Death Battle Predictions: Shigaraki VS Mahito

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” - Edmund Burke

Tomura Shigaraki, the world’s Symbol of Fear from My Hero Academia.

Mahito, the special grade patchwork man of Jujutsu Kaisen.

The structure of society serves as an inspiration, one which can mold someone’s ideals like clay. But sometimes, that clay does not know how it wants to be shaped, and thus struggles to take form. These struggles can lead to a dangerous questioning of the world, and uncertainty as to what the clay should become. Sometimes, it can turn into a tool of good, set on a course to save the world. But sometimes, all that will come out is darkness. A darkness with only one thing on its mind: death, the destruction of worlds.

For these two, their positions and experiences have led them to have a twisted view of society, resulting in a being that wants nothing but its destruction. But, are they capable enough to destroy each other?

Will history’s most powerful supervillain break Mahito down to dust, or will the curse born of humanity’s hate mold Shigaraki into a corpse? Gotta hand it to us, it is going to be a nightmare to decide which of these two would win a DEATH BATTLE!

Before We Start…

Major MHA and JJK manga spoilers incoming. We will be using all canon material for Shigaraki (the MHA manga, anime, Vigilantes prequel manga, and films) and Mahito (JJK and JJK 0 manga, anime, JJK 0 film and light novels). Guidebooks for both series will also be taken into consideration. The official JJK databook and the Jump GIGA Summer 2021 JJK "Deep Learning Mathematics Lecture" will be the guides used for Jujutsu Kaisen. Ultra Archive and Ultra Analysis guide books will be used for My Hero Academia.

Background

Shigaraki

“You heroes hurt your own families just to help strangers. You heroes pretend to be society's guardians. For generations, you pretended not to see those you couldn't protect and swept their pain under the rug.”

In a world where 80% of the Earth’s population possesses some supernatural ability or Quirk, as they’re called, you shouldn’t be surprised that many would use their powers to become heroes to protect the innocent with smiles on their faces. But as the responsibilities of a hero becomes more clear, the harsh reality makes everyone remember that even heroes aren’t capable of saving everyone. Such was the tragic history of Tenko Shimura.

Though Tenko always wanted to be a hero, he grew up in constant pain due to severe itches from an unknown allergy, and abuse from his hero-hating father, who blamed the profession for his mother abandoning him. One fateful day, during a particularly vicious incident, Tenko developed his own Quirk. Within an instant, he unintentionally murdered his entire family, leaving him as an orphan, wandering the streets in search of help. No matter where he went, however, his pleas were always ignored, until he met a mysterious man named All For One. He sympathized with Tenko, convincing him that society was to blame for his suffering, and taking him under his tutelage to become his successor. It was then that All For One gifted Tenko the disembodied hands of not only his victims, but also his family. Forever after, Tenko Shimura died and was reborn as Tomura Shigaraki.

From this point on, Shigaraki became the leader of the League of Villains, a radicalized group who worked to show the fundamental flaws of hero society and build a new world with nothing but chaos. Unfortunately for Shigaraki, he would be foiled again and again by the next generation of heroes from U.A. High, and most notably a rather interesting student by the name of Izuku Midoriya. Shigaraki and Midoriya were much alike, but while Shigaraki’s love of heroes had twisted into despair and hatred toward society, Deku never lost the optimism he had as a child, even when life kicked him down again and again. Even worse, while Shigaraki had been pulled down his dark path by All For One, Deku had been taken under the wing of All For One’s long-time rival: All Might, the Symbol of Peace that Shigaraki hated more than anything. A fledgling hero and a fledgling villain, alike in so many ways and yet irreconcilably different. And once All Might and All For One took one another down in their final battle, while Deku was entrusted with All Might’s hope for the future, Shigaraki was left to assume his role as the League’s leader on his own, a position he still needed to grow into.

From rival villain groups to corrupt Yakuza gangs to the radical Meta Liberation Army, the League of Villains under Shigaraki’s leadership was nearly crushed more than once, low on resources and struggling to increase their numbers, with promising allies like Dr. Garaki and Gigantomachia reluctant to place their trust in Shigaraki’s leadership. But eventually, he rose to the challenge, crushing the MLA into dust, forcing them to join his cause, and proving himself a worthy leader. It was this that finally allowed him to become the next vessel of All For One, and unleash his wrath against the world. Though an entire army of pro heroes came to stop him, dozens of them turned to ash in an instant, and the strongest among them struggled to stand up to Shigaraki’s incredible new might. Now the successor that All For One envisioned him as for so long, Shigaraki shook society’s trust in heroes to the core, and tore down the society he had hated for so long.

However, the battle heavily damaged Shigaraki’s body, forcing All For One to return and attempt to resume control, while completing Shigaraki’s enhancements. When the world’s heroes formed another plan of attack, the two of them together faced down all in their way with overwhelming force, even bringing an end to some of the world’s greatest saviors. Still, in spite of All For One’s teachings and manipulations, when his old master sought to regain control, Shigaraki rejected him, forcibly declaring that he would seek his own path to destroy everything. Perhaps he never truly believed All For One’s words after all. Despite everything Shigaraki has done, Deku still sees that deep down, Tenko is still crying for help, and believes it may not be too late to save the boy who is still trapped inside. But no matter how Tenko Shimura might feel, as long as Tomura Shigaraki remains determined to stay on the path he is now, whatever hope and peace the world has left will only continue to decay.

Mahito

“Just as you eat when you're hungry, you could kill someone when you hate them”

Cursed Spirits, or better known as just Curses, are beings in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, formed by the negative emotions of humanity. One such Cursed Spirit was formed by the hate and fear that humans have for each other. This Curse was known as Mahito, a special grade Cursed Spirit. After he was born into the world through these negative emotions, trying to figure out who he was, he eventually met another Cursed Spirit known as Kenjaku. Together alongside a group of other special Cursed Spirits, they agreed to seal the strongest Jujutsu Sorcerer in the world, Satoru Gojo.

Continuing on his sadistic journey to find who he is, he met Junpei Yoshino, a high school student at Satozakura High School. Mahito pretended to befriend Junpei, intending to use him in a plot to secure an alliance with the king of Curses, Sukuna. During Mahito’s venture he met the Jujutsu Sorcerer, Kento Nanami. The two fought to the death but Kento ended up getting away before either could kill each other. Later, Mahito manipulated Junpei into attacking his own school. During this attack, Mahito transfigured and killed Junpei in front of Itadori Yuji (Sukuna’s host). This action would forever bind Mahito and Yuji as mortal enemies. Mahito fought Nanami and Yuji, which led to him discovering his Domain Expansion, Self-Embodiment of Perfection. However, his Domain backfired when it touched Sukuna, who in turn severely wounded Mahito. Mahito barely escaped the fight, preparing for the next time he met Yuji.

On October 31st, Mahito and the Curses he was working with coordinated an attack to defeat and capture Gojo. Even though there were casualties (Mahito’s fellow Curse, Hanami), the group was able to seal him away. However this resulted in a group of Jujutsu Sorcerers going to Shibuya in an attempt to rescue him. Amongst this group included Yuji and Nanami. In Shibuya, Mahito met up with his fated enemy, Yuji. During their encounter, Mahito ended up killing Nanami and (maybe, possibly, probably) killing a close friend of Yuji, Nobara Kugisaki, in front of him. This ended up breaking Yuji’s spirit and caused him to go into a depression. However another Jujutsu Sorcerer, Aoi Todo was able to help Yuji defeat Mahito. In his defeat Mahito crawled away to find Kenjaku, who sealed and absorbed Mahito using his Cursed Spirit manipulation. In the end, Mahito was done in by the very humans he looked down on.

Experience & Skill

Shigaraki

Shigaraki Tomura GIF - Shigaraki Tomura Tomura Shigaraki GIFs

Originally, at the beginning of his villainous rampage, Shigaraki could easily be described as inefficient. He was hasty, aggressive, impatient, to the point where some even referred to him as a manchild. After the initial defeat of All For One by All Might at Kamino, however, Shigaraki was left alone to fend for himself along with his remaining League of Villains crew. To survive, he would have to mature, and that he did. Showcased in meetings with villains like Overhaul, his decision-making had clearly improved, as even with the death of a comrade, he still played things smart and agreed to work with Overhaul, eventually benefitting from Overhaul’s battle with the heroes and acquiring his Quirk-Destroying bullets.

His actual combat skill greatly increased soon after as well. He went on to train for days on end with one of All For One’s most trusted underlings, Gigantomachia, growing in physicality and skill greatly as he battled the gigantic brute. His allies and enemies alike took note of this when he went on to battle Re-Destro and his Meta Liberation Army. Shigaraki improved in technique throughout the battle itself, eventually battling Re-Destro and outplaying him. Re-Destro even noted that Shigaraki showed a prowess in combat suited to someone who had trained through life and death situations for a long time.

Shigaraki continued to fight the best of the best, later being able to hold his own against Deku and numerous heroes during the War Arc of the series. At one point, he was able to go hand to hand and do rather well against Deku, Bakugo, Endeavor, and Gran Torino together all at once, while not even being able to use any of his Quirks due to Aizawa disabling them. Shigaraki continued his successes into the final arc of the series, handling a full tag team of heroes and an entire battleground that was specifically built to counter him while removing his Quirk, with relative ease. He also has gained all the knowledge and combat skill of All For One, via merging with his Vestige, who has over a hundred years of combat experience as he has lived for multiple generations.

Overall, while he has not had the best direct teaching, Shigaraki is definitely a more than decent fighter. He has proven to be both agile and sharp in his movements, and disregarding him as a flailing manchild would be any man’s final mistake.

Mahito

Even early on in the series, Mahito showed the skills of a prodigy when it comes to combat. During his first on-screen fight with Nanami, an experienced hunter who had years worth of experience, he was capable of fighting him on an equal ground while he was still a young cursed spirit. He would then go on to train a lonely high school student Junpei in Jujutsu Sorcery and teach him years worth in a small amount of time.

In Mahito's two-on-one battle with Nanami and Yuji, Mahito would also have likely defeated both if it were not for Sukuna's intervention. During this fight, Mahito was able to grow stronger while his life was in danger, allowing him to achieve the ability to conjure his own Domain Expansion. During the Shibuya Incident, Mahito surpassed his prior limits, allowing him to create whole clones of himself that were indistinguishable from the original, while also developing his soul-manipulating abilities.

Mahito has shown comparable martial skill to Yuji and Todo, and is a master at multitasking. He is skilled at mental warfare, using all the abilities at his disposal to break the resolve of any Sorcerer he battles. He is known to fully test all the functions of his abilities, understanding all their limitations and using even those to his advantage. He’s quick to use his own shortcomings in battle to his advantage, like using his clone to drop Nobara’s guard and adapting on the fly to deal with Yuji's ability to hit his soul. Overall, Mahito is a master of combat and one of the deadliest Curses in the world.

Equipment

Shigaraki

Hands

A cosmetic item that covered Shigaraki’s body throughout a good majority of the series. They do not bear any actual combat-related use, rather, they served as a reminder of his past that helped to initially limit his power. Because apparently, All For One got them from Shigaraki’s murdered family. Good parenting… I… I guess.

Quirk Destroying Bullets

Bullets Shigaraki stole from Overhaul, after giving him a rather disturbing hand massage. Shigaraki can shoot these bullets at a target, either with a specialized gun or simply the force of his fingers. Upon injection, they will release a poison that fully destroys someone’s Quirk.

Mahito

Transfigured Human Supply

To make sure he always had transfigured humans to bring into battle (more details later), Mahito carries around condensed finger-sized humans that can be deployed in battle.

Abilities

Shigaraki

Quirks Overview

Supposedly the next stage of evolution of the human race, Quirks are superhuman abilities that were discovered many decades ago. Since then, many people have developed these meta abilities and as of now, 80% of Earth’s population possess a unique Quirk. Despite various theories, it’s unknown how this phenomenon came to be. Eventually, society began to adapt to this change, creating a new age of heroes and villains. Quirks are often the manifestation of a human’s bodily functions, meaning that they can evolve and become stronger through training similar to how a person works out their muscles. There are three main types of Quirks: Emitter, Transformation, and Mutant.

Emitter Quirks are the most common type of Quirk, allowing users to create and control certain things or alter certain things around them in different ways, resulting in a wide variety of properties and abilities. Emitter Quirks usually require at least a conscious effort to activate or a larger amount of concentration. There are some Emitter Quirks that require an outside source to activate. The least common type of Quirk is Transformation Quirks, where the user would temporarily transform their body in a variety of ways, such as enhancing, removing, or adding bodily features.

Though they require a conscious effort to be activated, Transformation Quirks can be trained to be activated upon instinct or reflex. Since Transformation Quirks affect the user exclusively, they require close-range proximity in combat. Finally, there are Mutant Quirks, where people have a permanent abnormality thanks to the abilities they developed. This is the only type of Quirk known to be passed down through generations. Because Mutant Quirks are activated passively and cannot be turned off, people with these types of Quirks are often discriminated against.

Quirk Factors are the collective physical and genetic traits that make up a person’s Quirk, including the primary power and the biological mechanisms allowing that power to function properly. It’s possible for a person’s genetics to gain a second Quirk, but multiple Quirks would put an immense strain on them. All For One (the character) and Izuku Midoriya are two of the few characters with multiple Quirks without any overload while characters like Nine and Tomura Shigaraki require heavy modifications to their bodies and minds to possess multiple Quirks. Quirk Factors can be extracted from a person’s body as well as replicated, enhanced, and created. In addition, through experimentation, Quirk factors can evolve as well as be combined with other Quirk factors into a new artificial Quirk. It’s possible to halt the expression of Quirk factors, rendering Quirks unusable for a while. However, Quirk factors can also be directly damaged, and any damage beyond recovery can result in a Quirk to be permanently suppressed and unusable.

Decay

My Hero Academia Tomura Shigaraki GIF - My Hero Academia Tomura Shigaraki Decay GIFs

The Quirk Shigaraki was born with, Decay is one of the most dangerous Quirks to ever exist. By placing all five of his fingers into contact with an object, Shigaraki can cause said object to decay and eventually be reduced into nothing. First shown when Shigaraki attacked the USJ training facility, it was rather slow and required Shigaraki to get in close to be a threat for his opposition. Eventually however, after being able to recall his past, Shigaraki obtained the full power of Decay, turning it from a potent but limited Quirk, to an actual living apocalypse. This growth allowed Shigaraki to extend Decay across the ground, to the point where it can coat entire cities in destruction at a rapid speed. In terms of speed, the Quirk went from taking a noticeable period of time to basically meaning instant death upon being touched by five of Shigaraki’s fingers.

Decay can transfer to the victim from just being touched by debris affected by the Quirk. Decay is not a shockwave, and cannot be blocked by physical force. Tomura also managed to obtain a much greater degree of control, allowing him to choose specific targets not to hit with his Decay, which he did to spare several of the Nomu. It can also decay away Re-Destro’s stress attacks, which are shockwave based mixed in with manifested stress as black energy.

Post-awakening, Shigaraki is able to decay a target without needing to put all five fingers on them. Such as when he used his two remaining digits to partially damage Re-Destro's giant pointer after the latter destroyed three of Tomura's own fingers on his left hand, albeit the effect was much slower and weaker compared to when Shigaraki uses all five of his digits. He has also shown being able to possibly decay the ground with just his feet.

Fear Aura

Shigaraki’s mere presence has been shown capable of stirring incredible amounts of fear in the people around him. This is additionally notable as it completely canceled out enticement directly caused via a Quirk, rather than just natural commitment held by random citizens. He was also so terrifying that once he appeared in front of Deku and Bakugou, they both felt as if they were decaying to death even though that was not the case. All For One himself caused Izuku and his friends to experience hallucinations of dying just from being in his presence.

Body Modifications

As part of the effort to make Shigaraki the strongest villain ever, Dr. Garaki put Tomura through a living hell, constantly tearing him apart and even putting him in a state of suspended death at times. The result was a body on par with All Might, granting Shigaraki enhanced strength, speed, and durability. His body would be further perfected, reaching the statistics All Might demonstrated in his prime. Should Shigaraki be pushed into a hard fight, he can push his body beyond its limits to increase his movement speed.

Upon his awakening at Jaku Hospital, it was shown his body was incomplete as it would eventually tear itself apart due to the massive amount of Quirks Shigaraki had. As of his body’s completion, this is no longer an issue, as he will evolve to better suit any backlash his Quirks cause.

Evolution and Adaptation

Due to Shigaraki and (the character) All For One’s merge, Shigaraki’s body began to evolve overtime to match All For One’s stock of Quirks. This is living proof of the Quirk Singularity Theory proposed 70 years prior by Dr. Garaki, which states that Quirks gain power with each passing generation, eventually culminating in an uncontrollable force that would ruin the world. This is also related to Shigaraki’s Body Modifications, as his Evolution was ongoing even when Aizawa and Monoma disabled all of his Quirks.

Shigaraki’s adaptation allows him to generate hundreds, possibly thousands, of large arms and fingers from his body in true Tetsuo fashion. These can be used to grab opponents, for swarming attacks, and can even transfer Decay from each hand for a much larger area of effect. These arms can also manifest mouths to hold down opponents or bite their limbs off, or to remove things such as toxins from Shigaraki’s body. However, the arms are slower than Shigaraki himself and not nearly as durable as him. Should they all be destroyed, Shigaraki can simply create a new wave of them on a whim. Tomura can “surf” on these “arm waves” and localize several to either of his actual arms to increase their striking power.

Even more impressive is Shigaraki's healing abilities with this evolution. After receiving a donut hole straight through his chest courtesy of Deku (while his regen Quirk was still being negated by Monoma), Shigaraki generated a new body for himself and shedded off the damaged one, resulting in a massive burst of energy being released.

All For One (The Quirk)

One of the strongest Quirks to ever exist alongside its “brother” One For All, All For One allows Shigaraki to absorb the Quirks of others and take them for himself. The Quirk also allows him to give Quirks he himself has absorbed to other people. This can be helpful if he wants to power up an ally, however it has been shown that having too many Quirks can cause someone’s mind and body to deteriorate at an alarming rate. It is for this reason that the majority of the Nomu are mindless beasts. However, it seems that this issue does not apply for the wielder of the Quirk, meaning Shigaraki can wield multiple alongside Decay. He can even combine certain Quirks for incredibly deadly combinations.

He can combine Decay with this Quirk to immediately kill the victim he drains the quirks of. The Quirk can also resonate with other Quirks that it is connected to (or has connected to before), such as One For All. From this resonance effect, All For One could see the Vestiges of the prior wielders of One For All, and even converse with them (see Vestiges section below).

We would also like to acknowledge that it seems Shigaraki’s true version of All For One has all the Quirks the inferior version All For One (the character) has access to, even having ones All For One gained after giving away the stronger variant of the Quirk. Thus, we will be mentioning Quirks used both by Shigaraki himself and by All For One, even if Tomura has not personally shown off all of the Quirks used by his master.

Air Cannon

Originally possessed by All For One, Shigaraki later received this Quirk, as shown in his fight against Deku. Air Cannon allows him to fire a devastating shockwave of pressurized air from his palms, manifesting in different forms based on how he releases the air with his arms. This ranges from a straight, concentrated air shot to a wide, crescent-shaped air blade. He also has this as a barrier of sorts to defend from attacks.

Air Walk

A Quirk that allows one to literally walk on air. Pretty simple. It can be utilized to either float straight upward, or walk and skip across invisible air platforms while in midair.

Black Lightning

All For One can shoot black lightning bolts from his body. The bolts are strong enough to devastate the surrounding environment and can be fired omnidirectionally.

Detonation

A Quirk that can be placed in someone using the All For One Quirk. Shigaraki can then remotely detonate the Quirk in the victim's body, blowing them up. This was used on Lady Nagant and presumably his flying Nomu.

Explosion

A massive explosion Quirk that All For One (the character) used to kill Nana Shimura. The blast encompassed a small island.

Forced Quirk Activation

A Quirk that allows the user to activate the Quirks of others by force without their consent, even when they are unconscious. This seems to activate on contact, whether it be by direct physical contact or contact through Quirk-made constructs such as the Rivet Stab ability.

Heavy Payload

One of the many Quirks stolen by Shigaraki, Heavy Payload allows him to increase the damage output of all his attacks. In his fight against Star and Stripe, Shigaraki used it to combine Radio Waves and Air Cannon to create a giant beam of electrical energy. He often uses Heavy Payload to boost Air Cannon considerably.

Hardflame Fan

Hardflame Fan allows the user to generate a wall of fire which they can use to cover a part of their body for defense.

Hyper-Regeneration

An incredibly rare ‘artificial’ Quirk created by Dr. Garaki, this Quirk allows Shigaraki high regenerative capability, regrowing whole limbs in seconds. It allowed Shigaraki to survive an explosion from several missiles, healing severe burns and internal damage almost immediately, including damage to the inside of his skull. Hyper-Regeneration has allowed Nomu to regrow their limbs instantly, and even reform their entire body from a severed head. Considering Shigaraki is Dr. Garaki’s ultimate work, he should be able to do the same.

However, it’s not without limits, as powerful and continuous attacks can overwhelm it before it can regenerate Shigaraki. Extensive damage can also slow down the Quirk. However, since the completion of his body, these limits have lessened.

Impact Recoil

Impact Recoil allows the user to reverse the impact caused by an opposing physical force, damaging the opposition instead. It does not work on attacks like bursts of flames.

Hypertrophy

With this Quirk, the user can enlarge their arm at their own whim. Much similar to another arm-enlarging Quirk, Hypertrophy can be used to power up a physical attack from its wielder, and in AFO/Shigaraki’s case, can be combined with other Quirks for more of an effect.

Infrared Ray and Vibration Sensing

This Quirk gives the user infrared senses, to the point where they can sense their entire surroundings. All For One uses it to compensate for his blindness and easily navigate his surroundings. It can be negated by being in proximity to technology such as sensors. AFO can also sense vibrations, to make up for his loss of hearing, which gives him a superhuman awareness of the world around him.

Kinetic Booster

This Quirk increases the amount of kinetic energy All For One creates and releases. All For One has four copies of this Quirk.

Laser

One of the most powerful quirks accessible to AFO and Shigaraki, this fires a powerful laser capable of instantly one-shotting Gigantomachia. It can be fired from underground for a surprise attack, and has so much energy in a single shot that it can instantly destroy Tokoyami’s Abyssal Black Body (which itself is strong enough to defeat All For One in his prime).

Lie Detector Quirk

All For One can sense whether a person is lying or if they possess any semblance of ill will. The Quirk got stronger through the mixing of various other Quirks throughout the years.

Life Force

Life Force allows the user to double their life span, causing them to age at a slower rate, making them look much younger than they really are. This is why Garaki looks as if he's only in his sixties when he’s really at least 120 years old.

Mouth Quirk

This Quirk allows the user to morph the flesh on their hand into a mouth which can be shot out to attack. It is strong enough to severely wound Endeavor. Several can be made at once.

Multiplier

The Quirk seemingly allows the user to grow multiple arms from their body.

Radio Waves

This Quirk allows Shigaraki to disrupt an electromagnetic pulse of lightspeed radio waves capable of disrupting communicators and other electronics, causing them to malfunction. Through an induced current, these radio waves can also be used for communication, such as when All For One used the Quirk to awaken and control the Nomu.

Razor Blade Quirk

All For One can create crescent shaped razor blades and launch them at the opponent.

Reflect

If Shigaraki ever gets hit by an attack, this Quirk will allow him to copy that attack and recreate it at the same strength level. While the Quirk can copy multiple attacks at once, it can only send them out in one direction. However, Shigaraki needs to be hit for this Quirk to activate.

Rivet Stab

Formerly one of All for One’s go-to Quirks, Shigaraki can now wield it for his own. This Quirk allows him to generate and manipulate red and black tendrils from his body, capable of producing lovely sliced up dishes such as Katsuki Bakabob. We’re not sorry.

These tendrils can be fired in an omnidirectional swarm, and can rip off Endeavor’s arm with their piercing power. They also can grab multiple items or targets at once.

Scatter

Scatter is a Quirk that allows Shigaraki to split up and multiply projectiles before firing them, increasing the strength and range of them as long-range attacks. Shigaraki can use this Quirk in conjunction with something like Reflect to fire multiple recreated attacks in different directions.

Search

A Quirk that All For One had previously stolen from a particular cat-themed hero, Shigaraki can use Search to scan an extremely large surrounding area to locate enemies and can see them from a distance as an outline. Search also allows for additional analysis of his foes, helping him determine their strengths and weaknesses.

According to Ragdoll (Volume 9, Chapter 72) and a profile from the Ultra Archive, the Search Quirk allows the owner to know about the person the user is looking at, almost everything, including the weak and strong points and about the location.

Shockwaves

All For One can create a massive shockwave to knock black several targets, or large ones such Dark Shadow in its (His? Her? Their? Does Dark Shadow have a gender-?) Abyssal Black Body form.

Spearlike Bones

Spearlike Bones allows the user to generate cone-shaped spears on their arm made of bone. They can be covered in metal with a Quirk called Rivet.

Springlike Limbs

Springlike Limbs allows the user to store and release force by coiling their muscles, akin to a coil spring. Tomura has used this Quirk to launch himself into the air.

Strength Enhancer

A Quirk that enhances All For One's physical strength. All For One has three versions of this Quirk that can all be stacked on top of one another as well.

Telekinesis

This Quirk gives All For One the ability to levitate objects with his hand. He has used it to lift his medical device and stop an incoming bullet.

Warping

An ability that allows the user to forcefully teleport others. It does have limits however, as the user cannot teleport themselves, and there is a limit on distance. Warping can also be used to move someone in the way to take the attack meant for the user.

Wings

Having stolen it from a Nomu, this Quirk allows Shigaraki a large set of black wings capable of granting him free-form flight. AFO has also manifested wings, which he uses in conjunction with the Black Lightning Quirk.

Quirk Combos

Shigaraki and All For One can mix different Quirks together for devastating effects:

Energy Explosion

All For One mixes Black Lightning with other Quirks, resulting in a massive explosion of energy.

Mouth Blast

All For One combines his Mouth Quirk with several others, resulting in a grotesque cannon. The burst fired from it injured and ripped off Jirou’s ear from just partial exposure.

Ultimate Quirk Combination

By combining numerous Quirks at the same time, the user of (the Quirk) All For One can absurdly increase both their strength and their versatility. In (the character) All For One’s case, he combined multiple Quirks fit for landing as hard a blow as possible in his final fight with All Might.

Vestiges

By far the most bizarre element of My Hero Academia (besides New Order), Vestiges are the consciousness of a person, seemingly ingrained within their Quirks. According to Yoichi, one's "essence", their consciousness, is hardwired into their Quirk Factor in the form of a "shade". As All For One explains to Izuku and Nana, a person's consciousness lingers behind in their Quirk Factor. Quirks are “individuality,” they represent the person in their entirety.  Vestiges resemble humans and have willpower, having a degree of agency. As an example, Deku states that the long-dead OFA predecessors are alive within the Vestige world and the first user knew something with AFO despite being miles away.

While Vestiges are not explicitly said to be souls, they have proven to be in some sense spiritual/mystical, which is best shown in My Hero Vigilantes. During the final arc of the prequel, Koichi is left nearly dead by All For One’s servant, Number 6. During this attack, Koichi is able to see phantoms of his mentor and best friend, Knucklerduster and Pop, despite both being miles away. Both Knuckleduster and Pop were near death at this time, Pop suffering a seizure and Knuckleduster’s heart having stopped. Both phantoms/Vestiges are proven to be actually present, as Knuckleduster (Vestige) is able to banish AFO’s Vestige from the area (which was observing and guiding Number 6). Later, Number 6 is able to hear singing from Pop’s Vestige, right before his death. Both Vestiges disappeared once their actual bodies were saved, by Midnight and Soga. Something of note here is that Knuckleduster/Iwao had no Quirk at this time, yet still had a Vestige.

The spiritual nature of Vestiges are further explored with Rody Soul. Rody’s Quirk creates a small bird-like animal named Pino. Pino is linked to Rody's soul and her actions reflect his inner feelings. The final piece of evidence is provided by Shigaraki and AFO. Both Yoichi and Shigaraki confirm that AFO’s Vestige controlling Shigaraki was taking over his Body and Soul. Later on, AFO is able to see and hear the Vestiges of all the prior OFA users within Izuku, when both AFO and OFA resonate. In turn, Yoichi is able to see AFO through Shigaraki, and wounds Shig receives reflect upon the Vestige of his former master.

All For One has a Vestige within for every Quirk he has collected, which can manifest as shades to attack an intruding Vestige/spiritual force. The Vestige of Star and Stripe (New Order) manifested within Shigaraki/AFO after the Quirk was absorbed, and proceeded to destroy several Quirks within them. The Vestiges with Shigaraki defended him and ultimately brought an end to Star before she could finish the job. It should be noted that the destruction of these Vestiges will cause physical recoil to Shigaraki’s body, as the Quirk factor is also destroyed in the process (which is part of the body).

While it is noted the Vestiges within AFO (the original person)’s copied Quirk are able to turn on him since they have will, this is not possible for Shigaraki’s version. New Order was unable to turn the Vestiges against either AFO or Shig. In the case of the Vestige rebellion within the original’s copied Quirk, AFO was able to consume them and regain control of his body.

Check the support section for more information on All For One's own Vestige.

Mental World

In line with Vestiges, Shigaraki has shown to have his own “mental world”, akin to One For All having its own. He views it for the first time upon his initial death at Jaku Hospital. The mental space is a disorderly place, buildings and large hands present in a destroyed mess straight out of the Akira manga. Here, Tomura was able to view Vestige like phantoms of his deceased family, including Nana Shimura. Despite their effort to keep Shigaraki in the light, Tomura chose All For One and rejected them, crumbling them away.

Later on, Tomura would manifest an inner world of hands while taking the appearance of a child, meant to safeguard him from (the character) All For One’s Vestige. This was able to hide Tomura’s presence from All For One until the final battle against Deku.

Shigaraki’s Willpower/Spiritual Erosion

Due to both All For One’s own manipulations and Shigaraki’s own upbringing, Shigaraki has immense hatred and willpower. Shigaraki’s own willpower literally restarted his heart after he died during the Jaku Hospital raid. More impressively, his will and hatred can override the rules of One For All, and erode its own “world”. This erosion effect extends to affecting Vestiges, as it nearly crumbled AFO, who only survived by restricting Shigaraki. AFO is able to combine his power with Shigaraki’s will to increase the power of this “spiritual” erosion.

Later on, All For One used Tomura’s hatred to expedite their merge, combining their minds and soul into a new being. This new being, ShigAFO (fan term), is covered in the Forms section below. All For One would keep control over the body until his final battle with Izuku Midoriya. Here, it would be revealed that Shigaraki hid his “origin”, or essence, within his soul and was slowly retaking control. Shigaraki briefly possesses his body throughout his battle with the heroes, and completely destroys All For One’s Vestige afterwards.

Resistances

Furthermore, Shigaraki and All For One’s Vestige can destroy other souls that invade their body (Shigaraki eroding All For One, All For One devouring the rebelling Vestiges). Shigaraki’s will allows him to erode the inner world of One For All, which can be further bolstered by All For One. Shigaraki also showed the ability to tear apart Vestiges, doing so to All For One (the character) himself. Lastly, the Vestiges within the All For One Quirk are able to defend their masters (killing the Star and Stripe/New Order Vestige), and fight off invading Vestiges/souls and destroy them. Tomura’s inner world can mask his presence from other Vestiges, including ones in control of his body.

Mahito

Cursed Spirit Physiology

Cursed Spirits, or Curses, are beings composed of Cursed Energy. Curses are created when cursed Energy leaks from humans as a result of their human emotion. Cursed Energy builds up like sediment until a Cursed Spirit takes form. The bodies of Cursed Spirits are completely made of cursed energy.

Cursed Spirits are generally invisible to the human eye and do not appear on video capturing devices and the sounds they produce are also imperceptible to humans. Living humans who have been cursed can only notice peculiar symptoms without recognizing they are being plagued by a Cursed Spirit. Non-Sorcerers whose lives are jeopardized by a Curse may have the ability to see the Curse in that life-or-death circumstance. However, Curses still exist physically in the world and can be touched by humans with zero Cursed Energy. Only Curses with small amounts of Cursed Energy can turn intangible.

Cursed Spirits cannot be harmed by traditional means since their bodies are made of Cursed Energy. Physical attacks can hit them, but no damage is dealt regardless of how powerful the attack is. In Jujutsu, a Curse must be exorcised by utilizing another Curse, in other words Cursed Energy. Exceptions might be abilities that can break down souls, or energy similar to Cursed Energy.

Mahito is a special grade Curse, which are Cursed Spirits with high intelligence that can manipulate their Cursed Energy much more naturally than a Sorcerer. Curses are noted to be born from fears of certain things, such as the smallpox Curse being born from the fear of disease. Mahito explains that Jogo and the other Special Grade Curses are born of fear of natural disasters. Curses being born from fear and being empowered by it is further affirmed in the JJK light novel. Mahito himself is born of humanity's fear of itself.

Body and Soul

The soul and body in Jujutsu Kaisen have a strange interplay with one another. The soul and the physical body are defined as being “illusory boundaries of a person's being that are both fundamentally information”. In essence they exist as one, being fundamental information made flesh. Gege even defines the body as being similar to a Domain. The inside of the body is stated to be "like a Domain", which makes it "impossible" to materialize Cursed Energy inside someone else's body. "You would have to rip it open" to accomplish such a feat.

Mahito believes that the soul is not special but is a mundane and ordinary object. In his view, "the soul should always exist before the body" because he is able to indirectly manipulate the body using his soul manipulation technique, Idle Transfiguration, to change the body. "The shape of the body gets pulled along by the shape of the soul", in his words.

However, Kenjaku states that "the body is the soul, and the soul the body." He concludes this from the reaction of his host Geto's memories, which attempts to choke him to death with his own hand when Gojo demands why he is allowing his body to be used. "This phenomenon, or the fact that the host body's memories are retained, can't be explained" otherwise, as Kenjaku says. Kenjaku and Mahito both use different techniques that interact in some way with the soul and body, and Mahito suggests that the two "practically live in different worlds," meaning that the soul-body basics might not be the same for everyone. This exchange is inconclusive, however, as Kenjaku merely says, "I like that. It's poetic".

There are some examples suggesting the soul and body are indeed one, as Kenjaku suggests. Principal Yaga utilizes his knowledge to create his Cursed Spirit dolls and birth the existence of Panda by copying soul information. Ogami's technique utilizes Cursed Energy to summon the information of Toji's body while keeping the information comprising his soul separate. Toji was still able to overcome the process and dominate the possessor's soul with only his "body information" which also allowed him to retain his innate feelings and kill himself when fighting his son.

Cursed Energy

Cursed Energy is born from negative emotions like anger or sadness. As those are common feelings, almost all humans have it lingering inside their body. Humans above a certain level are able to see Cursed Energy and beings composed of it. Controlling one's emotions is essential for channeling Cursed Energy, and every Jujutsu Sorcerer has been taught how to do so. All Curses have this energy, as they are made from it.

Cursed Energy flows from the gut, and to the rest of the body. It can be used to reinforce the body, increasing strength, speed, and durability. The usage of Cursed Energy in combat is called Taijutsu. Experienced Sorcerers such as Nanami can subconsciously protect their soul from Mahito's spiritual and biological attacks with their flow of Cursed Energy (though it is noted it cannot defend from repeated attacks on the soul). This should apply to advanced Curses as well, like special grades. Skilled enough Sorcerers and Curses can restrict damage by controlling their energy, as shown by Todo focusing his energy in a singular spot to minimize harm from an attack. Mahito can manipulate his Cursed Energy at will, and has a large supply of it considering he is a special grade Curse.

Injuries caused by Cursed Energy cause people to become automatically cursed, which creates severe consequences for normal beings, such as extreme pain, weakening of the body, becoming ill, and eventually death. Cursed Energy also grants the ability to harm non-physical entities, like low-grade Curses, which are capable of becoming intangible.

Binding Vows

Bindings are the pledges and restrictions that you make with yourself and others. The punishment for breaking one is severe (possibly even death) and this is an important factor in Jujutsu Sorcery. Binding Vows are created through Cursed Energy that an individual can make with oneself or another person. They are self-imposed restrictions by which a person can sacrifice one thing in order to gain something else, similar to the law of equivalent exchange. In addition, disclosing a technique and restraining oneself are also a binding and bring about effects such as increasing Cursed Energy.

One such example is called “Showing One's Cards”. Many Jujutsu Sorcerers and Curses will inform the enemy of their techniques before use in battle. While this seems counterintuitive at a glance, it can not only allow them to create a set of rules to restrict the enemy, they can also trick them by hiding certain aspects of their techniques or different applications to mislead their opponents. It can also strengthen the ability of the person’s techniques.

Jujutsu/Curse Technique

(Source of Image)

Jujutsu is the application of Cursed Energy into specific techniques. If Cursed Energy is the equivalent of electricity, Cursed Techniques are the household appliances that run on it. Cursed Techniques channel Cursed Energy into them to perform a specific function, bestowing a special power on the user. Cursed Techniques are something like a blueprint, a mold, or a formula. The caster pours Cursed Energy into that mold, or builds the technique using the blueprint.

Idle Transfiguration

This Cursed Technique allows Mahito to reshape the souls of himself or someone he physically touches. He can transfigure someone's body into a deformed state, or just outright kill them. Mahito does not heal himself with Reverse Cursed Technique; he instead reinforces the shape of his soul to undo any injuries. A person, once disfigured by Idle Transfiguration, cannot be restored by Reverse Cursed Technique healing

Idle Transfiguration allows Mahito to pull an Alex Mercer and reshape his body into various different shapes, weapons, and even split off his body into different pieces. He can turn into different forms like a “slug”, and break apart in order to fake his death. He can turn his torso into a barbed wire net and grow a second head and pair of arms on his back. He has turned his arm into a drill, changed into a child-like form to avoid attacks, and grown wings to fly. Mahito can also increase his movement speed via making his legs deer-like, and can turn into a fish to swim deeply into water.

This ability also offers several counters to surprise attacks. Mahito can transform one arm into a blade and create an eye on the opposite hand to help him fight with his back turned or just grow multiple eyes. He can also form a giant hollow copy of himself while making his real body small enough to slip through a drain cover. More dangerous than any of this is what he can do to other people:

Soul Touch

Mahito can reshape humans into whatever he wants with Idle Transfiguration. By touching a person he shapes their soul, which in turn reshapes the body to his desire. Mahito controls transfigured people and gives them Cursed Energy by modifying their brains. “Soul Touch” is a direct attack on the victim’s soul and can have a delayed effect on the subject, should Mahito choose. Mahito has employed this for psychological warfare in combat, tricking his opponents into believing his victims could be saved, only to pop them in their would be savior’s face (or just blind them with blind). Soul Touch can kill people by deforming their head, bursting them, and even the slightest touch can burn the victim. This ability can also be used to heal others, like when Mahito healed Kokichi Muta (who was born with only part of his right arm, paraplegia, and extremely sensitive skin).

More useful than just killing people, however, is making an army of minions. Mahito can make a swarm of Transfigured Humans (see Support section) and reshape them at will. He can reshape people into swords, curved spikes, flesh walls, and snake like constructs for him to ride on. Mahito can also hide in affected people for surprise attacks or use multiple people at once for combo attacks. Mahito experimented with the size he could reshape souls to, and from this was born more complex techniques like Soul Multiplicity and Body Repel, detailed below.

Mahito cannot transfigure souls selectively and when he tries to use it on someone, he has to touch all of the souls within. Cursed Energy can protect a Sorcerer’s soul from his touch, though it still injures them, but only if they acknowledge their soul, and even then this method can only protect the person a few times in sequence.

Regeneration

Cursed Spirits can heal themselves (even regenerating lost limbs). Because they are made out of cursed energy, they can heal themselves without using Reverse Cursed Technique. Curses use this to heal their wounds, such as Jogo healing from decapitation (albeit overtime). Mahito, however, is the ultimate exception to this rule.

Mahito does not heal himself with typical Curse healing or Reverse Cursed Technique; he instead reinforces the shape of his soul to undo any injuries. Mahito uses his soul to reshape his body to any form he wants, even if his body was reduced to chunks (because the body will take the shape of the soul, and Mahito is in control of what form his soul takes). He can even heal from self detonation, which he did to survive a weapon which could hurt his soul. Speaking of, the main way to bypass Mahito’s healing is to directly attack his soul, since that is the origin of his healing abilities. Mahito has shown the ability to take several blows from Yuji (who can attack his soul directly via his unique existence as Sukuna’s host), including more than one Black Flash before his body reached its limit.

Despite this impressive regeneration, Mahito does have an implied limit. Mahito actually states that there is a limit to how big/small he can mutate human bodies by changing the shape of their soul (he was experimenting to learn this). There is also some degree of evidence Mahito is wrong in his assertion that he won't die as long as his soul is intact, as the body and soul are not as separate as he believes. Kenjaku argues they are one and the same, and there is Todo’s explanation of people existing as body, mind, and soul all at once. Regardless, the destruction of Mahito’s soul would permanently kill him.

Soul Multiplicity

As stated in the panel, Mahito can combine two or more souls with his Idle Transfiguration. This also allows him to use more techniques that occur because of the souls naturally rejecting each other.

Body Repel

Because of Soul Multiplicity, the rejecting souls increase the energy which Mahito can use to generate an output of transfigured humans into a single attack.

Cloning

Mahito can clone himself and make a double that is on par with the original. While the clone can change forms like the original, he cannot, however, manipulate transfigured humans or other souls. The clone can still regenerate, and can be used for a fake out attack, like when the real Mahito and his clone swapped to defeat Nobara.

Polymorphic Soul Isomer

By merging two or more souls with a weak rejection, Mahito can create a much stronger transfigured human to fight for him. The explosive creation results in them having enhanced strength, but weak durability.

Curtain

Curtains are a vast, spherical shield that prevent civilians from seeing the activity of Cursed Spirits and sorcerers within a specified space. Curtains are formed using a hand sign accompanied by an incantation: "Emerge from the darkness, blacker than darkness. Purify that which is impure." Radio waves may be blocked as a side effect.

The caster can also sense when the curtain is damaged. By imposing conditions, the curtain can also include additional effects. For example, specific individuals can be chosen as a target that cannot enter a curtain, such as "anyone can enter the Barrier at the cost of Gojo Satoru being barred entry". This usually can only be applied to beings with Cursed Energy, and the stronger the resistance inside the curtain, the weaker the resistance is to outside intrusion. This also usually required preparation time with a talisman.

Black Flash

An attack in which a user’s physical strike is greatly enhanced when Cursed Energy is applied to it within one-millionth of a second that creates a spatial distortion (manga statement). This technique requires extreme focus, and no Jujutsu Sorcerer is capable of using it at will. Mahito has performed this move twice, after reaching the right emotional state after breaking Yuji’s will.

Using Black Flash consecutively isn't amazing. Using it more than twice, it would be difficult to do consecutively or on the same day. And it doesn't matter if the first time was done out of pure luck or skill. When successfully using Black Flash, Jujutsu Sorcerers are in a zone similar to what athletes experience. The typical thought process of manipulating cursed energy becomes like breathing. This leads to a greatly increased performance in combat, allowing the user to operate at 120% of their maximum potential.

Innate Domain

The "Innate Domain" is the space that humans and Curses are born with, which can be called a "mental landscape" that embodies our heart/mind. This includes not only Sorcerers, but also non-Sorcerers. Domain Expansion is an Innate Domain imbued with a Cursed Technique, it is the act of embodying with Cursed Energy.

Innate Domains are just as spiritual as they are mental, as Sukuna was able to cross over and speak to Jogo’s spirit as he passed on. Likewise, after dying due to Sukuna's actions (who ripped his heart out of his body while in control), Yuji was able to enter Sukuna's Innate Domain. The two of them were able to converse and fight while Yuji's body was still dead. Sukuna was even able to use the Reverse Cursed Technique on Yuji while in his Innate Domain to regenerate his heart and revive him.

Mahito’s Innate Domain appears as a large black environment that presents with giant hands clasped together to form a flower-like shape. Connected to these hands are multiple arms that grab one another to form a net pattern.

Domain Expansion: Self-Embodiment of Perfection

Application

The ultimate technique of any Jujutsu Sorcerer/Curse is the Domain Expansion, releasing cursed energy to create a barrier and separate dimension that will ensure any attack they land cannot be avoided. The user manifests his Innate Domain using Cursed Energy and imbues it with a sure-hit sure-kill. Domains can empower the user’s technique to at least 120%. The edge of a barrier can be shifted to remove an opponent, and as mentioned prior attacks in Domains will always hit the target. Domains also enhance the power of the techniques of the user, and nullify the Cursed Techniques of those dragged into the domain, at least initially. Domains can be countered via activating another Domain, or by techniques that nullify, such as Simple Domain

Escaping a Domain surrounded by a barrier is almost impossible, since the cubic volume inside is different from the cubic volume outside, making it extremely difficult to find the boundaries of the Domain while inside, especially while trying to survive the sure-hit sure-kill technique. However, the more the barrier is reinforced from the inside, the more vulnerable it is to penetration from the outside. Despite this, Yuji had trouble punching through the outside of Mahito's Domain, showing it was reinforced to an extent.

Domain usage costs a massive amount of the user’s Cursed Energy pool and can leave their ability unstable for a while. In Mahito’s case, it would take nearly 10 days to replenish his energy. This restricts him to a single usage of the ability per fight.

Technique

Mahito's Domain Expansion creates an environment where he is automatically connected with the souls of anyone inside and is capable of transfiguring them at will. The Domain space is large enough to encompass even a large mech. This ability has backfired on Mahito though. Yuji entering Mahito’s domain exposed the latter to Sukuna, who damaged his soul as retaliation. Mahito lacks the skill to target individual souls with his Domain.

In order to overcome this setback, Mahito learned to use a 0.2 second variation of the Domain, after being exposed to Gojo’s own usage of this variation. The duration is short enough that Sukuna cannot kill him for intruding on his soul, and it is still enough to cause Todo's hand to transfigure, forcing him to remove it. Using even this short version costs plenty of energy and can weaken Mahito.

Resistances

  • Foreign Intrusions: Due to the body being like a living Domain, foreign intrusions cannot manifest in the body. They must enter the body via piercing the skin or be breathed inside, like toxins.

  • Limited Resistance to Soul Damage: Can endure a degree of attacks to his own soul, though enough will kill him.

  • Resistance/Possible Invulnerability to Physical Damage: Curses generally are unharmed by physical attacks that are not laced with Cursed Energy.

Forms

Shigaraki

ShigAFO

When Tomura inherited All For One (the Quirk), the Vestige of All For One (the character) joined with it. And since both Tomura's will and All For One's will clash with each other, this gave birth to a completely new form where both men's consciousness gave birth to a whole new personality with an identity crisis, unsure whether he is All For One or Tomura Shigaraki or even Tenko Shimura. All For One sums it up as a completely new entity with Shigaraki's hatred as a fuel.

While Tomura is still seen fighting against the control, by the Final War, both minds almost became one with a combination of Tomura's wish of absolute destruction and All For One's will of complete control. But Shigaraki still fought against it and eventually kicked AFO (the character) out, wanting to be his own man.

Evolution: Optimal Defense

Through Evolution, Shigaraki is capable of passively growing stronger as the fight goes on. Evolution also causes his body to adapt to any given circumstance, like how he adapted into a more defensive form when under constant attack by Mirko and the UA forces. It is likely he can also adapt into more offensive or agile forms as well if the situation calls for it. Shigaraki's defensive form covers his “hand” armor, with his left arm covered in growths resembling his deceased family. This provides enhanced defense and superior striking force, with ShigAFO noting he could crack Deku’s spine with a well-placed blow if it landed.

Mahito

Instant Spirit Body of Distorted Killing

After using Black Flash on Yuji and Todo, Mahito was able to find "The True Essence" of his soul. Using his Domain Expansion for 0.2 seconds and then simultaneously using Idle Transfiguration in a two-step process, he awakened a new state of existence. His "True, Unbridled Soul ''  is no joke, capable of easily overpowering Yuji in a brawl. As confirmed in the manga, this form is a 200% increase in power, to the point Mahito can create shockwaves capable of breaking the ground apart with just a wave of his arm. He also gains an increase to his durability being noted to be more durable than Choso’s blood hardening, a set of blades, and can still use Idle Transfiguration. He also gains a tail that can be used to black attacks. A tactic he tends to use in this form is to partially undo it on a side of his body, luring his opponent into a false sense of security to get in close to attack.

Mahito still retains all damage dealt to him prior to its activation and can be knocked out of the form with a sufficiently strong enough attack, so long as it also hits his soul.

Support

Shigaraki

Nomus (Near High Ends)

The Nomus are deceased individuals reanimated for the sole purpose of being mindless super soldiers for Shigaraki’s League of Villains and Paranormal Liberation Front. Each Nomu had their bodies heavily modified and altered to be equipped with multiple quirks at their disposal, granted to them by All For One. During experimentation, these individuals had their higher brain function cut off, leaving them with no free will and making it easier for them to follow orders from a superior. There are different grades of Nomus categorized based on their physical enhancements and the amount of quirks they possess.

For this fight, we’ll be looking at Near High-End Nomus. Near High-End Nomus are the second highest grade of Nomus, being the incomplete forms of top-grade Nomus. They have phenomenal strength that makes them physically superior to Upper-Tier Nomus and even puts them at the same level as High-End Nomus, not only in strength but also speed. However, Near High-End Nomus lack the level of intelligence that High-End Nomus possess and therefore can’t think for themselves. Seven of these survived the initial war arc and came under Shigaraki/AFO’s service. He can give them orders vocally or with Radio Waves, and summon them to his location with the Warping Quirk. The Nomus can even be given the order to detonate, likely done with the Quirk used on Lady Nagant.

Below are the Quirks that the Near High-End Nomus have been shown to possess. Six of the Nomus also have Hyper Regeneration, with only one missing the Quirk.

Burst

Burst is a Quirk that allows the user to explode, resulting in an explosion of bright light. However, because the user is literally exploding, this Quirk is obviously a one-time use.

Wing

Wing is a Quirk that allows the user to gain a large set of black wings capable of granting them free-form flight, able to reach blistering levels of speed when flying. One of the Near High-End Nomus had this Quirk, before it was taken by Shigaraki during his battle with Star and Stripe.

Spikes

One of the seven has a spike quirk that it uses for combat.

Drone

A Nomu that uses drones for battle and shoots lasers from them.

All For One (Vestige)

Apparently, when Shigaraki had All For One (The Quirk) transferred to him, the original Vestige of All For One (the character) followed into his mind. Acting far more directly than any other Quirk connected Vestige has in the series.

This Vestige of All For One is capable of influencing Shigaraki’s decisions, and even taking over his body if Shigaraki were to lose consciousness. Though it is clear Tomura does not appreciate his existence, which eventually resulted in him severing himself from All For One’s commanding Vestige. However, considering the Quirk came packed with the old bastard, Shigaraki will have access to his support regardless. All For One’s Vestige does have some uses as well, as it is capable of consuming rebellious Vestiges, and can combine its power with Shigaraki’s “erosion’ effect for mental battle, as seen when used on the inner world of One For All.

Mahito

Transfigured Humans

By manipulating someone’s soul, Mahito can alter a regular person’s body and turn them into a Transfigured Human. These monsters will follow Mahito’s command, and he typically likes taking a good amount of them into battle. Whether it be initially by his side, or by expanding smaller ones he keeps in his pocket (mentioned previously in the equipment). These Transfigured Humans are not too versatile, but are deadly nonetheless. They wield strength far greater than any regular human and consistently prove to be a large nuisance to whoever Mahito fights. They can also vary in size, and are strong enough to tear apart low grade sorcerers. Mahito has had up to 1000 of these, during the fight with Gojo in Shibuya.

Shigaraki

Andy Day on Twitter: "Shigaraki from MHA confirmed that he plays league of legends If that's not proof that League will turn you into a super villain idk what is https://t.co/LMvIgjFnPQ" /

(See, the actual joke is that he’s lonely and has no friends, not LoL. We don’t discriminate.)

Despite his gained maturity and absurd power, Shigaraki is still not unbeatable. Even with the increase in power bestowed on him by All For One. If anything, that power is actually his biggest detriment due to All For One’s Vestige following. While the Vestige can be useful, it is also problematic for Tomura, as his hatred for his lack of freedom can cause problematic mistakes. Shigaraki also has a rather aggressive and chaotic fighting style, meaning a fast and smart enough opponent could exploit that and get some hits in.

In regard to weaknesses relating to his Quirks, initially Decay did not work on things Tomura could not grab, such as sand. Though after his evolutions, Decay seems to be able to decay dirt and sand just fine. In order for All For One (Quirk) to steal another Quirk, the user must make physical contact with the target, not the unleashed Quirk. For example, they cannot steal a flame-based Quirk by touching the flames released from a person. Regeneration done via Evolution seems to leave Shigaraki’s body less durable, at least temporarily. There is also the obvious issue that, with so many Quirks at his disposal, Shigaraki is not going to be able to use all of them at once. All For One (character) himself has even forgotten some of the minor specifics of some of the Quirks he has stolen. The destruction of his Vestiges can also detonate his Quirks, causing internal damage to Shigaraki (as shown by Star and Stripe).

Mahito

Mahito Jujutsu Kaisen GIF - Mahito Jujutsu Kaisen Kento Nanami GIFs

Mahito is a bit overconfident in his abilities, allowing himself to take any attack due to his regenerative capabilities. While he does pratice caution against opponents that can harm his soul (like Yuji), he can get caught up in his own efforts to torture and break his target. This led to his near defeat in his fight with Yuji and Nanami, and ultimately resulted in his complete loss to Yuji in their final battle.

As a Curse, Mahito is also weak to Reverse Curse Technique, which can destroy Curses. Mahito has no way to heal his soul if it is attacked, and it is likely his body regeneration has a limit. He can only use his Domain Expansion once in a fight, and using it destabilizes his abilities for a brief moment. Also, while Mahito can survive at least a few hits to his soul, damage to it can severely weaken him (as shown by Nobara) and sufficient damage will kill him.

Before the Verdict

Why are the MHA movies considered canon?

There have been statements made by Hoshikori that the movies are canon to the story of My Hero Academia, and on top of that, several tie-in chapters to the manga have been released. Also, there have been brief mentions of movie events in the manga as well. Chapter 384 flat confirms all the movies are canon, as every character from the films is shown watching the final battle between Shigaraki and Izuku.

JJK Speed

To keep things simple, the proposed narrative cap of Mach 3 Naoya is not consistent with the series itself. Several characters react to Piercing Blood (which is faster than sound per proper translations). Kenjaku is fast enough to repeatedly dodge multiple of these through a single point after it was fired, even when it was centimeters from hitting him. Yuji is able to react to them, as are other characters. Maki early in the series grabs a bullet at close range, which is faster than Mach 3 given the distance.

More impressively, some characters are capable of performing Black Flash, which involves applying Cursed Energy within a microsecond of striking your opponent. No Jujutsu Sorcerer can do so at will, but many of them are capable of activating their ability within this time-frame (Todo can use his teleportation while Yuji is using Black Flash). In the time of their final clash, Mahito has time to perform Idle Transfiguration and turn back to attack what he thought was Todo interfering all while Yuji is moving with a Black Flash (all of chapter 132).

On the topic of characters being unable to do it “at will,” Nanami says that even performing Black Flash multiple times in a row "isn't amazing". Nanami and Itadori can do so four/five times in a row, so it definitely can't just be attributed to luck or anything like that. It's kind of like how people IRL can be slightly faster or slower depending on the situation, or sometimes perform better at physical tasks based on things like mindset and physical condition and such.

However, activating Black Flash is notably only possible with a certain mindset in which the individual is "in the zone" so to speak, and not reacting consciously (hence the statement of them being unable to do it at will). This actually has basis in how human reaction time and such works in real life.

https://www.scifun.ed.ac.uk/pages/exhibits/ex-reaction-timer.html

“The fastest possible conscious human reactions are around 0.15 s, but most are around 0.2 s. Unconscious, or reflex, actions are much faster, around 0.08 s because the signal doesn't have to go via the brain. Reflex actions occur in response to danger, for example moving your hand away from something hot or blinking when something moves quickly towards your eyes.”

Reflexive reaction occurs more quickly than conscious reaction because you don't need time to process thoughts or signals before doing it. This is in line with the description in the series, and would explain why they can't throw around Black Flashes whenever they want. It should be reasonable to use the ratio between reflexive reaction and conscious reaction (which is about 3x), to gauge their normal reactions in relation to their reflexive activation. It really wouldn't make sense to argue that their reactions would vary enough for Black Flash to be consistently possible without them being somewhere in its ballpark

It's kind of similar to the ratio between perception and reaction time. This comes to around mach 284, calc linked in Mahito’s speed section.

Later on Yuji uses Black Flash so consistently that it's essentially as though he can do it at will (he gives the impression he can), which would support the notion of BF users' reactions being at least somewhat relative to the activation time.

Mahito scaling to Jogo

This one is pretty simple. It is stated five Black Flashes would kill Jogo. Jogo is implied to be able to use a Domain even after using his Maximum Meteor, despite the energy drain. As such a “peak” Jogo should be able to scale to his maximum in durability, as Curses and Sorcerers increase their durability to its peak levels with said energy. Since Mahito could handle four Black Flashes, he downscales from the Maximum Meteor value. Jogo also implies Mahito will become stronger than him, this being before Mahito evolves in his final battle with Yuji.

Maximum Meteor

While there are calcs scaling Maximum Meteor to city level from its shown impact, most of these calcs use an inconsistent shot of the meteor, resulting in inflated sizes that don't make any sense. In particular, it would make a building right next to it as large as the Empire State Building. We have chosen to use more consistent visuals for the meteor for the lower-end value for it. Likewise, using ablation speed for the meteor does not line up, as all of Jogo's attacks are on fire and Sukuna had enough time to keep people standing still on a countdown before it hits the ground

Shigaraki was nearly killed by minor exposure to the missile explosion. Why is he being scaled to the missiles then?

Shigaraki does indeed acknowledge full exposure might be fatal, which is why he uses surface area to his advantage to survive the blast. However, his Nomu survives exposure, its body remaining sufficiently intact for Shigaraki to order it to detonate. The Nomu in question was a “Near High-End” and thus inferior to High-Ends that have been beaten by characters like Endeavor and Mirko.

As for actual damage done to Shigaraki, this is most likely due to heat. Shigaraki and the High-Ends are more susceptible to heat damage than blunt force damage. Shig was being exposed to a high-end heat laser moments prior to the detonation and it was continuously beating out his regeneration since he couldn't fully regenerate his face. The chapter establishes that too much damage at one time can affect his durability for a while and previously he's shown a weakness to high temperatures. He does improve in heat resistance overtime (which is noted in resistances), but not enough to save him from said missiles.

Regarding examples below, both Shigaraki and AFO are depicted as being physically superior to Endeavor, with Shigaraki humiliating him in bout of strength and AFO tearing off Endeavor’s arm.

  • Hosu Nomu - Endeavor had to basically carbonize its brain cells with fire to counter its regen.

  • Hood - Pierced and damaged by most of Endeavor's FlashFire attacks, especially Hell Spider and Prominence Burn.

  • Woman - Had her brain fried by Endeavor's fire.

  • Shigaraki - Had his skin taken off by the Hell Curtain move. Scorched by Prominence Burn even after dodging it (though he still got tagged). Burned a bit by Vanishing Fist and basically turned to charcoal by full contact Prominence Burn.

  • AFOaraki - Had his stomach damaged by a laser. Also had his body and face burned by the laser spear. Took partial damage from the heat of these bombs even after using a decoy.

  • Winged High-End Nomu - Same as Shigaraki. Both were hit by the vacuum attack. Both were punched around by Star. But in the end it was heat that did the most damage.

  • AFO - Charred to nearly nothing by Endeavor, only surviving due to Eri’s quirk.

While a lot of these biologically-modified characters have high resistance to blunt force, their resistance to heat is not at the same level. It's obviously still high but not as high as their blunt force durability.

As for consistency, Shigaraki tanks a punch from Star’s Air Susanoo calced at 4 gigatons. All Might and Deku have also performed feats on a similar level of power, such as the storm punch in the second film.

There’s also a statement recently in the My Hero manga as well that states that humanity lacks the means to currently kill Shigaraki. This would account for the United States’ missile supply, meaning at peak power Shigaraki could more reliably survive the missiles.

Can Shigaraki interact with Mahito?

A rather tricky question. We are told humans with exactly zero cursed energy in JJK can see Curses (Toji, Post-Shibuya Maki), but this can also be attributed to the unique situation that permitted this (Heavenly Restriction). We do know that humans put in situations of near death can see Curses, and even people like Junpei, who was not born to be a Sorcerer can see them. Curses exist physically and can be touched by people, and while they dont show up on video, the Quirk called Search should be able to see them as an outline. Search can see outlines of people even if they are obscured from view, and view dozens of people at once. Mahito’s transfigured humans can be seen by anyone, they do not share his “invisibility”.

The main method Shigaraki can view and talk to Mahito is the All For One Quirk. It has a resonance feature that allows the user to view and speak to Vestiges as if they were physically present that activates through an established link. Due to the link AFO has with OFA, ShigAFO gained the ability to view, hear, and speak to the Vestiges that inhabit One For All. Should Mahito touch Shigaraki with Idle Transfiguration, he risks creating such a link and thus creating a method for both to speak and view each other.

As for Shigaraki harming Mahito, view the Verdict below.

Are Vestiges souls?

To keep things simple, the narrative in My Hero initially dictated Vestiges were more so a consciousness left via a Quirk Factor. This is still true to this day, but Vestiges were made more “spiritual” overtime. Vigilantes directly shows them acting as spirits, and OFA’s Vestiges have shown properties that line up with what is shown in the Vigilantes manga. In ironic fashion, MHA and JJK share the following, in that their spiritual component is implied to be tied to the body (Vestiges and Quirk factors, souls and the body), yet both series also have refutations to both (Knuckleduster having a Vestige despite not having a quirk, Mahito claiming the soul comes before the body). Under Verse Equalization, both are considered similar enough for cross interaction.

Verdict

Stats

Starting with power, Mahito is generally considered to be a rather powerful character in Jujutsu Kaisen, being able to contend with characters like Todo, Nanami, and the series’ protagonist, Yuji. He can casually smash through walls, subways, buildings, and so on. Skipping to his best scaling however, we have Hanami being able to spread and grow a multitude of trees (who Mahito is comparable to). Considering the energy needed to make trees grow and just how much the spread, this feat would get about 3 kilotons of TNT. This feat happens more earlier in the series, and thus Mahito is able to upscale it a notable bit.

This upscaling is further extended by his special form, Instant Spirit Body of Distorted Killing. Try saying that ten times fast. This form is also stated in an official Jump scan to offer a 200% increase to Mahito’s raw power, meaning his attack potency can reach 9 kilotons. Mahito’s scaling can go even further though. With the Instant Spirit Body of Distorted Killing form, Mahito should be able to scale to Jogo, who can create a meteor strong enough to turn Shibuya to ash, a feat that gets from 155 to 832 kilotons of TNT (via surviving several Black Flashes, as five is stated to be able to kill Jogo).

But in actuality, it does not really matter whether or not Mahito’s attack potency is worth 3 kilotons or 800 kilotons. Shigaraki has him beat by a mile in the power department regardless. To put the severity of the gap into context, an early series Todoroki, a character Tomura should be absurdly superior to in My Hero Academia’s final story arc, was able to make a giant stadium eclipsing ice wall. The energy needed to create this wall would be at worst over 10 megatons of TNT. That is just a bit under 13 times stronger than Mahito’s full power, using both the Jogo scaling arguments. This feat alone would get Shigaraki the edge, even if you used the 200% increase from Mahito’s form that I am not going to let twist my tongue again on top of Jogo’s feat, as that would only get that feat to 2.5 megatons of TNT.

But the gap is obviously way bigger than that. Jumping straight to Shigaraki’s best stuff, we have Deku and a One For All amped Bakugo being able to spin around Nine’s cloud formation. A feat that gets an energy value worth a whopping 5.72 teratons of TNT. Shigaraki should logically be able to scale to the full output of the feat and not just Deku and Bakugo’s individual contributions, considering Nine was able to fight off Deku and Bakugo together for a time while wielding an inferior version of All For One (the Quirk), Deku would proceed to get stronger in later arcs and yet Shigaraki could still handle him. Shigaraki later would have further evolutions to his strength, etc. etc. Essentially, Shigaraki should be approximately over 2 million times stronger than Mahito’s theoretical max, putting the 200% increase over the Jogo meteor scaling. So it is safe to say Shigaraki is taking power here.

Speed is also in Shigaraki’s favor as well. Jujutsu Kaisen has a good handful of low mach speed feats, such as bullet dodging and sound surpassing attacks. As for Mahito, his most impressive scaling comes from the fact he is able to consistently perform the Black Flash technique. The move requires applying a powerful burst of Cursed Energy within microseconds to deal severe damage. To further support characters scaling to Black Flash’s required timeframe, some top-tier sorcerers are shown to be capable of even activating abilities within this timeframe. Safe to say, Mahito should be able to scale to the technique, and net a speed stat of Mach 284. It is worth noting that his tongue-twisting name of a form does not offer the same 200% increase to speed that it does power, so do not try to have any funny thoughts regarding that possibility.

Unfortunately for him, it pales in comparison to Shigaraki’s own reactions. My Hero Academia has its own bullet dodging and sound surpassing speed feats to bring up, but the best scaling is where Mahito is put in a pickle. Shigaraki before perfecting All For One (the Quirk) was able to blitz the American hero Star and Stripe, who previously in their fight was able to catch a redirected laser. The lasers involved in this fight moved straight, burned on contact, did not have force, etc. etc., they meet the traditional laser standards. Considering the distance between Shigaraki and the hero, and how fast she would have to move to catch the laser, this would mean Stars would have a reaction speed of 2% the speed of light. This is consistent with Lady Nagant being able to shoot a sniper bullet across Japan later in the manga, a feat that can also get into low sub-relativistic percentages. Just the 2% feat alone however would make Shigaraki over sixty times faster, with more upscaling to boot as well.

Shigaraki could also be argued to be even faster than this. In the movie My Hero Academia: World Mission, a 20% One For All Deku is capable of dodging what seems to be lasers from the villain Flect Turn, meaning a Deku that is significantly slower than Shigaraki could potentially be from 9 to 35% the speed of light. Details for these “lasers” go both ways however. Flect’s attack is shown picking up dust upon hitting the ground, implying force, and the attack does not seem to burn Deku. It pierces him, actually. At the same time though, Flect’s mirrors and Quirk are described to specifically be able to reflect light. Making it a rather odd speed argument to discuss. Luckily, Shigaraki is still blitzing Mahito anyways, so it is not actually important in the grand scheme of things.

To summarize, Shigaraki is much stronger and faster than anything Mahito knows or has dealt with. Even if you were to be generous with Mahito’s scaling and throw the 200% increase around, Shigaraki is still massively stronger. The speed edge, while not quite as big as the power one, is still incredibly comfortable for Shigaraki, giving him a clear edge in the stat trinity.

Arsenal & Abilities

Abilities, a trait both have in spades. To start off, as discussed in the Q/A the most important detail to discuss is how Shigaraki interacts with Mahito. Mahito would start the fight off invisible to Shigaraki, but his transfigured humans would not. Transfigured humans can be seen by regular people, and can be touched by them as well. The AoE of Decay takes care of any transfigured human, even the full 1,000 given to Mahito would be erased in seconds. As for Shigaraki, the moment Mahito touches him and puts him at risk of death, Shigaraki should be able to see him, even for a brief moment (given what happened to Yuji’s friends in chapter 1). Going forward in the fight, Shigaraki can see Mahito’s outline with Search and should be able to completely see and hear him after another usage of Idle of Transfiguration. The All For One Quirk’s ability to resonate with Vestiges should allow Shig to see Mahito, and hear him.

It's also noted that there are indeed people who can see Curses but cant use Jujutsu. If Shigaraki were argued to fall under the zero Cursed Energy category, given it does not exist in MHA, he might fall under the Toji category and be able to see curses anyways. It is also possible to note the movement of a Curse by using the environment, like changes in air density for example. Infrared Ray and Vibration Sensing should be able to pick up on these in order to find Mahito. You can actually see curses without curse energy, they exist in a different light spectrum, the person would just just need a method to see that. Sorcerers' brains are wired to see them, and non sorcerers can use special glasses to see them.

As for Idle transfiguration itself, the ability allows Mahito to take out the Nomus out of the fight pretty quick, either turning them into minions or outright killing them. In regards to applying it to Shig, that is where things get interesting. Due to the difficulty Mahito has with targeting individual souls (as shown with Sukuna), he cannot target Shigaraki’s soul without first going through the AFO Vestige merged with it. AFO’s own Vestige has an army of Vestige shades attached to it, and all of them act as a defense mechanism against invading Vestiges/spiritual forces (as shown with Star and Stripe). Their defense comes with a caveat, in that any Vestige destroyed will in turn internally detonate the quirk factor connected to said Vestige shade. While the exact number of Vestiges in AFO is unknown, we do know he has absorbed multiple quirks for over a hundred years. The sheer number of them proved to be Star and Stripe’s ultimate downfall, as her own Vestige burned out and was destroyed. Mahito opens himself up to direct damage on his soul the moment he touches Shig to transfigure him.

What about instantly killing Shig then to overcome this? This option is unlikely. Star could not instantly destroy AFO’s own Vestige; she had to go through his entire Vestige stock to leave any lasting damage, and the Vestige (AFO) was later shown intact when ShigAFO fought the heroes in the U.A dome. Furthermore, the AFO Vestige can devour Vestiges itself and use Shigaraki’s willpower in tandem with his own power to erode the world of OFA (and by extension its rules). The only reason this failed was that all the Vestiges with OFA fought back equally and that the AFO quirk had not fully settled into Shigaraki’s body (since he was 75% complete at the time). Brief exposure to Shig’s erosion caused notable cracks on AFO’s own Vestige, who had to suppress Shig to prevent his own destruction. While Mahito can cause severe damage to Shig’s body by destroying his Quirk factors, it is unlikely he can reshape Shig’s own soul right off the bat.

We know that Tomura is able to hide off in his own inner world, and is capable of tearing apart the AFO Vestige by himself (this despite its defense mechanisms). The inner world is shown to exist inside the AFO Vestige, meaning to even reach Shig, Mahito must first take care of AFO. Not even Mahito’s Domain can overcome his lack of skill in dealing with individual souls. His 0.2 version likely can assist here, but the window for transfiguration is limited due to the time-frame. When used on Todo, Mahito was only able to affect a single arm in 0.2 seconds. Despite this, Mahito can still leave lasting damage. He can destroy Vestiges individually with each touch, which will in turn cause internal damage to Tomura. Wounds inflicted with Idle Transfiguration cannot be traditionally healed, rendering Shig’s Hyper Regeneration useless. The issue here is Mahito does not have the range to affect every Vestige with AFO at once. Kenjaku was only able to affect a thousand people across Japan with Mahito’s power after further bolstering it with Uzamaki and having prepared beforehand.

Given Shig’s different defense mechanisms to his soul being touched/reshaped, Mahito’s best option is continuous attacks to clear out the Vestiges and leave lasting damage. This option however also has issues. Continuous attempts at touching Shig risks Mahito’s own soul taking damage (think of it like Yuji punching him and leaving lasting damage) from the Vestige onslaught or Shig’s own erosion effect (which AFO can bolster). Mahito cannot actually heal his own soul, at best he gives off the bluff he can. While a single attack on the soul will not kill him, several in repetition absolutely will. Furthermore, damage to the soul will weaken Mahito (as was the case when Nobara harmed his soul).

Mahito really doesn't really have a way out of risking himself. He lacks any other ability that can actually harm Shigaraki. Using Shig’s Nomus against him does not amount to much as they can be dealt with swiftly. Mahito using Domain does not favor him either, since it's a single-use ability and using it weakens his abilities for a bit after usage. The inner world of AFO works similar to an Innate Domain. Sukuna, whom Mahito can't affect with Idle Transfiguration (since his soul is inside Yuji), spends most of his time within an Innate Domain inside Yuji. Additionally, a Simple Domain produced by Mechamaru was able to negate the long-distance Idle Transfiguration from Mahito's own Domain Expansion. Coupled with the similarities between Vestiges and souls, it would lend even more credence to the idea that AFO + Shiggy's many quirk Vestiges would screw with Mahito's ability to transfigure him. As mentioned prior, Mahito lacks the skill to target individual souls, as Shigaraki himself hides in his own inner world. A 0.2 Domain lacks the timeframe to do much damage to Shig and uses up a massive amount of Cursed Energy to use.

Well what about lasting damage? Earlier we said Tomura cannot heal wounds from Mahito. Shigaraki has a workaround here too. His evolution allows him to essentially generate new body parts, rather than outright heal. He generates a wave of hands, heads (for his defense form), and even has generated a new upper body for himself. The ability in function is different from reverse curse technique or hyper regeneration, it is an ability completely divorced from quirks themselves. Say Mahito reshapes Shig’s arms so he cant use AFO or Decay. Evolution will generate new arms that can use said quirks. Tomura can grow hundreds of them at a time. What if Mahito destroys his eyes? Shigaraki has shown the ability to make eyes and entire heads. The only downside to this is that Tomura’s durability temporarily drops when using this method, at least in the case of recreating his entire upper body.

If Mahito were to say, target useful Vestiges like Search, there is the chance Shig will adapt per his Evolution. Tomura’s Evolution comes from the fact his body is adapting to his quirk stock, so it shouldn't be far-fetched that he could generate physical features from them if needed. Even if he cannot, AFO’s own resonance ability would still let Shig see Mahito. It is unlikely Mahito can destroy the Decay quirk as it is linked to Shig's soul/Vestige. Attempting to touch it risks Mahito's soul being damaged.

Mahito’s usage of mental warfare won’t be a factor here. AFO and Tomura lack Yuji’s morals, and Mahito has no prior knowledge on either to exploit. His clone and Isomers don't really add anything to the fight. At most Mahito might be able to pull a fake out with a clone for a surprise attack, but the clones would be easily sent flying.

Tomura has several quirks that can keep Mahito locked down and open to decay. Furthermore, Search would let him see if Mahito is hiding. Mahito can hide his soul in a piece of his body that he separates from the rest which Search cannot see. Resonance might be able to see this but regardless Shig has the AoE to hit him. Mahito can enrage and cause AFO despair by destroying important quirks, which can lead him to landing a Black Flash and restoring his energy to some extent. This in turn runs the risk Shigaraki just takes over AFO and unleashes a certain quirk….

Now the final question is, can Shig even kill Mahito? Shig can only leave damage to Mahito’s soul when Mahito touches him. Mahito has an invulnerability to physical damage (from damage not laced with Cursed Energy) and two regeneration options. Curses can heal from wounds like severed arms quickly, and Mahito can reshape his body using his soul, even if he’s reduced to pieces. In there though lies the answer. Decay is a quirk that bypasses durability:

Decay is not a physical attack curses would be immune to. It can decay glass, which can take 1 million years to decompose, and Curses are physically present in the world. Mahito even bleeds after Yuji punches him. JJK actually has a similar ability, which is notably not resisted in-verse besides Sukuna (it's also clearly inferior to Shigaraki’s Decay). While the Decay rate for the quirk used to be slow, the speed has notably increased, as has its range. Shigaraki was able to decompose a third of Jaku in barely any time, and can further expand the AoE with his generated hands (of which he can make hundreds or more). Mahito simply does not have the speed to escape them, especially if Shigaraki grabs him directly. Any time Mahito attempts to use transfiguration, he opens himself to be touched. During the events of the fight with Re-Destro, Shigaraki showed even exposure to two fingers was enough to begin the corrosion effect of Decay. Shig can also increase his movement speed by pushing his body to blitz Mahito even faster to use Decay. If Mahito attempts to fly away, Shig has multiple flight options, which also includes the very fast Wing quirk.

As for Mahito’s regen, it's implied it has limits. Mahito does have an implied limit. Mahito actually states that there is a limit to how big/small he can mutate human bodies by changing the shape of their soul (he was experimenting to learn this). It follows that there are limits to how far he can modify the shape of his own body as well. If Mahito's body was reduced to blood/vapor/atoms, we don't know if that counts as a 'body' anymore or if that kind of precision is within his capabilities. There's also the series implication Mahito is wrong about the nature of the soul. The whole point of the scene with Mahito's statement is to highlight his ignorance and pride. Kenjaku backs down because there is no reason to drag on the issue, but later Mahito is disproven by Yaga being able to create souls from body info and Toji was able to reclaim his memories from body information as well. It should also be noted that Mahito is not the best judge of his abilities. He was born at the beginning of the manga and his whole life was spent learning more about the world. He also falsely held the belief that the soul took precedence over the body, which has been shown to be false as both are two sides of the same coin (information). So given we have never seen him replicate such a level of regeneration, it is also very possible that he was boasting or just incorrect in his assumption.

At best he has shown regenerating from detonating himself. Given a full exposure from decay would erase his entire body, there would be no body to reform from reshaping his soul. As mentioned earlier, Decay’s speed increased overtime, so it's unlikely Mahito could simply remove the affected part of his body once caught by it. Even being touched by debris Decay is traveling on is enough to fully spread it across a body. Given that Decay can do in Mahito, and he risks the death of his soul each time he touches Shig (which at most gets partial damage done to Shig via internal damage), Tomura has the advantage in abilities. He can decimate the numbers advantage Mahito has with a flip of a wrist. He can also likely resist the mental control of Idle Transfiguration, as shown in his resistance section. To close out, it's important to mention the invulnerability to physical damage Curses have should not be treated as some no limits fallacy. If say, Goku were to punch Mahito, the Curse is going to be popped. A strong enough force should be able to bypass it, at least to some extent.

Some minor stuff:

- Mahito can cut off Shiggy’s ability to give Nomu’s order (via Radio Waves) with a Curtain

- Nanami proves that someone with defenses against Mahito’s hax won't be immediately damaged by it that much

-As for the effects Cursed Energy can cause on the body of humans, these effects are normally caused by wounds. Shigaraki can use his Quirks to hold off pain caused by it and is unlikely to feel ill from it due to his modified body.

Shigaraki takes the edge in abilities.

Tertiary Factors

When it comes to fighting skill, both are sufficiently self taught. Their practice mostly being during high stake battles rather than in training, though they have both undergone comparable amounts of training. In terms of hand to hand combat though, Mahito has an obvious advantage. Yeah sure, he got infamously tag teamed and could not, uh, “fight back”, one time against Yuji and Nanami, but apart from that he has rather impressive showings. Prior to that beat down he was actually going even with the duo.

In comparison, Shigaraki is rather embarrassing at hand to hand combat in comparison. He is definitely good at close quarters fighting, as shown with his fights against Redestro and Deku, do not get the implication we are calling him a bad fighter. But when it comes to individual fist versus fist fighting, he does not do the best. This was shown with his fight against a 100% One For All Deku during the War Arc, where he heavily struggled to combat Deku’s onslaught. His master All For One also does not have the best track record in this regard, considering how All Might was able to easily utilize a feint to land a heavy blow on All For One during their final battle at Kamino. Shigaraki and his master are simply more accustomed to heavy ability usage rather than traditional beat’em up combat.

On the topic of All For One though, it is worth Shigaraki’s heavy experience advantage over Mahito thanks to the All For One Vestige. All For One himself has lived for several generations, constantly utilizing several abilities and encountering just as many unique ones in his lifetime. This experience should transition to Shigaraki, considering the presence of All For One’s Vestige. In comparison, Mahito did not have any experience doing anything extreme until he met Kenjaku. Meaning Shigaraki has a clear edge in terms of experience.

When it comes to numbers, this part is a bit weird. On one hand, Mahito does have more transfigured humans than Shigaraki has Nomu. But on the other hand, the Nomu are clearly far more versatile and powerful than any of the transfigured humans. And with All For One (the character) aiding Tomura, this would seemingly give him the advantage over Mahito when it comes to support. Unfortunately for him, Shigarkai’s Nomus lack the same spiritual resistances he himself has to Mahito’s more complex techniques. Meaning there is nothing stopping Mahito from using Idle Transfiguration on the Nomus, turning them to his side. So upon further analysis, Mahito does have the advantage when it comes to support. Albeit not immediately at the start of the battle.

To conclude, while Mahito is better in terms of skill, Shigaraki is more experienced. While Mahito has an expandable numbers advantage, it is not something Shigaraki has not experienced. He has fought several of Redestro’s minions at once, and the UA forces all by himself. The two basically go even more or less in terms of tertiary factors, though it seems the edge would more than likely go to Shigaraki, when you consider that his range would let him remove the numbers advantage all together rather quickly (note abilities section). Mahito is the more skilled one in hand to hand combat, at the very least. Shigaraki is no slouch, given Redestro’s praise, but it simply is not enough.

Mahito takes the slight edge, at least in direct skill.

Conclusion

"I'll carve a path through the world… even if it means destroying everything in my way."

Advantages:

  • Stronger, faster, more durable

  • Thanks to the Vestiges, would not be instantly defeated by Mahito’s Idle Transfiguration

  • His insane hatred would prevent any form of panicking, meaning Mahito cannot use Shigaraki's emotions to power himself…

  • Can directly affect Mahito’s own soul if Idle Transfiguration is used

  • Decay overcomes Mahito’s invulnerability

  • Far superior area of effect

  • Search can locate Mahito, and Shigaraki can see Mahito if put in a near-death situation or via Resonance once Mahito touches him

  • Evolution grants alternatives to restore his body if it is damaged or warped by Mahito

  • Likely can resist the mental control aspect of Idle Transfiguration

  • Annihilates in the drip battle

  • Actually took back his main villain role

  • Multiple hands complement his gamer status well

Disadvantages:

  • Numbers disadvantage that can grow if Mahito converts Nomus

  • … but although Shigaraki would not get mentally screwed over, All For One (the character, Vestige in this case) could

  • Initially cannot see Mahito

  • The destruction of his Vestiges can physically damage his body

  • Hyper Regeneration cannot heal wounds caused by Mahito’s powers

  • Healing done by Evolution can leave his body weakened for a small amount of time

  • Yoshikage Kira

  • Daddy issues squared

  • Made us have to specify between the Quirk and character All For One a fucking lot like seriously

"Before I knew it, I was tricking, deceiving, and murdering — and I felt fulfilled. Just as humans eat, sleep, and screw, I think that's a curse's instinct."

Advantages:

  • Initially invisible to Shigaraki

  • His physiology and regeneration make him unable to die to traditional means…

  • Has no Quirk, so Quirk destroying bullets are irrelevant

  • Any wounds or changes to Shigaraki caused by Idle Transfiguration cannot be healed by traditional regeneration

  • Has the numbers advantage, and could expand said advantage by transfiguring Nomu

  • Could put Shigaraki’s Vestiges like All For One (Vestige) into despair to gain a power increase

  • Can affect Vestiges, which will cause backlash to Shigaraki’s body

  • Less in need of chapstick

  • Absolutely rocked the schoolgirl outfit

  • Can’t have daddy issues if you don’t have parents

Disadvantages:

  • Weaker, slower, less durable

  • …but direct contact with Decay should be able to put him down for good

  • Shigaraki can touch him, and will eventually be able to see him

  • Using Idle Transfiguration or Domain Expansion opens him up to his soul being damaged by Shigaraki or his Vestiges

  • Cannot selectively target Shigaraki’s soul without first going through his Vestige count or All For One’s Vestige, as he lacks the skill to do so

  • Yoshikage Kira

  • Does not have a penis

  • Bozo’s canon death was getting vored

Both Shigaraki and Mahito have grown to become powerful villains of their respective worlds, however, only one of them will end up the victor of this battle. In order to do that, we needed to look at everything they both had to offer.

In terms of stats, Shigaraki gets the upper hand. Currently at his strongest, Shigaraki is able to contend with Deku using 100% of One For All. At this level, Deku and Bakugo were able to disperse a storm created by Nine in the second MHA movie, and it’s likely that with the power boosts that have happened since then, Shigaraki currently scales to the whole feat, 5.7 teratons of TNT. Meanwhile for Mahito, his power is nowhere near close. Even being generous and fully scaling him to Jogo’s meteor, the feat caps out at 832 kilotons for its high end. The increase from Instant Spirit Body of Distorted Killing simply does not compare to even a lowballed Shigaraki. Shiggy is also far faster than Mahito, at 2% the speed of light in reactions/combat, well over Mahito’s Mach 284. Even without calcs, Shigaraki is narratively faster. He makes shockwaves with his basic movements, which is something generally only shown by speedsters like Naoya in JJK.

Mahito takes the minor edge in skill, being far better at hand to hand combat and in general better at in-combat multitasking. Shigaraki is not far off however, given Re-Destro’s comment that Shigaraki gives the impression of someone trained through life and death situations for a long time, and the decades of experience from All For One’s Vestige at his disposal. Lastly, they both have their own respective army for support. While Mahito’s army of transfigured humans are larger, Shigaraki’s army of Nomus are stronger and more versatile. Despite the Nomus lacking the same resistances Tomura has to Mahito’s abilities, one-shotting armies is normal for the MHA villain, especially since he’s willing to sacrifice his Nomus to survive. Likewise, Mahito’s psychological style of combat with using Transfigured Humans will be useless against Shigaraki and AFO. Neither truly cares about random civilians and Mahito does not know the League or Tomura’s family to exploit any possible reaction.

In terms of abilities, Shigaraki has all the tools to come out on top. The unique defenses AFO provides, alongside his own destructive willpower/erosion act as a suitable counter to Idle Transfiguration. Mahito has to go through far too many Vestiges, and Tomura’s evolution abilities offer a work around for damage Transfiguration might leave on Shig. On the flipside, these same defenses can harm Mahito in a way he cannot heal from, and Decay acts a definitive kill against him. It does not help Mahito’s case that Shigaraki has multiple methods to see or sense Mahito. Even turning the Nomus on Tomura or invoking an army of Transfigured Humans is not enough to defeat him, as he can casually mow them all down. Mahito's best bet is a quick-fire Domain, but the usefulness of the ability is limited by the short time-frame it lasts, alongside the fact that it's a single-use ability. Combined with the fact Mahito lacks the skill to target individual souls with a full usage of Domain, and the fact that it weakens his abilities for a while after usage, and it’s checkmate.

Overall, Shigaraki has the complete advantage in the stat trinity as well as other advantages in better abilities and experience. While Mahito is better at hand to hand combat and can turn Shigaraki’s Nomus against him, it isn’t enough to overwhelm Tomura. Even his best technique isn’t enough to seal the deal for him. In the end, Mahito will crumble because unbeknownst to him, he was in Shigaraki’s domain all along.

Pretend we also made a hand joke.

The winner is Tomura Shigaraki.
