaks out whenever it’s summoned. The Dragonzord resides at the bottom of the sea. The Dragonzord is also officially more powerful than any if the individual five Dinozords including the Tyrannosaurus which can split the ground with its sonic mouth blast. Titanus, the mightiest Zord with a power rating in the gigavolts as opposed to megavolts, literally drives through mountains casually whenever it’s power or the Ultrazord are needed. None of these require comic feats, statements or stats. This is barebone.

Capping the Zords at a few hundred tons in strength or durability because of their weight without the context of their feats is like limiting the Hulk to 100 tons strength because of old guidebooks. In practice they all would fit in within your typical kaiju film, which is part of the appeal of matching Dragonzord with Mechagodzilla anyway.

The disparity between MG and DZ in terms of strength and durability, largely in favor of MG according to most, does not exist when properly analyzing the context of Power Rangers/Sentai media.

Another thing to consider is the escalation of power from combination. 39,000 megavolts to 50,000 megavolts is a difference of 1.28x between the Dragonzord and Megazord. However, according to the Zyuranger supplementary video the final attack of Zyutei Daizyujin aka Mega Dragonzord (that green Z shaped attack) has a power rating 10x that of Dragon Caesar aka Dragonzord. Knowing that the Dragonzord is more powerful than the other main 5 Dinozords and the context to which Dragonzord Battle Mode is utilizes it’s safe to say that the gap in power between Dragonzord and Dragonzord Battle Mode is more than 1.28x but obviously lower than the 10x of Mega Dragonzord. Neither Sentai nor Power Rangers fully fleshed this out, the former because the Zords are fragments of literal God that get stronger from reuniting I guess and the latter because Bandai cared more about selling a show and toys than quality writing. That being said, what few numbers and statements we have to draw on for scaling indicate that the combinations of the Megazord or its components with Dragonzord and/or Titanus result in not a simple addition of power but rather an exponential growth. Somewhere between 1.28x and 10x lies the multiplier for Dragonzord Battle Mode.

Here’s something that’d be neat. MG charges up its ultimate weapon for the kill, Tommy manages to dance away. Upon seeing the devastating power of this beam Tommy uses MG’s charge time to call the Zords to form Battle Mode. At the last second Tommy, using the Mastodon Shield, reflects the attack straight at Mechagodzilla’s cockpit killing its pilot. Tommy summons all the power of DZBM into its Power Drill staff and drills right through MG. KO.
Anyway here’s my verdict. If comic feats are taken to their extreme interpretation then Mechagodzilla 3 is potentially planet to star level and nothing Dragonzord can do would scratch him. On the other hand, if we stay more on the side of consistent canon and supportive evidence I believe that Dragonzord will win.

So. I believe Death Battle will include comics and draw whatever conclusions they can from its official weight, weaponry and comic encounters with cross-canon world killers. Meaning Mechagodzilla probably will win. However, I believe Dragonzord probably should win.

Showzilla

Alright, let’s see with wins, the third generation to the mechaG dynasty or the rip off of the family identity. So, I’m not gonna bore you with the numbers because my companions have already laid them out before you, so we’ll just roll with these assumptions: DZ show is mountain level while DZ comics is about moon level with relativistic speed and Kiryu ranged from high continent to high planet level with high hypersonic speed.
Now, lets break down the tactical options afforded to each of our combatants and see who wins in most of our scenarios. A game of trade licks, be it in melee or over distance, will see the dragon zord suffering this fate, with Jason making a good stand in for Kiryu

Yeah, one good hit and it’s all over. Now, if history is anything to consider, Tommy will quickly try to engage in a hand to hand battle, using his ranged attacks as more of an opening maneuver to allow him to get closer so he can beat the shit out of Kiryu, a strategy Kiryu would be all too happy to oblige. So Tommy rushes in, head first and…..gets decapitated, alright, we’re done here….oh wait, yeah, we’ve got more stuff to consider.

Alright, so , the DragonZord is much faster than Kiryu and could hypothetically dance around it for two or so hours until the mighty monster machine powers down, but this strategy relies on a few key factors: Overcoming the base durability of Kiryu, knowing about the time limit and the logistical nightmare of rolling the dice each time Kiryu attacks. First, if we low end them both….the DragonZord just doesn’t have enough oomph to hurt Kiryu but if we high end them both…..The DragonZord just doesn’t have enough oomph to hurt kiryu. Second, how the hell is Tommy gonna know about the major weakness in a foe he’s never met before? Is he an established Godzilla fan who’s seen and read all the media? Doubtful. Finally, everyone has mentioned the whole bob and weave idea of just waiting out the clock but they don’t take into account just how balls out insane it is to do that for TWO GODDAMN HOURS, lemme put that in perspective for you, if you started Watching Godzilla:KOTM (which you should) when the fight went down, you’d be in the credit sequence by the time Kiryu finally powers down, that’s a long time to play keep away and that requires the DragonZord go that long without taking so much as a glancing blow. Now, Kiryu could shorten that time by using the AZC, but after the first shot misses, Akane is not going to charge it up without a guarantee that it will land and she CAN guarantee it’ll connect with a quick bear hug. So, in summation, it seems Kiryu can just sit back and turtle, throw out a bit of suppressive fire to pin the DZ down and wait for the inevitable chance to throw hands.

Now, you can argue “what about speed?”let's be frank, without strength to overcome durability, even if it’s only enough to scratch the paint job, speed is USELESS. Ten thousand angry gnat headbutts will not drop an elephant, a thousand AR-15’s will not open a tank and DragonZord will not be able to punch a hole in Kiryu without some extreme bias in DZ’s favor.

Another advantage that exists but likely won’t matter is the pilots themselves.Tommy is gung-ho for a fist fight and the suicidal Akane will most likely rush headlong into the fight, which will make the fight end that much sooner.

So, summing things up, Tommy’s main strategy will play directly into Kiryu’s hands and the only strategies that could potentially give him a slight hope in hell have glaring hurdles that I doubt he can overcome. Giving this to Kiryu, the resurrected King, long may he reign.

Like many times in the past by now, I would like to thank once again the blog people to allow me to lend a hand in this fight.

MechaG vs DZord then huh ? I'm very, VERY, hyped, the second the fight was announced I completely lost my shit … but anyway, how does this fight go ?
As to not go way too far because you will probably see much better explanations here I will simply put it in the simplest terms possible:

Does Kiryu hit the DZord ? if yes then Kiryu wins
Does DZord stall Kiryu ? if so then DZord wins.

Who can do their win condition the best taking into account scaling, feats, movies/show and comic book continuities and even videogames ?

It’s complicated… aside from new abilities and a few scaling to higher enemies with planetary level feats then there isn’t a whole lot you can do, the main idea strangely keeps consistent however. Kiryu can one shot and gain space with its versatility but DZord tends to be faster.

Comparing both, as much as I would like to say to myself that DZord can easily blitz and that Tommy has more experience and what not, that isn’t really how these things go, experience hardly matters when you can get killed in one hit and cannot even hope to scratch your opponent. In the end, at least in my humble opinion, Since both characters seem so almost scaringly consistent between all of their media. Is that even with the DZord’s undoubtedly superior speed, the Kiryu is agile and durable enough to get the hit it needs, it has plenty of weapons to keep the DZord in place or distract it enough for Kiryu to deliver the final blow.

But tbf, its stupidly close, DZord can easily take it as well and that would totally be ok,

So final conclusion ?

Personal opinion: MechaG
VS wise: I don’t fucking know
DB wise: both can take it.

Brobuscus

Holy crap, man. Dragonzord VS MechaGodzilla?! In 3D?! Done by the Unreal team and some RWBY animators?! And Nicholas Andrew Louie is the voice of Tommy?!

As you can tell, I’m pretty hyped about this fight. Being done by the same team who did Optimus VS Gundam and being another mech fight,I have no reason to not be hyped for this. No matter what happens, I fully expect this fight to be freaking sick.

But, we’re not here to talk about how cool the fight’s gonna be, we’re here to talk about who wins it, so I say we just dive right in.

The advantages and disadvantages in this fight are pretty clear cut if you’ve been paying attention. The Dragonzord is faster, but Kiryu is stronger and tougher. On paper, this sounds really bad for the Dragonzord. But here’s the thing: the Dragonzord is WAAAAAAY faster. And the big thing about Kiryu that I think a lot of people either don’t know, don’t remember, or shrug to the side like it’s not important, is that Kiryu has a really limited power supply. It lasts a maximum of 2 hours normally. And this is without using any of it’s incredibly overpowered weapons, such as the Absolute Zero Cannon, which drains almost half of its power in one shot.

Sure, Kiryu could just bearhug Dragonzord and kill it with the AZC, but the problem doesn’t come from Dragonzord overpowering it, because that’s not happening. The problem comes from Kiryu catching Dragonzord in the first place. And that’s something I really don’t see happening. Especially since the Dragonzord isn’t on a limited power supply unlike Kiryu, so Tommy doesn’t need to worry about the Dragonzord running out of power or something like that.

I think it’s also important to look at the combat experience of the two pilots: Tommy Oliver and Akane Yashiro. At first glance, this may seem pretty unimportant, given that this is Dragonzord VS MechaGodzilla, not Dragonzord & Tommy VS MechaGodzilla & Akane. But since Tommy & Akane are the pilots and therefore have full control over the mechs(unless Kiryu goes berserk but I don’t really see that happening), I think it’s still relatively important to note. At another glance, Akane seems to have the advantage, given that she must’ve had at least some form of military training, while Tommy is a teenager in high school. But there’s actually more to that. Yes, Akane is in the military, but has it ever really been shown how much military experience she picked up? For all we know, it could’ve been a lot, or very little. As for Tommy, yeah he’s a high schooler, but he’s an experienced af high schooler. Look at all the crazy bs the Power Rangers have had to combat against, it’s ridiculous. So, I’d honestly give Tommy the experience edge.

Also if they were in a fist fight, Tommy would win easily, but that’s not really important right now.

Call it bias, or maybe even Devil’s Advocate, that probably has some effect on my decision making, but regardless, I’m honestly leaning towards the Dragonzord winning. Kiryu is much stronger and tougher, that’s undeniable. But with the Dragonzord’s greater speed, Tommy’s greater experience, and Kiryu’s limited power supply, all Tommy needs to do is play keep away long enough for Kiryu’s power to be drained. It’ll be tricky, but I think he can do it, leaving MechaGodzilla powerless for this ranger to get the win.

Wow, I’m here for...what is this, the fourth time this season? Yeah, I think so. Wait, yup, just counted it. MMBR, Ben vs. Hal, Johnny vs. Falcon, and now this fight. Geez, this is something. Anyway, this is quite an interesting fight we’ve got on our hands. On one hand, we have a fan favorite giant robot being piloted by a single man, while on the other hand, we have a fan favorite giant robot being piloted by a single woman. And while we were researching this fight, we found quite a few feats that make this a surprisingly close match depending on interpretation, and especially depending on which sources you use.

I’m going to assume, just like everyone else here, that any weapon we see them use is fair game, but only the main source and the comics are allowed (I mean, the video games both characters are in go against canon a lot, so I think that’s understandable if we treat them like we treat characters from Smash Bros.) So, here’s how I’m looking at things based on all the research

The Dragonzord has down the Speed advantage, has a much better energy source, and the far more experienced pilot, while Kiryu has down the Power and Durability advantages and has the far better trained pilot (at least in terms of piloting their respective machines). Kiryu also has an instant win button, but the power needed to use it and the charge-up time means that Kiryu has to either be extremely lucky, or have pretty much a point blank shot in order for it to work. So this begs the question that really needs to be answered: Can the Dragonzord last long enough in a fight that Kiryu’s power reaches 0. And in my opinion, the answer to that is...no.

Like I said before, this is an incredibly close fight, and if the Dragonzord could absolutely blitz Kiryu, I could see the hit-and-run tactic working very well. Tommy may not be one to use this tactic a lot, but if it was the only way to really work, he may try to employ it. But honestly...it doesn’t. Don’t get me wrong, the Dragonzord does still have the speed advantage, but the difference in speed is just too close for me to say that Dragonzord can get away with that kind of a strategy. Even just assuming Kiryu uses the AZC once, that’s all it really needs to do.

“But the Absolute Zero Cannon is risky. You just said it yourself” Yes, I did. But I also said that a point blank shot pretty much negates that risk. And, surprise surprise, Kiryu has ways of holding the Dragonzord in place via the wire and its strength being better than the Dragonzord’s (at least based on the stats as I see them) means it could probably bear hug Dragonzord to keep it from escaping, so all it needs is to grab onto the Dragonzord, or tie it down first, and then it’s goodnight Tommy...again. Nevermind the fact that the power source thing also won’t be too much of an issue for Kiryu, as the Dragonzord doesn’t really have much to actually hurt it. Let’s also consider the fact that there’s nothing really stopping Kiryu from basically using suppressing fire from its Mazer Cannons or Missiles to basically hold the Dragonzord in place while it charges up the AZC

“But what if Tommy were to jump into Kiryu while Dragonzord goes on a rampage to distract Akane like he did to the OG Megazord” I’ve heard this one thrown around a couple of times, most likely as a joke for people who honestly don’t think DZ stands a chance. If Tommy were to, somehow, be able to get into Kiryu through some sort of hatch, he probably could, but trying to do that is an insanely risky move with no guarantee of even working. And that’s if there even is a way for Tommy to get inside of the likely still moving Kiryu.

This is a close match, don’t get me wrong, and I’m sure someone probably has an argument for Dragonzord winning. I want Dragonzord to win, and I tried thinking of any realistic way that he could more times than Mechagodzilla, but I honestly couldn’t find any. Could he win? Sure. Could he do so more often than Mechagodzilla winning? Not likely, no. Don’t get me wrong, I take no joy in reaching this conclusion, but it’s the most realistic conclusion that I can reach and if I were to try and force the conclusion of Dragonzord winning from what I’ve found, it would destroy whatever dignity and humility I have. It’s a shame that Power Rangers is going to be the only franchise in Death Battle history to lose its first three matches, but...well, at least Godzilla fans will be happy to see their franchise join the Cool Kids Club. I’m rooting for Tommy, but I don’t see him winning as a possibility. My vote goes to Mechagodzilla. Maybe this will help Akane’s self-confidence and will to live.
