Death Battle Predictions: Scarlet Witch vs Zatanna

“When we can take green from grass, blue from heaven, and red from blood, we have already an enchanter’s power.”

- J.R.R. Tolkien

Scarlet Witch, the mystical member of the Avengers and wielder of Chaos Magic from Marvel Comics.

Zatanna, the mistress of magic and ally of the Justice League from DC Comics.

Everyone is familiar with the idea of magic. Be it the students of Hogwarts, Gandalf defeating the Balrog, or even a common street performer pulling a rabbit out of their hat, magic is something that everyone will have an encounter with in some way. But these two heroes take the idea of magic and wield it with immense levels of power, breaking even the mightiest forces in the multiverse if they must.

But today, only one of these magicians can walk away. When the curtains pull back and the spotlights shine, these two mystical masters will finally do battle. Only one of them will survive this clash of enchanted combat. Get ready for a magical DEATH BATTLE!

Background

Scarlet Witch

I am the Scarlet Witch… and I remember everything.

To say Wanda Maximoff had a complicated childhood would be an understatement. Wanda and her brother Pietro led difficult lives, barely surviving many dangerous and nearly fatal incidents. Eventually, the two would be forced to fend for themselves after the destruction of their home village, until they were eventually found by the mutant Magneto, who saved them from a mob of angry villagers and recruited them into his forces. It was then that the world would truly begin to know the power of Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch.

Wanda and Pietro would serve Magneto for a while, using their unique powers to accomplish their goals. Pietro, now known as the mutant Quicksilver, proved to be gifted with incredible speed. Scarlet Witch, on the other hand, proved to be a master of magic, specifically hexes capable of manipulating probability. Soon enough, however, the duo would depart from Magneto’s brotherhood and join the Avengers.

Being a part of this new group would lead to many new adventures for the witch, many of which would bring her great difficulty and grief. Though she eventually retired, marrying the android Vision and having children, those children were destroyed by Mephisto. This led to a convoluted sequence of events and a degradation of Wanda’s sanity, ultimately culminating in her rewriting reality for the worse.

Wanda removed nearly all of mutantkind from existence on M-Day, totally reshaping reality, completely changing it from what it was before. However, despite these difficulties and trials, she would ultimately succeed in overcoming her struggles. Reality was restored, she had new children, and she eventually conquered her archenemy Chthon once and for all. Wanda Maximoff now stands stronger than she ever was before, and ready to face any enemy who challenges her and the world she protects. It matters not how much magic her enemies have; the odds are never too low for the Scarlet Witch to overcome.

Zatanna

“My name's Zatanna Zatara. I'm a spellaholic.”

At first glance, young Zatanna Zatara may appear to be nothing more than a simple young street magician. But underneath that hat and cape lies one of the most proficient magic-wielders in all of comic books. Born to the legendary magician Giovanni “John” Zatara, Zatanna had little idea about her magic potential, instead spending her time as a street performer.

Zatanna became a very skilled performer, but she one day came home to find her father Zatara missing, setting off her adventure to find him. Throughout her journey, she met heroes like the Atom and Green Lantern, before she finally located Zatara in Kharma, trapped by a spell cast by the evil Allura.

Following her successful endeavor, Zatanna returned to the magician biz, also meeting other heroes during this time. She began assisting the Justice League from time to time with their battles and conflicts, and became a full-fledged member after successfully rescuing Hal Jordan on a mission.

Zatanna’s arsenal is uniquely suited around the usage of magic and enchantments, giving her a unique advantage for League missions against opponents with similar supernatural powers and abilities. She notably became a good ally of Batman himself, sometimes assisting him in his own battles. However, she did notably struggle at one point with a bad habit of wiping the memories of her targets or those she feels know too much, which has created problems for her in the past.

However, Zatanna would ultimately succeed in overcoming the problems she caused and set herself right, being able to continue with her heroics. She continued to get stronger and more skilled, and is now seen as one of the most powerful members of the Justice League, if not its greatest member. Enemies of the Justice League beware, for if the League feels the need, you might find yourself facing Zatanna Zatara, Mistress of Magic.

Equipment

Scarlet Witch

The Darkhold

The Darkhold is a cursed scroll of flesh created by Chthon, containing his many evil works of magic. This text of sins acts as a conduit to impose his power on the earthly realm. Wanda obtained and fused with the Darkhold, drastically increasing the potency of her magic as well as the spells she can now use. The Darkhold also allowed Wanda to absorb Chthon into her and to seal him within, gaining all of his dark power and knowledge.

The Eldritch Orchard

The Eldritch Orchard is a pocket dimension created by Wanda made entirely out of Chaos Magic. It functions as a personalized afterlife that Wanda is transported to after death. Wanda can control the Eldritch Orchard to whatever extent she wants. From the Eldritch Orchard, Wanda unknowingly resurrected herself in the real world, subconsciously created monsters out of Chaos Magic to attack Krakoa, and merged with her past and present selves. In fact, as long as she’s in the Eldritch Orchard, Wanda cannot traditionally die and will come back from void itself.

Soon after dying in a complex plan to provide mutants with a priceless gift, Scarlet Witch was able to link the Eldritch Orchard to Krakoa across all of time and space so that any mutant to have ever lived could be resurrected there, essentially turning it into the mutant Elysian Fields. This acted as a way to transcend beyond the limits of ordinary death for not only herself, but also mutantkind. In doing so, Wanda was no longer the destroyer of mutantkind, but rather the savior of it. She was no longer the pretender, but rather the redeemer.

Zatanna

Show Costume

Her iconic attire that she can magically put on anytime she wants, which not only is her costume on stage but also doubles as her superheroine uniform. She has since integrated White Dwarf Matter and size-controlling equipment into her suit which allows to shrink or enlarge herself with just a click of a button like the Atom. Her gloves even have a mind of their own.

Wand

No magician is complete without their wand, and Zatanna is no exception. While its role with Zatanna may be as just a normal prop, Zatanna has been shown to carry it into battle as well to cast spells, but she works perfectly fine without it as well.

Magician Hat

Zatanna’s swanky hat can act as a portal to seal away evildoers, or to acquire anything she might need, like the trademark rabbit trick that any self-respecting magician can do. One time, she sealed the elemental menace, Allura, in a bottle.

Playing Cards

Fitting with her showgirl aesthetic, Zatanna carries a pack of playing cards with her. While normally used for her magic performances, they can also be used as sharp projectiles that can slice through metal, or to distract opponents.

Merlin Sprite

Bought from Cassandra Craft’s magical store and called “Gwydion”, he is one of the seven Imperishable Treasures created by the New Gods and is able to take any form. With him, Zee can be granted any wish. From having the power to match beings much powerful than herself such as Zor, to awakening the universe. Zatanna has kept him in safe storage ever since.

The Magic Book of I-Ching

An ancient magical book that belongs to the martial artist; I-Ching. With this book along with the Ting Tripod, she is able to control the forces of Black Magic. It also can null White Magic from working by even being near it.

Staff and Necklace

Given to her by her father and mother respectively. With them, she is completely in balance, to the point where she doesn't need to use her Logomancy any more. It also can focus energy to the point of briefly harming an Eclipso-hosted Spectre.

The Ruby of Life

Wonder Woman used the Ruby of Life (amplified by Mordru’s power) to make Zatanna and herself Chaos Lords. Chaos Lords are capable of using chaotic magic. If you’re wondering what chaotic magic is, it’s the action of forcing the universe to do what you want instead of merely requesting (as orderly magic would). She can use this magic outside of the Ruby of Life, however, she does not due to a promise to Zatara. As a Chaos Lord, Zatanna is capable of shattering the fundamental rules of reality, as well as tearing magic apart.

However, this Ruby was later removed from Zatanna’s arsenal. Even still, we are including it, as Sargon removed it from himself at Zatara’s request so that he could send it to Zatanna. While we will be letting her possess the Ruby in this blog, we will not be letting Zatanna or the Ruby keep Mordru’s enchantment, as Zatanna did not keep this amp for more than one issue.

Shadowcrest

The ancestral home of the Zatara family which Zatanna can access with just a few words. It houses the world's greatest collection of sorcerous arcana from the Soul Crystal which can peer into a person's inner soul, to the Demonography (which updates itself, freaky), to the Book of Maps which can open portals to all known dimensions and realities, to various magical doohickeys that can change reality on a whim. She can summon any of these items to her disposal just as easily. Like her own House of Mystery, it houses rooms of seeming impossibility, and can create servants that are actually magical manifestations of the house. In the case it is required, Zatanna can also banish people from Shadowcrest and conceal it from them.

Abilities

Scarlet Witch

Chaos Magic

Throughout Wanda Maximoff’s history, she has had many power sources. Whether that be a mutant gene or the High Evolutionary’s experimentation or even the Life Force. However, one that reappeared the most throughout all of the retcons was Chaos Magic. Turns out that when she was a child, Wanda was marked by the Elder God Chthon, who had the intentions of making Wanda his vessel so that he could possess her when grew up. This allowed her, from that point on, to tap into the insanely powerful cosmic force known as Chaos Magic. Chaos Magic was the first form of magic… the primordial glint of cosmic understanding and happenstance. It is not purely constructive or destructive. It is not bound by the concepts of good and evil. It’s the possibility of both, neither, and everything in between.

With Chaos Magic, Wanda holds an unprecedented control over all existence. Really, the only limit would be her belief. While she originally struggled to control her power, Wanda has become more experienced with the use of Chaos Magic, in no small part due to the help of Agatha Harkness. While events such as M-Day were a result of Wanda losing control over her Chaos Magic, she has rebuilt and redeemed herself by using that same Chaos Magic to save the world time and time again. Eventually, she was able to undo the effects of M-Day, and even use her powers to make mutantkind practically immortal.

Probability Manipulation

Back in her early days before the likes of Chaos Magic, Wanda was thought to have one power: probability manipulation. This aspect of her powerset, dubbed Hex Power, was thought to be Wanda’s mutant ability (in reality, that couldn’t be further from the truth).

Wanda’s hexes were stated to work via disrupting the fields of probability around her, originally giving her a very difficult to control power she often used on accident. However, given time, Wanda learned to properly control her ability.

Probability manipulation gives Wanda an insane level of field control when used properly, allowing her to turn the slightest chance into near certain fate. This can have all sorts of effects, like causing things to suddenly explode, having whole buildings collapse on people, impair vision by forcing one to view intense light, control technology and mess with their mechanisms, reflecting magic against the user, force people to lose their balance, cause storms to suddenly roll in, and turn sure hits into sad misses. She can find a bunch of missing people in a microscopic universe and amplify Janet Van Dyne’s superpowers to where she could shrink beneath planck length. It can even bypass magic at times.

The reason why Wanda’s probability manipulation is as overpowered as it is would be because of her role as a Nexus Being - a being who exists equally to all possible timelines - and as such, she has the ability to manipulate probability and thus, the future. They exist as a conduit for massive amounts of mystical energy as well as the focal point for all mystical energy in that specific universe, making them a cornerstone for the entire multiverse. Wanda can view how different probabilities play out and manipulate all alternate timelines of which there are a lot. Due to Wanda’s importance to the structure of reality because of her Nexus position, her very existence acts in opposition to the erasure of either herself or her powers.

Witchcraft

With Wanda’s confusing history filled with retcons, it would be no surprise to hear that in 2016, her powers got retconned again. While Chaos Magic came back very quickly, during her solo run, Wanda showcased an immense connection to Witchcraft, the source of the branch of magic known as well… witchcraft. Due to this, Wanda has a numerous amount of spells and abilities that aren’t connected to Chthon or his Chaos Magic. These include:

However, while it seems that Chaos Magic can levy the costs of magic to a certain degree, if not completely when used properly, spells casted by Wanda through her biological connection to Witchcraft do have a certain cost associated with them.

Martial Arts

Wanda isn’t solely reliant on her magic; she’s picked up formal combat training from the likes of Captain America and Hawkeye, making her very skilled. She’s been able to physically tangle with Lore, a Nexus being who was tearing through entire dimensions and universes.

Reality Warping

Scarlet Witch is one of the best reality warpers in Marvel. She can shape and mold reality in whatever way she sees fit, and from this ability alone, there are very few things Wanda cannot do. The laws of time, space, life, and death practically become inapplicable to her. Wanda’s true reality warping potential was shown in House of M, where she altered reality on an omniversal scale with only three words (see above).

Transmutation

Another useful power of Wanda’s, transmutation is a cinch for her to pull off in a fight. It can be something extremely simple like turning part of the ground into water, or something as advanced as transmuting force fields and rendering them useless for her foes.

Existence Erasure

One of Wanda’s most well known abilities is the ability to simply wipe somebody or something from existence with nothing more than a few words or sometimes nothing but just a thought.

Conceptual Manipulation

Being a blessing from Chthon, Chaos Magic is incredibly powerful, even forming a yin and yang duality with the Phoenix Force. As such, it is inherently conceptual in nature, and has been used to erase the Phoenix Force before, which has been stated to be an idea. Furthermore, Wanda can even manipulate chaos to such a degree, that she can affect the Inbetweener, who’s an abstract that represents the concept of concepts and walks the path between all concepts. Wanda forcefully merged his chaotic side with his orderly side.

Time Manipulation

Time, huh? thanks for the tip

Wanda has shown the ability to slow down, stop, and even travel through time. She can also cause a body to experience effects much later on in time, like causing its natural stress, fatigue, and withering in 5,000 years to occur in a matter of seconds. Additionally, Wanda can also see into the past or alternate timelines and even summon different versions of her from across time.

Teleportation

Wanda can teleport anywhere she wants to, including other dimensions. She can also use this ability offensively, such as the time she warped Namor away to a far away location.

Power Nullification

One of the most infamous moments in the Scarlet Witch’s history is when she strips the entire mutant population (across all reality) of their powers with three simple words. However, Wanda has showcased this power on numerous other occasions, including the time she went up against Blur in a warped version of Earth 616. Here, she was able to remove his speed.

Sleep Manipulation

A rather self explanatory power, Wanda can use her magic to knock her targets to sleep instantly. As shown above, she has been able to stop feuds between the likes of the Avengers and X-Men with this ability.

Biological Manipulation

Among Wanda’s plethora of abilities is the power to screw with natural biology. With it she can cure or inflict disease, heal people, cause instantaneous pain, and even rewrite people’s neural structures. Even weakened, Wanda can prolong people’s lifespans in spite of life threatening sickness.

Telepathy & Mind Control

Scarlet Witch is capable of entering other people’s mindscapes and manipulate those mindscapes in order to put them under her control. She used this against Shanna in order to free her from mind control. She can also bring people into other people’s mindscapes for assistance. Wanda has also shown the ability to steal abilities of individuals attacking her mind. An example of this would be Professor X.

Telekinesis

Wanda is capable of manipulating objects to throw at her enemies with one of her most impressive feats of telekinesis being the time she telekinetically pulled down a meteor on Kang the Conqueror.

Acausality

Due to her status as a Nexus Being, Wanda is a conduit for massive amounts of mystical energy. Being a Nexus means she’s a cornerstone for the entire multiverse and a focal point for the reality that she exists in. Because of this, the existence of both Wanda and her powers act in opposition with the erasure of both her powers and Wanda herself (shown above).

Energy Manipulation

Scarlet Witch can manipulate energy in various ways, though she often uses her energy manipulation powers to create beams of energy. These beams of energy are strong enough to one-shot a Phoenix Force empowered Magik and physically harm Dark Phoenix Cyclops, even as he was ascending to the level of the White Hot Room.

Element Manipulation

Scarlet Witch is capable of controlling elements such as fire, air, water, and earth. She is even capable of creating a wall composed of multiple elements.

Flight

Would Wanda really be a magic user if she couldn’t fly? She can levitate at will and fly at superhumanly fast speeds.

Forcefields

An extremely useful technique, Wanda is capable of making forcefields both out of hex spheres and regular magic. On top of being a typical damage-blocking forcefield, they can also protect against magical effects such as transmutative spells and energy bolts. At times, these shields have also been shown to passively appear, even when Wanda wasn’t looking.

Summoning

Scarlet Witch is capable of summoning beings in order to aid her in battle. She can even do this whilst in someone’s mindscape as shown when Wanda summoned Dormammu into Xavier’s mindscape. She also can summon magical weapons, such as a magical sword and shields, as well as a magical knave to aid her in combat.

Duplication

Wanda has been shown to be able to duplicate herself or others in the past.

Soul Manipulation

Scarlet Witch is capable of manipulating the souls of others. She has summoned souls, spoken to them, performed exorcisms, sealed away evil spirits, cut through ghosts, and even forced Lore to be bound to a physical body when she was fighting Wanda in her astral form.

Witchsight

With the “witch’s sight,” Wanda can see invisible beings, magical auras around them, as well as who they truly are. This allows Wanda to sense not only power but also someone’s personality, intentions, and true nature. It can also function as a sort of low-tier danger sense.

Resurrection

Stemming from her ability to play with reality in whatever way she so chooses, Wanda can bring the dead back to life, showcasing this power multiple times. Recently, she has even shown the ability to bring herself back to life after death. At one point Wanda was repeatedly killed, and brought back to life while within the Eldritch Orchard. Once she was able to finally remove all her guilt and forgive herself, she was able to reunite her past and future selves, and come back to the living world. As per Wanda’s own statement, she’d be able to find her own way back from death because she’s too out of reach for such a trivial thing. She stated that death would never be able to grasp her forever, making the Scarlet Witch effectively immortal.

Astral Projection

Scarlet Witch is capable of creating an Astral Projection of herself even when her body is unable to move or when she is unconcious. She demonstrated this during her encounter with Shanna.

Fusion

Wanda has shown the ability to fuse things with herself, binding them to her soul. She has done this with the Darkhold, taking up all the knowledge that the Darkhold provided as well as its power. This is made even more impressive when merely reading the Darkhold can corrupt one’s mind and soul as well as alter their physical body but Wanda was not affected.

Absorption

One of Wanda’s most useful abilities, she’s capable of absorbing energy in a variety of ways, whether that be growth energy, shockwaves, or other people’s magic. Wanda can even use this to absorb the superpowers of other people. A perfect example would be when Phil Coulson and Mephisto altered reality with the power of the Pandemonium Cube to turn Earth 616 into the Heroes Reborn universe, Quicksilver died in a race against Blur. Wanda then absorbed his speed and combined it with her own Chaos Magic. In a more recent scenario, Wanda was able to absorb Chthon into the Darkhold which she had bound to her soul. Not only did she absorb Chthon, but also all of his powers, making her the Goddess of Chaos.

Resistances

Zatanna

Logomancy

Logomancy is also known as “Backwards Magic.” Zatanna typically casts her magic spells by uttering a simple command, which is seemingly only bound by her imagination, except each word is said backwards. For example, “cast curse” would be invoked by “tsac esruc.” Difficult as that sounds, it’s second nature to Zatanna. It should be noted that she doesn’t always need to speak for her powers to work e.g. she has used sign language, writing, tapping, even just noises that sound like her voice or a text to speech toy before for the same effect. Zatanna speaks backwards in tribute to her father and previous ancestors in order to reduce the effect of the cost of magic.

Sorcery

Different from her logomancy, this was naturally inherited through her mother like most Homo Magi. With it she can cast magic without needing to utter words backwards, instead reciting a long passage (which just seems like more work) or simply thinking of the action in question, such as flight or transmuting matter around her. However, it doesn’t seem to be as potent, nor her preferred way of doing things.

Rune Magic

Zatanna is capable of utilizing runes in order to project images as shown when Zatanna uses a rune to project an image of the Upside Down Man in order to show the Justice League.

Other than the types of magic listed above, Zee also knows how to use White, Black, Semantic, Tantric, Sign and some degree of Chaos Magic amongst others.

Belief

In the DC universe, belief is the fundamental component of all magic. It is the concept that through believing in your magical ability, you can make miracles occur. Zatanna, when enhanced through the belief in herself, can turn a hopeless situation into a victory. This is best shown when she was able to completely turn the tables on the Upside Down Man, one of the most powerful magical entities in the DC universe.

Martial Arts

Zatanna has not only been trained in magic, but also various martial arts from a young age, such as Judo. After joining the Justice League, she has trained with both Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl, as well as gained a red belt in Martian Kung Fu.

Extrasensory Senses

Typical of most magic users, Zatanna is able to sense things normal people can't, such as seeing ghosts. She is also able to sense emotions, incoming threats, dark energy, magical residue, supernatural presence and even mystic emanations coming through telephone wires.

Automatic Translation

In case Zee fights someone who doesn’t speak english, she can supernaturally translate everything they and her say into their respective languages

Element Control

As Zatanna has been imbued with the four elements from birth, she is a big practitioner in elemental magic and therefore, has abilities such as weather control, pyrokinesis, hydrokinesis, cryokinesis, electrokinesis, geokinesis, aerokinesis, photokinesis, magnetism, and umbrakinesis. With these, she can respectively speak into existence the elements of fire, water, ice, lightning, earth, wind, light, and shadows. She can even control completely unique elements based in other dimensions.

Transmutation

One of Zatanna’s favorite tricks is to transmute others with her magic. She can turn monsters into harmless rabbits, Joker gas into oxygen, cloth into a snake then into flowers, a crowd of people into vampire bats, or even undo transmutation cast on others. Due to her continuous use, she has become potent enough to transmute objects without the use of her Logomancy.

Existence Erasure

By simply saying “hsinav” or “raeppasid”, she can seemingly erases the object or victim(s) she chose from existence but as potent as this ability can be though, it has been shown to fail on beings far more powerful than her.

Teleportation

Not only can she teleport herself out of sticky situations but also multiple people with her as well. She can also create portals for similar effects. She also has been shown to teleport without her Backward Magic/Logomancy

Dimensional Travel

Zatanna can open portals to other dimensions such as the Dream Dimension which can be used to BFR someone.

Telepathy & Mind Control

Zatanna has shown to be very proficient in telepathy, from reading people’s memories to communicating to others telepathically to erasing them (which she oddly has to continuously do to the Justice League and their enemies). Her mental resistances are similarly impressive. Zatanna also has the ability to control minds to do whatever she tells them to do such as when she made some soldiers turn on each other despite being in a dimension that heavily weakens her magic. Other uses of mental control outside the usual include paralyzing foes and even rewriting a person’s entire personality, however, the latter part has proven to yield… some unwanted consequences most of the time.

Telekinesis

Zatanna has showcased the ability to move heavy objects from a distance at numerous points, to the point of being capable of rebuilding the Rock of Eternity. She is even able to move objects with her mind without needing Logomancy.

Transformation

Zatanna is capable of transforming herself into various animals, such as a bird. She is also able to transform others as well, such as when she turned a successful investment broker into a female sex worker.

Sleep Manipulation

With a few simple words, Zatanna can put any matter of foes to sleep near instantaneously, or do the opposite by waking people up. It is powerful enough to work on being such as Martian Manhunter, however, it can be resisted by people with strong enough mental defenses.

Dream Manipulation

Zatanna is capable of entering the dreams of others, as well as manipulating their dreams to her whims.

Biological Manipulation

Zatanna is capable of altering biology like nothing. From aging or de-aging people or things, to removing parts from their body (as shown above).

Illusion Creation

With a few simple words (as per usual), Zatanna can create various illusions, from seemingly duplicating herself to changing appearances. These illusions are great enough to fool telepaths such as Despero, and if she ever faces an opponent with similar abilities, she can simply conjure a spell to negate them.

Invisibility

If she doesn’t want to be seen, she can turn herself or others invisible.

Resurrection

Zatanna is capable of reviving the dead, as shown during her past when she brought a bunny back to life. However, there is a cost: physical harm which Zatara takes upon himself.

Reality Warping

Zatanna can warp reality around her with her normal magic, as shown by her shutting down gravity, turning night into day, and turning rain into flowers, all before turning everything back to normal with just a backward word. However, when she is fighting at her fullest extent, she can warp reality to a even greater degree, as shown with her infamous fight against Zor where she was able to see an entire universe as dimensionally flat, and then warp reality through crumpling and tearing it up as if it was a piece of paper. Her power is so great that it affects the entire universe - and even more when counting Chaos Zatanna, who pulled apart reality on a transcendental level and shattered it.

Healing

Zatanna can use healing magic to heal herself and her allies. She can even heal spiritual beings such as ghosts.

Flight

While in her early years she had to use the wind to carry her around, she has since learnt to fly around without help, with just her mind.

Forcefields

Zatanna can create forcefields in order to protect herself or others against magical attacks. She also has a spell to reverse physical and magical attacks.

Size Manipulation

Zatanna has the ability to change her size, such as shrinking herself or doing the opposite. He can apply this to foes just as easily as well.

Probability Manipulation

Zatanna can manipulate luck as well as bad luck in order to make things go into her favor, or make things go poorly for whoever she wants. For example, making guns misfire, or robots malfunction

Life Manipulation

Another one of Zatanna’s favorite tricks is to bring inanimate objects to life, such as brass railing, a suit of armor, a rug, and more.

Time Manipulation

Zatanna can manipulate and bend time to her whim. She can do this through various ways: reversing time, slowing down time around herself, and even stopping time all together. She can even relive the past through simply touching objects. This is known as retrocognition, which she has displayed on a few occasions, she also can do the opposite by seeing into the future. She can also pull a Green Lantern and travel back in time, as well as send people back in time with her.

Soul Manipulation

Zatanna is able to manipulate the souls of others such as obliterating them, freeing them, dispelling spirits, moving them into different bodies and being able to consign souls (basically creating documents in order to manipulate souls).

Summoning

If Zatanna has trouble fighting against tougher opponents or needs a number advantage, she can summon various items, objects, mystic creatures or people to aid her. Notable summons she has used in the past include:

Astral Projection

Zatanna is capable of projecting an astral projection of herself which can enter people’s minds and dreams, and is fast enough to scan millions of people throughout the Earth in minutes. She can also choose to be intangible whilst in this form.

Absorption

With her magic, she can absorb various sources of power, from creating magical fireballs that can sap Supergirl's strength, to absorbing the Demons Three into herself for more power.

Fusion

Zatanna is capable of fusing with other beings as shown during her fight against the Upside Down Man where she fused with the Upside-Down Man, making her body and mind his own. However, if she fuses with beings as powerful as Upside-Down Man, the major downside is that her thoughts could be scattered across the mindscape of the being she is fused with. Zatanna can also have beings sealed within herself, as shown Diana seals the Upside-Down Man inside of her.

Resistances

  • Sound Manipulation: Successfully fought back against Anton Allegro’s music when the rest of the Justice League couldn’t, also survived multiple sonic shrieks from the Shrieker.

  • Possession: Has spells to protect herself or others from being possessed, can also remove the effects of possession with a spell.

  • Illusions: Can see through illusion with her extrasensory perception and can cast various spells to null the use of them.

  • Telepathy and Mind Manipulation: Zee’s mental powers are strong enough to throw even Martian Manhunter out of her mind and prevent him from entering it.

  • Power Absorption: Zatanna’s power will burn or stun anyone who tries to siphon and then directly transmit her powers into themselves. If she gives a normal person her powers they can go insane from the sheer vastness of it.

  • Most of her remaining logomancy spells: As Amazo with Zatanna’s powers could conjure a spell that allowed him to resist any of Zee’s spells, it’s not out of the question that she can replicate it as well (if someone were to copy her powers and use them against her). She is also able to undo spells just as easily. However, indirect attacks caused by spells can still bypass this.

Weaknesses

Scarlet Witch

While Wanda is incredibly powerful, she still suffers from serious mental weaknesses. Given the numerous traumatic events in her life, she can overall be rather mentally unstable, which can cloud her judgment or cause her to forget parts of her life. It was this weakness that brought about M-Day, for example. Wanda has improved significantly in dealing with this problem, but it can still resurface to haunt her from time to time.

Zatanna

Strangely enough, knowing how her powers work could cause them to stop working. Zatanna’s magic is also dependent on her speech, so if it was disabled one way or another, she can no longer use most of her spells. She does have ways around this problem, such as writing with her blood or using a different form of magic, but even then she still suffers from a huge opening a foe can take advantage of. She also normally doesn't go around with mystic defense up unless there's a specific reason for them which puts her in a vulnerable state most of the time. Some spells also don’t work on characters significantly more powerful than her.

“Ladies and gentlemen, you see what you want to believe. Illusion. Reality. What’s the difference? You are. Your perception. I know this because I’m magic. And what’s magic if not misperception or shadow of one’s self?”

Advantages:

  • Comparable speed

  • Likely more skilled than Wanda

  • Is more crafty with her spells than Wanda

  • Better control and mental state

  • Wider assortment of mythic items to her dispose

  • Belief magic could potentially net a win

  • Has faced powerful people similar to Wanda before

  • Hotter

Disadvantages:

  • Less powerful

  • Wanda’s probability manipulation could make it difficult to cast spells

  • Resurrection is not as good as Wanda’s

  • Cannot replicate Wanda’s Nexus powers

  • Zee most likely cannot erase Wanda from existence

  • Cost of certain magic may be too great for Zee to use said magic

  • Tape

  • Pre-Crisis Fashion

Cosmology

Marvel

Marvel has a vast cosmology. It starts out with a singular universe, infinite in size and then expanding into an infinite number of alternate timelines every quantum moment. With every subconscious and unconscious action and nonaction, an infinity of alternate timelines (universes) is generated. And then for every one of those universes, an infinite amount of alternate universes is generated over and over again, AD Infinitum. This simply starts from a single universe, turning into its own subsection of the multiverse. Each of these universes represents a manifestation body of Multi-Eternity. The greater multiverse is much, much bigger, already being described as infinite and even transfinite (an infinite series of infinite numbers, each greater than each other - this all starts with aleph-null, the baseline infinity). Atop the transfinitely-growing multiverse are an infinite number of spatial dimensions, even being referred to as planes of reality (of which there has been implied to be a transfinite number). And of course, Marvel being Marvel does not just have one multiverse, but rather an infinite number of multiverses and megaverses as well making up an omniverse.

This omniverse and all multiverses and universes within are kept separate by the multiversal Superflow which is conceptually transcended by the Superflow of Dreamtime or the “true” Superflow. This Superflow is a conceptual space that holds abstract, metaphysical concepts and archetypes that are beyond time, space, and form. The Superflow holds many layers such as the Microverse, Macroverse, Astral Plane, No-Space, and the Multiplane. The realm of abstracts, Overspace, sits within and atop the Superflow of Dreamtime. Otherworld sits separately from Overspace and contains pocket dimensions like Blightspoke which contains dead realities. Beyond the Superflow of Dreamtime would be the Neutral Zone which is also located between and beyond the multiverse. It is the edge of science but also so much more as it is an archetypal space for primal forms beyond that of the Superflow. Just as the Superflow views all underneath, the Neutral Zone views it. It is the final edge to the 8th Cosmos before it (Multi-Eternity of the 8th Cosmos) can be viewed as an infinitesimal speck within the Outside. Every iteration of Eternity grows more powerful than the previous one up until they ascend to their afterlife. The First Firmament is bigger than all though.

The Outside is the Beyond. It’s the outer dark - nonexistence in its purest form - it is Oblivion. Beyond even Oblivion lies the farthest Far Shore at the end of all things. This is the point at which the truest nature of Yggdrasil surrenders to, its aspects and aspects of aspects emanating into lower realms. Merely looking at the Far Shore from Oblivion is enough to drive one insane. It views everything below it as fictional ideas. It is conceptually beyond everything else, viewing everything underneath as mere comic books with conceptual ideas within it. It is the final step in the Marvel Cosmology before stepping into the unknown… into Mystery. The Mystery is the White Hot Room and the Above Place… the opposite to the Below Place of the One Below All. It is more like Heaven than any other heaven beneath, just as the Below Place is more like Hell than any hell above. The Mystery is where probability spawns from creationwhere the ideas of Marvel sink into from the tip of the author’s pencil. From the Mystery, one can gain Mysterium, a magic metal made up of primal Kirbons (named after Jack Kirby).

Beyond the Mystery is only the House of Ideas. It has many entrance points on Earth and is the core of all Marvel. From it comes everything that ever was, ever is, and ever will be. Anything that is even slightly relevant to Marvel stems from the House of Ideas, whether it be canon or noncanon. Even fanfiction and headcanon are parts of the House, for the dreams of true believers of Marvel become reality within the House. From it, infinite stories are born. It contains all characters, all stories, all ideas, and all concepts. Nothing in Marvel is beyond the House, except for its true creator, the One Above All, who is Marvel’s “omnipotent” God and the representation of all of Marvel’s writers, editors, readers, artists, and fans.

Of course, with Marvel being as large as it is, this is absolutely nothing to the truest scope of what it truly contains. Especially without the help of a canonical cosmology map! For more information, you can visit https://topstrongest.fandom.com/wiki/Marvel_Cosmology

DC

When you think of cosmology, it’s hard to think of a franchise that’s spent more time delving into the deepest roots of what should be than DC. It all starts out with a simple point. A single, infinite universe that expands into infinity. 52 universes that function as the “main multiverse” and then an infinite number more in the grander scope within the greater multiverse. Of all of these universes, Prime Earth represents the “main universe.” It is the universe from which every “main” change is caused. It is the metaverse. From it and every other universe surrounding it comes an infinite number of universes and timelines that branch off with every event and non-event. This happens every moment, on and on and on.

This multiverse and all other infinite multiverses exist within the Orrery of Worlds. This Orrery is entangled in Bleedspace, the lifeblood of the multiverse. The Bleed separates universes. Ultramenstrum, a component of Bleed, is recognized by even the Monitors and respected for its immense healing properties. The Orrery and the Bleed contain not just infinite universes and multiverses but also an innumerable amount of spatial dimensions. Atop both of these would be the Speed Force which exists across every dimension and connects to DC’s “timestream,” a cosmological location which connects all timelines across all universes, multiverses, and dimensional planes together.

Beyond the Speed Force would be the Sphere of the Gods. This is a conceptual realm that houses archetypal entities of jungian or platonic-like nature. The Sphere of the Gods formed out of pure possibility around Hecate. It’s the home to all spiritual and mystical energies in the multiverse, and its residents are powered by belief. Beyond the Sphere of the Gods would be the Collective Unconscious. Comic Book Limbo is another realm that exists beyond the Sphere of the Gods, containing characters long-forgotten. There is no time in Limbo and there are no stories. Beyond even Limbo is the Monitor Sphere which houses Nil, the home of the Monitors. In the Monitor Sphere, everything is realer than real. It is more profound. It is archetypal from an archetypal view as it houses primal forms such as the Monitors. This is where form and meaning surrender to the Overvoid.

Beyond this would be the World Tree (also called Yggdrasil), which birthed elemental sources such as the Green and the Red. Its antithesis would be Maha Pralaya, the void of nonexistence that preceded creation.

What lies next would be the Source Wall. The Source Wall is the edge of DC’s entire creation and then some. It is an omnipresent border that emanates across all universes, multiverses, and dimensions in DC. It is the final edge before all realms on the map become one with the Overvoid. However, there is a possibility that the 6th Dimension of Perpetua is beyond the Source Wall but this has been kept vague by DC. Beyond all things in DC though is the Presence. He is the ultimate creator of all things in DC. Even his opposite and his unconscious simply are a part of his eternal being. The Source is his energy and the Overvoid is the canvas upon which this energy is expelled to create all things.

As amazing as DC’s cosmology is, this is merely the tip of the iceberg. For more information, please do visit: https://vsbattles.fandom.com/wiki/User_blog:PrinceOfTheMorning/DC_Cosmology_-_From_a_Holistic_Stance_on_the_Overall_Canon

Commonly Asked Questions

1) Are you accounting for the fact that both characters are going through major plotlines in the comics at the moment?

It was an exhilarating process. There was a lot of information to cover and we tried our best to get through as much as possible. The fact that both characters are going through many changes right now is quite problematic timing for the episode to drop as things could very well change tomorrow. We as a group decided to keep things as much to date as possible. There may be things included in this blog that Death Battle will most likely not present as they’re too recent. Even still, we wanted to get as much of an updated look as possible.

2) Why was Scarlet Witch given scaling and abilities she showcased during Avengers Disassembled, House of M, and Children’s Crusade? Did she not have the Life Force amp?

Wanda indeed did have the Life Force, however, a common misconception is that she needed the Life Force to be that powerful. While there was a point in Marvel continuity where Wanda was retconned to not be as powerful as she was during House of M, the original storyline had it so that Wanda rewrote reality using her power and nothing else. It was something she could naturally do in the right situation. This retcon also didn’t stick. While some writers brought up how Wanda might not be able to naturally redo something on the level of M-Day, it was constantly contradicted in canonical sources. It wasn’t just a specific character or a specific writer but Marvel as a whole could not stay consistent. We had a statement from the narration saying that it was Wanda’s Chaos Magic that rewrote the natural order of things. We have a statement from Wanda herself stating that she ill-used her own power. Doom himself states that he once abused Wanda’s power and that with even a small portion of what he had taken before, he could undo nearly any event in his own history. Hell, the Life Force retcon intended to make it so that Wanda wasn’t a reality warper under her own general powerset. That absolutely did not stick. While this is a secondary source, it is from an official Marvel account and it states that M-Day was a result of Wanda using her Chaos Magic to its fullest potential. Even in the case that the feats performed by Wanda during this time period were restricted, Wanda has performed several feats since then that would be higher than what she did on M-Day. This is besides the point though as under Death Battle’s own ruleset, they would most likely give her House of M feats (previous episodes to support this would be Thanos VS Darkseid and Ghost Rider VS Lobo). Granted, WE DO NOT SPEAK FOR DEATH BATTLE. This is simply G1’s perspective.

3) Why was Goddess of Chaos mentioned for Wanda but Otherkind Zatanna wasn’t for Zee?

DC has made a very clear implication that Zatanna no longer has the Upside-Down Man inside of her as the Great Darkness has taken the Upside-Down Man back. Wanda on the other hand defeated Chthon and sealed him away inside of the Darkhold (which she had bound to her soul). She then took all of his powers for herself. Even when Zatanna had the powers of the Upside-Down Man, she couldn’t properly use his, or quite frankly, her own powers effectively without the fear of the Upside-Down Man possessing her. Wanda on the other hand defeated Chthon herself and told him that he no longer possesses her but rather that she possesses him. His power is her power and his book is now her book. She is now the new Elder Goddess of Chaos and Madness. She now has all Chaos Magic in the multiverse. If it was merely a matter of Chthon possessing Wanda, we would not have given this power to her. This isn’t Chthon VS The Upside-Down Man (as entertaining as that would be). It’s Scarlet Witch VS Zatanna. Even then, the Goddess of Chaos form was barely mentioned for Wanda and most of this blog that accounts for her section speaks about other feats and scaling. Zatanna was also given certain artifacts which she does not own (Ruby of Life) and some scaling which she did not perform alone and could not replicate in a normal setting. Not to mention that the people who argued for Wanda argued for Wanda discounting having Chthon’s powers.

4) What’s the deal with the Chaos Wave?

It is a result of “M-Day” where the changes to reality caused a wave of chaotic energies to burst forth from Earth 616 and crash through the omniverse, causing an immense amount of damage to realities, dimensions, and entire planes of existence. On its own, it technically doesn’t scale to Wanda but “No More Mutants” explicitly affected the omniverse as well, even blinking reality out into the White Hot Room for a small moment of time and pushing the Phoenix Force via the spell. The best thing that the Chaos Wave did was affect Otherworld which exists beyond all creation. The White Hot Room is the core of creation all while birthing creation(s). It’s the heart of the multiversal Phoenix Force and the fact that it could affect such massive entities and cosmological structures would put “No More Mutants” on approximately the same tier. Not to mention that Wanda has since performed better feats such as fighting Chaos.

5) Does Zatanna scale to the Presence by defeating the Upside-Down Man?

No. The Presence is far more powerful than not just the Upside-Down Man but literally every character Zatanna has ever fought. Zor, Pralaya, Mordru, Raven, and Nabu are included in that.

6) Whose cosmology is bigger? Marvel or DC?

They’re both around the same size and it doesn’t even matter. The answer doesn’t even remotely affect who wins and who loses. They’re both very powerful but it wouldn’t matter if Marvel is bigger or DC is bigger. Unless you think one is so much bigger than the other that something like the Superflow would solo DC or that the Sphere of the Gods would solo Marvel (neither of which would happen), this answer doesn’t matter. And since both are false, the victor is not reliant on this.

7) But the biggest question of them all… how is this gonna end up aging 😉

Team Scarlet Witch

Stats

Wanda Maximoff is one of the most powerful characters that we’ve gotten in Death Battle so far. As a baseline, she should be at least multiversal+, and being multi+ in Marvel can be insane. Marvel’s multiverse is transfinite, which means that it’s extremely layered into that tier. Now, that being said, she can get far higher. During House of M, Scarlet Witch said “No More Mutants.” This massively altered reality on an omniversal scale, weaving through all universes, multiverses, and timelines. In fact, Marvel’s universe proliferate infinitely every moment with anything you do or simply put, you might not need to do anything at all. There are an infinite number of possibilities for every action and unaction performed that spawn as new realities but even then, the possibility of mutants flatlined in those timelines. The spell wove itself through all creation. Granted, Zatanna also has multiversal+ feats, but they’re not as layered as Wanda’s. DC’s cosmology also proliferates infinitely, but it isn’t transfinite as a baseline. There is also the Chaos Wave that was unleashed when Wanda warped reality across Earth when a surge of chaotic spatiotemporal energy burst forth from Earth 616. While this wasn’t directly intentional on Wanda’s part, it was very impressive nonetheless as it could reach Otherworld which transcends the multiverse (is separate from Multi-Eternity yet connected), acting as a connection point for all realities. Now, some may argue that the Chaos Wave shouldn’t be applied to Wanda as it’s debatably not her power and merely a side effect of House of M. “No More Mutants” would still be at least multiversal+ and has very strong footing for higher dimensional or straight up beyond dimensional arguments (affecting higher dimensions, pushing the Phoenix Force in the White Hot Room, and crumpling reality down to the White Hot Room).

And now with Chthon’s powers, Wanda is even more ludicrous as Chthon is an Elder God and the greatest of them all. He should be on par with Gaea who gave Hercules a fraction of her power to fight the Chaos King… you know, the guy on par with Multi-Eternity! Not just that but Chthon would also scale above the likes of Shuma Gorath who’s an aspect of Oblivion, just like the Chaos King! Even before this, Wanda could fight beings like Chaos with some help while magic itself was weakened. She could also harm Nyx, who was playing with skyfathers and causing damage to abstract realms. Really, even if you give Zatanna everything she’s done, it would come up short. The Upside-Down Man and Chaos would cancel out with Chthon but as far as Nyx goes, she’s above them all.

Next, we move onto speed. These two might not seem like speedsters but they’ve certainly got some good scaling. In Wanda’s case, she even has some very interesting feats. Zatanna should bare minimum scale to DC herald speed feats which can range anywhere from quintillions of times faster than light to straight up immeasurable speed. Hell, if you scale Zatanna to speedsters or a Superman at his absolute, absolute best, you’d be scaling her to speed feats so potent that they break and transcend the very concept of speed itself. This is DC we’re talking about so that’s no surprise. The question is, can Wanda match this? And the answer is yes. Yes, she can. Marvel herald speed feats also range from quintillions of times lightspeed to immeasurable but in most of those cases, they do fall short of DC. Not in this case though. Wanda has amplified Quicksilver’s speed to where he could run beyond space, time, and reality. And at one point, she even amplified her own speed there to match that of Quicksilver’s. Wanda can keep up with characters like Thor & Doctor Strange who have immeasurable speed feats and just like Zatanna, if you go with some higher up speed scaling, you can get Wanda to a point where her combat speed breaks and transcends the very concept of speed itself.

With all of Chthon’s powers, she definitely scales to that point considering he’s from the void beyond space and time (he’s from Oblivion - the Outside).

And now onto durability. Wanda might seem like a glass canon at first, but she does have some pretty good feats of durability. She’s taken hits from Doctor Doom and more impressively, the Chaos entity who was stated to be beyond the Chaos King and on par with Eternity. Considering the Chaos King is equal to the 7th Cosmos iteration of Multi-Eternity if not more powerful, it’d make sense that this was the 8th Cosmos of Multi-Eternity and not an M-Body. If all else fails though, Wanda does have her force fields, which can tank attacks from characters like Namor with the Phoenix Force. Her magic is also on par with the Phoenix Force, which means that you can scale her at her best to Green Phoenix & Dark Phoenix’s feats. Considering the Phoenix Force can affect the entire multiverse on higher dimensional levels and even planes of reality beyond that, I’d say Wanda with her shields is absolutely insane. But if you need one more example, let’s look at Avengers: No Road Home #9. Here, Wanda protects herself and her friends from the light of the House of Ideas… the birthplace of everything (with a capital E) in Marvel. It’s beyond Heaven and as far as we know, it’s the highest point in the Marvel Cosmology. It’s where the One Above All lies and from her, infinite stories are brought forth into existence. It doesn’t matter if it’s canon, noncanon, fanfiction, or headcanon. It’s all within the House. Wanda. Blocked. That. Light. To make it less of an outlier, she actually has a connection to the House, which is proven in Loki (2019) where it shows that every character technically has a connection when they’re summoned to the House to make a deal with Then & Now. Whichever way you slice it, this feat trumps all of Zatanna’s and worst case scenario, makes for a great hax resistance mention.

Arsenal and Abilities

In terms of abilities. Wanda has a nearly identical set of potent abilities that Zatanna has. Reality warping, transmutation, time manipulation, energy absorption, power siphoning, telekinesis, telepathy, soul manipulation and even probability manipulation; you name it. These mistresses of magic come quite packed with haxes and not just stats so they will much cancel out each other’s abilities and haxes.

However Wanda’s probability manipulation appears to often have higher showings than that of Zee’s, often manipulating the laws of physics and reality. So it is probably safe to say that Wanda is much more experienced in this field of power then Zatanna, which allows her to capitalize on Zee’s inherent weakness. Since Zatanna requires her speech to be able to perform her more powerful spells, Wanda’s manipulation of probability can interfere with her. While Zee has gotten around this weakness for many decades using sign languages and gestures, she would also still need her hands to be able to perform her spells – something Wanda can also prevent with her probability manipulation. So while this isn’t gonna be a massive hindrance to Zatanna’s performance in this Death Battle, this is something that Wanda can still use to put her at a disadvantage to gain a leg up on her.

On top of all that, Witch Sight gives Wanda the ability to read Zatanna and learn what her next course of actions are in battle, acting as a mini-precognition. Thus it allows Wanda to slightly stay ahead of the game and prepare possible countermeasures to Zatanna’s tactics. It is also unlikely that Zatanna could permanently kill Wanda, due to the Eldritch Orchard, Nexus protection, resistances, and Wanda’s ability to self-resurrect - even from potential erasure.

Cosmetics (Intellect, Experience, etc.)

Overall, Team Wanda does have to admit that Zatanna is likely the more skilled and intelligent fighter of the two. However, the Scarlet Witch is still able to hold her own in many important fields outside of stats. Scarlet Witch is likely the more experienced fighter, having engaged in many high-stakes battles. While Zatanna’s fight with the Upside-Down Man is an important factor, while it does seem Zee should take this, it should be noted that Wanda has battled beings such as Nyx; a goddess born before creation itself and literally holds it due to having a literal primordial Lovecraftian god inside of her which has existed for billions of years.

Sounds familiar, ey? Similar to Doctor Strange vs Doctor Fate (but, y’know, like, the reverse). Funny enough, that’s not the only thing similar to that episode. As steed before, The Queen of Chaos also has the advantage in casting the majority of her spells non-verbally, while many of Zee's require her to speak backwards. Once Wanda figures that out, she could cut that source off with various spells, from binding to just removing her mouth entirely. While Zatanna does have ways around this, it does leave a big opening for which Wanda can exploit, and does overall lower the potency of her abilities and power for that time being.

Overall, Zatanna’s combination of pure knowledge, creativity, and unpredictability will ensure she’s never out of options, giving Wanda a fight unlike any others she had before. However, she is not completely unexploitable, as we consistently see.

Zatanna might be among the most creative and unpredictable fighters Wanda has faced, but this problem can still be handled. It is debatable if Zatanna has the same level of power that someone like Nyx does, and even then she will still have to get past Wanda’s unique probability manipulation. Wanda has spent much of her life enhancing and mastering her craft, and those experiences give her the edge in manipulating probability. It is far more likely that Scarlet Witch will be able to manipulate the odds in her favor than Zatanna will.

Furthermore, Wanda’s mental weakness is no longer the significant threat it used to be for her. While she still struggles with trauma on occasion, she has gotten much better at handling her weaknesses and keeping herself and her powers under control. It is very unlikely she will fully lose control anymore, allowing for her to be able to fight at her best throughout the fight and not be as easily manipulated. What’s more, Witch Sight will enable Wanda to have some warning of Zatanna’s behavior, making it that much more difficult for Zatanna to mentally manipulate the fight.

While it’s very unlikely, no, nearly impossible it would come down to this, both are pretty equal when comes to close-quarter-combat, Zatanna has been trained by various Justice League members such as Hawkgirl and whilst Wanda has been trained by various Avengers memes such as Captain America who’s y’know Captain America. Again, it’s 99.9999999 (need more nines) % not going to come down to this, it should be still noted.

Overall, Zatanna will likely be the smarter and slightly more skilled and creative combatant. However, she is ultimately outclassed by Wanda’s experience and is not on the same level of certain foes the Scarlet Witch has battled in her past. Combined with Wanda now having far more control and skill with her powers and ability to have a head’s up on any traps Zatanna might be planning, it will be immensely difficult for Zatanna to use her advantages to turn the tide in her favor. On the other hand, Wanda can use her probability manipulation, superior combat experience, and precognition to always keep the fight going in the direction she desires and claim the day.

Conclusion

Overall, this is a fairly even fight, and it’s possible for either combatant to take the victory here. Wanda and Zatanna can use and replicate a lot of the same abilities and counters. Both can control the elements, both can slow down, stop, and travel through time. Both can warp reality to their whim, and travel through different dimensions. Hell, both can manipulate probability and luck itself, as well as negate others of their powers. There’s not much these two can’t do, however when looking at the bigger picture, Wanda takes more useful advantages to net her the win. Her probability manipulation is way more layered and has better uses than Zatanna’s, as she can do anything Zatanna has done with it, but more. She can counter Zatanna’s spells, or even just reverse them onto her like she did to Enchantress. She can make Zatanna lose her balance and miss her spells by changing the direction of them, or making them lose momentum, and she can overall interfere with a lot of Zatanna’s attacks with probability manipulation. Even beyond that, she has the better resistances without needing a specific spell, and her power nullification and existence erasure inherently have better showings than Zatanna (via erasing the Phoenix Force and nullifying mutants of their powers across the entire multiverse

This makes it so that in a scenario where they’re comparable in stats, which would occur here as Wanda and Zatanna are immeasurable in speed, possibly higher, and Multi+, with being able to affect infinite dimensions at their peak with dimensional tiering, Wanda would have the edge. This is without mentioning Wanda absorbing Chthon and the Darkhold into her soul, making her essentially have a whole Elder God’s worth of experience in her, as well as Chthon’s power and spells. It’s also not mentioning the Eldritch Orchard allowing Wanda to practically become immortal, as if Zatanna ever kills her, Wanda will just come back to life within it, and be able to transport herself back to Earth to continue the fight. Wanda is also no slouch in skill, being trained by Cable and Captain America, so she isn’t too far behind in that department either. Overall, while Zatanna may have some potent hax on her side, especially with belief hax, Wanda has the experience, counters, resistances, and resurrection to ultimately gain the win.

Team Zatanna

Stats

Like with Wanda, Zatanna is easily among one of the most powerful characters ever featured on Death Battle, on a scale that is difficult to put into words. She’s been stated several times to be the single strongest member of the Justice League, surpassing characters like Superman, Wonder Woman, Wally West, Kyle Rayner and Shazam, who are all easily Multiversal+ and shatter space, time and reality constantly. Like with Marvel, there’s infinite layers of infinite infinities and dimensions, and Zatanna is able to unthink all of it out of existence by sheer power of belief (more on belief in a bit).

Her powers extend past the Bleed, which is a fifth dimensional space, and was the biggest contributor to buffing Shazam to the extent that he could fight off the Spectre, the Agent of God’s Divine Justice. She’s on par with Zor, an enemy of the Spectre, who is a being that exists outside of the multiverse on such a transcendental level that he can fundamentally patch and sew the fabric of the entire universe. In that same fight, Zee was able to see all of reality as a piece of paper; she then crumpled it up, and was able to ascend to an even higher realm.

Zatanna could also amplify Spectre’s power to such a degree that he could evenly fight the Anti-Monitor, who was going to destroy not just the infinite multiverse, but also concepts undreamt by God himself. Plus, with the Ruby of Life, Zee could seal Nabu within his helmet, a character capable of destroying the entire Sphere of the Gods, and she could view reality on a transcendental level, before shattering it completely.

Not to mention when she was able to hold off Pralaya, the void that existed before all of creation, or the Upside-Down Man, who is a being of abstract horror manifested to be the embodiment of the dark potential of magic. Both characters are easily above the conceptual level, and oppose the very beings that began the creation of DC. It takes beings like the Presence to stop Pralaya, so if Zee can hold her off at all, it should speak volumes of her power.

Feats like these easily match up to those performed by Wanda, but, ever the magician, Zatanna does have another ace up her sleeve. Belief. Essentially, anything Zatanna wishes to make happen, will happen, as long as she believes in it. With the power of belief, she was able to beat the Upside-Down Man, and could merge their beings into one, before she killed him. Their strength is already extremely comparable, but anything Wanda pulls to get the edge over Zee, she can match and surpass with belief.

In terms of speed, Zatanna’s comparable to other Justice League members who all have insane showings, such as Hal Jordan crossing the universe in a heartbeat at over 9.4 duodecillion times faster than light, or Superman, Wonder Woman and Hal Jordan breaching the Speed Force with their sheer speed. Other feats include Superman flying fast enough to push through the barriers of time, space, memory, and emotion, Shazam fling to the Rock of Eternity which is beyond time and space, or Doctor Fate moving through the universe at the “velocity of god” and traveling through quantum singularities into realms of dialectical space and meta-time, all of which are immeasurable.

However, she can get even faster. Like scaling to Superman, who can travel through Limbo to the main universe through several cosmological realms to destroy reality-blitzing missiles before Lois’ heart could beat once, or could react to Barry Allen as he was running the conceptual embodiment of death and breaking the limit of speed on a metaphysical level, both of which are feats which render the concept of “speed” irrelevant. Wanda can scale to a few of these kinds of feats, but Zatanna is more consistently faster when regarding measurable speed, has more examples of being on par with characters of immeasurable/irrelevant speed, and can still boost herself through belief.

Durability scales back to Zee’s strength, and while she may look like a glass cannon, she can definitely take some hits. Like when she fought Lobo and Star Sapphire, and not only her magic, but her physical body could survive their attacks just fine. She’s taken blows from Kryptonians before, and other comparable characters like Wonder Woman. Hell, Zee survived multiple sonic shrieks from the Shrieker, whose shrieks are even more powerful than Black Canary's sonic cry, and Canary was able to blow up Amazo while he’d copied the powers of JLA heavy-hitters like Superman.

She’s taken blasts from Nabu, the Lord of Order who empowers Doctor Fate, and a magically-empowered doppelganger of herself created by Choloh. She’s carved herself a new mouth when hers was magically taken away, and proceeded to cast spells immediately after like it was no big deal! She was even fine after being shot in the throat, so she’s definitely far tougher than you’d think. Wanda does have showings similar to Zatanna, but she’s far less tolerant to pain, and has been disoriented by Hope Summers headbutting her. Once more, all of this can be boosted with Belief.

Arsenal and Abilities

As stated before, Zatanna and Wanda’s powers are so alike, they could pull off a switcheroo trick, and no one would notice. They’ve both got so many ways to end the fight with just their different powers alone, it’s crazy. Unfortunately, this does sort of mean that many of them do cancel each other out, so it seems to leave the fight coming down to the smaller details. An argument focused on Zatanna being able to speak fast might seem silly at first, but given their measurable speed feats, Zatanna seems to hold the advantage there, and while Scarlet Witch might hold the other two, Zatanna’s list of hax is one of the most impressive lineups in all of DC Comics.

While again, most of them do seem to cancel out, Zatanna has a slight edge: Scarlet Witch can only operate on a cellular level, while Zatanna has been shown to affect things on a molecular level, which gives her a more stable level of precision that Scarlet Witch doesn’t have. Given that she’s been able to either recover from mind attacks before, or do what she does best by reappearing after a disappearing act, and that she’s been shown to stay focused and practice several forms of meditation, there’s no doubt that Zatanna would be able to stay focused on what she needs to do, in order to undo Scarlet Witch’s probability manipulations.

With her time as a stage magician, Zatanna also definitely knows about manipulation. Sleight of hand, prestidigitation, and of course, the very laws of magic, and how they work in the DC universe. Given her skill level, there is very little chance that Zatanna wouldn’t be able to just reverse whatever sort of hex or probability manipulation Wanda could throw at her, and possibly even reflect it back at her.

On top of that, Zatanna has also been able to resist mind tricks before, such as when she entered Circe’s Pandora Pit, which forced even John Constantine to bend to her will, so any possible mind reading Scarlet Witch could try to pull wouldn’t work, thus giving Zatanna an edge in unpredictability and strategy. On top of that, while Zatanna can cast magic no problem without her wand, her hat can also be used to seal Wanda away, or to literally pull anything she needs out of it, already adding to her unpredictable nature.

Cosmetics (Intellect, Experience, etc.)

Being one of the most prominent sorcerers of the DC universe, Zatanna is bound to have some serious experience and skill. She’s been stated to know thousands of individual spells (although at this point, it’s more likely that she just says stuff and it happens, as opposed to each one of her magic uses being a preexisting spell). She’s also a skilled stage magician and an escape artist, being capable of doing magic tricks even without actually using magic. She traveled the world and even mentored many other powerful DC magicians, including Timothy Hunter, perhaps the most powerful magic user in all of DC. Zatanna does not just know how to utilize sorcery, she knows the fundamental laws of magic along with the very DC multiverse.

Zee is not just a magic bookworm though. As opposed to being DC book 1 Hermione Granger, a magical know-it-all, she often utilizes her magic in a strange, creative, even wacky way. Wanda is not very far behind her in magical skill, but she has little experience with someone so unpredictable. Zatanna knows her strengths and weaknesses, and has numerous ways to go around the letter. Vast majority of time, her seemingly crippling weakness of relying on her speech is easily bypassed by her, from cutting a gag in her mouth with a conveniently placed sharp object, to carving herself a new mouth with a knife after it was magically removed. Ok, that one was just gross.

Mind games, both literally and figuratively, are no stranger to Zee either. She knows when she’s overwhelmed and acts accordingly. For instance, she defeated a man reversing her speech in time, therefore making it not backwards and useless, by using palindromes, phrases that are read the same backward and forward. Against Wanda, she could try to minimize the AP disadvantage by challenging or even manipulating the Scarlet Witch into a belief battle, with her magical knowledge having a good chance to come out on top.

Conclusion

In conclusion, if Zatanna is able to get onto Scarlet Witch’s level of power through her defeat of the Upside-Down Man, then she will likely win through her use of experience and versatility. While Scarlet Witch does have a varied moveset, the sheer amount of things that Zatanna can do will eventually overwhelm Scarlet Witch if they are at a similar amount of power and Zatanna’s healing will allow her to keep in the battle longer than Scarlet Witch in the fight ends up in a long battle since Zatanna will be able to constantly heal herself in order to mitigate the damage. For Scarlet Witch to fully beat her, she will need to be able to erase her completely, and fortunately for Zatanna, her fight against the Upside-Down Man proves that she has existence erasure protection. This means that Scarlet Witch won’t be able to erase Zatanna so easily.

Finally, if this comes to a battle of belief, then Zatanna is likely going to come out on top due to her faith in herself and her magical abilities. Scarlet Witch’s mental state will often cause her to doubt herself and her abilities. Meanwhile, Zatanna also took out foes that are comparable to Nexus level beings such as Zor and the Upside-Down Man, so being a Nexus Being wouldn’t impact this fight too heavily. All in all, if both are comparable in power, then Zatanna takes this through her greater survivability, stronger belief in herself, and better versatility.

Also keep in mind that this is all subjective opinion, we are not DEATH BATTLE and it’s very likely that DEATH BATTLE as well as other content creators, other fans will come to different conclusions then us. This was based on the research we conducted for this fight. Anyway, despite this matchup being a very complex one, I hope you enjoy this blog and are looking forward to whatever the next matchup is - it will probably end up being far less complex then this one.

  3. "Used it to block the light of creation"

Umm, no, she didn't. You can clearly see that her spell did absolutely nothing. Hawkeye and Rocket were just instantly erased, as easily as Conan and Banner were before she used her magic. Those that did remain were in agony, and only survived cause they were immortal.

  4. "5) Does Zatanna scale to the Presence by defeating the Upside-Down Man?

No. The Presence is far more powerful than not just the Upside-Down Man but literally every character Zatanna has ever fought. Zor, Pralaya, Mordru, Raven, and Nabu are included in that."

Wrong, wrong, wrong. Zatanna defended against the Great Evil Beast after it killed her father, and was able to defend herself against several attacks from it. And the Great Evil Beast scales either to, or above, The Prescence.

    1. Yeah, Upside Down Man is actually beyond the Presence because he scales to Hecate who is also beyond the Presence to.

  5. "DC has made a very clear implication that Zatanna no longer has the Upside-Down Man inside of her as the Great Darkness has taken the Upside-Down Man back. Wanda on the other hand defeated Chthon and sealed him away inside of the Darkhold (which she had bound to her soul). She then took all of his powers for herself."

No, actually, this was never once stated. It was only stated it was bound inside her, nothing in the slightest indicated she took his power, and no subsequent issue has displayed her as having any more power.

    1. Yeah, the people of Chthon thought she absorbed all of his powers for herself but, she said that she is trapped in her.

  6. I really thought Zatanna was gonna win through scaling to DC heralds. I guess DC heralds aren't always better than Marvel heralds.

Though, I shouldn't be too surprised. We had Iron Man beat Hellbat armor Batman and Dr Doom beat Lex Luthor. Anything's possible.

  7. "Affected the entire Marvel multiverse including all timelines"

Gee, weird how the 1610 universe is somehow not part of the Marvel multiverse, given it was not affected.

  8. "Wanda harmed Nyx, the Greek Elder Goddess who at her weakest could cause disturbances in the Far Shore by her presence alone."

Umm, no, Monica Rambeaux hurt Nyx. Without Monica severely weakening Nyx, Wanda did nothing whatsoever

  9. This suck wanda has no counter on Zatanna's Transmutation and also Upside Down Man literally erase Zatanna and eventually return in JLD vol 2#26

  10. And Zatanna weakness is put a gag on her mouth while Wanda has more weakness she is Mentally unstable, Her power can ve useless if she gets chains, or can't perform gesture, and also wanda has been Defeated more than Zatanna lol.

    1. I'm pretty sure it has been shown and stated multiple times by now that Scarlet Witch has gotten over most of her mental issues, including in this blog itself. Doubt it will affect her or lead to her defeat if she does lose to Zatanna.

    2. No lol zatanna has been beaten way more times

    3. Wanda doesn't need to perform gestures to use her reality warping/probability control, that's just an easier way (much like how a Jedi doesn't need to wave/use their hands to use the force, but it's an all around easier method for them).

  14. Zatanna should win since Zatanna has the advantage of Transmutation and yes Wanda has Transmutation but she can't affected a living being unlike Zatanna she turned people into Bats, Rabbit, Stone, Gold, Dust and both can warp reality

    1. She has literally affected living beings

    2. I never seen Scarlet Witch Transmutation can affect on living being except her reality warping who erase people

    3. Scarlet witch Transmutation can't affect on living being only an objects and elements unlike Zatanna

    4. Wanda can. And Wanda can reverse the affect to Zatanna too.

  15. Zatanna speak "POTS" and wanda can't perform her powers because she needs gesture.

    2. Not how SW's powers work. Her powers are multiversal and are protected through her powers as a Nexus being, mean her reality warping supersedes any and all other powers (and is why there can only ever be one nexus being per universe). Then add in her probability control on top of reality warping, and if Zatanna used that, it would have been reversed and used on her instead (which is something we see SW doing ALL the time in comics and shows).

  16. I don't hate Zatanna and the fight was great, but the result of its self was just dumb in my opinion. The feat that Scarlet Witch did was only 95% of mutants, while somehow Zatanna spell could works 100%? That made no sense, especially since the SW spell effected not one, but multiverses. Plus, this fight was done before the new stuff like the Trial and Darkhold was added, so the SW feats would have trump Zatanna. Also aware both absorb eldritch gods, but SW had full control while Zatanna was force to limit herself, else the evil being gain control. In the end, know that DB isn't end all be all, as proven that characters develop still continue on and different result will come, but I rather agree on G1 here than the one official DB gave.

  18. In that link of Zatanna being amped and saying here magic is more powerful there is an amp.

No that is false. She used the power of belief to make her magic powerful. Upside Down Man was the one in control of the Otherworld to begin with.

  19. just here to debunk some of Wanda feats as hers stans still angry.
1://Chthon himself is an absolute weakling within the Marvel cosmology, classical Strange almost killed him with a single spell and he was terrified of Atum, also Thor and Strange also beat In-Betweener he's nothing but a fodder (just like a lot of the abstract entites),and a weakned Strange also beat Wanda possessed by Cthon in Disassembled: https://imgur.com/a/dHnPBxE
2://Wanda didn't kill the phoenix there's no way to kill the it,it's immortal and it's the embodiment of life so if she "killed" it the entire Marvel Metaverse will crumble down and only TOAA can save it,she just banished it with the help of Hope Summers who agreed to let it go;and let's not bring Aaron Jason Avengers into the conversation (where the scarlet witch stated to be able to "kill" the Phoenix) him and Lea Williams their stories aren't taken seriously by fans,,,and Chaos Magic is NOT the yang of PF the whole "Yin and Yang" of CM vs PF came because they had a different gaols one wanted to erase Mutants and the other wanted them back, here's the watcher (an omniscient character) explains what is the actual equal of the PF: https://imgur.com/a/v2o2J88
3://And Wanda is NOT linked to the House of Ideas,do you realize that TOAA (who is a total mystery within the Marvel Metaverse) allowed Vision to summon fire to hurt Nyx so it's not weird that he allowed her spells to be defensive enough to tank The Light of Creation, and the writer himself confirmed in twitter that she's not linked to the house of ideas and it's not canon here : https://imgur.com/a/2ZD3jb7
4://Wanda before absorbing Cthon she combined her soul with the true darkhold, but this is isn't an amp, she's now uses the half of her powers to keep Cthon sealed inside her soul (yeah she's getting the raven treatment) Steve Orlando confirmed in twitter that she's nerfed now (and she herself said kill me and Cthon is free)
4://Billy (who is confirmed to be stronger than his mother) doesn't see the creation as a fiction in that panel he just seeing all the possiblities and probabilities
That's it all.while that i don't agree with DB reasoning for Wanda to lose, most of her feats are debunkable.
