Death Battle Predictions: Steven Universe VS Star Butterfly

Steven Universe, the half-Gem hero of the Crystal Gems. Star Butterfly, the teenage princess of Mewni.

Both up and coming teenage heroes, these two have struggled with learning how to use their abilities and prove themselves worthy of the weapons their mothers wielded. They’ve not only had to balance their magical abilities that are often tied to their growth and emotions, but fix the problems caused by their families which led to centuries of war.

These two come from some of the most popular cartoons ever to drop in the 2010s, and be it from their happy-go-lucky attitudes or their penchant for beating evil to the curb, these two young heroes fight for what they believe is right, and have proven time and time again that they are better than the background in which they were raised. They’ll always save the day, and if you think they can’t, they’ll always find a way. It’s gonna get a little weird, maybe a little wild, but only one will walk away from this Death Battle.

Background

Steven Universe

“You can't just attack people you don't understand, you've got to stick up to them and listen to what they have to say.”

Thousands of years ago, there lived an alien race of beings with humanoid bodies made of light that originated from their gemstones. These are the Gems, extraterrestrials with astonishing magical powers tied to their… Gems. At the top of them all were the Diamonds: White, Blue, Yellow and Pink. These four ruled over the entire Gem empire, originating from their home world... Homeworld. Go figure. Long story short, Homeworld was a totalitarian dictatorship led by the Diamonds, with White Diamond at the top of the pecking order. At the behest of White Diamond, Yellow, Blue, and newly indoctrinated Pink Diamond were in charge of expanding their intergalactic empire, conquering all they could and starting new Gem colonies.

Of the four diamonds, Pink had no planets to her name, and after years of begging, finally got one: Earth. After soon becoming bored of her new responsibility, Pink decided to disguise herself in the guise of a Rose Quartz, her signature self-made Gem, to experience the world she was in charge of. After soon falling in love with the planet and its inhabitants, as well as her “lowly” Gem kind, Pink decided to defend Earth, as well as her fellow Gems that were also tired of being treated as tools. Now fully adopting the title of Rose Quartz and faking her own death, Rose banded together with these rebels and formed the Crystal Gems, the rebels of this Star Wars story. Her love for all things living was one of the main driving forces behind the war, which she eventually “won” alongside the Crystal Gems.

Many, many, MANY years later, she met a man named Greg Universe, a musician just starting out on a solo career in Beach City. The two immediately took a liking to one another, and eventually had a kid together. Don’t ask how that works. Unfortunately, thanks to how Gems operate, this would cost Rose her life. In a way, she… became her child. And this child would go on to topple the Homeworld regime. Meet Steven Quartz Universe.

While being raised by Greg in his younger years, Steven would eventually move in with the remaining Crystal Gems: Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl. Being his surrogate mothers, they raised and taught him how to use his powers, taking him on missions and helping him feel included. Eventually he would learn the secrets of his mother’s past, and put an end to the clashing ideals perpetuated by his fellow diamond family members.

Just as his mother did, Steven aims to protect all life across the universe, and chooses to deal with issues without the need for violence, becoming quite the pacifist. An entire new era of peace was founded under Steven’s influence with other Gems, and he has proven time and time again to be a true hero for all Gem and humankind. No matter what, you can always believe in Steven.

Star Butterfly

“Normally, I’d blast you guys with narwhals right now but hey, you don’t need magic for everything.”

Welcome to Mewni, a fairy tale alternate dimension of magical beings dominated by kingdoms. These medieval lands are ruled by the royal Butterfly family, with each female descendant inheriting the Royal Magic Wand upon their 14th birthday. As tradition dictated, the latest cheerful princess, Star Butterfly, inherited the family wand… only to cause massive destruction with it by accident.

Rather than continue to train her under their own tutelage, Star’s parents shipped Star off to Earth to learn her magic (and likely avoid extensive damage to their own home dimension). There, Star would find companionship with human resident Marco Diaz, and would continue to keep her family's royal wand safe by fighting the forces of evil who wanted it for their own nefarious purposes.

While juggling school and her home dimension’s version of puberty, Star protected various dimensions from the clutches of the villain Ludo and his army. Many tried to take what they could not have, and many failed. But it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows being a wizard superhero. Aside from romantic issues, more dangerous enemies came along, including some of the people she thought she could trust.

Mewmans and monsters came into deep conflict in an unsightly race war thanks to vile (yet misunderstood) monsters like Toffee running around. Some people such as the Magic High Commission and Star’s very own idol, Mina Loveberry, kinda went bonkers and tried to exterminate the monster race, including Eclipsa, the Queen of Darkness, one of Star’s great-grandmothers.

Or so she thought. Turns out, Star isn’t actually a Butterfly. She is still royalty, but Eclipsa’s true heiress, Meteora, was swapped out for a peasant due to being a half-breed. Every queen since has been a part of this false lineage. This would lead Star to give up her status as ruler and focus on stopping the terrible magical war. And she did.

After destroying magic and merging Mewni and Earth, Star Butterfly was done fighting the forces of evil. She may be one wacky princess, but it’s always a good time when she’s around. Despite her background, Star ended up becoming one of the strongest and most powerful Mewmans to ever adopt the crown.

Mr. Queasy Plush

A childhood toy of Steven’s. Don’t shake him, or he’ll hurl.

Okay, you can probably tell by now that Steven barely has any real equipment, so here’s just some funny stuff he plays with:

Star Butterfly

Royal Magic Wand

The royal magical wand is a magical heirloom of the Butterfly family, passed down from queen to princess. The wand is a tool meant to cast spells and can make whatever the user thinks of a reality, which can be used to create attacks. The wand can also transform or alter things, such as giving new features to something or changing it entirely, and even transform itself, though the wand changes in appearance depending on who wields it. The royal wand is also an extension of its user's memories, which manifest as its interior. The wand can also transform into other things, like a giant mace, a bow, or a staff

Magic Instruction Book/Book of Spells

Passed down through generations, the Book of Spells is, well, exactly that: an encyclopedia of history’s countless recorded magic spells and the extensive knowledge of past queens. The book is rather hard to navigate, and there are certainly a good deal of dangerous practices located inside. Thankfully, a little blue man named Glossaryck comes with it as a guide.

Dimensional Scissors

Forged by Hekapoo and given to those who rightfully earn them, these magical scissors can cut open portals to other dimensions and allow travel between them.

Abilities

Steven

Gem Physiology

Due to being half-Gem on his mother’s side, Steven’s physiology allows him access to Gem-related abilities. He’s stronger, faster, and tougher than regular human beings. He is capable of using Gem magic, though it is unknown if he possesses all the abilities of a pure Gem, such as retreating to their gemstone when taking fatal damage. However, he can perform other types of Gem magic such as using the warp pad, bubbling Gems and objects, fusion, and shapeshifting. As associated with his gemstone, Steven's powers are maternal and the control of his gemstone is based on emotional clarity. Steven is also not strictly oxygen-dependent and is vacuum-resistant.

Shields

Due to possessing Rose Quartz’s Gem, Steven can summon his mother’s shield. Because Steven's powers are maternal, he is required to feel a strong need to protect and help others to call his shield out. Unlike other Gems, Steven doesn’t “pull” his shields out of his gemstone. Instead, they simply appear over his arms. Steven is capable of summoning his shield multiple times in succession without tiring.

When summoning his shield, Steven can increase its size at will. He can also throw it as a projectile Captain-America-style with great speed and power. The shield has boomerang properties, being able to hit off several targets before returning to Steven’s hands. It also has razor-sharp edges and can cut through substances as tough as a solid rock and metal. On certain occasions, it emits an audible vibration that disables magical constructs when hit.

Bubble

Steven can summon an incredibly durable bubble, encasing him and others that he’s protecting. He can summon the bubble reflexively and expand it to push away enemies. Despite the bubble being airtight, it can generate its own internal atmosphere, allowing Steven and others to survive in the bubble for hours. The bubble is incredibly durable, being able to survive the tremendous pressure of an ocean trench, being crushed by a falling injector, a spaceship crash, and an entire Gem Warship detonating. The shield has shown to be better at withstanding short, narrow bursts of pressure than a large amount of pressure constantly being applied over a large area of the bubble. Despite its incredible durability, it can still be popped with enough force.

Shape Alteration

Steven can change the size of his bubble, as well as change its shape from a sphere into a variety of other shapes, such as causing sharp spikes to appear along its surface or stretching it to encompass and protect other people.

Bubble Gloves

Steven can create small, hard bubbles around his fists like boxing gloves, enhancing the strength of his punches and his ability to block attacks.

Popping

Steven can "pop" his bubble to knock back surrounding enemies. His bubble will also pop if he is startled, or if immense pressure is applied to it.

Shapeshifting

Steven can shapeshift his entire body, or at least parts of it, into different forms. An early example was changing his fingers into cats. However, he can stretch various parts of his body at will repeatedly, though he can only do this for a certain amount of time and his half-human nature puts more of a strain on his body than it would a Gem. He can also shapeshift into his younger self and into a giant monster.

Fluctuating Age

Steven can manipulate his age through his state of mind as an extension of Gem shapeshifting. It has been stated that his age depends solely on how old he thinks he is. Uncontrollable age-changing could also potentially be caused by his emotions like most of his powers. However, due to his organic half, by shapeshifting into the body of an elderly man, Steven's body may actually fail as a result.

Astral Projection

When unconscious, Steven is able to enter an astral dimension while his body remains comatose. While in this state, he cannot interact or communicate with anyone in the physical world unless he phases through them. While in this astral dimension, Steven is able to project a powerful pink aura, something he used to convince the other Diamonds that he was truly Pink Diamond’s reincarnation.

Healing

By using his saliva, Steven has the power to heal animals and plants, as well as repair Gems and inanimate objects. He is shown to be capable of healing cracked gemstones and common human injuries and conditions. Steven generally applies this healing saliva directly by licking his hand and placing it on the injury, but will sometimes use a kiss.

Resurrection

Like his mother, Steven possesses the ability to resurrect the dead with his magic tears. The recipient turns pink and gains special abilities, such as the ability to access the Pink Dimension through their hair. They also gain an extremely slowed metabolism and heart rate.

Corruption Reversal

Steven, along with Blue Diamond, Yellow Diamond, and White Diamond, can heal the effects of Gem corruption permanently when all of them sit in Rose's Fountain together with the corrupted Gems.

Shatter Reversal

Steven, along with the rest of the Diamonds' essence, is able to completely repair a shattered Gem.

Regeneration

Steven endured a lot of physical trauma during his adventures, with an x-ray revealing that his injuries had already been repaired without him even knowing it.

Phytoanimation

Like his mother, Steven possesses limited control and influence over plant life. Using his healing saliva, Steven can grow sentient and sapient flora by licking plant seeds. He can grow a race of sentient watermelons shaped like himself and bring pumpkins to life as pets.

Pebble Animation

Steven's sweat can turn inanimate pebbles into living Pebbles.

Empathic Telepathy

Steven is able to sense things based on their emotional state. He can communicate with Gems through his dreams. This ability has primarily come to light while other beings are under emotional turmoil. Steven can also enter the dreams of other humans, but repeated use of this power can physically exhaust him, as sleeping in this state seems to provide no restful benefit that would otherwise be gained from typical sleep.

Mind Transfer

Steven can transfer his consciousness into another living being he has a connection with while his own body is asleep, such as the case with a Watermelon Steven. The true mind of the host body lays dormant while he is in control of it. He can also possess other humans he thinks about while he sleeps. This ability is strong enough to reach from Homeworld to Earth and it seems to only require Steven to be asleep. When he possessed a Watermelon Steven, the possessed was wide awake.

Mind Link

Steven can link his mind with another being. This power allows Steven to feel the target's emotions and see the world through their eyes. For example, if the target is crying, Steven will cry as well, regardless of his current emotional state. When Steven sleeps, his dream will be whatever the target is looking at. Steven does not have to willingly link minds with a person for this power to work, since he did not originally know that his mind was linked with Blue Diamond.

Psychometry/Retrocognition

This power was first introduced when Steven was fused with Connie as Stevonnie. He can relive moments experienced by his mother Pink Diamond, either as an observer or as Pink Diamond herself. This only occurs when he is sleeping somewhere of great significance to his mother. When fused, the subjects of these memories can appear as amalgamations of figures both components consider to be similar.

Electrical Interference

When under extreme mental or emotional stress, Steven passively projects his subconscious onto devices such as televisions and cell phones. This ability appears to originate from his telepathy interfering with nearby radio signals.

Speed of Descent Regulation

Like Rose Quartz, Steven can levitate his body and even manipulate its gravity based on his emotions. When he thinks happy thoughts, he floats slowly to the ground, while when he is sad or angry, he descends much quicker, he can use this to halt his mid-air trajectory. While floating slowly, anything he touches will also float just as slowly, no matter how large. This also allows him to jump higher than normal, having to be able to jump up to the temple's face and even above the clouds. He can jump extreme distances and later mastered the ability to the extent that he can essentially fly, hovering in the air and even jumping off his own shield to ricochet around in fights.

Fusions

Gems have the innate ability to fuse between one another in a synchronized dance known as the Fusion Dance. This allows two or more Gems to combine and transform into one being. This causes an increase in power and being able to wield and combine the user’s arsenal into even more powerful weapons and abilities.

An important thing to note: these fusions require the presence of another person that Steven does not commonly have access to, and would thus fall under the rule of outside help. As such, it won’t actually be factored in here, but will be touched on, as it is an important element of the show that we feel is at least worth bringing up.

Stevonnie

Being part Gem, Steven naturally has the ability to fuse as well. However, due to his human half, Steven is capable of fusing with humans as well. Such as the case with his close friend Connie, his very first fusion. As Stevonnie, they are quite agile and fierce in battle. They possess both Steven’s shield and Rose's sword, which Connie wields. Using Steven’s expertise with his shield and Connie’s swordsmanship, they’re able to dual wield, making them quite a capable fighter.

Smoky Quartz

Steven’s first fusion with a Gem, that being his long time friend Amethyst. As Smoky Quartz, they are able to possess much of Steven’s and Amethyst’s abilities with the added benefit of combining Steven’s shield and Amethyst’s whip into a versatile yo-yo. It is capable of flight, good for stringing up enemies, functions as a grapple, and multiple can generate large gusts of wind.

Rainbow Quartz 2.0

A fusion between Steven and Pearl, Rainbow Quartz 2.0 combines their main weapons into an umbrella. It is capable of floating them down, can be ridden on and propel them forward with a rainbow streak coming out the other end, can bring inanimate objects to life with just a tap, and can propel people and objects away with just a slash.

Sunstone

Sunstone, a fusion of Steven and Garnet, possesses some incredible strength and durability, as they are able to throw around the Diamond mech and withstand the weight of it. They can also take Steven and Garnet’s main weapons and combine them to form suction cups that can be used to scale up walls and such.

Steg

A fusion between Steven and his dad Greg, Steg possesses some high level musical talent thanks to the combined musical skill inherited from Steven and Greg which turns him into a literal rockstar and is able to play some real jammin’ tunes

Obsidian

A massive fusion between Steven and the Crystal Gems (Garnet, Pearl, and Amethyst), Obsidian is presumably the most powerful fusion to appear in the show, but the most difficult to control, as it requires a great amount of concentration among all of the Gems. They are able to generate lava from their third mouth, which is used to forge a sword composed of everyone’s main weapons. This sword was capable of slicing the arms off the Diamond mech.

Star Butterfly

Magic

Star is capable of performing magic, usually through spellcasting with and without her royal magic wand. In Star vs. the Forces of Evil, magic originates from an outside dimension known as the Realm of Magic and travels to all dimensions. Without the Realm of Magic, magical beings die and magic users can no longer perform magic. Throughout the show, Star has learned and performed various magic spells.

Offensive Spells

  • Narwhal Blast: Likely Star’s most iconic spell. A blast with the greatest ammo of all: narwhals. Comes in a variation with even bigger narwhals. Nice.

  • Dead-Raising Spell: Raises the dead.

Physics-altering Spells

  • Infuriating Repeater: Incites a time loop. Can be undone by performing the spell backwards.

  • Time Moving Spell: Advances time forward by 10 minutes.

  • Mystic Suck Portal: Creates a wormhole that violently pulls anything in the vicinity into it.

  • Telekinesis: What it says on the tin.

  • Body Swap Spell: Causes the user and target to swap bodies.

  • Lightning Twinkle Rescue: Shoots green cat-like faces that turn animated/sentient objects back to normal.

  • Sunshine Friendship Spell: Upon impact, target is in a good, friendly mood. Effect varies depending on the caster's emotions.

Dark Spells

  • Black Velvet Inferno: Traps the target in an inescapable black sphere and engulfs them in searing white light, reverting them back to infancy.

  • Total Annihilation Spell: Turns the wand into a weapon of mass destruction. Generates a giant spectral skull face with butterfly wings that vaporizes anything and everything it touches.

  • Whispering Spell: Upon the whispering of an incantation, the wand self-destructs. This spell was used in the Realm of Magic to destroy all magic itself.

  • "Darkest Spell":  A blast of dark energy that has the ability to kill immortal beings as well as negate regenerative abilities. The spell is considered only lethal if aimed at the victim's heart. Use of this spell comes with the cost of blackening the user's hands.

Dip Down

Thanks to Glossaryck, Star eventually learned how to “dip down”, the ability to use the innate magic within. Even without her wand, she can summon tremendous power, and over time, she became a master of this. She was pretty much forced to, after forfeiting her wand to Eclipsa.

In fact, according to Glossaryck himself, wand magic is only skimming the surface of what’s possible, while dipping down unlocks the true power deep down, hence the name.

Without the use of a wand, Star can do basically everything she could before, like:

Combat Skill

Star has been combat-trained ever since she was a toddler. That’s right, the royal guard babysat her and taught her everything from breaking necks to swordfighting. She’s proven to be very agile in her fights against Ludo’s henchmen, even without a wand. Hell, she’s been in actual combat situations against monstrous foes since before the series.

Forms

Steven

Pink State

Because Steven experienced a great deal of physical and emotional trauma from his numerous adventures and ordeals during his childhood, it affected his body's ability to respond to minor stress normally. As a result, Steven's body began reacting to new stress as if he was in a life-or-death situation. This response manifested as a defense mechanism known as Pink State. In this state, Steven's body glows pink, and his strength, speed, and destructive energy output becomes tremendous. Steven in this state was able to easily outmatch Jasper in a fight, knocking her through many large trees with one bubble-enhanced punch, and even shattering her.

At first, Steven had little to no control over this state. He would enter it automatically when angry or when he experienced anxiety, and it put him at risk of accidentally hurting people near him. During his training with Jasper, however, he managed to maintain this state for a prolonged period of time and gain some control, during which he gained a greater degree of strength and a change in personality. However, he eventually lost all self-restraint as a result, enjoying the thrill of the battle and actually shattering Jasper. The ability of the Pink State appeared to also extend to abilities of fusions as well.

Super Speed

While in his Pink State, Steven’s overall speed heightens, and he achieves greater accuracy when moving at this speed. He can also move so fast that time is nearly standing still.

Super Strength

While in his Pink State, Steven’s physical strength increases, demonstrating physical power far beyond his own natural strength.

Pink Scream

Pink Diamond was stated to have a scream that could shatter the walls, and Steven has inherited that ability in his Pink State. This scream is powerful enough to almost completely ruin the Reef, create a large crater beneath Steven, break many lights and crack the walls. While in his monster form, Steven’s roar can make a crack on the ground of the ocean beneath him, pushing his friends and his father, and even knocking out the Diamond Mech.

Shield Dome

In his Pink State, Steven can create a powerful shield dome that can close inwards. It is different from the bubble shield in that it appears as a series of interlocked diamond shapes that disappear in groups when deactivated. When it first manifested, it demonstrated the ability to carve through several solid objects, slicing them apart upon impact.

Body Proportion Manipulation

In his Pink State, Steven has manipulation of his own body proportions. At first, it was an uncontrollable ability. However, after his training with Jasper, he should have control over this ability.

Hexagonal Shields

In his Pink State, Steven can create hexagonal pink shields that are capable of completely repelling boulders thrown by a strong fighter such as Jasper. Steven can stack a number of them to make a thicker one or wall of them, or protrude spikes from them that can be thrown with enough force to completely shatter a Gem.

Monster State

Due to all of his emotional grief, PTSD, and sense of purposelessness, Steven viewed himself as a monster and therefore transformed into one. In this state, he has a bestial mentality not unlike a Corrupted Gem, and is much more powerful and dangerous than before. In this Monster State, Steven quickly defeated Alexandrite, completely resisted the powers of all three Diamonds, broke free of Lapis' water chains, and even overpowered the Cluster. Once all of the Crystal Gems, the Diamonds, Spinel, the Cluster, Greg, and Connie all got through to him through their words and love, however, Steven snapped out of this state and turned himself back to normal. However, it was implied that he would have remained in this state forever if they did not intervene.

Star Butterfly

Butterfly Form

Star’s super form. After going through Mewberty and all that, she achieved her magical Butterfly form, an ability gained by Mewman girls when they are of age. With this new development comes giant wings, some extra arms, and real wicked eyes that allow her to...see multiple dimensions, apparently. But more importantly, her physical and magical abilities increase tremendously.

Also known as Ultimate Magic Form.

Barrier

Star can pull up an energy barrier capable of fending off an assault from Meteora.

Power Expulsion

Star can condense all the energy in this form and use it as a devastating offensive tool. This will revert her back to base form, though.

Portal Creation/Dimensional Travel

While in her Butterfly form, Star can create portals to other locations, even other dimensions, allowing her free access to travel without the need of dimensional scissors.

Power

Speed

Weaknesses

Steven

Steven’s got a lot of heart, but has also faced a lot of hardships. For one, when he’s not Pink Steven, he is not a very skilled offensive fighter. He’s far more focused on defense and trying to de-escalate the situation. Of course, that won’t fly in a Death Battle. His emotions are also some of his worst enemies, as they can very heavily affect his mental state and powers. His Monster Form, while incredibly powerful, makes him a rampaging beast.

His Gem is the core life energy of his body, and if it’s damaged in any way, he could be in some serious trouble. Shatter it, and you shatter Steven. This also extends to separation. When White Diamond extracted his Gem, Steven became harshly weakened. Had he not reunited with himself, he would’ve perished.

Star Butterfly

Star is an upbeat warrior, but this doesn’t always do her good. She’s impulsive and headstrong, often not planning things out before they go south. She has frequently landed herself in unfortunate situations on a hunch or whim. Not that she’s dumb or never knows what she’s going to do, but she’s a bit too eager.

Star’s hyperactivity has also led her to skip over much of the Book of Spells. There are only two recorded chapters that she’s read fully (Skywynne’s and Eclipsa’s), meaning her full potential will never quite be realized.

Summary

Steven

“I changed. That’s the final piece. All those struggles, I learned from them, and I grew! Oh my gosh! It’s not just my Gem powers I’ve forgotten! All this "happily ever after" stuff has made me forget the first power I ever had: The power to change!”

Advantages:

  • Superior regeneration

  • Debatably more intelligent (at least in Future)

  • Has more stat amplifying abilities

  • His vocal cords

  • Legendary theme songs

Disadvantages:

  • Defenses don’t hold up against Star’s offense

  • Physically weaker

  • Much slower

  • A large number of his abilities aren’t combat applicable, and those that are aren’t as varied as Star’s abilities

  • Less combat experience (hadn’t received any until he was a teenager)

  • His emotions can affect his performance in battle, and some spells allow Star to manipulate emotions

Ah, Steven vs Star. A classic among the DB community. Known for being one of the show's most iconic match ups for its meaningful theme and potential for pure cartoon fun.

I’ve always loved cartoon fights on the show, because some of these series need to be represented and talked about because they offer such a wide range of storytelling. Taking a look at both backstories these two characters come from very rich and engaging backgrounds, many of which would love to see interact with one another.

Now, who wins this fight? Star. Rather easily. INCREDIBLY easily.

Being explicitly stated to be one of the most powerful, if not, most powerful princesses to not only take on the crown and the magic wand of her family, but she has been left in charge of a power that has been stated multiple times by family and villains alike to be able to threaten the universe. How literal can this be taken? One need only to look at official sources of the Butterfly magic book to get further details on one of her favorite past grandmas performing a dimension bust. A past grandma that she explicitly has stated to be her favorite and read the whole chapter of.

This topples any of Steven’s feats, as he’s nowhere close to her level of power. Shields? She destroys them. Bubbles? She destroys them. His own physical durability? Forget about it.

He may have healing, but I legitimately question if he even has that going for him after Star figured out how to heal in an episode that happened early on in the series where she attempted to heal Marcos' broken arm with some minor difficulties. Given that she continues to study magic after this point and becomes a very prominent spell caster this should be a non issue. Steven’s never been shown to recover anything more than a broken bone, so it’s questionable if he’d even be able to Regen from more intense wounds without proof.

As for Stars magic spells, they are too overwhelming in number for Steven to even hold a candle to. Transmutation, Hallucinations inducers, emotion effectors, Steven doesn’t have anything to really effect Star on such a scale other than making her feeling certain emotions but even that’s not likely to work due to stars own power to resist such effects.

Then there’s the matter of sending Steven to another dimension, of which there is no way of recovering from on Steven’s end without some seriously questionable assumptions.

Star’s advantages literally have no end. Steven is getting completely destroyed in this match, and for those who were not in favor of this fight because of it being a stomp, I say: That’s just how fights work. Not every fight has to be a close match for all the ages. They each bring a unique and fun personality to the show that I have so much wanted to vibe to since the show started putting in more cartoon characters. It’s one of the key reasons why people love the match so much, so at the very least be happy for those people that have been waiting for this match up for literal years in the making. One of my hopes for this fight was for it to feel like another episode of their own respective tv show’s, and I feel confident DEATH BATTLE will do just that. Some of the show's most fun matches are stomps, but people enjoy them because of the characters they bring to the table, and that should be enough reason as to why the episode is so fun.

Hopefully these two characters come out with more material in the future one day, as I’d love to see both return to other cartoon matches that fit them both as well, but till then, we have this potential fight of a lifetime to enjoy in the meantime.

Steven’s going to be seeing stars in this fight.

(How)

I won that sandcastle contest btw. Now, Steven VS Star. This was a match up I have tons of history with, and it's been my most wanted for five years. While I personally prefer Steven VS KO these days this is still an incredible My that I'm more than looking forward to. Wish Steven didn't eat shit though.

Back in the prediction with Nemesis I thought Steven had speed feats in the Quad C range. Yeah that never existed. At best, he has trillions via the warps. And apparently Star matches that, if not flat surpasses it. So yeah the only advantage Steven had is gone. Anyway without numbers, I'll explain why Star is about to ruin Steven in ways Cartoon Network can only dream of.

Even from a glance, Star's versatility is unmatched by most DB combatants in general (except for DC and Marvel heralds, I think), because she can basically do anything she wants. Spells can be made up on the fly, and with her imagination it's almost guaranteed that she can just say Steven Die Blast and it would do something pretty damn potent. Or she can just use a spell from one of her ancestors, like an existence erasing butterfly. Yeah because those are a thing.

Steven is way more emotionally unstable, which as you'd imagine is something Star can take advantage of. And seeing what she did in season 4, it's not too out of her way to mentally fuck with Steven until he turns into a sluggish, emo, cotton candy Godzilla. Something that Star would have no issue taking out.

There's definitely way more reasons than this but basically the bottom line is Star has so many ways to make Steven commit not alive that the Omega Sanction is taking goddamn notes. I just hope they find some way to kill Pony Head. Hate that bitch.

hello chat

Back at it again with the cartoon matchup hype. It’s still pretty surreal this one is even happening. Season 8’s been really fun so far (Shadow return and Po wooooo), and this one is building up to be more of the same.

It really sucks how much hate these series get, cuz aside from the obvious blunders, most of their shows (especially early on) are fun stuff. I really like Steven (before Future) and Star. This is one of my most anticipated battles in a while, so I’m glad to write my first verdict of the year on it.

To say the least, the stat comparison is contentious. Steven’s a lot easier. He scales to Lapis lifting up the Earth’s ocean and the Cluster, putting him comfortably in the planetary range. To go even higher, the energy of the Diamonds’ super duper luminosity blast would come out on a more cosmic scale, Dwarf Star to Solar System. I think that end’s perfectly fine, personally.

But Star is the real teeth-clencher. Hoo boy. I will say, people have been a lot stricter with her than Steven. Which I can understand to an extent, her scaling chain requires a bit more deductive reasoning than just “yeah she fights this person lol”. I think Universal is fine, and lemme explain.

First off, I have never seen the notion that Star can’t tap into the higher limits of magic actually backed up. She became one of the best magic users in history, and even if she theoretically couldn’t use the wand’s universal power (an unsupported claim), dipping down is just as good, if not better, and you can’t possibly say there are restrictions to that.

So Skywnne is pretty blatant. Dimensions in this verse are universe-sized, even the bounce lounge has stars in the background. Skywynne didn’t use a specific spell to pull it off, she just overloaded herself with power.

Toffee one-shotting Omnitraxus has seen a good deal of discourse, which I can’t say is warranted. All the arguments that Toffee used some sort of hax are pure headcanon. The only actual thing would be magic draining, but it’s incredibly evident he only drained his magic AFTER demolishing him with a single blast.

Then you have things like the feats regarding the Realm of Magic, which, admittedly, is probably the shakiest support. Corruption, restoration, whatever it is, it’s not very straightforward and easy to quantify. The Whispering Spell did outright destroy that shit, though. I think it adds a little bit, but I can understand why people wouldn’t take this.

Regardless, the point is: Star takes the power advantage by a lot. Steven’s defenses aren’t lasting long here.

Speed is weird. You wanna use the lowest of ends, both can dodge lasers and stuff. You wanna get into the juicy shit, Star’s likely winning out. Both Baby and Lapis have flown interstellar distances. I’m pretty sure Baby flew a lot farther, though Steven’s scaling to the latter is more concrete. Without that, you have the Galaxy Warp vs Omnitraxus and the Spell with No Name. I’m not 100% sold on using Skywynne’s feat for speed, cuz that hinges on if all other magic provably moves at the same speed and if she herself even reacted to it, but it’s there. But you don’t need all that, since Omnitraxus < Galaxy Warp < Total Annihilation Spell

Star seems to be taking all the meaningful stats for herself. The best you can do for Steven is argue that he’s physically stronger than base Star, I know there’s gonna be a lot of wonder about that one.

But even putting stats aside, Star just has a lot more to her. A lot of Steven’s abilities are useless in a 1v1 combat scenario, while Star has an endless plethora of spells. Star can do pretty much everything Steven can. Shields? Star has those. Flight? Hers is better. Size manipulation and a monster form? Star has giant rainbow armor. This isn’t even mentioning all her summons, the ways she can transmute Steven, or spells that manipulate mental states.

It’s unfortunate how lopsided this is. Star has more power, more skill, more abilities, more ways to reliably end the fight. To be crystal clear, Steven is gonna get Starstruck

Hyperstarman

(The best song in the show hands down and despite being a meme, these UT versions are still major bops, and is probably where most people recognize the song nowadays.)

Heyo, back so soon already for another verdict cause I couldn’t afford to miss this one. Real quick though, Po vs IF was, well as Po would put it, Awesome. It had the vibe of a Kung Fu Panda scene throughout the entire episode. To the dialogue, interactions and track just put a big ol grin on my face the whole time. It even made me care for Iron Fist a little who I had no attachment to, it was that charming to me. My boy Po pulled through in what is my new favorite episode of the season, props to everyone for that and my boy origin doing a great job for his first episode.

Now with that out of the way, I was basically convinced the next time was one of two things. Either the one that never happens no matter how much I will it too or…

Perhaps another time that match will happen

But also AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Finally, one of my top 10 most wanted is finally happening. Letssssssss gooooooooooo. More cartoon representation lets get it, always welcome to see in this show. I grew up on Steven Universe and Star vs the Forces of Evil when I was a young lad. I enjoyed Steven Universe quite a bit back then with it’s fun characters and engaging moments in the show, particularly some of the more emotional stuff. Star vs the Forces of Evil, while I don’t enjoy it as much, I still quite enjoyed it a lot with it’s energized tone and wacky antics with the story getting more complex later on. So I have some long history with both shows but recently after some talk and looking back, they aren’t quite as good as I remember with some obvious glaring flaws (particular the rushed endings), which while are valid, I still somewhat have a soft spot for both cause of childhood nostalgia and think the hate can get out of line too much for both. This was also one of the first matches I wanted back in the day as it came to my mind while watching both. The similar vibes both gave out made me wonder what crossover event could happen between the two shows and if the main characters fought, like in the old days for me. So it’s great to see them here at last and allow me to re-experience my childhood once again.

Now let's get down to business on who will take it in this bout. At a glance, it seems to be a battle of defense vs offense which isn’t too far off actually and comes down to if Steven’s defenses can hold up to Star’s offense. So for this verdict, imma switch things up and look at each character’s stats and abilities and directly compare them at the end.

Steven Universe:

Steven Universe Intro GIF - StevenUniverse Intro Steven GIFs

  • Attack Potency/Durability

First let's look at what level of AP and durability Steven is at. Being the main character of his series he’d naturally scale to plenty of the higher end feats of his verse. While there are plenty of feats to go off of, the best one he can scale to is the Diamond blast that wiped out most of the gems on earth. The estimated energy output needed to make the light the Diamonds made that spanned across from homeworld all the way to Earth would put it at around dwarf star to solar system level at best and being superior to all the diamonds, this naturally scales to his AP and Durability.

  • Speed

In terms of what the best he has for speed, it’s quite clear cut as he was able to react while warping and warps have shown to move from homeworld to earth in a short amount of time which would put the wraps at around 34 trillion c speeds. Steven had stuck his head out during a warp so this would scale to his reaction speeds.

  • Experience

Steven is simply put, a pacifist of sorts and actively avoids fighting in most scenarios. Attempting to resolve conflicts through talking rather than fighting and while that won’t be a factor in this, it does impact how little combat experience he has in the show. He has been able to hold his own in his fair share of battles occasionally and did receive some small training from Jasper in Future. So while he isn’t out of the blue when it comes to combat, it ain’t exactly something he’s an expert in.

  • Abilities

Being part Gem, Steven has access to a whole slew of abilities inherited from his mother. To creating bubble shields, his mother’s shield, regeneration, and healing all suit his pacifist nature in this defensive style kit. This has allowed him to protect himself and friends on numerous occasions. In Future however, he eventually gained a pink state that had risen from his conflicting emotions. This granted him enhanced speed, increased strength and even stronger pink constructs which differed from his pacifist nature. All of these conflicting emotions would columate to Steven transforming into a giant pink monster which had completely overpowered most of the powerful beings in the show.

Star Butterfly:

  • Attack Potency/Durability

Now onto Star and the big thing in contention for this battle is if Star Butterfly is truly universal? After all of the arguments I’ve seen and hoping back and forth on this topic myself, I can safely say in my opinion, yes. All of the evidence I’ve seen for it holds together well. One of Star’s ancestors, Queen Skywynne, had blown up a universe by accident while she was dipping down for the first time and was a complete novice at that time. Star is regarded as one of the most powerful users of the wand and had mastered dipping down by the end of the series so she’d most likely be comparable to this. There’s even more with Omnitraxus Prime who is a living space time continuum and has a galaxy sized stomach inside of em. He was one shot by Toffee which people say was through haxs but there is no proof of that and even if it was, Toffee absorbed his powers anyways so he should still be comparable. Star would scale to this as well as she one shot him in her butterfly form and left him as a puddle. So all this and more makes me lean to the idea that Star being universal is reasonable, in my opinion at least. Though some also say that she is a glass cannon and that it wouldn’t scale to her durability because it comes from the wand. Well as mentioned earlier, Star by the end has mastered dipping down and is capable of doing magic without the wand anymore and Glossaryck even states that dipping down unlocks her true power deep down while the wand only scratches the surface of that power. So this would quite clearly scale to her durability as well.

  • Speed

Now onto speed and the best one for Star to scale to is once again Queen Skywynne in which the speed it took for her to destroy the universe. It was implied to be instant but on a low end scale of about 10 seconds, it would be about 146 quadrillion c. People react to the spells cast from the wand and Star herself reacting to several other magic attacks, this would scale to her reactions.

  • Experience

Star is quite hyperactive and impulsive for most of the series which always lands her into trouble quite a bit throughout the series. This may have been influenced by the fact that she was trained heavily in combat ever since she was a toddler. It made her into quite the capable fighter and managed to hold her own in battle without the need of the wand or magic.

  • Abilities

Now Star has alottttttttttttt of magical abilities at her disposal which given her energized nature, suited to her likings quite well. Dimensional travel, time stopping, hallucinations, emotional manipulations, transmutations, summonings and so much more. She later on even dabbled into the darker spells of the wand which granted her even more deadly abilities. Eventually after she went through Mewberty, she attained her butterfly form which was able to overpower Toffee and go head to head with Meteora.

Overall:

Now directly comparing what both bring to the table, it is a complete and utter stomp for Star. Initially before going into this I just thought it was more so clear cut for her. But after looking into it more closely and really seeing what both bring, it legit left me wondering if Star even had a real disadvantage in this. The AP gap is big enough for Star to one shot him and Steven cannot harm her. Even if all the arguments against universal Star were used, giving Steven the same treatment would still put Star in the advantage with spells that are capable of destroying planets while Steven would only scale to Lapis who moved the ocean which would be multi continent.   Star blitzes with the most reasonable high ends you give to both and even if you go with their lower end speed feats she’d still be comparable or faster still. Star has much more experience in battle as she has been in combat ever since she was toddler unlike Steven who hadn’t experienced combat until he was a teen. And Star is far more versatile with so many magical spells at her disposal that can just negate Steven’s regen, BFR him, summon creatures to outnumber him, do a massive AOE attack or even manipulate his emotions which is very fatal as his emotions are tied to him using his powers. Steven just really has no viable way of winning this and with so much against him, I’d say Star is easily the safer option to go here which is a bit of a shame as while I do like both, I do prefer Steven a fair bit.

But with that said I’m very excited to see this episode. I haven’t been this hyped for an episode in a long time. So much from what I’ve seen has got me plenty to look forward to with the sneak peak and track. It’s still just wild to see both these shows and with my good friend Origin workin on this episode is really fitting, and he may or may not have snuck my friends in the episode. Can’t wait to watch this with Redrunner and Gumball, it’s going to be a blast.

Me and the DB blog are together again

Hello everyone, it's great to be back here again. Po vs Iron Fist was a great episode. and some really fun animation with the KFP spirit that I really love. Huge props to the team for their great efforts. And now we’re here to talk about Steven Universe vs Star Butterfly. This has been a long time requested and popular idea among many people and for very good reason, seeing two of the most beloved animated series of the 2010’s finally in Death Battle is great, really nice to see more of a medium that’s less common than others and from the looks of everything it’s shaping up to be a great episode. I really love Steven Universe. I've been a fan ever since it premiered despite its flaws and rocky history (no pun intended) I have a ton of fond memories with it and I’m really happy to finally see it here in DB. And I really enjoyed Star VS the Forces of Evil from my experience with it so it’s great to celebrate the great things both franchises have done and how much they mean to countless people. But with introductions out of the way let’s go into who I think wins this.

Steven is pretty easy to deduce power for, with feats like tanking the Gem Warship explosion and the ship itself could tank Rose’s Light Cannons when a single one destroyed The Red Eye. Lapis controlling all the oceans of the Earth and forms a giant tower out of them while having a cracked gem, The Cluster threatening to destroy the Earth and being far bigger then it when it fully forms. Stevens pretty easily in the planet level area with these feats, at the highest end of his power he can scale to the Diamonds blast on Earth which if it came from Homeworld (which is located in a different galaxy then Earth) can reach Solar System level because of how massive the light is and the luminosity that would be required for it (24-192 KiloFOE to be exact). This is somewhat debatable but I personally think it’s fine to give Steven.

Star meanwhile is a whole different beast altogether and has been part of a lot of contentious debates lately about her power. However if you ask me her feats are pretty straightforward and easy to justify. There’s the obvious fact such as her wand being stated to be capable of destroying the universe which is pretty substituted by several feats. Such as Skywynne Butterfly blowing up a whole dimension in the past which is universe sized, and she did this while inexperienced. Star being one of the greatest magic users and her skill with the wand should definitely be comparable, she’s even read Skywynne’s chapter all the way through and was one of her favorite grandma’s so she likely could use her magic as well.

Then you have Omnitraxus Prime, a literal living space time continuum with a galaxy for a stomach getting one shot by Toffee who Star later defeats. And no he did not use any Hax for this there’s no definitive proof of that and he absorbed Omnitraxus’s magic after annihilating him so he should scale regardless. Considering Star scales above characters who did well against Toffee and obviously scales to him herself that’s pretty clear cut.

Of course there’s also Eclipsa’s most powerful spell devouring dimension after dimension throughout the multiverse until nothing remained and the events regarding The Realm of Magic albeit that’s the most uncertain of all of them and somewhat unclear to argue what it definitely is. That said the rest of the feats are very clear cut so Star being universal should be fine which is to say she has a massive power advantage over Steven. And honestly if you applied similar scrutiny to Steven Star’s been getting he’d be vastly lower and would peak at around multi continental without the higher end feats such as the Diamonds blast being the primary example.

Speed is once again fairly straightforward, both have feats of dodging lightning and lasers but I’ll be covering the best they have to offer. Steven is comparable to Lapis who flew from Earth to Homeworld during an unspecified period of time and flew to outside the Milky Way and back (93414 C), making her MFTL+. The best Steven could scale to is the speed of the Warp which traveled from Homeworld across a few galaxies back to Earth in a short timeframe. This has been calculated at 34 trillion C. Since Steven has moved his head outside of it before while reacting to an adjacent warp moving at this speed you could possibly argue it scaling to his reactions. There’s also his astral projection moving from Homeworld to Earth but it was explicitly too fast for him to react to so it doesn’t scale to reaction speed.

And for Star her best speed primarily comes from scaling to Omnitraxus who can grow and shrink to the size of a galaxy almost instantly. This has been calculated at 13 trillion C and the Total Annihilation spell traveling to every dimension has been calculated at 75 trillion C, you can take it even further scaling to Skywynne’s dimension busting blast which in order to effect the dimension as fast as it did would have to be MFTL+ (146 quadrillion C) and considering Star reacts to magic attacks very frequently this can scale to her reactions, so in the lower end scenario Star is comparable to faster in speed and in the higher end case she has a big advantage in the speed department.

Durability is the same since Skywynne tanked the dimension bust in base and Star should definitely be comparable. She’s also survived her own magic at point blank range before and her wand is established to have recoil so she should be capable of withstanding her own magical power.

And of course Star has the versatility and hax advantage thanks to her variety of different spells. Transmutation, mind manipulating, causing hallucinations (which certainly can be effective), time stop, traveling across dimensions, multiple different attacks and projectiles, some dark magic just to name a few. She definitely has multiple abilities Steven has no real counter to and has more overall to use then him despite how versatile his gem powers are. Steven does have better healing capabilities especially due to having regeneration but it ultimately can’t overcome the sheer versatility advantage that Star has (especially when some magic can potentially directly counter it.) Even monster Steven she can combat with all of the aforementioned and with her rainbow kaiju battle armor and immensely powerful Butterfly form which massively increases her already impressive capabilities.

Yeah as you can tell from this Star should win she has all the major advantages in every relevant area, has more versatility and more useful abilities that can give her the advantage pretty easily , has more combat experience (due to being trained since she was a toddler) ironically she even has the physical strength advantage despite how impressive Steven lifting the Gem Injector is due to Skywynne lassoing a planet which Star is comparable too so ultimately Star has everything she needs for a victory.

Of course don’t get me wrong I love Steven and he’s definitely capable in his own right but ultimately Star is too powerful, too versatile and has every major advantage. I’m positive they’ll both make an excellent episode and I’m very happy to have gotten back into both series for this while celebrating all the great experiences I’ve had with them.

Steven was a true gem but this Star shines brightest in the universe. So I say the victor shall be Star Butterfly!

Phantom Falcon

Guess who’s back

Back again

So this is cool, rewatching SVTFOE was a great time, and binge watching S1 and half of S2 for SU was also nice. This episode has solid connections, a good potential for animation and solid track (latter came out btw it’s goated), etc. Very pleased to see this happen

I guess to quickly tldr my thoughts on previous episodes since I last came here, Shaduko is based af and top 3 episodes for me, Lex vs Doom was surprisingly great, Heihachi vs Geese, while my least favorite of the season, is still a fun time, Balakasa, while having a flawed analysis, and a really cool fight, and Po vs Iron Fist was everything I wanted in it

Anyways I’ve seen multiple people doubting universal star bc uhhhhh reasons. Putting aside the funny mental gymnastics meme, the arguments don’t make much sense. Omnitraxus is described to be living space time, and when we see inside his body, he has visible stars and planets in the background, which is bare minimum star level. Toffee one shot Omnitraxus when he had half of the wand with him. While people argue this is hax instead of AP, people misinterpret what happened. After Toffee one shot him, he then grabbed Omnitraxus’ skull, and then drained his soul with soul hax. The actual destruction of Omnitraxus’ body was done through AP, not soul hax. One quick look at the episode would tell you that. Star with the full wand should scale, and in her butterfly form, she nearly melted Toffee’s entire body. Toffee tanking hits from Moon, who at the time matched his power, so his durability should scale to his AP pretty solidly. Queen Skywynne’s feat of dimension busting is insanely clear cut, and she did this while dipping down for the first time. She was a noob at this point, anyone who has mastered dipping down would scale, like Star. People have said this doesn’t scale to Star, but literally no evidence of this exists except for “Uhhh she doesn’t just because”. And while they aren’t super solid on their own, restoring the realm of magic from Toffee’s control is good supporting evidence, and destroying the realm of magic, while it did require 3 people, would still be multi galaxy (divide universal power by 3 lmfao)

Honestly the amount of scrutiny given to Star has been a bit absurd, when you can easily apply the same to Steven. The Diamond Blast getting solar system is assuming the Diamonds were at Homeworld based on the statement that White Diamond hasn’t left Homeworld for eons. Issue is, eons isn’t always used literally, and this could be the same thing. There’s also no real reason to assume the Diamond Blast scales to physicality aside from “he just does”. There’s also no reason to give Steven MFTL+ because Gems are stated to be incapable of going FTL. There’s also no reason to scale Steven to the Cluster’s planet bust since it was specifically for the full form, not just its arm. Applying equal scrutiny to both, Steven would be multi-continent at best scaling to Lapis, while Star would be at minimum planet level via a spell of hers being capable of neutralizing planets, a spell stopping the rotation of a planet, etc… Star should have power no matter what you do. Similarly, speed, at best, is roughly comparable, with Omnitraxus growing galaxy sized compared to Steven reacting while moving in warps, but that’s the minimum for Star. At her best, she can easily reach quadrillions of times light speed via Skywynne’s dimension bust, putting her at “massively blitzes Steven, holy shit” level.

This isn’t even getting to their sheer versatility, where Steven is horribly outmatched. Transmutation, summoning spells, regeneration negation, massive AoE, emotional manipulation, BFR, etc. are all abilities Steven has no direct counter too. Even if they were perfectly even in stats, Star wins via just being far too haxxy for Steven. Add that with her greater combat experience and her far superior range and AoE, and there’s no real way for Steven to win, even being generous

It’s a shame this battle is this big of a stomp, but not much you can do. It really do be like that sometimes. Best we can hope for is that he doesn’t get a brutal death (inb4 unfunny genocide joke). In the end, by the time the fight’s over, Star is gonna make Steven see butterflies. And stars. Maybe

Now watch as next time is Cole vs Al-

The blog literally gave him kiloFOE and trillions of times faster than light? Which is... the highest level you can possibly argue for him, and immensely higher than where he's rated on any VS site in existence? He got EVERY benefit of the doubt possible.

  4. Hm, awful lot of unwarranted toxicity in the comments. Guess the loser is more popular than I expected (I admit I've never followed either cartoon).

All the pointless hostility aside, you did a great job here. I worried that this match might be contentious, but you all still stayed objective and made a great read. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to reading again next time, even if it tells me something I don't want to see.

  5. Wanking Start to universal and Skywynne's levels despite her never explicably showing that much power (As well as a bunch of anti-feats to disprove it) is the most bullshit I've seen on this blog in a long time. But whatever, cheers for the research guys.

    3. ^ Do YOU even understand what is "wrong" here? *How exactly* was Steven lowballed, really? Because you've been spamming that in these comments without even saying what about him was lowballed, how so, or what feats he has that prove that he can do better. Either you provide all of those or you're just being petty.

  9. I didn't think the reception could turn out to be a mini Ben vs. Hal but golly I sure would like to be proven wrong.
