Death Battle Predictions: Luz VS Anne

“Home isn't a place. Home is the people who love you most, the people who will always love you, forever and ever, no matter what.” -Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Luz Noceda, Realm-Traveling Human Witch Resident of The Owl House

Anne Boonchuy, World-Hopping Normal Girl from Another World of Amphibia

As we grow older and begin to accept the responsibilities of what is anticipated of us as an adult, it is always an important lesson to stay in touch with what makes us “us” and surround ourselves with the people who bring out our full potential. But in the case of these two Disney Channel protagonists, they learned these lessons by being isekai’d into entirely new lands, growing bonds with the people they encounter, and eventually becoming the hero of both their world and their adoptive new world. Yknow, just your average tuesday.

However, when pitted against one another, which of these two teen girls from another world will come out on top? Will Luz Noceda prove to be too much of a titan for the hero of Amphibia, or will Anne Boonchuy bring a calamitous end to the witch of the Boiling Isles? Better stay tuned into this channel as we determine who will win in this DEATH BATTLE!

(By Advent_Chao)

Before We Start…

This blog will be going into the entirety of both shows. This includes the recently released Owl House series finale. Thus, it is important to emphasize that we will be going into heavy spoilers for both relatively new shows.

As for what we are using, we will be including both shows (duh), additional official games that have been released for both series, the small short series released at the beginning of both shows' runs (Owl Pellets for TOH and Teen Girl in Frog World for Amphibia) and Marcy’s Journal, an Amphibia guidebook that provides additional lore on events throughout the series.

Additionally, both have some specific abilities that are debatable on whether or not they are standard and fair to give to Luz and Anne. However, as said abilities are very important narratively, and we love awesome anime battles, they will be given these abilities anyways. In any case, further explanation about these forms will be given later on in the blog.

Background

Luz

"So you have a different way of doing things, a different way of seeing things. That might make you weird, but it also makes you awesome, don't you see? Because us weirdos have to stick together. And nobody should be punished for who they are!"

Most may say that it's always best to live your life to the fullest, but no matter what, nothing can stop the inevitable judgment of your peers from bringing you down and taking away what makes you special. Enter 14 year old high school student, Luz Noceda. While Luz was far from a disobedient child, her energetic and carefree nature made her come across as weird to those around her, much to the worry of her mother Camila, who had just recently lost her husband.

Hoping to straighten out her girl for the real world after an incident involving a book report with live snakes and fireworks, Camila planned to send Luz off to Reality Check Summer Camp to prepare her daughter for adulthood. Poor Luz, all she wanted to do is be like us nerds who edit anime clips to music and read fantasy books with convoluted backstories. Much to Luz’s surprise, right before she left, she would discover a doorway to an entirely new realm, the Demon Realm. There, she would meet a small little bundle of chaos named King, an eldritch Owl Worm thing named Hooty, and Eda the Owl Lady, the most wanted and powerful witch of the Boiling Isles. Soon after getting into a wacky adventure with King and Eda involving a fast food crown, Luz would decide to stay on the Boiling Isles and become the first human to be a witch. From there, Luz would find her new home at the titular Owl House.

At first, due to her lack of magic background, Luz struggled to perform even the most basic of magic spells but with enough patience and cleverness, Luz was soon able to practice a type of magic that had long since been forgotten on the Boiling Isles, Glyph magic. Eventually, Luz’s proficiency with magic would allow her to enroll in Hexside, a school that molds the teens of the Boiling Isles into witches that would join a coven that specializes in a specific type of magic. During her enrollment at Hexside, she would make life-long friends in the form of Willow and Gus, as well as her girlfriend, Amity Blight. However, the benefits of this new world also came with many downsides as due to Eda’s infamy, Luz would continuously be thrusted into conflicts that tested her magical prowess. This would include challenges against Eda’s sister Lillith, the Golden Guard named Hunter, and the tyrannical ruler of the Boiling Isles, Emperor Belos. Specifically, in one of those encounters, Luz had to make the difficult choice of seemingly destroying her way home in order to protect her realm from Belos’s wrath resulting in Luz beginning a new journey to discovering a way back to her own realm.

Unfortunately, on one of those adventures, Luz would actually learn about and meet another human who had traveled to the Demon Realm hundreds of years ago, Philip Wittebane. Trusting Philip in finding a way home, she would inadvertently discover Philip’s true nature as a Witch Hunter and help him gain access to an all-powerful yet childlike god, the Collector. Sooner rather than later, Luz would also discover that Philip was actually Emperor Belos all along. Therefore, Luz and her friends teamed up to put a stop to Belos who planned to use a spell taught to him by the Collector which would kill all the witches part of a coven on the Day of Unity.

Things would go unexpectedly to the surprise of everyone as the Collector would be freed from his prison and in a sacrifice, King would send Luz and her friends back to the Human Realm with no way to get back. This wouldn’t stop Luz though as eventually, with the help from her friends and mother, her new magical staff and palismen, and the power of the titan that the Boiling Isles resides on, Luz would find a way back to the Demon Realm, talk some sense into the Collector, and put Belos’s reign of terror to an end once and for all. Down the line, Luz would even enroll in the University of Wild Magic and go on her way to becoming a true witch. Her journey wasn’t always easy and she made many mistakes, but as Luz herself would say, “nada funcionará a menos que lo haga funcionar”. Translation? Nothing will work unless you make it work. Needless to say, she definitely did.

Anne

Change can be difficult, but it's how we grow. It can be the hardest thing to realize you can't hold on to something forever. Sometimes, you have to let it go; but, of the things you let go, you'd be surprised what makes its way back to you.”

Life was about as normal as it could be for a girl in middle school. For Anne Boonchuy, this meant helping her loving parents with their restaurant, surviving middle school drama, and hanging out with her two childhood best friends, Sasha and Marcy. However, on her thirteenth birthday, after being convinced by Sasha to skip class to hang out, Anne was coerced by both her and Marcy to steal a peculiar music box from a thrift store. This event would forever change the lives of Anne and her friends because, as soon as they opened it, the three girls were sucked into a new world: Amphibia. A world full of… Well, anthropomorphic amphibians and various other creatures.

After surviving on her own for a while, Anne would meet a young frog from Wartwood named Sprig, who was happy to meet her despite everyone else's concern of an unknown being arriving in their town. After fighting off a wild giant mantis, Anne would find her adoptive residence in Wartwood with Sprig’s family including his grandfather Hopediah AKA Hop Pop, and his little sister Polly, as a new-found family (We love the found family trope). From this small town, Anne would begin a long quest to find her friends as well as a way back home. A quest that would unveil several moments of self-discovery for Anne and everyone involved, uncover long-lost history of Amphibia, and ultimately, help determine the fate of both Amphibia and her own world. Eventually, after several adventures, and self-caused misadventures, throughout all of Amphibia, Anne would find her friends. But it would take more than a simple reunion for the trio to get back together.

Sasha, who had become rather manipulative in her friendship with Anne at some point in their life, had allied with the Toad Captain Grime, who saw the frogs as people beneath the toads, forcing Anne to stand up to her to save the Plantars and the frogs of Wartwood, leaving the two girls as enemies for a lengthy period. On the other hand, her meeting with Marcy, who had been living her best life in Newtopia and had quite an amicable partnership with the ruler of the Newts, King Andrias, did go much smoother, even allowing the trio to uncover truths of the Calamity Box, the music box that sent Anne and her friends to Amphibia. But later on, they also discovered two dark truths that revealed True Colors (gottem): one, that Marcy intended on the Calamity Box doing something like this in order to avoid the pain of being separated from her friends before her family could move away with her, and two, that King Andrias had been manipulating everyone to reacquire the Calamity Box to restart his ancestors' goal of conquering other worlds, starting with the human world. By the end of the incident, Anne and the Plantars were separated from Marcy and Sasha, being warped back to the human world.

After reuniting with her parents, getting caught up on stuff in her home world, and introducing the Plantars to the ways of the human world, as well as an encounter with the FBI, Anne eventually found a way back to Amphibia alongside the Plantars. There, she would reconcile with Sasha and the two, leading an army of frogs, toads, newts, and various other friends, spearheaded a rebellion against King Andrias and his brainwashed and robotic forces. Eventually, after reclaiming the Calamity Box, rescuing Marcy, and stopping King Andrias, the three girls would use the full power of the Calamity Gems in the Calamity Box to defeat the Core, a hive mind being who had been manipulating Andrias in its plans for multiversal conquest. However, the Core's defeat came at a heavy cost.

In order to put down the Core for good, Anne had to use all three Calamity Gems to do so, a feat which cost the young girl her life. Fortunately, the 3-Gem Guardian would grant her a second chance at life (Technically they made a backup of her, but that's a huge existential debacle way too big for a background segment.) after Anne refused to become the next Guardian due to her lack of current experience with big decisions, regardless of her big journey. Upon her return, after a heartfelt final farewell to the Plantars, Anne returned home alongside Sasha and Marcy. As a result of her journey, Anne had helped change Amphibia for the better, along with her friends, and herself. Before, she used to be a somewhat impulsive girl who usually took the easy way out of things, letting people walk all over her as a result, and she was not really sure what she wanted to do in life or who she was. However, this life-changing journey led to Anne understanding responsibility, bravery, and empathy for others, and finding and learning to love herself for who she truly is.

Experience & Skill

Luz

Experience With Magic

Although inexperienced and incapable of performing spells at the start, Luz later practiced every form of magic coven this side of Hexside. Furthermore, she temporarily used Eda’s Palisman and would later her own Palisman near the end of the series. It is also shown that after the timeskip, she and Stringbean are at least close to having understanding of every form of witchcraft. An impressive task, considering it contains the likes of:

.

There are also other miscellaneous spells such as petrification, sleep inducement and even body switching that she has encountered in her quest home.

Creative Thinking

Luz is very quick on her feet with discovering new ways to look at things, such as her using various different glyph combinations that nobody in the Isles had ever seen before like invisibility, safety hover, and more. While she may have been labeled weird in the human realm, her creative outlook on things make her perfectly suited to tackle the Demon Realm’s shenanigans.

Artistic Mastery

Across the various Owl Pellet shorts and the mainline series itself, Luz has been shown to be extremely proficient in the arts and especially drawing. She’s shown on many occasions that she can find creative ways to trace glyph symbols (with perfect circles courtesy of tracing some manga as a kid) and can draw with whatever she can get her hands on. She also seems to carry pencils/pens on her various adventures based on if she needs to create new glyphs on the fly.

Survivor of the Boiling Isles

An inhospitable land for those uncareful, the Vermont-sized Boiling Isles possesses an array of demons, monsters, cultists, unforgiving government-heads, boiling rain, and all those other moderately scary things you gotta watch out for in Florida. Guided by Eda, Luz has survived all these dangers and more, sometimes completely on her own. Over time, her skill and experience in Bonesborough has grown immensely, and has fully formed her into a true warrior for good, to the point of participating and even stopping the war against Emperor Belos and The Collector.

Stamina

While you wouldn’t initially expect it, this girl who originally had “weak nerd arms'' has built her body to burn a lot of energy, having traveled from Bonesborough to the Titan’s Knee (which is a distance spanning a significant portion of the Boiling Isles) in the span of a day, and having gone through the events from the episodes “Thanks to Them” to the climax of “Watching and Dreaming” with no sleep, which seems to have spanned an entire day. Also, she can induce training montages.

Anne

Swordsmanship

Anne is generally a skilled swordsman in the Amphibia series, she was capable of holding her own against Sasha in a sword fight, a person who actively trains her skills throughout the series when given opportunity, and was even capable of outmaneuvering Sasha and turning her cape against her after Anne was disarmed.

Through her mentorship with a skilled swords-newt named Tritonio, Anne improved her sword skills and became more creative with how she fights, an example being when Anne used her sword to reflect the sun's light onto Tritonio’s eyes to blind him, giving Anne the advantage, and victory. Anne also incorporated some of her swordplay into her Calamity Form, as she is able to summon the sword like Thor, and throw it with a spin, slicing apart any foe unfortunate enough to be in its way.

Muay Thai

Anne has shown to be quite adept at Muay Thai, a form of traditional Thai martial arts. It's referred as "The Art of Eight Limbs", as it uses eight points of contact (punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes), focusing on stand up striking alongside clinching techniques.

Anne's exact mastery is unknown, but it's at least enough so that she can actively teach without much issue. She first stumbled upon this martial art after her mom enrolled her in a class after realizing, in Anne's words, how "high-spirited" she was. As a side note, apparently Amphibia just has its version of Muay Thai that's the exact same for some reason.

Survivor of Amphibia

The Amphibian world is much more dangerous than our world, with most of its living organisms out to have you for dinner or worse, all on a continent about the size of Australia (fitting). Anne is a foreign survivor of this wild world, be it by her own ingenuity, strength, and compassion. But that can only get her so far, as a major reason for her survival is thanks to the Plantars and Wartwood. Though she did survive for a week or two prior to the beginning of the series by herself, so that is something to acknowledge.

It is worth noting, that as the show goes on, Anne eventually does learn the rules and trappings of Amphibia's ecosystem pretty well, going along with her change of attitude into a more mature and patient person.

To add on further to this, Anne also survived what was likely one of if not the most dangerous era in Amphibian history, involving a universe crossing war between the resistance of Amphibia’s people and the Core’s robotic army. She went on to win numerous battles and complete numerous successful missions, being one of the most vital players in the war.

Stamina

Despite admitting herself that she is not exactly in shape once or twice, Anne actually has a lot more endurance than you may suspect. She has been able to battle for long periods of time, and can sustain her glowing blue transformation for a noticeably long time, a transformation known for its effect on stamina. Additionally, she once stayed up for well over a day straight (it's implied that it probably was 2 or even 3 days which would be far more impressive), doing both research on multiverse theory as well as fighting a giant robot with no sign of severe exhaustion throughout that period, only little bits of snoozing here or there.

Equipment

Luz

Fireworks

A group of fireworks Luz planned to bring along for her book report’s Act 3 closer. She held onto them on her way to Summer Camp and found pretty good use for them in her first fight against Warden Wrath creating quite the nasty explosion.

Glyph Papers

Initially upon arriving in the Boiling Isles, Luz was incapable of performing magic due to lacking a bile sack which is an extra organ in all residents containing a free magic supply. However, after some interactions with nature thanks to her mentor Eda, she was able to spot patterns in her surroundings. Through copying those patterns onto paper, all it would take is a tap and voila, she could do magic by utilizing the natural magic located on the isles. The potency of this magic can be further increased as well depending on how big the glyph symbol itself actually is. Luz can also transcribe the glyphs she’s learned on papers on her person in order to use them, allowing to her to be able to draw more glyphs using her notepad and pen at any time. She carries these glyph papers in large quantities, and isn’t really shown to run out of them. Throughout her adventures, Luz has discovered the following glyphs:

Light Glyphs

The first glyph that Luz discovered after watching a video of Eda drawing a light spell on her glitched phone. When drawn, this glyph can create one or more small balls of light. Depending on the size of the drawn glyph, it can create a massive flash of light to blind enemies. Additionally, when using two light glyphs at once, Luz can fire a concentrated beam of light towards her enemies. This can also give her healing in Witch’s Apprentice. In the series finale, light glyphs are shown to be able to counter the Collector’s illusions and turn their puppets back to normal.

Ice Glyphs

The second glyph that Luz discovered while stuck in place on the snowy mountain top is the giant’s knee. When drawn, this glyph can create a pillar of ice that’s width and height is dependent on the size of the glyph drawn. Said release of ice can also vary in shape, for instance, there is one time where Luz could seemingly make a hull sized glacier. The glyph can also vary in ways such as creating snow or ice sculptures. Additionally, when attached to another object, the glyph will enhance whatever it is stuck to and grant the object icy properties.

Plant Glyphs

The third glyph that Luz discovered while studying the plantlife of the Boiling Isles. When drawn, this glyph causes plants to grow at a rapid rate to whatever direction the user wants. Specifically, Luz can use it to tangle and trap her opponents in vines or to swing around her immediate environment.

Fire Glyphs

The fourth and final of the main four glyphs that Luz discovered while playing in a Grudgby match with her friends. When drawn, this glyph creates a ball of fire that can vary based on how big the glyph is drawn, allowing for use as projectiles. Additionally, when attached to an object, the fire glyph will set the object it's stuck to on fire. The fire that is produced by these glyphs is pretty hot, being able to outright melt metal gates.

Glyph Combos

Glyphs can be combined and connected in different shapes or forms to create new magical effects. Lilith Clawthrone, magic expert and resident geek of the Clawthrone family, described it as these combinations serving as parallels to the chemical combinations inside a Witch's bile sack, allowing Luz to expand her magic arsenal to new levels, and much closer to the magical capabilities of her peers. Lilith & Eda even claimed that the right glyph combos could be used to create any kind of magic. (20:00) Disney's official website in their Owl House Facts/Trivia questionnaire mentions this again as well. If regular glyphs are a rare occurrence, glyph combos are even more so, taking a skilled magic user like Belos literal years to figure out on his own, albeit it’s implied Luz was being assisted by the Titan in her learning of glyph mechanics while the Titan worked against Belos.

Invisibility Glyphs

A glyph combo created by drawing a light glyph inside a ring with the outside containing another light glyph and two ice glyphs. This spell causes objects and people it’s activated on turn invisible but only lasts for as long as the user can hold her breath. However, Luz can hold hers for a fairly long time. Luz can also use it to conceal specific items.

Safety Hover Glyphs

A glyph combo created by placing a light glyph in the middle of a ring, and adding an ice glyph and fire glyph to the top right and bottom left of the ring. This spell causes objects and people it’s activated on to hover right above the ground before falling. The hover lasts a few seconds and can break falls from fairly high distances.

Mist Glyphs

A glyph combo created by putting an fire glyph and an ice glyph on the left and right of a ring respectively. Its activation creates a thick mist, and if sleep nettles are added to the spell, it gives the mist sleep inducing properties.

Water Glyphs

A glyph combo created by drawing out a fire glyph inside a spiral-like ring with 3 ice glyphs on the outside. This spell creates a small fountain of water. Looks pretty, but not really useful.

Wind Glyphs

A glyph combo created by drawing an ice glyph inside a ring with three fire glyphs on the inside and a light glyph on the outside. This spell creates a vortex of wind that can suck up objects near it.

Monster Arm Glyphs

A glyph combo created by drawing a plant glyph inside of a nearly complete ring with two fire glyphs inside another ring that has another plant glyph. This spell creates a monster arm that can attack anyone in its vicinity, though the fact that “anyone” includes Luz makes it a bit more difficult to capitalize on. These monster arms, when used by Emperor Belos, were capable of restraining Luz herself.

Teleportation Glyphs

A glyph combo created by a shitton of glyphs. When activated, it teleports anyone inside to the Titan’s head. Though considering the needed amount of prep time and the specific location for said teleportation it is probably not too practical for general use.

Petrification Glyphs

A glyph combo created by utilizing a connected line of three ice glyphs and two plant glyphs inside a ring. This spell quickly petrifies whatever is on top of it into stone. When used by Belos, this petrification is able to turn entire people to stone.

Cursed Pencil

A magic pencil that brings to life drawings made with it.

Toy Sword

A toy sword that Luz picked up for a false "chosen one quest" early in her time in the Boiling Isles. It is actually pretty good as a weapon, being able to slice through the tentacles of Adegast. All by the power of Skullgar (needs batteries for a voice box function).

Memory Tweezers

Tweezers that can extract images of memories from a person’s head when inserted into an ear. If damaged or destroyed, it can start a chain reaction that leads to the destruction of the target’s mind.

Witch’s Cloak

A cloak made from Witch’s Wool that was gifted to Luz by Eda, she proceeded to wear it from the events of Young Blood Old Souls to Yesterday's Lie. This protects Luz from all manner of magical attacks, but it was eventually damaged by the environment in the Space In Between. While Eda meant to repair it, they just never got around to it.

Winged Shoes

With these winged shoes, Luz can essentially double jump.

Plant Ladder Seeds

When set into the ground, Luz can grow plant platforms to reach tall places.

Snaggleback Shell

Luz has a Snaggleback Shell that can bash through stacked enemies with ease and be used as a shield.

Cloud Jar

When opened, the jar creates a cloud platform for Luz to stand on.

Ice Potion

The Ice Potion, when thrown, can freeze a horde of enemies solid and dissipate them.

Relics

In the game Witch’s Apprentice, Luz can acquire relics depicting various items seen through season 1 of the show. Some of these (the Toy Sword, Memory Tweezers, and Witch’s Cloak) are already covered above, but the remaining ones include:

Anne

Backpack

Anne's trusty backpack, the home of a lot of the items Anne used during the first two seasons of the show. Headphones, magazines, even entire wardrobes worth of outfits! Though with all that stuff inside it, it could definitely be a good bludgeoning tool if needed.

Tennis Racket

Throughout a good number of her days in Amphibia, Anne used her trademark pink tennis racket as her go-to weapon to fight off her opposition. It does not really have any unique qualities (Get ready for a trend), but the ability to both whack someone on the head and knock back minor projectiles is useful nonetheless..

Bath Bomb

A bath bomb Anne held onto on her backpack before she was transported to Amphibia. It may not look like much, but it makes for a decent grenade. A very, VERY soapy grenade.

The Calamity Box

A magic box made ages ago by Newtopia’s intellectual leaders for the sake of traveling to and conquering different universes. What dimension the box goes to is dependent on how much the lever is turned. This is due to the ancients of Amphibia discovering that certain musical patterns seem to dictate the path of travel between universes. One aspect of the box worth noting is the amount of  power needed to fuel universe travel is incredibly massive. One time, when Anne and the gang tried opening a portal to Amphibia, it was stated that nothing would be able to extend the portal size to the point where the gang would fit through, reiterated again in Marcy’s Journal. Luckily, the Calamity Box has an excellent power source in the form of the…

Calamity Gems

The Calamity Gems are ancient stones that wield absurd power, created ten thousand years ago by the 3-Gem Guardian. For an example of said power, Anne used a portion of one of them upon going into her Super form (more details later) to power a device to open a large portal between universes. The gems were also able to give Leif, an ancestor of Sprig, visions of the future centuries ahead of her when she touched them.

The gems are not just normal super batteries though, they are incredibly special for a reason. In ancient texts they have also been stated to help crops grow and to heal wounds. Additionally, when Anne and the gang were transported into Amphibia, the gems’ power laid within them. Anne would not be able to tap into this power for a good while, but we will get into that later.

Phone

Anne’s trusty cellphone, complete with everything a phone comes with in late 2019. Besides serving as a flashlight for flashing someone in the eye, it does not really provide much in combat. But when it comes packed with all the seasons of Suspicion Island, why would it need to be useful for throwing hands? Also interestingly, it can hold a 10,000% battery charge. Also it can totally steal souls, for real.

Toad Swords

Plain swords Anne obtained from various toads.

The first of them Anne stole from a Toad Guard during her first confrontation with Sasha on Reunion, and went on to keep it during most of Season 2. Anne lost it in the episode True Colors, where she was disarmed as part of Sasha's coup. While obviously nothing special, it is worth noting Anne used it to completely deflect a petrification beam with no effect on the sword itself.

The second one is much shorter lived usage wise and was also, surprise surprise, stolen from a Toad Guard by a very furious Anne. She went on to defeat Sasha with it and also used it to slice up frobots (evil frog robots) like butter. Anne lost the sword in that very same episode however. Both swords are pretty standard and look a bit damaged, but in Anne's hands they can still be deadly.

Tritonio’s Family Sword

After Anne went through tough training with Tritonio, she was given his family sword. There is not really anything particularly special about it aside from it glowing blue, but it is definitely more efficient than her Toad swords, represented by how Anne took it over her other sword options into the final battle in Los Angeles.

Chestplate

Before heading off to the third and final temple to power the gems, Marcy wanted Anne to update her look, after all, it was a bit awkward how she had just worn the same school uniform for every adventure up to that point. However, nothing really seemed to work for Anne. That was until, after a small tumble, she was left wearing a chestplate that suited her perfectly. It itself does not actually have any special traits, but it does provide some additional protection, which is appreciated.

Beetle Jerky

Anne’s favorite food in Wartwood, it can also heal her from damage in Locust Pocus.

Scythe

A big ol' monster mantis's arm strapped to a large stick making a makeshift scythe, it's sharpness perfect to reap what you sow. To be frank however, it doesn't seem like Anne knows how to handle it the best.

Toy Lightsaber

A light-up toy from a local SpendCo store that Anne's dad purchased before giving it to her. While it is a pretty silly weapon to use in concept, it makes for really good play fights. With it Anne was able to easily wipe out an entire group of FBI agents armed with shock batons with it, Darth Vader in Rogue One style. Fun fact, Anne does not like the Prequels.

Flamethrower

A fire-breathing bug Anne got her hands on during the Halloween special, she can use it as a flamethrower.

Abilities

Luz

None. She’s a normal human, what did you expect? Refer to the Support section for her Palisman.

Anne

Plantar Family Hunting Dance

The Plantar Family Hunting Dance is a traditional, ritualistic dance invented by Leif and has been used by her descendants since then. This dance mesmerizes any creature that watches, putting them into a hypnotic state that makes them obedient to the performer. The Plantar family have used this dance to distract the prey and lure them in. Strangely enough, when first showcased by Leif, the dance seemed to have an effect on even more sophisticated and intelligent people in the form of Barrel the toad, so it is possible that its application could extend beyond random animals.

Mfw you get mind haxed by a random girl doing goofy ahh dances.

Transformations

Luz

Titan Luz (also known as “Luzan”)

During the final battle with Belos, Luz was tragically killed as a result of protecting the Collector from one of Belos' attacks. However, it was not the end for her, as when she arrived in The Space In Between, she was saved from falling into the afterlife by a particular being, the Titan himself (otherwise known as Papa Titan). We will cover him later, but long story short, by granting the last of his lifeforce to Luz, Luz was not only brought back to life, but also rocking a brand new form of a human-Titan hybrid. (But unfortunately still not good one-liners)

Against Belos, Luz found herself having everything she needed to fully put an end to the genocidal Witch Hunter. Her magic power is massively amplified, allowing her to naturally draw spell circles without having to use a glyph like her mentor Eda, either with her finger or with Stringbean's staff form, creating incredibly powerful spells. An example would be her creating new vegetation in the Isles from Belos’ goopy destruction, or her possibly creating boiling rain storms against any pesky remains of Belos (she also appeared to be ineffective by the rain). She can also create a magic barrier which she can fly in at incredible speeds and teleport with

On top of that, she can also let out a powerful Titan shout too, much like her friend King, and can enhance her physical strength by summoning glyphs around her body. The time Luz has in this form is limited due to being derived from the Titan's lifeforce which at the time was severely depleted by Belos. The form also powers down over time as she uses it. However, when the form does run out, it also means Papa Titan's life has run out, so once Luz returns to normal, she won't be able to use her glyphs for magic anymore.

Anne

Super Anne

Anne, Sasha, and Marcy represent the three figures of Olm prophecy. This prophecy tells of three chosen warriors mystically connected to the Calamity Gems, who would come in a time of crisis to save Amphibia from itself. Anne is connected to the blue Calamity Gem, representing heart, and can use this connection to achieve amazing powers. As early as episode 1, she could unknowingly tap into part of this power to enhance her strength and allow her to save her friends. The three girls would later use their connections to recharge their respective Calamity Gems, but unlike Sasha and Marcy, Anne was interrupted before she could fully recharge the blue gem, leaving her still partially connected to it.

This power would manifest in a devastating fashion later on when Anne saw Sprig seemingly killed by King Andrias. The emotions and rage Anne felt activated the remaining connection between her and the blue Calamity Gem, causing her to transform, hair glowing blue, into a new state. This form, semi-officially dubbed Super Anne, grants Anne massively enhanced physicality, alongside high-speed flight and being fast enough to dash around faster-than-eyesight and see her enemies in slow motion

With her super form, her hits can create large shockwaves which can flip over cars. They also produce a lightning-like energy which can damage the surroundings. She can also coat objects in blue energy to enhance said object’s strength and fling it around with telekinesis as well as  project area-of-effect energy blasts at will

Anne used this form to tear through Andrias and his Frobots with ease, almost defeating him outright, but fainting before she could deal the finishing blow. Turns out, the power of the gems places a large strain on the human body, and Anne can only stay transformed for so long before burning out, think Kaioken. Despite this, Anne grew accustomed to her powers over-time, learning how to activate them and transform at will which allows her to become used to the strain it put on her body, thus allowing her to keep it up for longer and longer stretches of time. By the end of the series, she was capable of maintaining the form for an extended fight with Andrias without too much strain. She can briefly regain the state even after exhaustion through the support of her loved ones (and K-Pop), and is able to manually recharge it to some extent.

Anne can also tap into her powers partially without fully transforming. She lacks the glowing hair, but she’s still strong enough to kick a Frobot into the sky and recharge a portal between dimensions, alongside being able to produce shockwaves and slice held objects. Of note is that Sasha and Marcy also displayed the ability to unknowingly tap into their connection with their respective Calamity Gems prior to recharging the gems, granting them enhanced physicality as well.

Super Anne (Full Gem Powers)

In order to combat the Core after it had taken control of the entire moon, Anne and the gang needed a power boost. They received this in the form of Anne, Sasha, and Marcy using the power of each of their respective gems, resulting in them each gaining shiny and armored new Calamity forms, Anne’s shown above, as the stones give a greater power-boost when used in-tandem (classic synergy buff).

This form is massively above Anne’s previous super form in terms of strength and speed. Along with enhancing all of her previous gem related powers (her telekinesis goes from flinging her sword around to being able to send Sasha and Marcy from the middle of space to the Earth in seconds as well as creating a forcefield around them), it can fly into and survive the vacuum of space. But more notably, Anne can create giant energy constructs in this form. She was able to make a ginormous blue tennis racket that can fling around a massive cat ball, which exploded on impact with enemies. She likely can do more as well, as Sasha with the powers could make large wings to enhance her flight speed and giant pom-pom balls around her hands that acted like boxing gloves as well as being able to create phoenix shaped explosions. Marcy was also able to make a DnD styled die, which could bounce between enemies and eventually create another massive explosion.

While the form should still have a stamina issue similar to her previous one, as Sasha and Marcy were shown to begin fading after roughly 5 minutes, it is clear Anne is much better at handling it compared to them thanks to her body already being accustomed to the Calamity Gem’s power, which creator Matt Braly suggests could possibly be improved if she had time to get used to it. She was shown to be able to hold the form without any sign of fatigue whatsoever for roughly five minutes, with us only not seeing more as she had to utilize a stronger form to finish the job.

Super Anne (White Form)

(render made by pitch297 on DeviantART)

By calling upon the combined power of all three gems at once, Anne is able to achieve a glowing white form of ridiculous strength. With a simple all out blast, she was able to annihilate the Core, and obliterate the moon it was controlling in the process. However, power comes at a cost as  usage of all three gems at once is extremely taxing on the human body. After the form exerts all its energy, Anne will crumble to dust and die. Furthermore, the gems will shatter as a result of using all of their power, so if Anne doesn't kill her target in time, she'll either die or be left powerless (but most likely die).

Luz

Stringbean

A mythical snake shifter, Stringbean is Luz’s Palisman hatched from her egg after Luz had bonded with her from realizing what she wanted most. As a Palisman, Stringbean acts as Luz’s companion mounted on her staff, which is capable of flight by riding it like a witch’s broomstick. Luz is capable of summoning her and the staff at any time. Stringbean is powerful enough to unleash powerful blasts of magic that can casually blow apart stone

Being a snake shifter, she is also able to shapeshift into a variety of different animals, such as a dragon, snake, bat, and scorpion. Palisman contain their own source of magical power just like a Witch's bilesack that operates as a witch's familiar, in other words Stringbean is the channel to Luz’s magical potential.

Papa Titan

During Luz's attempts to travel to the Human Realm from the Demon Realm, there was a peculiar being that could be seen in the Space In Between, the world in-between worlds, who sometimes spoke to her. However, it was not until her untimely death to Belos that she finally met the figure when he saved her from falling into the afterlife. This being, the “Papa Titan” as he is called in Walking and Dreaming’s credits, is the Titan corpse that the Boiling Isles were made on, and King's father, having kept his consciousness and having watched over King as he grew up. In order to defeat Belos, Papa Titan gave Luz the last of his life in order to bring her back to life, and also give her the power she needs to do the deed as well.

Logically, this means upon death, Luz can get a free revive alongside her newly gained Titan powers. Though it is worth noting that her receiving her powers from the Papa Titan does end up ending his life, meaning that revive is a one time backup only.

Also, he's pretty casually dripped out too. I mean, just look at those glyph pajamas. (We don't know why he has a mini-Hooty sticking out of his eye socket though…)

Anne

Domino 2

An alpha female Coastal kill-a-moth Anne took under her care when she was just a kill-a-pillar. Her cat-like looks initially gave Anne comfort over her homesickness over her similar looking feline. Domino 2, however, proved to be far more than the Plantars bargained for as, once she grew, her appetite for Amphibians reached an all time high. Anne then was forced to let her go for the time being, until being reunited months later during the warring times against Andrias and the Core when Anne and Sprig set out to save her and her pack from being used as labor to power Andrias' machines.

Despite the Rebellion's initial protests, the kill-a-moth showed to have changed from her first impression and has much better judgment, even remembering Anne and a small toy she kept from her. Domino 2 was Anne's air support during the final set of episodes, and has shown to be quite useful for quick aerial maneuvering alongside her ex-owner. Her sharp teeth, claws and mighty roar also make her prime material for leader of her pack.

3-Gem Guardian

Upon her death due to full usage of the Calamity Gems, Anne awoke in a strange realm. In it, she would meet the 3-Gem Guardian, the protector of the entire multiverse and creator of the Calamity Gems, who just so happened to look like her cat Domino at the time. Following some discussion, the Guardian would return Anne to the living world so that she could live a life well lived so she could become a better guardian later, also giving one-time use shards of the Calamity Gems to allow her to return home with Marcy and Sasha. It’s implied the Guardian had been watching Anne and was communicating with her in her dreams.

The interaction with the Guardian is important because of the circumstance. The Guardian could make a direct copy of Anne’s being just before she died and send it back to the normal world, meaning Anne could get at least a one time revive upon dying. This is in-addition to the Guardian being able to see the future. More specifications about this revival process will come later, in the blog.

By the way, don’t be fooled by his appearance, he has said himself that his true form would blow humans’ minds, as Anne almost found out the hard way. (HP Lovecraft looking cat…)

Weaknesses

Luz

Died… BUT SURVIVED!

Luz used to be a little bit impulsive, at least at the start of the series. Her headstrong personality has caused her to get into trouble for her and her peers. She also has a bad habit of rushing into problems without thinking it through, which includes going against Eda’s rules. This typically results in her only making strategies once things have already gone for the worst and she is in a tight spot.

Also in terms of powers, Luz seems to only be able to use her glyphs in the Boiling Isles and was unable to use them elsewhere (Outside of a certain area in the human realm which used to have a vial of Titan Blood in it), due to the lack of Titan blood/magic around. This also connects to her Titan form, which uses up all Titan magic in the Boiling Isles. So not only does it have a time limit, once it runs out, Luz will be unable to use glyphs at all, which is pretty detrimental considering they're her main fighting style outside of Titan Luz.

Anne

Died… BUT ALSO SURVIVED!

Anne is not much of a strategist, typically jumping into battle with a simple three step plan: get in close, do not get hit, and hit. She has proven to be able to adapt on the fly and be tactical with her surroundings of course, but still, definitely not a fighting genius. When it comes to her higher transformations, while she did get better at maintaining them over time, they do still pack a stamina issue, eventually resulting in her being depowered and drained when she reverts to her base state. Lastly, as previously mentioned, using the power of all three gems at once will result in her death.

Before the Verdicts

Aren’t their higher transformations non-standard?

We addressed at the beginning of the blog that both would be given arguably non-standard abilities and gave reasons as to why. But, it does feel appropriate to further elaborate as to why they are receiving these special powers.

Luz

Luz’s ability being given that can be questioned over validity would be her Titan form. This is understandable, given the hoops she went through to actually get the form.

  1. Again, died, and ended up in the Space Between.

  2. Papa Titan saved Luz from falling deeper into some water which he stated would have actually made her count as dead.

  3. Papa Titan gave Luz the rest of his life force.

  4. Papa Titan sent Luz back to the living world.

Again, a lot of steps. It is undeniable that she does need outside help to actually achieve the transformation. Thus technically speaking, it and her free one time revive are non-standard.

But, also technically speaking, the events that led to her getting the form are not really too out there. Think about it. If she dies, she is going to end up in the Space Between. Papa Titan will be waiting there, and if she did (or does) die to Anne, Anne is going to be regarded as a force Luz cannot really combat normally. Thus Papa Titan would see it appropriate to give Luz the needed power to fight her blue opposition.

So while the power up is technically non-standard, it is not a power up that Luz would be unable to get realistically speaking in a scenario like this.

Anne

Anne’s situation is far easier to explain. Her first transformation, “Super Anne”, is one she had for the ending of Season 2 and all of Season 3 up until the finale. The only reason she did not get to keep it was due to all of the Gems’ energy having to be expended for the defeat of the Core.

For the white version, Anne just needs all three Gems. Which she had with the music box for the majority of the series, and she and the main gang would have kept said Gems, had the Gems not needed to be expended to finally defeat the Core. As for actually accessing the form, she just needs to ask the Gems for their power. So like the normal blue Super form, it should just be regularly standard. It also follows previous precedent where characters received super forms even when the circumstances are not quite standard because it represented the "peak" of their character (such as the hedgehogs Super forms, Ryuko Matoi, or Thanos with the IG)

The only form that can actually be called into question on whether or not it should be standard is the armored version of Super Anne that used all of the blue Gem’s power. This is due to the ritual needed to divert the Gem’s full power into Anne so she would have more than just a portion of the power, and due to a specific statement from Marcy:

This statement implies that for Anne to access the form, the other gems have to be powering others at the same time. The gems being stronger when used together is not inconsistent either, as it explains why Anne’s white form was so massively above the Core, which Anne, Sasha, and Marcy each with all of their respective gems’ power could not defeat.

However, it is worth noting that Anne still remained in the armored form after Sasha and Marcy depowered, meaning Anne should be able to access the synchro-boost from the gems on her own so long as she has all three, which, as said above, should be considered standard for her for this match. It is possible that, had the girls defeated the Core, she would have been able to keep the enhanced form and train it over time, though that is more guesswork. But regardless, all three gems being used at once is definitely less of a hoop to jump through than Luz’s four step Titan method. So it is only fair to give Anne the enhanced form anyways.

Summary

There are reasons to question why both are being given the powers they are. However when considering circumstance and narrative importance, it is fair to give them these powers. At least as long as the other is also getting special non-standard powers.

Also it would be cool lmao.

Collector Scaling

Over the past few weeks, the possibility of Luz scaling to the Collector has definitely been put into question. There is not really an exact moment in the series where the Collector is directly fought by anyone, so direct scaling is not really obvious at first. The picture gets muddier when bringing up the fact that Titan magic specifically nullifies Archivist magic (stated by Lilith, Collector, and shown off by Amity with a light glyph, notable since glyphs use Titan magic), and the fact that the main reason Belos’ Titan form was able to threaten the Collector was due to his moss’ life destroying properties. However, it is the Collector himself who clears things up.

The Collector puts emphasis on the power of full-grown Titans, stating they are more powerful than anyone. Considering he said “anyone” rather than just something like “most people”, this statement would logically include himself. Thus it would be fair to scale Titan Luz to the Collector’s power. She gains the power of King’s father, who is a full grown Titan, which puts Luz relative or above the Collector’s feat of moving the moon (which was a casual feat).

Though, key word, Titan Luz. It is consistently shown that the Collector is massively above base tier characters. Whether it be in the Season 2 finale where he one shots Belos, or with how easily he is able to take over the Boiling Isles. Sure, there was one time Stringbean could hurt him by poking his tongue, but it was more of a mild pain, the Collector was off guard, and it was meant to be more of a comedic moment. The scene is also very contradictory compared to the Collector’s other performances against characters like Belos in Season 2, so it might as well just be ignored out right. So essentially, base form Luz gets no special Collector scaling, Titan Luz does.

What is the stance on light glyphs and Frobot lasers? Are they light speed?

You probably noticed the mention of multiple relativistic and faster than light feats brought up for both characters previously in the blog. Typically stemming from light glyphs for The Owl House and Frobot lasers for Amphibia. These different things being relativistic or light speed can seem a bit odd, so we deemed it best to discuss their legitimacy in detail.

Light Glyphs’ Speed

Across the series, light glyphs show numerous aspects of real light. They cast shadows behind Luz and Eda when activated, illuminate the dark, and according to Luz’s notes, the glyphs themselves have power, reflection and color to them.

A big point of glyphs and magic as a whole is also nature itself. Magic with ice, fire, and of course, light, specifically draws from nature itself. This logic is consistent with how glyphs are found and with how they work. So, at an initial glance, light glyphs should be light speed right? Seems simple enough. The glyph releases both a flash of light and a blast.

The issue is most of the tandem speed feats specifically involve avoiding blasts. This is problematic considering that even though the blasts are made of light, there is no actual way to prove they move at the speed of light. In fact, it is easier to prove the opposite, as the light produced by the blasts typically reaches its targets before the blast does itself. These blasts are also depicted having force, an infamous light-speed contradicting property.

This is consistent with the very first bits of light magic Luz shows off, in the form of the tiny orbs she makes. Obviously, said orbs are light magic and produce light, but they do not actually move at light speed. So while light glyphs do use natural light, the light blasts in the series that are actually reacted to cannot be proven to move at light speed themselves.

That said, the actual flash produced from the glyph has no contradictions. The flash is just a literal ray of light, which should be light speed. Given the flash has no shown force or changing speeds, the main focus for light speed feats in relation to Luz will be focusing on these.

Frobot laser speed

Throughout the series the energy shots shot out by Frobots have shown properties that can point to them being lasers. The shots move straight and have burned things on contact. But on the flip side of things, they have shown force (breaking some ground and breaking glass) and have shown not to reflect on substances lasers would like glass. One may argue however that statements by people who have worked on the show indicate that these lasers are meant to be like real lightspeed ones. For example, storyboards shared by Amphibia concept artist and lead character designer Joe Sparrow have referred to what the Frobots use to fire their attacks as “laser cannons”.

Additionally, during a post series Q&A, when being asked about the speed of the Frobot lasers, the creator of the show Matt Braly had this to say:

“These are the kind of questions that I was, I was sort of afraid of, because like, I’m not a physicist. You know what I mean? Like I, I don’t have some numbers like, for you guys.”

“It’s really about story needs, uh, from my point of view, you know what I mean?

“In reality, if it’s a laser, it would be like, almost immediate, you know what I mean? But that’s no fun.”

Essentially the argument here is that the narrative intent is for the blasts to be really fast, like real lasers, and that the only reason the blasts show contradictions is because the team for Amphibia have to prioritize story over making sure everything that occurs is scientifically accurate.

However, Braly never actually calls the lasers themselves “light speed”. Sure, he says they are fast, but his statement is not exactly specific. It alone is not enough. And as for the “laser cannon” storyboard, simply calling something a laser also is not really specific enough. Think about how many times someone in an anime called a cool beam that clearly did not match the scientific sedition of a laser, a laser.

Another argument would be the lasers shown off in Marcy’s Flipwart game at the 2nd temple. These beams seem to move straight and have no force (them causing Flipwart pieces to explode does not mean they do, Hop-Pop merely tapping one caused a huge explosion. It is more logical to say the lasers touching the pieces serves as a signal to explode, rather than a direct cause). In addition to this, Marcy’s journal calls them “real lasers''.

However, that alone is not enough. While Marcy is definitely a very analytical geek, she could simply be calling them “real lasers” like they are out of some anime or video game. Again, geek. Not to mention, just like the Frobot lasers, the Flipwart ones have various contradictions. Their shape varies as they are thicker at the front than they are at their back, the energy inside the beams seems to zigzag if you look closely enough, there are electrical effects when they hit the ground rather than traditional burning, etc.

To summarize, while there are statements outside of the series itself that could be used to argue the presence of various lasers in Amphibia being light speed, these statements are not specific enough to invalidate the numerous contradictions the beams show.

Can Titan Luz seal Anne?

Ok so, we know that the Collector was sealed in the in-between realm by King’s dad, and Luz received his power in her titan form, so that brings up the question, does Luz have that same power?

Well, let’s go over it quickly. First, we don’t really have context for how Papa Titan sealed Collector away beyond just ‘he did’, so it’s unknown whether he needed to prepare to do so specifically, or if it’s just a magic spell he’s capable of. Regardless, it’s unfortunately not really viable for Luz to use.

If it does require prep, Luz has no knowledge of what would even go into that, and if it is just a spell, Luz has never seen it be performed, so she would not have that experience to draw on. To further add on, it’s not known whether it’s an instant seal or a prolonged process that Anne could potentially escape from mid-cast. Finally, it’s not clear if it was a spell made purely to work on Collector and others of his kind, or if it would work on any lifeform.

Tl;dr, there’s too many ambiguous factors to really give it to Luz as a potential win condition.

Higher Scale Collector feats

In The Owl House, the Collector is the character wielding the highest calculable feat in the show, being the 8 Ronnaton Moon slide featured in King’s Tide. There are arguments for higher level feats that are worth addressing though.

Collector’s Backstory Presentation

During the finale the Collector gives context to Luz, King, and Eda regarding the events that led to the Titan sealing him. While he was going through with this explanation, he used symbols in the sky that bear resemblance to stars to essentially give a frame for the Archivists, the beings that supposingly makeup Collector’s species. Thus the argument is presented that the Collector could move multiple stars very casually all at once.

However, it is not that simple. By looking at the image more closely, you can tell that not all the symbols are actually stars. One of them near the top looks more like Saturn, another symbol up there like a crescent moon, and obviously, not all the stars actually look like real stars, some are star polygons. Thus not all the symbols are even actual star-like dots. To go further however, a mural seen elsewhere in the Collector’s Archive furthers the idea that all these symbols are not real stars.

In this picture, you can see some of the symbols that make their way into the actual backstory telling, while also being able to see tiny orange dots in the background that likely represent real stars.

Essentially, the symbols on the Archivists’ clothing are just part of their bodies that clearly aren’t of actual scale given the moon and planet symbols also on their bodies, and so cannot be deemed real stars, considering contradictions in the appearance of the symbols and to the actual stars shown in the Collector’s mural.

Collector’s Shooting Star for Luz’s Quinceannera

This one is pretty simple to explain. During Luz’s Quinceannera celebrating her 18th birthday, the Collector makes a large shooting star to celebrate the occasion. Thus some would argue that the scene is a solid star level feat.

However, it is important to note that shooting stars are not stars at all. They are more like meteorites, which aligns much better with the visuals of the feat. So you cannot really say the Collector moved a star here.

Collector’s Bedroom

This argument, unlike the previous two, does have merit to it. It is very clear that the stars in the background, based on their appearance, are completely legitimate stars, unlike the previous two arguments.

Additionally, the audio description for For the Future also calls the space a “galaxy-sized bedroom”, outright stating how big it is. So the space is clearly of cosmic size. The issue with using the existence of the bedroom as a feat as that we do not actually have any context on the bedroom itself. While the Collector does create the Archives the bedroom is connected to, we do not know if the Collector himself made it while he was at the Boiling Isles, or if it was some sort of already existing alternate dimension, or a pocket dimension of sorts. We quite literally have zero context, meaning the bedroom being used for stats is quite literally 50/50. However, as you will soon see explained, using the room’s existence as a feat or not does not actually have much importance, so we will leave the interpretation to you.

Fight Script

Some of the users on this blog had some extra time and wanted to cook up something special, so they wrote together a script for the match up’s potential fight. Feel free to read it before or after verdicts. We hope you enjoy it!

Verdicts

Team Luz

Stats

Regarding the debate with Base stats, Luz has a plethora of CB-MCB calcs throughout the series but with progression in her training & magic. Luz received no damage from the Titan Finger Shockwave that gets 969 megatons of TNT and is hitting the Island range thanks to the Lumity scream which gets 5.14 gigatons of TNT. Some prefer not to use this due to the scene itself appearing comedic but she has similar scaling without it. Luz potentially downscales from Titan Belos's casual feats which range from 344 gigatons of TNT - 68.27 teratons of TNT. There have been arguments that the fire blast gives no force and is purely for infection, however the scene itself suggests otherwise, as when Luz intercepts the fire blast, it visibly explodes colliding with Luz’s magic

Later on, Enraged King and Enraged Harpy Eda fight Titan Belos where Belos fires a blast on the bridge that hasn’t been infected on and there's no sign of the infection afterwards (31:25) suggesting that it has an “on and off'' switch. It would also mean Belos’s fire blast has calculable output as well and enraged King blocks another fire blast aimed for The Collector afterwards with his scream and the blast gets pushed back by the barrier (25:10). This would mean Luz can potentially get past Anne’s most notable scaling feat of one shotting Frobots the likes of which when damaged can still output over 112.8 gigatons of TNT by about 3-605x.

The above scaling is hypothetical, as we do acknowledge that Belos’s blast is more consistently depicted as forming “moss” bio-mass on what it hits. Without either this or the “island shake”, Anne would take base AP.

In terms of speed, taking the worst case scenario regarding both with the arguments made against Rela-FTL, Luz would be Mach 226 and Anne would be upscaling Mach 152. This means that Luz would have a less than a 0.67x speed edge, giving leeway for Luz's other edges making her beat Anne in this scenario.

Taking into account their transformations, it's very apparent Anne in her iconic Super state won't stand a chance against Titan Luz. Even if we scale her to the Cloakbot’s Self Destruct feat that could reach 18.44 teratons of TNT (taking that perspective shot of his location at face value), Titan Luz even without Collector scaling easily getting 540 exatons of TNT - 2.872 zettatons of TNT (dispersal feat). The Constellation scene (Papa Titan guiding Luz in season 1 with the light glyph) gets anywhere from 40.9 exatons of TNT - 557 zettatons of TNT. Upscaling Super Anne to the Core’s Travel Speed feat (that gets 18.3-21.5% c) also wouldn't change the outcome. Luz's Moss Dispersion feat getting 11.9-19.58% c means she would be roughly comparable enough to land the one shot hit in alongside her humongous AoE and Speed Rate that could reach anywhere from 86.3% c to the speed of light

Characters in ToH reacting to the attack speed of magic means Titan Luz herself would be scalable to this, taking it at face value. Scaling to The Collector's casual feats of pushing the Moon getting 8,000 yottatons of TNT and soaring the stars 2.12-8,159 c would also counter Calamity Anne pushing her share of the Core Moon feat alongside Sasha, Marcy and the damaged Frobots that gets 877 zettatons of TNT and Anne getting more layers of upscaling on The Core’s Travel Speed feat. The same logic applies to Anne’s White Form that gets 38.9 yottatons of TNT and her visible speed getting 43% c.

Arsenal & Abilities

As you would expect with the match, Luz is considerably more versatile with her arsenal and abilities via her several glyphs and glyph combos, including but not limited to her light, ice, plant, fire, invisibility, safety hover, monster arm, wind, mist, water, teleportation and petrification. The last of which would be incredibly effective against Anne, considering a popular scene people use to say she can negate petrification, is actually just her sword blocking a laser, something that wouldn’t particularly work with how the glyph would work compared to how the Chicka-Lisk used it.

Her invisibility, paired with her creative mindset, would also be incredibly useful as she could devise a plan to take down Anne or avoid her bigger attacks, both of which would be fairly easy given Luz has multiple invisibility glyphs and can hold her breath for around a minute give or take. But that wouldn’t be all that could be considered a part of Luz’s arsenal when considering the games, the ice potion of which completely freezes the opponent solid and dissipates them. Something else when considering the games however would also be the collectibles.

In The Owl House game Witch’s Apprentice the main goal of the levels is to go on various fetch quests and collect several items from the first season of the series that Luz would not normally be able to have access to. If given these however, Luz would have far more variety of ways to theoretically one shot Anne if given the chance, the notable ones would be the memory tweezers, which can remove memories from a person in the form of a picture and destroy their mind if it is destroyed, the green thumb gauntlet, which can create plant constructs as large as the biggest trees in the Isles, and the shrink spray bottle, which can shrink the target small enough to fit in the palm of Luz’s hand.

These would be very formidable against Anne, though given the fact she has never had direct access to these across the series and that they are only attained through optional side quests in a dubiously canon videogame, their applicability could be debated. Still, it just adds to Luz's argument and versatility.

Now with that out of the way, Luz’s arsenal and abilities should likely triumph over Anne overall. When comparing base to base, it really isn’t much of a competition. Anne would mainly use her sword for up close combat while Luz would play it safe and smart with her glyphs and flight. Things get much more interesting with base Luz vs Super Anne in the latter regard with them both being able to fly now, but Luz would still have much more variety to pull from with her glyphs even if Anne would have greater AOE with her Shockwaves. Full Power Super Anne however would make things much harder as base Luz with her glyphs would be put against Anne’s constructs. While Luz would have some trouble against that and its widespread effect, Titan Luz would definitely be able to manage. Without the need to pull out or make glyphs now, she can naturally use her magic to keep up with Anne.

White Anne is more or less a nonfactor in this regard as it acts as a single ability and then dies afterwards. It is also possible that Luz knows much more magic than we have seen on screen, as she has been taking every coven class at Hexside since she joined and, at the end of the series, she still continues this goal and according to her, has found a new way to do things with Stringbean. While this would not be very helpful to base Luz very much since she doesn’t know the glyphs for them, this would be very useful for Titan Luz’s variety of powers with her having all of Papa Titan’s magic. It is very subjective whether you would think this to be usable, but if you do think so, Luz would massively outclass Anne in variety and abilities even more so than she already would beforehand.

As for the revives both Luz and Anne have available, Luz can be brought back by King’s father should she perish (which grants her the Titan form). She also has a hypothetical second method from Stringbean. It has been shown Palisman can revive their user (as shown with Hunter) by sacrificing themselves and becoming one with them. While this would render Luz without her greatest weapon, though it has been shown Palisman merging still gives the user their magic (Hunter gained Flapjack’s magic).

As for Anne, the Guardian has the ability to make backups of Anne, and effectively revive her from death. It is quite likely the Guardian would revive Anne once in a fight without issue, given it wants her to replace it in 70+ years. However the issue lies in assuming the Guardian would repeatedly revive Anne in mid combat without limit. Not only has the Guardian not intervened in fights Anne has fought before (Despite its ability to see events throughout Anne’s life), this particular method is something Anne has never attempted before. It's also implied that the Guardian was enjoying watching Anne throughout her journey and was communicating with her in her dreams, yet it never intervenes in combat or when her life is in peril.

The Guardian’s goal is to ensure Anne’s survival in correlation to replacing it years later. This does not translate to sending Anne back repeatedly to a fight where she already lost. The Guardian might not send her back because of the moral defeat. A single revival might be fair game, but any repeated deaths and immediate revival + send back to said fight is far too assumptious to argue as an objective win con.

Tertiary Factors

Amphibia and The Owl House take place over roughly similar timeframes, around 6 months each, giving Anne and Luz generally comparable experience at first glance. While Luz did spend three of those months powerless in the human realm, it’s compensated for by the fact that Luz has fought a much wider variety of foes than Anne has. Anne has faced plenty of monsters and robots, but magical abilities like those present in The Owl House are far less explored in Amphibia, with the creatures Anne fights being a lot more homogenous overall. In comparison, Luz has fought people with extremely large arsenals of magic such as Emperor Belos, and has seen a much wider overall expanse of abilities in her time on the Boiling Isles, both in fights and just as a student of Hexside. Even if she doesn’t always win, it speaks to her intelligence and ingenuity that she’s able to hold her own against so many different powers with just her glyphs. Luz is going to be well-acquainted with a lot of the stuff Anne dishes out, while Anne has little experience against most of Luz’s arsenal even on a basic level.

Speaking of intelligence, Luz should be smarter overall too. Both have fought beings with centuries of experience in the form of the Core and Belos, but Luz shows a lot more creative thinking and study throughout the series compared to Anne. She was able to enroll in and get through Hexside with just the use of her glyphs, and is frequently shown studying and reading up on magic and glyphs. She was even able to expand on the margin notes Belos left in his diary and derive new glyph combinations from them, and has come up with new glyph combinations on her own, alongside teaching Eda and Lilith how to use glyphs in a short time. Anne is highly skilled in her own right, capable of defeating an entire hall of trained FBI agents in melee combat, and has undergone formal swordsmanship training, but she’s never shown to be as booksmart and studious as Luz is, and is generally less creative in combat. While Anne would obviously hold a vast edge in skill in close-quarters, Luz’s magical abilities excel at playing keep-away and allowing Luz to escape sticky situations, whether it be propelling herself with an ice glyph or swinging from a plant glyph, which helps ensure the fight is unlikely to get to close quarters in the first place.

All that is just for their normal abilities though. When it comes to their super forms, both characters gain massive energy attacks that span large distances. Comparing them, Anne’s explosions do have a larger demonstrated range, at 1500 km in diameter compared to Luz’s light glyphs spanning something closer to 30 km. However, Luz’s light glyphs are just that, light, and so should move at lightspeed, with it being shown that the actual light-waves are what Luz uses to attack in her Titan form. This means Luz can essentially attack with 30 km wide lightspeed blasts just by drawing a spell-circle. Even if one were to grant Anne faster travel speed, ignoring the possibility of Luz scaling to the Collector’s FTL flight speed, she’d struggle to dodge such massive attacks moving faster than she can fly on a consistent basis. Especially when, as shown above, Luz only needs a single hit to kill Anne.

There’s also the matter of their time limits, where Luz has a clear edge. Luz’s Titan form lasts roughly 10 minutes, compared to Anne’s full power blue form only being shown to last for 5. While we don’t know the full-extent of full power blue Anne’s time’s limit due to the circumstances of the finale, it can’t just be assumed to be comparable to Luz’s demonstrated time limit without evidence, and it’s impossible to try and gauge it from Sasha and Marcy’s performance due to the lack of specification on how the strain the gems place on the body works. Series creator Matt Braly also corroborates this in a tweet, suggesting Anne would need to practice and get used to her full-power blue form to push its time limit past 5 minutes. This means even setting aside their stats, Luz has much more leeway to use her abilities, and has the option to just outlast Anne’s form until she’s left exhausted. White Anne is essentially a non-factor, given she dies after a single attack which also shatters the Calamity Gems, and said attack isn’t strong enough to kill Titan Luz, ignoring how she could possibly just dodge it as well.

An argument could be made about how the official subtitles on the YouTube release of Watching and Dreaming suggest Luz depowers over time in her Titan form before it leaves her body, with the first indication of this occurring 4 minutes and 32 seconds after she first gets the form, while the second happens only a minute after that. One could argue then that Anne would simply need to outlast Titan Luz for 4 minutes and 32 seconds until Luz depowers, after which Luz couldn’t be proven to be stronger than Anne and so allowing for Anne to simply kill her through raw strength.

However, this is all assuming Luz’s depowering isn’t linear and instead occurs in massive individual moments of power decrease, which is an unsupported and frankly weird assumption given how power consumption actually works. It would make a lot more sense if Luz’s depowering happened linearly and constantly over the entire 10 minute time limit, with the glyph flashing just indicating to her that her time is running out. In this case, the power decrease wouldn’t significantly affect Luz’s power. Even just using the 8000 yottaton number for her strength, she would lose roughly 13 yottatons worth of power per second, meaning she would only become comparable to Anne’s moon-bust in strength in the last 30 seconds of the Titan form’s time limit. A moon-bust which, need we remind you, kills Anne upon use. All that is ignoring the Collector’s potentially much higher feats and scaling such as the galaxy-sized bedroom, which would make the gap even more massive.

It’s also worth noting that Anne has no real way of knowing about Luz’s power decreasing or time limit. While the glyph on her chest does flash to indicate her power is running out, Anne wouldn’t know what this actually means herself (and might not even pay attention to it given how much else would be going on in the fight), and wouldn’t really have any reason to think she can just stall against Luz until she can be defeated. It’s much likelier that, with Luz’s strength, abilities, and intelligence, she’d be able to take out Anne first.

Conclusion

"I think I just… realized something. I don’t know why it took me so long to figure out. The only thing I’ve ever really wanted… was to be understood!"

Advantages:

  • Far stronger with Titan form

  • Would blitz with higher speed arguments

  • Much more creative with her arsenal and abilities

  • Larger and more diverse arsenal and abilities at her disposal

  • Would have a easier time adapting to Anne’s fighting style than vice versa given her experience with a larger variety of foes

  • Has some potential one shotting options if given the chance

  • Titan form would last longer than Anne’s individual forms

  • Actually gets to visit her found family

  • Has an awesome girlfriend

Disadvantages:

  • Base Luz should be substantially outclassed by Anne’s forms in power

  • Outclassed in AOE compared to Super and Full Power Anne

  • Inferior combat training

  • Titan form is more difficult to access than Anne’s super forms and has a worse time limit

    • She also needs to die to access it, using up her revive early in the fight

  • "Season" 3 reduced to atoms (Damn you, Disney)

  • iTunes

To keep things simple, Luz is possibly stronger than base Anne, though the reverse is more concretely provable. Both have MHS/Relativistic speed scaling, with Luz being about twice as fast as Anne with the former ends. Super Anne is strong enough to force Luz into Titan form, which itself far exceeds any level of power Anne can scale to. Even Anne’s last resort (Anne Blanco) is at bare minimum hundreds of times weaker than the Collector’s feat of moving the Moon, which Luz scales to. Anne’s White Form gets scaling to the Core Helmet, which is 18.3-21.5 percent the speed of light. Titan Luz’s dispersal feat isn't far off from this, sitting at 11.9-19.58 percent the speed of light. Titan Luz is comparable in speed and is simply too strong for Anne to survive any of her attacks.

In terms of abilities, Luz has far too many spells for Anne to deal with. Luz has methods to catch Anne off guard, hold her down, and remove herself from Anne’s sight. She can freeze Anne or petrify her (which Anne’s sword cannot counter). Luz’s relics are also a great threat to Anne, considering one item can even shrink her. In their super forms, Luz’s variety of glyphs and barriers can assist her against Anne’s superior AOE. Luz also has a teleportation move in this form, which can be used to get in closer on Anne. As for revival options, Anne leads the initial advantage here as she can access all her forms without having to bank on a revival (Luz needs her one to happen for the Titan form, which will more than likely occur). However, it is not possible to prove Anne would have access to more than 1 revive/back up from the Guardian.

Given the types of opponents Luz has fought, she is going to be well-acquainted with Anne’s manner of combat and equipment. Luz has shown herself to be more intelligent and her magical abilities excel at playing keep away, which counters Anne's own close quarters style quite well. In regards to the AOE mentioned, Luz’s spells are fast enough to tag Anne despite her range advantage. Luz’s timeframe for her Titan Form (even with the lower end argument) would be sufficient to tag Anne enough times to permanently defeat her (even considering the revival). Anne’s own form also has evidence for a time frame that is likely lower than Luz’s.

In the end Luz’s superior arsenal, application of abilities, and Titan Form are far too much for Anne to compete with. Even considering all arguments for the time frame for both girls’ super forms, the Titan form is more reliable, both in power and ability usage. In the end it was lights out for Anne as Luz made her croak. The winner is Luz Noceda.

Team Anne

Stats

Base to base, AP is a pretty straightforward comparison. Both Luz and Anne have a good amount of feats breaking into various tons of TNT ranges, ranging from golem cutting to various explosions. Luz does have some higher end feats however. She has various kiloton level feats involving large explosions and ice walls, even some city level feats depending on what you want to accept or not. There is even a feat you can argue for Luz and Amity screaming and shaking a large area that gets into the gigatons, though the more comedic nature of the feat suggests it is more likely a simple gag and nothing to actually be taken seriously.

Accepting it or not is not really important though, for Anne can cut up frobots. This is important as a large group of frobots working together could make a ginormous engine fire while helping Anne and friends push the moon. Now, the moon push itself is definitely an outlier. It is clear the frobots are vastly inferior to the girls’ higher super forms. With said super forms struggling to push the moon beforehand. But considering the engine fire is the frobot’s own feat, it is more than fine to use. The result? Considering the energy needed to produce that flame, how many frobots were involved in the feat, and assuming Anne, Sasha, and Marcy’s super forms were also adding to the big flame, the energy each individual Frobot had to have been outputting is equal to 112.8 gigatons of TNT. Over twenty times greater than the gigaton reaching Lumity scream. Far higher than the other feats Luz can scale to in base as well.

It is possible to argue Luz getting even higher in stats however. She was able to stop a blast from the Belos infested Titan, the same Belos infested Titan that could create enormous amounts of kinetic energy with its simple movements. This could get Luz into the teraton ranges for power, letting her flip the script and AP stomp base Anne. However, it is more likely Belos’ big blue blast is not AP based. The other times Belos uses this blast attack, it does not actually seem to damage anything. As when he hits the landscape, it just covers it in his moss, flesh… stuff. Additionally, later on Stringbean in its staff form is hit directly by a blast, but just seems to be knocked away. It not taking any sign of damage is contradictory with what else we see of Belos’ blast, so this moment likely is not that important. With all that out of the way, it is clear that base to base, Anne is solidly far stronger than Luz, to the point where one good hit would more than likely put the good witch down.

But their base forms are only half the story. Their transformations is where their power really shines, and this is where, admittedly, things completely shift in Luz’s favor. Collector scaling for Luz’s Titan form (already elaborated on in the Q&A) would let her transformation scale to the Collector’s feat of casually moving the moon. A feat worth 8 ronnatons of TNT. To put the power gap into perspective, Anne’s white colored Super form she gets from using all three Gems’ gets about 38 yottatons of TNT from an all out blast. Whereas the Collector’s casual moon movement gets over 8000 yottatons of TNT. Anne’s various transformations have various good feats, with massive upscaling from the Frobot moon fire, city covering shockwaves, and country sized explosions coming to mind, but no feat in Amphibia is coming close to the level of Collector’s “time /day” feat. It was performed casually as well, so he (and thus Titan Luz) is likely far stronger. You can possibly go even further with Titan Luz’s strength depending on interpretations of things like the Collector’s bedroom, but considering she has a big AP advantage regardless, it is not really worth getting into.

Raw power is only one side of the coin however, so let us talk about speed. As previously explained in the Q&A, light glyphs and Frobot lasers have a variety of issues when it comes to being applied to speed stats. Contradictions involving force, lack of statements regarding speed, etc. This solidly lands both Luz and Anne both in high MHS ranges, meaning there is not really too much of a gap. Things change again however when their transformations are factored in, but the end result of doing that is a bit different this time.

Titan Luz gets consistent low relativistic scaling, scaling to the Collector’s 10% c moon movement and being able to disperse Belos’ moss-flesh-stuff in tandem with light, a feat ranging from roughly 11 to 19% the speed of light. You probably noticed however, when looking through Luz’s stat section, that there were some higher feats brought up for her speed. Being extremely fast plant growth that occurred in the same scene as that mentioned moss dispersion (over 80% c), and the Collector’s statement of “returning to the stars” (over 2c at minimum). So, what gives? What is the issue with these two feats?

Starting with the plant growth, it is not really something Luz can scale to. As the growth itself is not traveling forward itself, as it is not its own spell. We see earlier in the fight with Titan Belos that Luz’s magic being released across the area not only disperses Belos’ moss-flesh-stuff, but also accelerates the growth of the nature around her. Causing grass to appear where moss once was present. Considering that just before the grass appeared, Luz’s moss dispersing attack had spread around the area, along with the fact the energy that dispersed said moss looks identical to the energy that originally grew the grass in the prior scene (you can tell by the purple outline), we can reach a simple conclusion. The energy that has already moved in tandem with the light is simply causing the grass to grow as a bonus to destroying the moss, with the grass only appearing after the energy has already passed by. Thus its growth along the area cannot be used as a speed feat.

As for the Collector’s space travel, the issue presents itself in the vagueness of the situation. It has no visual representation, and we are given no context to how the Collector traveled “to the stars”. From what we actually see throughout the show, his methods of travel involve normal flight, and for longer distances across the isles, his special blue stars. But in no scene do they ever reach the faster than light speeds Collector’s statement implies. Due to such little context given about the statement in the first place though, it is awkward to justify using the feat anyways, regardless of lacking supporting evidence within the show itself for faster than light travel. Even if the Collector did have some special unseen method of high speed space travel, there is no proof his reactions and normal flight speed or blue star speed would scale anyways, as you cannot prove he reacted to anything while moving at faster than light speeds as there is no feat to analyze in the first place.

With those explanations out of the way, we can move onto Anne’s transformed speed arguments. She is consistently shown to be several times faster than all the base form tier characters in the series as Super Anne, so that is a good starting point. This would put her above damaged Frobots flying to space for her travel speed, Mach 193.6 to be precise. In comparison, Luz’s best travel speed feat would be her going from orbit to Belos’ castle in a short time frame, getting Mach 92.33. This paints a clear picture for travel speed being in Anne’s favor, but things can shift in her favor even further. Considering Super Anne was able to battle and nearly defeat Andrias’ hyper advanced Dyoplosaurus mech, a behemoth of a fighting suit meant for the most hard hitting fast flying battles, she should be able to compare to the travel speed of the Core’s helmet, which flew to the moon in roughly seven to five seconds depending on what logic you want to use based on what we see in the show. This would put Anne’s travel speed (would also scale to reactions mind you) at 18.3% to 21.5% the speed of light. Keeping up with Luz’s own attack and reaction speed, and being roughly two-thousand times faster than her peak travel speed.

To summarize, base to base, both have relative enough speed with Anne having a major power advantage. Reaction speed stays mostly relative with Luz reversing the power edge when the two utilize their stronger transformations, but Anne does get a notable travel speed advantage. One which will be very important going forward.

Arsenal & Abilities

In terms of versatility, it is clear that Luz is the one with the advantage here. It should not come as that much of a surprise that some swords paired with everyday objects and a few explosives do not quite exactly stack up to a laundry list of glyphs. Fire balls for projectiles, vines for grappling, invisibility and mist for hiding around the battlefield, and so on. Luz’s Titan form also helps out here, as it gets rid of the need for paper or drawing for glyphs. Meaning Anne cannot just disarm Luz to get rid of her magic. It is shown in the series that Palisman can be used to perform magic, even by people lacking magic. As Luz was able to use Eda’s Palisman Owlbert to perform an ice spell against Belos back in Season 1. Stringbean is also shown being able to fire purple energy projectiles. Though considering Luz has not really had time to practice all of the magic available to her (at least not in combat), she should not be able to do all of the stuff that is taught within each of the Hexside tracks she took. Additionally, it is clear some glyphs such as Monster Arms and Petrification are not really her go to options for a fight, nor are they glyphs she has ever actually used in a fight. So it is unlikely she would use spells such as those for combat. It should not matter much anyways with something like Petrification though, considering her Titan form already has an established massive AP advantage, and as such would likely not think of using it.

It is not like Anne is completely outmatched ability wise though. Once she transforms, she gets access to really good ranged options, would it be with her shockwaves or constructs. Said constructs have a lot of potential as well, as Anne should logically be capable of doing more than just giant tennis rackets and exploding cats, based on what we saw of Sasha and Marcy’s constructs. Punching gloves, timed explosive die, she has a lot of options to surprise Luz with. Of course it is not quite matching Luz’s plethora of magic, but it is still useful regardless. Her telekinesis could also be useful for flinging Luz away whenever she does not have her spherical barrier up, so that is also a plus.

But by far the biggest asset both Luz and Anne have is the ability to quite literally cheat death, thanks to a little favor from their world’s respective godly beings. Let’s explain Luz’s first, since it is a lot simpler. Basically, upon dying in base form, she goes to the Space in Between where she can meet the original Titan. There, he can lend her his power, and thus send her back to the living world in her new fancy Titan form. As said before, pretty simple. Though it does come with the issue that Luz can only get it in her base form, and not after her Titan form is activated. Since it uses up all of the Titan’s life force, it is also a one time use only. Given the stats presented beforehand, what is most likely going to happen is that base or Super Anne will tap Luz too hard and she goes Titan mode as a result. It is not actually useful for outlasting Anne or anything, so it likely will not actually contribute that much to Luz’s chances.

Now let’s move on to the complicated one. When Anne died upon using up all the gems at once, she found herself in a strange location with the Guardian of the three gems. Originally, the Guardian wanted Anne to take over their role as Guardian over the multiverse, thinking she was perfect for the job, so they created a clone of Anne to do so - but she declined, as she didn't believe she was ready for that kind of responsibility. Ultimately seeing her point, the Guardian sent her back to live her full life first. Why is this important to the fight? Well, if we are to give the Guardian to Anne as a support God, then that comes with some very big implications.

With seemingly no caveat or stated limitation, the Guardian would be able to continue to revive Anne if she were to die in her battle against Luz. There are a few key details regarding how this works that support the notion that the Guardian would in fact do this, namely that the Guardian is acting out of their own incentive to revive Anne, not from Anne asking herself. Anne never actually asked the Guardian to revive her, the Guardian decided to do so themself because they wanted Anne to take over their position when she is fully grown and lived her full life. In addition to this, the Guardian can see the future, as it knew exactly when Anne would die after living a proper life, so it would be able to determine that Anne would not continue to die forever if she were to be revived. With this, it can only be consistent within the Guardian's character motivations to revive her continuously, as not doing so would imply an out-of-character action.

In order for the Guardian to not decide to revive Anne, it would either have to decide to not copy her (inconsistent with their intent to have her replace them as the Guardian), or simply make her Guardian against her will while she is still young (inconsistent with how the Guardian was willing to give Anne the choice to not become Guardian, and how they agreed with her conclusion that she wasn't ready.) Simply put, you cannot place an arbitrary limitation on the amount of times the Guardian would revive her without breaking the rules and canonical motivations of the character. It ultimately is not about Anne getting second chances, or the Guardian wanting to help her in a fight - it is about the established narrative that the final episode of Amphibia operates by. Most interpretations counter to this rely on bizarre circumstances that do not make any sense. No, the Guardian would not decide to let her die because they got bored, and no, the Guardian reviving Anne would not somehow be selfish on Anne's part when reviving her is the Guardian's own initiative.

To summarize, Anne is a bit behind ability wise, but her revival is significantly more beneficial for her than Luz’s.

Tertiary Factors

Surprisingly, both of these characters have quite a variety of different skills and abilities that can consistently one-up each other. In terms of range, Luz has shown more experience and skill in actually fighting with ranged attacks, her spells being able to be activated from a distance and keep base Anne from getting in close. However, once Anne goes blue, a lot changes. Anne has an attack size of 779.216-1500 km in her 100% Calamity Form, which in combination with Titan Luz's relatively slower movement speed of just over Mach 92, would take up to 24 to nearly 48 seconds to fully travel through. Should Anne realize that her attacks do not phase Luz in her Titan Form, she can efficiently play keepaway thanks to her far superior travel speed, and avoid a lot of Luz’s attacks that would have trouble in space to begin with such as plants and fire.

In regards to combat skill, Anne has a fairly clear edge. While Luz did take every class at Hexside, and her creativity shows she is probably generally smarter than Anne, she has not had much experience utilizing many types of magic with a Palisman, as well as her actual proficiency in casting different magics themselves being relatively unknown besides mastery in glyphs. To add on, she also lacks experience and skill in her Titan Form, being outright unable to cast spells until given guidance by Eda. Not to say she is not very dangerous in her own right, she is at least very competent in plants, ice, beam-casting, etc, being able to maintain control and utilize her surroundings and new powers well. However, in terms of hand to hand and close-range combat skill, Anne both knows Muay Thai in at least some manner, and had gained legitimate swordsman training from Trintonio, also learning various combat and other skills with the Plantars such as the Plantar Family Hunting Dance. So while Luz is smarter, Anne is definitely the better fighter.

While The Boiling Isles is a harsh and rough environment, there’s at least some protection from other witches and shelter from almost any form of beast that comes their way. Thanks to the various magical options presented to its inhabitants so they can protect themselves. This is compared to Amphibia, a Medieval-esque mountainous land with dozens of different monsters and almost no safety from either the elements or creatures that lurk, the fact that most pieces of civilization are located in the middle of nowhere is not exactly helping. Even if they were equally dangerous, Luz spent a relatively large portion of her time simply living a semi-average witch life free of great conflict, with most of her shenanigans being with other people, while Anne had to spend an arguably longer time in Amphibia fighting off both monsters and an actual, organized army. Needless to say, if this match ended in base-to-base fisticuffs, it would not end well for Luz. With what has been previously stated in mind, the gap in both skill, experience, and range should be fairly apparent.

In terms of stamina, both their base forms are fairly comparable. With Luz being able to walk for miles straight and Anne staying awake for multiple days. It is unlikely that a base to base fight would take that long anyways though, so stamina is not too much of a factor. That is, at least, before the two bust out their transformations. At first glance, it would seem Luz is in a much better position when it comes to transformation duration. With Anne only being able to maintain her normal blue Super form for roughly a bit more than five minutes against Andrias during their fight in Los Angeles. In comparison, Luz’s Titan form first showed up in Watching and Dreaming at about 32:08, and started going away at 41:55. So it should be able to last for roughly ten minutes. So at first glance, it would seem that Luz would be able to maintain her Titan form for a longer period of time. This is not actually the case though.

When it comes to the armored Super form, Sasha and Marcy got the form at 4:30. With no sign of exhaustion until 8:14. But Anne on the other hand, thanks to her prior experience with the powers, did not feel any strain yet whatsoever. With them only fully losing the forms at 8:59 due to them giving Anne the gems. Meaning the armored Super form should last at minimum about four and a half minutes… on first use.

Remember, in comparison to the other two girls, Anne was showing no signs of strain up to this point, due to her prior experience with the Gem’s power. And she showed no sign of strain up until she switched to the white form, keeping the blue Super form until 10:12 (meaning over six minutes at minimum), and definitely being able to keep it for longer. Sasha and Marcy holding the armored forms for over four minutes on first usage is also important considering Anne’s experience with the normal Super form the first time she used it in True Colors. In which we saw Anne first use the normal Super form, with it lasting from 2:39 to 3:35 before Anne lost the form due to strain. Considering the armored forms lasted longer for Sasha and Marcy upon first usage than this, this all means the armored form ironically should consume stamina slower than the normal Super form. With all these factors in mind, we can make an estimate of how long Anne should be able to hold the armored form.

During the final battle with Andrias in Los Angeles, Anne was able to hold her blue form through constant fighting from 4:48 to 9:46 before losing her Super form. We also know the cuts to Sasha’s fight should not subtract from this as it was shown both fights were happening simultaneously. Subtracting for the few seconds she lost the form (roughly about forty) due to heavy attacks from Andrias, Anne by end of series should be capable of holding the normal Super form for a bit less than four and a half minutes. Essentially, the final duration of Anne’s normal Super form is about four and a half times longer than her initial duration back during True Colors. Applying this logic to her armored form, she could potentially last over twenty minutes. Roughly double Titan Luz’s timer, meaning Anne’s armored blue form should be able to outlast Titan Luz.

On the topic of form duration, it is worth addressing the argument that Titan Luz loses power overtime. At 36:41 (about halfway through Titan Luz’s duration) and a bit later at 37:48, we see Luz’s glyph start to fade a little, with the subtitles for the episode saying the form is “powering down”. This leads to the argument that the Titan form gets weaker overtime, though by what metric we do not know. If the decrease is linear, then through the ten minutes, Titan Luz will at worst be relative to Anne’s white form in power in her last minute or so. If the decrease is exponentially decaying, then Luz will eventually become far weaker to the point where Anne could deal a finishing blow without the form even needing to go away. Depending on which interpretation you choose to believe, the debate can shift in very different ways, but Anne would likely still take the win regardless of which one you go with. We will elaborate more on this topic in the conclusion.

To summarize, while Luz is certainly smarter than Anne and has more to strategize with, Anne’s better range, combat skill, combat experience, and form duration let her take the edge in terms of tertiary factors.

Conclusion

“You know, before I ended up in Amphibia, I didn’t care about right or wrong. I just did what was easy. I let people walk all over me. And I think that’s because I didn’t love myself. Not really. But meeting you three has changed all of that. And these months we spent together, have shown me the person I really wanna be. Trap or not, I have to do this.”

Advantages:

  • Significantly stronger than Luz in their base forms

  • Far greater travel and attack speed

  • Superior combat training and experience

  • Transformations are easier to access and should be able to last longer apart from the white 3-Gem state

  • AoE that neither of Luz’s forms can match

  • Has no stipulations around her revive, and can use it at max power

  • Context around her revive arguably makes her nearly impossible for Luz to kill for good

  • Mr. Boonchuy's mere existence (One of the most based dads in animated media)

  • Has the power of sweet life giving K-Pop

Disadvantages:

  • Significantly weaker than Luz's Titan Form regardless of Anne's own forms

  • Generally much less versatile arsenal and abilities

  • Less intelligent generally

  • Shipping fandom

  • iTunes

If you could not already tell, this fight is, as Wiz Death Battle would put it, “an extremely close match”. Anne may be able to get past base Luz without too much trouble, especially if she were to bust out a transformation or two early, but Titan Luz makes the debate go from straightforward to quite the mess. So, let's break things down and explain why the advantages mentioned for Anne in the last three sections lead to her win.

For starters, with stats, obviously Luz has a major power advantage here, as well as relative reaction speed. However, Anne is notably way faster when it comes to getting around thanks to scaling to the Core’s helmet. This goes in tandem with what was mentioned in tertiary factors, being her incredible range advantage. Anne has all the tools needed to play the ranged-game and attack Luz from a safe distance. While some may argue that she would likely get in close and in-danger herself, it is worth noting that she is significantly better than Luz at hand to hand combat. She can likely get away with having a close quarters interaction or two, and with her battle experience in mind, it likely would not take long for Anne to realize the power gap as she cannot hurt Titan Luz. Thus, she would probably think to fight at a distance.

This is very problematic for Luz, again considering her vastly inferior travel speed and range, and the fact she has a worse time limit than Anne’s armored form. Were one to argue her power decreasing linearly as she goes through her time limit, she is already in a problematic scenario as she still needs to hit Anne. If it were argued that her power experiences exponential decay, then she would eventually lack the strength to even pose a threat to Anne, at least in her higher transformations, and thus end up being taken down with outlasting her not even being a necessity for Anne’s victory.

While Luz does have some form of teleportation, it seems similar to Hunter’s in that you can tell what direction she is moving towards based on the energy around her. Even without considering that, it does not seem to be able to travel very long distances, so it still would not close the distance gap Anne can create. It is also possible to argue Luz could use a light speed glyph attack, like the one she used in Watching and Dreaming, to catch Anne off guard with an attack too fast for her to fly away from. However, when considering the speed of light compared to Anne’s movement speed, Anne would basically only have to be a car’s distance away from Luz in order to avoid a light speed attack. You could also say an invisibility glyph could be used to catch Anne off guard, but one, if she sees her opponent suddenly disappear she is absolutely going to play defensively and make distance upon hearing a single sound, and two, Luz would still need to cover some distance while invisible to catch Anne off guard, while also holding her breath to keep the spell active. Making it an unreliable approach option in actuality.

Of course it is easy to understand the thought that Anne being able to play this game of keepaway for nearly ten minutes would seem unreasonable considering Luz’s comparable reaction speed. However, were Anne to get tagged, she has the 3 Gem Guardian helping her out with a free revival. Just one would let Anne get past a good bit of Luz’s timer, with multiple being something Luz has no true answer for. With her revival argument helping her out, Anne basically has a get out of jail free card were she actually to be tagged by Titan Luz, meaning that if Luz were to knock Anne out of the fight, she still would not be able to fully finish her off. Resulting in her eventually running out of power, and the fight going base to base. A base to base fight where Luz cannot use glyphs, only Stringbean’s magic. Considering how the power difference between their base forms was lined out earlier, it is pretty easy to understand that Luz would inevitably fall to Anne if neither had access to transformations.

This will by no means be an easy fight for Anne, as she has a lot of obstacles she needs to get through. However, considering her superior travel speed, skill, range, form duration, and vastly superior revival option, she would likely win this bout more times than not. It seems Anne hopped to it, as Luz was simply destined to, well, you know, lose. The winner is Anne Boonchuy.
