Action movie heroes are a dime a dozen these days. It takes a lot more than a guy with two fists and a pistol to stand apart from the crowd. You need guts, heart, and soul to create something that will stick with the audience. Behind their escapades of asskicking, today’s cultured combatants have loved and lost, yearned and abandoned, all to be pulled back into whatever mission they must accomplish.
As Season 9 resumes, old meets new when two of the most badass individuals in all things killing and espionage suit up for a final conflict, and only one will be walking off into the moonlight. Will the genre-defining 007 prove why he’s a generational icon, or will the emissary of death bury yet another body in record time? Bullets will fly in this next DEATH BATTLE!
Before We Begin…
As it should be no surprise, Bond has A LOT of content; from the books, films, games, monopoly sets etc. For the sake of this battle, we'll be primarily compositing all 25 films, related games and comics, despite some incarnations of the character showing clear differences from past adaptations (including Daniel Craig’s portrayal of Bond, as that's how Death Battle is approaching the battle). However, due to the abundance of gadgetry shown, we'll also be only focusing on those that make a difference in a one-on-one fight; as such, the blog isn’t including some of Bond’s wackier gear like prosthetic nipples or radioactive lints.
On the other hand, Wick's content is a lot more straightforward. We'll be primarily using the movies and comics as well both the VR and third-person strategy video games. No Fortnite though, I’m afraid.
With that out of the way, let's begin.
Background
James Bond
“The name’s Bond. James Bond.”
The British Secret Intelligence Service, also known as MI6, has a covert unit called the ‘Double-O’ (‘00’) Branch. Belonging to this branch are the elite field agents, who have earned their own licenses to kill, permitting them to do so at their own discretion if they see fit for their mission. Of these super spies, one particularly dapper man stands out from the rest, codename 007, but he’d much rather introduce himself as Bond. James Bond.
Bond was born on April 13, 1968, in Glencoe, Scotland, in the United Kingdom, and not from extraordinary heritage. His father Andrew was a mere Senior Accounts Manager for Vickers Defence Systems, while his mother Monique was originally from Switzerland. Until the age of 11, Bond was educated in Switzerland and Germany. Sadly, like with most heroes, his parents didn’t last very long. Both of them died tragically in a climbing accident while trying to scale Aiguille de la Persévérance. After this harrowing event, Bond was privately tutored and lived in his family's estate in Scotland, Skyfall Lodge (roll credits). He attended various prestigious schools, and though he was a bit of a womanizing troublemaker in his early years, he formed into a talented athlete, learning various schools of martial arts along the way.
After graduating from Fettes at the age of 17, Bond began attending the Britannia Royal Naval College, leading to a military career. And to say he excelled would be an understatement. He joined the 030 Special Forces Unit, becoming a skilled operator of assault helicopters, Harrier-class jets, fixed wing aircraft, hovercrafts, marine assault vessels, armored vehicles, and other vehicles (he’s a jack of all trades). Due to Bond’s skill, he became a teacher to the other candidates in the unit, creating athletic competitions, and fostering a creative environment so that his students would grow. During his three-year tenure with the 030 unit, Bond rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander, which for someone his age was quite impressive. He saw service in Iraq, Somalia, Iran, Libya, and active service in Bosnia.
Bond moved on up to the RNR Defense Intelligence Group, becoming commander. During his tenure at the RNR DI Group, he attended specialized courses at Cambridge and Oxford, the best education the United Kingdom has to offer. From there, he would achieve legendary status by joining MI6, completing his training in just eight weeks. And soon enough, he became the youngest Double-O agent in history, and was awarded his infamous code number.
Bond’s entire life was centered around a more pragmatic lifestyle, losing his parents as a boy and having extensive military history. As a spy, he used his suave disposition and good looks to charm women and play poker… oh, and assassinate a bunch of people. He has decades of adventures under his belt, and has faced the most outlandish villains the world has ever seen, but he never cracks under the pressure.
Well, that is, before he married one woman that particularly caught his eye, Tracy, and witnessed her be shot in the head in the line of duty. Bond spent so much time as a calculated killer, detached from the world in favor of completing his missions and indulging in the fun vices that came along, that sometimes it’s hard to remember that human side. This heavy toll would darken his outlook on what he was, but he served Her Majesty the best he could, and it seems even when he retires, something will pull him back in. Regardless of the situation, 007 is an absolute unit, and he sure as hell looks good doing what he does.
John Wick
There is a man, so feared in the criminal underworld that his title is the Baba Yaga. The Boogeyman. Er, well, it’s actually a Slavic folklore about an evil witch that devours children and uses their bones as decor, but that’s not important. This legendary contract assassin has a body count like no other, yet his is a truly tragic tale. This is John Wick.
Born Jardani Jovonovich, Wick was a child orphan in Belarus before he was taken in by the Director, the woman in charge of the Ruska Roma, a prominent criminal organization. There, he would be trained in the art of killing, and by the time he became a man, would dive into the crazy criminal sphere that inhabits his world.
After some time in the Marine Corps, John became a hitman, joining the Continental Hotel of New York, a criminal safe space where business of any kind could not be conducted. If that wasn’t crazy enough, he would work under the Russian mob boss, Viggo Tarasov, performing excellently for years before meeting the love of his life. He loved her so much, he wanted to leave the assassin's life and get clean, but Viggo would only let him go if he completed a seemingly impossible task… which he did. Wick would be able to marry his wonderful Helen and live free of that horrible, horrible life. …Yeah, right.
Helen tragically died of an illness, and posthumously gifted a grieving Wick a pup named Daisy. Life seemed quiet and barren until Viggo’s son, without any knowledge of who John was, broke into his house, stole his car, and killed his dog. That last one was especially bad, not only because dog killers are the worst, but because Daisy was a dear reminder of his late wife. This violently injected John back into the game, a broken man only wanting peace now hellbent on revenge for having it taken away from him. Viggo knew what he had built was at stake at the hands of this one man and did everything he could to weather the incoming storm. Unfortunately for him, he was up against John Wick.
Wick tracked down and murdered both him and his son, going through all kinds of goons along the way. He was back to racking up kills in record time, and that obviously gained the attention of former associates and enemies alike. That impossible task he completed? He actually got help from another mob boss named Santino D’Antonio, who had him pay his debt by killing his sister, which would elevate him to the High Table, the head honchos of this whole shindig.
Long story short, the sister killed herself in front of Wick, Santino selfishly tried to punish Wick for doing what he was told, a bounty was placed on his head, he killed a bunch of guards and hitmen, and found himself facing Santino in the Continental. After breaking its rule of neutrality by killing him then and there, Wick was declared “excommunicado”, putting a worldwide open multi-million dollar contract on his head.
After fighting his way through numerous murder attempts, to save himself from the High Table’s wrath, he sought out The Elder, the only man with more power than the High Table, and asked for forgiveness. To atone, he had to kill the owner of the Continental, his trusted friend, Winston, who didn’t execute him on the spot for his rule breaking. He refused, and Winston stood his ground, so neutrality was revoked and Wick was forced to fight actual ninjas sent by the High Table. Of course, he won. But at the end of it all, he was shot off a roof by Winston himself, surviving the fall, but with major injuries. And for now, that is where his story has left off. But whatever is to come, one thing is for certain: when John Wick and his remaining associates face the High Table, the people responsible for ruining his life, he’ll kill them. He’ll kill them all. And most importantly, he got himself a new, very much alive, dog.
Equipment
James Bond
Protective Jacket
Bond always makes sure to dress to impress, and that’s reflected in the suit jacket that Q specially provides for him, which can deploy a protective bubble shell around Bond to defend him from any and all danger, such as an avalanche coming down on top of him. However, it is vulnerable to blades, as seen when Bond himself cut through it to free himself after said avalanche.
Body Armor
Body armor that Bond can put on. By wearing this, he can survive shots from rockets, grenades, and all sorts of gunfire. However, it does wear down and can eventually be rendered useless.
Nanosuit
A suit that Bond wore during Everything or Nothing that’s capable of turning him invisible for a short time.
X-Ray Sunglasses
A pair of sunglasses equipped with X-Ray vision, allowing the wearer to check for concealed weapons with the additional bonus of checking out the ladies.
Binocular Glasses
Used during the Living Daylights to spy and gather information from other from afar.
Detonator Spectacles
A detonator disguised as a pair of glasses, that no one would see coming. Remotely detonates an explosive "flash-bang" charge concealed in Bond's firearm.
Beretta 418
Bond’s weapon of choice for 10 years: a small 6.35 mm gun with an 8-shot magazine that can be easily concealed. However, later, a new, much more iconic pistol gets assigned to Bond due to a fan letter from a retired army general calling it a “lady’s gun” having an inferior stopping power and the silencer getting caught in the waistband of Bond’s trousers at the worst of times, leading to serious injuries.
Walther PPK
As iconic as it is reliable. The PPK is Bond’s primary handgun for the majority of his career. 7.65 mm concealable weapon with a delivery like a brick through a plate glass window. Takes a Brausch silencer with very little reduction in muzzle velocity for silent but deadly takedowns.
Walther PPK/S
An even more personal modification of a legendary weapon, and literally imbued with Bond’s persona. Micro-dermal sensors in the grip coded to Bond’s palm prints, meaning no one but him can wield it. Making every shot less of a shot and more of a personal statement.
Walther P38
A gun that Bond stashes in his Aston Martin and greets Goldfinger’s men with in their first encounter at the melting factory.
Walther P5
Because Walther needed to promote their new product Bond misplaced his original PPK, he was given a 9 mm Walther P5 Compact by Q for a mission in India. An old-fashioned handgun with an 8-shot magazine.
Walther P99
A replacement for the legendary PPK from a more modern age by Bond’s own request. A new high-tech spin on the classic Walther is a 9 mm sidearm prominently used by Bond throughout the 90s and into the 2000s. Naturally comes with a silencer.
FN Model 1910
A gun briefly used by Bond during the Kingston mission with an attachable suppressor, perfect for intimidating and liquidating a target. Contains more than 6 rounds, which evidently makes it more reliable than Smith & Wesson.
Glock 17
A pistol that Bond uses fairly often - and who can blame him? This Glock stands the test of time and is essentially a go-to handgun for first-world countries. But 007 went a step further and also brought to his missions a FAB Defense KPOS Carbine Conversion kit, with a suppressor and a laser sight, turning a handgun into a carbine.
Colt Detective Special
A revolver used by 007 while going undercover as a Japanese fisherman, used to liquidate an unsuccessful assassin who poisoned Bond’s fiancé at the time.
Smith & Wesson Model 29
.44 Magnum revolver, used by Bond during the rescue mission of a Tarot card reader in San Monique.
Dart Gun
A non-lethal firearm that shoots tranquilizer darts, temporarily sedating its target.
Sterling L2A3
A British submachine gun that Bond wields on several occasions throughout his missions, usually in some large-scale scuffle like storming or escaping the enemy's lair.
Calico M950A
A pistol version of the 9x19mm carbine, used in Agent Under Fire.
MP5K
Another submachine gun that Bond used to storm Elliot Carver's highly advanced submersible base of operation.
Mac-10
Open bolt submachine gun that was used by Bond during Agent Under Fire.
UMP-9
A suppressed submachine gun 007 used to apprehend and secure the catch of the co-founder of SPECTRE Mr. White.
AKMS
One of many AK derivatives that Bond resorts to using during his many outings. For example Afghanistan, while making his escape from a Russian airbase.
AKS-74U
The compact version of an AK-74 that 007 also finds himself frequently using when going up against Soviet and ex-Soviet forces. Go figure.
AR-18
Assault rifle 007 used while crashing the party of arm dealers on the outskirts of Russia.
Heckler & Koch HK416
Yet another assault rifle Bond uses to dispatch waves of enemies. This time used in GoldenEye: Rogue Agent.
Colt Mk18 Mod 0
A modified rifle fitted with an EOTech sight, suppressor, and canted iron sights that Commander Bond uses during his final mission.
Anderson Wheeler 500 NE Double Rifle
A two-shot hunting rifle belonging to James’s father. Has a very powerful shot radius which allows Bond to be able to shoot multiple enemies in close proximity at the same time or accurately shoot down a target from afar.
Armalite AR-7 Survival Rifle
Modified by Q Department, it's a .25 precision rifle with a fine wooden buttstock, an infra-red scope and mount as well as a silencer-equipped barrel. Concealed and stored within 007’s attaché case, assembly required.
Walther WA 2000
Semi-automatic bullpup sniper rifle that Bond uses to snipe a presumed KGB sniper. 007 prefers to load it with steel-tipped rounds, perfect for getting through the target's body armor.
Accuracy International Arctic Warfare
Sniper rifle with a futuristic scope of sorts that 007 used in an assassination attmept on Colonel Moon’s life.
Signature Rifle
Say cheese. This Sniper Rifle, upon first glance, will appear to be little more than an ordinary camera. You may be asking yourself; “What kind of film does it take? One, twenty?” The answer is two twenty, high caliber, incredibly fatal to anyone shot by it. Furthermore, it has scanner technology built into it so that it recognizes Bond’s fingerprints, allowing only him to wield it.
Ski-Pole Rifle
Yet another unexpected rifle hidden in an ordinary object, this time it’s in a ski-pole. Capable of firing the spiky end off like a harpoon.
Knives
Indispensable in a close-quarters fight, perfect for a silent kill and useful as a general tool, every agent should always have one with him. Combat knives, smaller boot knives, hunting knives, even knives with transmitters hidden within them; Bond is proficient with any kind. He’s an excellent thrower of them as well.
Various Wristwatches
007 used a sizable variety of incredibly stylish but also practical watch gadgets throughout the years, each one having a unique function to fit the mission at hand. Such as:
Luminous Rolex Wristwatch - Rolex 6538 Submariner watch with a slightly radioactive dial.
Garotte Wristwatch - Obtained from the defeated SPECTRE agent Red Grant, wristwatch from which a garotte can be drawn.
Geiger Counter Wristwatch - A modified Breitling Top Time wristwatch containing a sensitive built-in Geiger counter for measuring radioactivity.
Magnetic/buzzsaw Wristwatch - Modified Rolex Submariner wristwatch is an incredibly stylish and practical gadget. With a single button press it can create a hyper-intensified magnetic field powerful enough to even deflect the path of a bullet at long range (or so Q claims). Or attract desirable metal objects to its wielder such as weapons, ammo, keys etc. Also contains a circular saw; the bezel spins and is capable of cutting a rope bounding Bond by the hands.
Seiko 0674 Wristwatch - A modified Seiko 0674 wristwatch. Basically works like a pager, it had a built-in telex that allowed MI6 to send important messages to Bond, printing them out like a miniature teletype.
Explosive Wristwatch - A modified Seiko caliber M354-5019 wristwatch. It contains a small circular reel of explosive inside a rear compartment. Once placed, the explosives and fuse are linked to the watch by a small length of wire. The wristwatch itself acts as the detonator.
Communication Wristwatch - A modified Seiko Duo-Time H357 wristwatch. Receives digital message read-outs on the small LCD display above the analogue watch-face. It also contains a 2-way radio/transmitter for voice communications.
Tracker Wristwatch - A modified Seiko Sports 100 G757 wristwatch. Contains a universal radio direction finder which works in conjunction with a homing device.
TV Wristwatch - A modified Liquid Crystal TV Seiko T001-5019 wristwatch. Receives moving images over the air and displays them on the watch's color LCD panel.
Laser Wristwatch - A modified Omega Seamaster wristwatch with a built-in laser cutter and remote detonator.
Explosive Wristwatch… again - A modified Omega Seamaster wristwatch taken by Bond from the Chinese safehouse that had a small, detachable charge that could be detonated by turning the watch's dial.
Wristwatch Grapple - A modified Omega Seamaster wristwatch. Contains a grappling hook with fifty feet of high-tensile micro-filament, able to support 800 pounds of weight and a high intensity lighted bezel.
Cutter/Detonator Wristwatch - Contains an explosive detonator and laser beam cutter. modified Omega Seamaster wristwatch.
Omega Seamaster - Yet another explosive watch with a built-in timer.
Wrist-Mounted Dart Gun
A literal ace up the agent’s sleeve. Worn like a wristwatch, the gun is activated by nerve impulses from the wrist muscles. Ammunition consists of five darts with armor-piercing heads and five cyanide-coated ones, capable of killing a target in 30 seconds.
Explosive Pen
An unconventional deadly explosive weapon disguised as an ordinary pen. To trigger the explosive pen, it requires Bond to click the pen three times to detonate its explosive. If he wishes to defuse it, he can click it three times once again.
Pen Gun
What’s more of a “spy gadget” than turning an ordinary everyday thing that one can bring along anywhere into a deadly weapon? Perfect example is Bond’s pen gun. Yes, that's right. This little guy can shoot explosive rockets as well as tranquilizer shots and shocking darts. You know what they say, a pen is mightier than a sword.
Acid Fountain Pen
A simple pen which contains a highly concentrated mixture of Nitric and Hydrochloric acids, which can be dispensed by twisting the end.
Attaché Case
A standard-issue briefcase for the 00 agents with several hidden features, such as two flat throwing-knife at the top corner of the case, 20 rounds of ammunition stored in 2 cylinders hidden in its base, and fifty gold sovereigns concealed in the lining of the case. The case also contains an anti-tampering mechanism with a magnetized tear-gas cartridge. Also contains an AR-7 sniper rifle in a reassembled state. Later models contained explosives.
Ericsson JB988
Once again modified by Q, it is quite a nifty little device that can flip open, revealing a touchpad to remotely control Bond’s BMW 750iL, as well as activate its defense mechanism. But even without that, it contains within itself a fingerprint scanner, key replicator and a 20,000 volt taser.
Grappling Hook
Grappling device developed by the British Secret Intelligence Service's research and development division, Q-Branch. Fires a grappling hook and has a dart and laser cutting attachment. Indispensable for any kind of infiltration mission, allowing the agent to overcome any obstacle in his way.
Rappelling Belt
A size 34 leather belt. It conceals a piton hidden behind the buckle. It can fire out up to 75 feet of high-tensile wire designed to support the weight of an average person.
Bell Rocket Belt
A low-power rocket propulsion device that allows an individual to safely travel or leap over small distances.
Miniature Rebrither
Convenient pocket-sized cylinder containing an emergency air supply for approximately four minutes.
Shooting Cigarette
Smoking indeed kills. This cigarette is capable of shooting a jet powered projectile accurately up to thirty yards carrying enough force to kill a man in one shot.
Pocket Snap Trap
A small gadget hidden in a pocket to give a person performing an unwanted search on the wielder a painful surprise that would provide a critical distraction for the wielder to exploit for an attack.
Key Finder
Q-Branch modified Philips Key Finder. Contains a set of skeleton keys designed to unlock 90% of the world's locks, a magnetic fastening strip and some clever audio-actuated modifications. Whistling the first bar of "Rule Britannia" causes it to spray stun gas, capable of disorienting an average person at a range of five feet for approximately 30 seconds. And a personalized actuating signal (in 007's case, a "wolf whistle") would trigger an integrated plastic explosive charge; sufficient to remove the door of any safe.
Dentonite Toothpaste
The one 9/10 dentists don’t approve of. This whitening cavity protector is actually the latest in plastic explosives. By covertly spreading the toothpaste within anywhere he chooses, Bond can set it off with the appropriate detonator for an explosion that is completely unexpected. If that doesn’t fight off Gingivitis, nothing will.
Cigarette Packet Detonator
You would think smoking and clean teeth would never go together, but you would be wrong. Just as hidden in plain sight as its partner, this detonator will set off the explosives set by the Dentonite Toothpaste, all while Bond merely seems like he’s simply killing his lungs at that moment.
Laser Polaroid Camera
Smile. For the last time. This polaroid shoots out a laser beam when the flash is used and also makes X-Ray pictures, presumably to know exactly what innards are blasted through.
Exploding Alarm Clock
Guaranteed never to wake up anyone who uses it.
Leiter Lighter
A little memento from Bond’s dear friend and a fellow secret agent from the other side of the Atlantic: Felix Leiter. Generates a huge burst of flames, perfect for lighting gasoline-drenched drug lords ablaze.
Limpet Mine
A high explosive, remotely-detonated mine. Bond's Omega Seamaster wristwatch acts as the detonator.
Cigarette Lighter Grenade
A disguised timed explosive guaranteed to blow all your nasty habits away.
Glass-Shattering Ring
Does exactly what is said on the tin. A standard issue ring that is secretly an ultra high-frequency single digit sonic agitator unit. By placing it on one and turning it clockwise, it can shatter even the toughest bulletproof glass.
Q Spider
A tiny spider created by Q that Bond can control remotely. It’s rather speedy for its size, and allows Bond a method for slipping into rather hard to enter areas. It also comes equipped with an explosive powerful enough to destroy machinery, although the spider is destroyed in the process. With the Nanosuit, the Q Spider is also capable of turning invisible.
Stunner
While initially looking like a regular set of keys, the Stunner is actually a powerful taser capable of shocking someone from a distance, bringing grown men to the ground in seconds.
Thermovision
A gadget capable of letting Bond see in the dark.
Strobe Grenade
A strobe grenade disguised as a coin. It is capable of blinding people for a couple seconds, leaving them open to attacks.
RC Car
A tiny car that can be released from Bond’s Cheyenne. Its intended purpose is for reconnaissance, but it also comes with a laser if the situation ever calls for it.
Briefcase Turret
A briefcase produced by Phoenix International that Bond can carry on hand in Nightfire. Once set down, the turret will automatically target anyone that comes into its line of fire, but can only turn one hundred and eight degrees, limiting the direction it can fire in.
Electric Shaver Grenade
A flashbang grenade disguised as an electric shaver. It can blind anyone in a room, including Bond if he’s not careful!
Aston Martin DB5
The most iconic Bond car of them all, this vehicle comes equipped with several weapons to help Bond while he’s making a grand getaway. This includes bulletproof paneling, along with being just generally impervious to bullets, machine guns and later miniguns, side-mounted rockets, forward-mounted rockets, air rockets, a mine dispenser, smoke screens, oil slick, water cannons, tire slashers, an EMP device, cutting laser, a rocket charge that is Q-Booster and of course, a passenger ejector seat.
Aston Martin V8
One of several variations of the Aston Martin, this model comes with its own unique arsenal, such as missiles, a heads-up display on the windshield, reinforced chassis to protect against bullets, a cutting laser, a rocket motor, tire spikes with retractable skis and a self-destruct button. Shockingly, no seats seem to get ejected out of this one.
Aston Martin V12 Vanquish
Yet another vehicle in the Aston Martin series, this model was given the nickname “Vanish” due to its unique ability to become invisible to the naked eye. Once again, this vehicle is effectively bulletproof and comes equipped with its own weapons, such as machine guns, target-seeking shotguns, missiles, a thermal imaging sensor, tire spikes and a Bond vehicle staple: the ejector seat. Also has the ability to transform into a submersible, allowing the vehicle to navigate underwater.
Aston Martin DB10
The most modern of Bond’s cars and just as bulletproof as its predecessors, the DB10 contains, what else, weapons to help Bond on a high-tension car chase, such as flamethrowers, machine guns, and the ejector seat, because of course.
Lotus Esprit S1 (1976)
Debuting in The Spy Who Loved Me, this 1976 car contains small rear nozzles that spray cement. Many of its weapons take advantage of its amphibiousness, being able to turn into a submersible and use a variety of different tools underwater, such as torpedoes, mines, disguising black dye, and a missile that only fires upwards. You know, in case a bird attacks.
Lotus Turbo Esprit (1980)
This Lotus model is aesthetically similar to the S1, but was mechanically different, and lacks the ability to become amphibious. Still, this vehicle is most notable for its security system, where it will explode upon unauthorized entry into the car, such as when Gonzales’ henchmen attempted to break the window in order to get inside.
BMW Z3
Debuting in GoldenEye, this 1996 convertible comes equipped with “the usual refinements.” Although its weapons are oddly never seen in action, the vehicle has been said by Q to contain them, including stinger missiles, a machine gun, a grenade launcher, ejector seat, emergency parachute and an LCD radar scanner.
BMW 750iL
Similar to the Esprit, the 750iL model BMW contains security systems to keep unwanted guests away, but also contains tear gas, rocket launchers, caltrop dispensers, cable cutters and re-inflating tires, as well as the ability to control it remotely via Bond’s phone.
BMW Z8
This car comes with, once again, all the usual refinements you’d expect from a Bond car at this point, including surface-to-air missiles, a targeting display for said missiles, and a remote control that allows Bond to control the car without the steering wheel. Also, in Agent Under Fire, the vehicle contains rockets, machine guns, a rocket motor, smoke screen, an EMP generator, and best of all… six cup holders. Now that’s convenience!
Porsche Cayenne Turbo
A powerful yet unassuming vehicle, armed with machine guns and missiles. It also has some other abilities, such as dispensing RC Cars for scouting and having the ability to turn invisible.
Triumph Daytona 600
A motorcycle Bond can ride when he needs to catch something quickly. It’s capable of firing off missiles, has a flamethrower and capable riding almost completely on its side, allowing Bond to slide under tight spaces.
Q-Boat
While technically incomplete, this seemingly small speedboat still packs quite a punch (literally) with its two homing torpedoes, machine guns, bulletproof exterior, submarine dive mode and afterburners to allow it to drive on land.
Little Nellie
A miniature helicopter use during You Only Live Twice but don't let the name fool you. This helicopter comes packed with dual machine guns, heat-seeking rockets, flamethrowers, smoke ejectors and can drop mines as well.

Style? Italian. Buttons? Two. Trousers? Tapered. Lining? Tactical. This is Wick’s custom suit, and aside from making him look absolutely stylish, it also accommodates silicon-carbon discs, ceramic matrices and accompanied laminate sewn in between the fabric and lining which allows it to stop bullets from low-caliber guns, while still being extremely flexible for him to move in. Wick sometimes wears a bulletproof vest on the inside for tougher missions. The belt can be used as an efficient weapon against knives and close-range weapons as well.

Primary gun used near the end of the third movie, recommended by Charon. With 22 rounds and 9x19mm major bullets it’s especially efficient, however, it was unable to pierce through High Table body armor despite Charon believing it would.

While the gun above couldn’t pierce through High Table body armor, this 7 tubular magazine sized, TTI M2 Ultimate 3 Gun Package customized shotgun could with its armor-piercing 12-gauge steel slugs.

What good for the end of the night? This 11-round, 12-gauge shotgun is of course! Fitted with a custom bolt release and charging handle as well as texture grip in case his hands get wet, it truly is an Italian classic.

A bullpup 12-gauge pump action shotgun that holds seven shells per tube that’s shown to be in Wick’s hidden weapon cache. He also uses one in the VR game with a laser sight.

An American rendition of the Heckler and Koch HK416, this heavy-caliber tactical rifle packs one hell of a punch with its shortened barrel, holographic sight, vertical grip, and a Magpul 30-round magazine. This gun annihilated Viggo’s men both at his hidden church vault and the parking lot shootout in the first movie.

While in the first movie, he stole this bolt-action rifle from a sniper guarding Iosef’s safehouse. In the games, he utilizes one of his own which comes with thermal scoping and five rounds.

Despite being one of, if not the most accomplished MI6 agent, at the end of the day, Bond is still a mortal man who has experienced failure in the past and is very much prone to dying in any one of his missions. God knows how many times he’s been captured before escaping. Plus, while he boasts a wide variety of gadgets and gizmos at his disposal over the years, only a decent chunk of them are useful for combat, while others are extremely situational, outright ridiculous… or both.
Also, has some sort of strange identity crisis where his entire face and body will change from movie to movie.
John Wick
John Wick is a man of focus, commitment, and sheer will, but in the end he’s just a man, and has failed his fair share of times before. Most of the time, he has some sort of mixture of his and somebody else’s blood on him, so it certainly shows. John is, unsurprisingly, quite volatile, and will thrust himself headfirst into danger, at his own peril.
And while his bulletproof suit does a great job of stopping oncoming fire, it still hurts tremendously.

Stats
Both James Bond and John Wick come from fairly grounded stories, so it’s only natural that in terms of feats, the two don’t get crazily high numbers in terms of what they can do physically, so in a way, this is actually pretty close in terms of stats. Still, where do these two stand and who’s the better of the two in the muscle department?
Starting off with Bond and his strength, he’s shown to be strong enough to kill with his bare hands. He can easily snap a man’s neck, tackle a man through a wall of metal bars, rip off a steel table from its hinges and use it as a weapon, and most notably, fight with and significantly harm Richard Kiel, AKA Jaws both physically and with his guns. Jaws is tough enough to survive falling out of a plane without a parachute, which means he must have survived an impact worth 515.814 kilojoules. To prove that this is consistent, Jaws has a bit of a habit of getting into these situations, such as when he survived both a train crash and a cable car crash, so being able to hurt him takes quite a bit of effort on Bond’s part. Plus, Jaws is strong enough to destroy steel beams, which should get anywhere from 19 to 95 megajoules, and Bond is able to take hits from him regularly.
Going into speed, Bond has several feats of dodging gunfire even at point blank ranges, drawing his gun faster than goons can react, dodging rocket launcher fire, and avoiding an explosion. It should be worth mentioning that Bond and others does have possible feats of moving in tandem in lasers in Goldfinger, Moonraker, License to Kill and Die Another Day, but these instances are not just dubious given the context of the scenes, but would likely be outliers anyway, so we’ll just ignore them for the sake of consistency and keeping things a bit more fair. Even without that, Bond has shown to be quite impressive in terms of his physical capabilities, but can the legendary hitman keep up?
Interestingly enough, Wick’s feats are relatively the same as Bond’s in terms of what he can dish out and survive, just to different extents. Wick can similarly snap a man’s neck with a karate chop, and was even strong enough to break a much larger man’s neck over a book. He can throw a man through a glass door, fight a 600 pound retired sumo wrestler, and fight a man who can snap an arm with relative ease. Wick was also able to survive being hit by a taxi, and once got kicked through multiple glass boxes in succession, so it’s pretty hard to keep him down for very long, as this means he can survive 2.97 megajoules. As for speed, similar to his opponent, Wick has feats of dodging gunfire and drawing his gun faster than the average man, and can even jump out of a moving car just before it falls off of a cliff.
So, comparing the two physically, Bond isn’t so far above Wick, but he would still take the edge fairly easily. Both are capable of taking down waves of goons, trained assassins and gunmen, and can survive things that no man should realistically come back from, but being able to fight the likes of Jaws puts Bond significantly above most anything Wick is physically capable of tanking. While Wick has taken on similarly large opponents, they simply haven’t shown the kind of resiliency Jaws has, someone who can survive numerous life-threatening dangers. And as for the destructive capabilities of their vehicles, there should be no debate as to who’s better between Bond’s and Wick’s; Wick might have an impressive car, but it’s severely outclassed by Bond’s plethora of weapon-armed cars throughout the years, as said weapons are capable of taking down helicopters and submarines, so it would no doubt make quick work of Wick’s car and likely Baba Yaga along with it if it ever came down to it.
All that being said, both are likely comparable in terms of speed and reaction timing; there’s not a whole lot of numbers we can use to compare the two statistically, but both generally have similar feats of being quicker on the draw than trained gunmen and dodging gunfire pretty regularly, so Bond and Wick are very likely even in that department.
However, while both have been known to take egregious amounts of pain over the years, both Bond and Wick are very much prone to a well-placed gunshot, which can put either down despite any difference the two have in stats, so that will be determined by pure ability, which will be covered later on. But ultimately, although the two are relatively even in speed, in a good ol’ fashioned fistfight between the two, Bond’s superior physical strength should be enough to beat the living daylights out of Wick and finish him off with a fatal gunshot if need be.
Equipment
This is a very interesting point of debate with this battle. Both John Wick and James Bond are armed to the teeth in deadly weapons, and have mastery with just about every firearm you can think of, and are certainly no slouches in the department of close ranged weaponry either. As well, both are suited for success, wearing very covert three pieces that can help protect them from quite a bit of punishment from the other side. In particular, Wick's bulletproof jacket allows him to not have to stress too much when facing off against Bond in a pure gunfight, while James' protective jacket can do a lot of the same, and his Nanosuit gives him a stealth edge that John has a hard time matching outside of his own expertise in the field.
When looking at purely the guns and close range weapons they have on hand, both seem fairly evenly matched in this area, with having very similar loadouts, however, one thing to note in particular is how Bond in particular approaches a situation like this. Not only is he very experienced in disarming opponents and taking their weapons for himself, it is also a strategy that Wick cannot reliably replicate, as several of Bond's weapons are specially manufactured by Q to only be wielded by him, such as his Walther PPK/S or his Signature Rifle. When up close, Wick surprisingly seems to have more options at first glance, and a greater comfort in close ranged and armed combat with an affinity for knives, bludgeoning weapons and (of course) pencils. While Bond is no slouch with a melee weapon, it is much more of a field that Wick is versed in by comparison.
But of course, that's only part of the story, the real big factor here is the many gadgets and unique tools James Bond has at his disposal from his missions over the decade, which is where the gap starts to widen a bit further. While John Wick is one of the deadliest killers of his world and someone who has fought a countless number of people from different backgrounds, loadouts and fighting styles, simply put he has never met anyone with quite the bag of goods Bond has at his disposal. Bond has a trick up his sleeve for just about any situation that Wick can put him in; he has many explosives and tricks such as his Shooting Cigarette, Laser Polaroid Camera or Wrist-Mounted Dart Gun for ranged combat, a multitude of wristwatches with hidden weapons or things such as his Glass-Shattering Ring, his Key Finder or Pocket Snap Trap to help him gain an edge in close quarters combat, and if not, gadgets such as his Grappling Hook or Bell Rocket Belt to help him gain some distance from Wick in ways that Baba Yaga can't really replicate himself.
With so many tools on hand for any number of situations, it's only a matter of time before Bond's endless creativity and frankly absurd number of gadgets start to overwhelm even the likes of John Wick, who - while having an impressive arsenal in his own right - mainly only carries things that Bond has by and large seen in the past. He also has set ammo counts for his firearms, all of which could be used against him if James can get his hands on them, something John cannot always do with Bond's own guns. While Wick's bulletproof suit is very impressive and can take shots from just about any firearm, Bond has answers to that as well. A few of his weapons are armor piercing, such as his Wrist-Mounted Dart Gun or Walther WA 2000. To say nothing of his many explosives or even the aforementioned Dart Gun's other cyanide-tipped darts.
In terms of their vehicles, while Wick has quite the impressive car, it is still mostly a normal car by all means, whilst the many vehicles Bond has utilized over the decades have so many mounted weapons, stealth applications, armors and explosives that it's really no contest in that regard.
In most fights, John Wick's loadout and mastery with so many weapons, orthodox or not, would easily be able to win him the day against most any opponent, but against Bond's massively expansive set of weapons, unpredictable gadgets, and a tool for just about any combat scenario he might find himself in, Wick will find himself constantly on the back foot until he is out of options, while Bond will still likely be with more than half of his own options on-hand still.
Even John Wick's greatest weapon, the legendary fuckin' pencil, falls flat against James Bond's own explosive pen when it all comes down to it. The pen truly is mightier.
John Wick is certainly an impressive master of all weapons and arts of killing, and he certainly could get a lucky shot in and hold his own better than you may think on paper. But in the end, he can't stack up against 007's truly unmatched loadout and near impossible to overwhelm trickery.
Abilities
As these two combatants aren’t very drastic and are fairly grounded, there won’t be any supernatural abilities the two can pull out and use as a win-con. But abilities such as their fighting styles and extra quirks are what make the Assassin v Spy showdown a truly interesting one.
Both Bond and Wick utilize similar fighting styles in terms of Jujutsu, Judo and Krav Maga, so neither can utilize such to gain an advantage as both know the fighting styles inside and out. For Bond, his most important abilities would be his expertise in British close quarters combat, taught to all Great British soldiers and marines. It focuses on grappling and disarming, whilst redirecting enemy weapons onto the wielder and using precise locks. And if you want to be the greatest spy, you need to be stealthy, which is why Bond also employs ninjutsu, centered around… well, stealth and deception, tricking an opponent with feints and tripping sweeps, leaving them open to a Skyfall. James Bond really has No Time to Die, still not even crossing Goshinkwai, a fighting style all about dirty tactics, such as ankle breaks, discombobulating, vision blocking and even biting. There’s also Eskrima, which is perfect for multi-angled defense on close ranged weapons i.e knives, staffs, swords, pencils, etc.
This rounding off his very strange and varied gnarly sense of martial arts, speaking of sense. Over his years in MI6 and being 007, James has unlocked an ability called Bond Sense, a state of mind where Bond’s perception of time slows down, allowing him to switch weapons and draw and aim his gun in said time. Overall, a solid list of abilities, but let’s see if his breathtaking adversary can keep up.
If you had to choose what makes John Wick so special, it’s his creative hybrid fighting style, ‘Gun-Fu’, the love child of Japanese jiu-jitsu, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, tactical 3-gun, and standing Judo. Perfect to match the fighting style used and mastered by none other than Bruce Lee, Jeet Kune Do, with its minimal effort maximum power ordeal. A lot of Wick’s own fighting styles use his surroundings to fend off his enemies, and rely on being able to swap between defense and offense. Lest we forget he also uses Aikido to back this up, joint-locking your average pesky assassins. This isn’t too great in a street fight, but against someone like Bond, this ain’t no street fight. This relies on Wick to not really harm someone, but he uses it in a way to bring and disarm a person, similar to British close quarters combat.
So who really has the advantage? Well, both sides have fighting styles which replicate one another or enough of a relevance to work into a counter. But Bond already has the advantage with his Bond Sense, along with a more set variety of fighting styles which counter a lot of the hybrid styles Wick uses. Ninjutsu forces Wick to be on a high alert and always on the back track, which would ruin a lot of his chances to utilize his best fighting martial arts. Although, Wick has fought opponents utilizing ninjutsu before but struggled quite a bit, however, this still does give him experience to the techniques as seen later with his fight with Zero. Bond counters a lot of Wick’s by already using Jeet Kune Do and their shared martial arts, neither hold that edge over the other. Wick wouldn’t be able to predict Bond’s movements to use his force against Agent 007. If you had any doubts on Bond’s Goldeneye to the ways of the fist, now would be a good time to Jeet Kune Do yourself the favor and go on his side, as Bond has this category in the bag.
Tertiary Factors
Experience is a bit of an odd one to tackle. Both Bond and Wick have been trained to kill since their early days, but given Wick specifically coming from nothing and being raised around a crime syndicate, it’s probable his training started younger. Wick’s actual age has not been specified, but it’s unlikely he’s meant to be the same age as his actor, a man in his 50s (yesterday was his 58th birthday woohoo). Screenwriter Derek Kolstad has quoted Keanu Reeves as wanting to play Wick as a 35-year-old man. While this isn’t a direct confirmation, it shows he’s designed to be an older, but still fairly virile man, rather than a middle-aged menace. Factoring in his 5 or so years of retirement, Wick likely has 2 decades and some change of combat experience under his belt.
Ian Fleming’s original intentions for Bond were for a man in his mid-to-late thirties, which would match up quite nicely with Wick. It is stated in the Moonraker novel that he is eight years shy of the mandatory 00 retirement age of 45, placing him at 37. The later Craig movies, however, take place well beyond that mandatory retirement age, as the 38 year old agent proceeds to stay in action for over a decade in-universe. In addition to his military training, Bond solidly has more years on the field, regardless of how different his childhood was. Also, he just has dozens of times more media than Wick, giving him far more adventures over the years.
Conclusion
In conclusion, while they may seem like a close fight on the surface due to the human nature of both combatants, James Bond edges out John Wick considerably. Less due to stats (though Bond does have the edge in durability due to tanking attacks from Jaws, who has destroyed steel beams, and speed due to reacting to missile fire) and more due to arsenal and experience. While Wick can certainly give Bond a hard time in close-range-combat, Bond would still be comparable to him and has a much wider arsenal that could be used to take Wick off guard before landing the fatal blow. It should be reiterated that Bond has fought off assassins comparable to John Wick, whilst Wick has never fought someone like Bond and his arsenal. In this fight, while Wick is certainly a skilled fighter and killer, nobody does it better than James Bond.

Holy shit! Wasn't expecting a unanimous decsion in Bond's favour. I was still expecting Bond to win, but thought it would be closer.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of those interesting scenarios where it's a close contest, but not really a debatable one. Of course Bond isn't bulletproof, but he has far more working in his favor to land that killing shot before Wick does.

Given Bond just has so much more material to work with, this outcome was probably a given. Would've preferred Wick to fight The Bride (Kill Bill), but even if he loses to Bond, the fight itself should still be lit, so there's that to look forward to. Great analysis, all around.
ReplyDeleteGiven how much greater James Bond's Arsenal and Experience is overall compared to John Wick, I'm not really surprised about this outcome. This is one of those matchups where the victor is pretty obvious and straightforward, yet not so easy.
